That glove never worked
sed2017@reddit
The movie will always make me think of DARE because when I went to go see it I got some Lemonheads and on the inside of the box it said “Say nope to dope.” And I kept thinking what the heck is “dope”?
Spaceboy779@reddit
Had a massive crush on Jenny Lewis. Still do!
YourGuyK@reddit
I always loved that he somehow knew what a warp whistle was in a game that no one had ever played before
Also, the idea of travelling with an NES blew my mind. Like, you can unplug it and bring it with you to other places?
hamburgler26@reddit
It had been released in Japan for I think over a year when the movie came out and she did spend a lot of cash talking to the Nintendo hotline and researching games. But no this movie is silly and makes no sense.
bascule@reddit
That movie taught people where all the warp whistles were before anyone played SMB3 (and I believe also the trick where if you use a warp whistle from the Warp Zone, you warp straight to World 8)
ScreenTricky4257@reddit
Only the one in the castle. They didn't show the one in 1-3 or in the mushroom house in world 2.
protossaccount@reddit
That’s a trick in Mario 3 but that’s in this movie?
bascule@reddit
I was trying to remember, I think he warps to World 8 right before he runs out if time, right?
midnight-dour@reddit
He warps to World 4.
bascule@reddit
My bad then
no1kn0wsm3@reddit
I remember watching that movie on Betamax in my mom's grandma's place in 1990.
xpacean@reddit
I mean, it looked exactly like the whistle in Zelda, which everyone seeing the movie had played, and did something similar.
JWWBurger@reddit
I remember bringing my NES over to a friends for a sleepover. I felt like fucking MacGyver setting it up.
mutantbabysnort@reddit
Or MacGruber
AlchemistMustang@reddit
It's an amazing movie that tackles some real issues including divorce, custody, raising an autistic child, childhood trauma, death of a sibling. The entire movie is about Jimmy and his pain.
Britown@reddit
It’s literally Rain Man but also an advertisement. What a wild marketing move.
Bebopdavidson@reddit
New game!!?? No said anything about a new game!!!!
Overall-Rush-8853@reddit
Sponsored by Nintendo of America
UCPonch@reddit
Was he supposed to be autistic? I always assumed he had PTSD from watching his sister drown.
ryguymcsly@reddit
The OG lineup of Rilo Kiley sure looks different.
GarminTamzarian@reddit
It's so bad.
MartialBob@reddit
The most obvious 100-minute commercial I've ever seen.
burnumd@reddit
Lifelong crush on Jenny Lewis, here
KudosOfTheFroond@reddit
Came here to say this. Have you ever listened to her band, Rilo Kiley? I love their song “A Better/Son Daughter”. Actually I love pretty much everything they made.
garden__gate@reddit
She’s also been touring with The Postal Service! Love her.
KudosOfTheFroond@reddit
Seriously???. I had no idea the Postal Service was still playing music!
garden__gate@reddit
They did an anniversary tour last year! The first set was Transatlanticism by Death Cab and the second set was Give Up. The tour is over but I bet they’ll do it again. Ben Gibbard is in incredible shape.
altiuscitiusfortius@reddit
Tour adds new dates all the time, I follow them on social media
garden__gate@reddit
Oh cool, that’s great. Ben really seems to love it.
altiuscitiusfortius@reddit
They're in the middle of a reunion tour. I saw them this summer. Still amazing. They played that song too
wisemeat@reddit
I can't listen to that song without crying. It helped me through some really difficult times and I still hold it dear to my heart.
burnumd@reddit
Yeah, I saw them at Just Like Heaven this summer and in Boston this fall on the reunion tour (we've also seen Jenny solo a bunch, too)!
bascule@reddit
It was hilarious how she was a craps expert. I rewatched the Wizard after growing up and playing some craps in Vegas, and uhh yeah her betting strategy was total nonsense
Kade7596@reddit
none of the video game stuff mattered, or matters, to me in that movie
was all about the kid and why he really wanted to go to california 🥲
joey_oaks@reddit
THE POWER GLOVE!
pramarama@reddit
Worked great on exactly one game: Rad Racer.
wisemeat@reddit
It's so bad!
big_ringer@reddit
It sure was.
Hades_Mercedes@reddit
Somehow, less disappointing than the Virtual Boy.
literanch@reddit
The absolute worst
wazacraft@reddit
"I love the glove" was also great advice as I aged...
-PlayWithUsDanny-@reddit
My brother and I saved up one summer by mowing lawns and bought one. Such a massive fucking disappointment. It quickly became more useful for dressing up as a robot than as a nes controller
ThePerfectSnare@reddit
I remember saving up for one, and when we got to the video game store, the woman at the counter told me that pretty much everyone who bought it ended up wanting to return it.
She convinced me to buy a U-Force instead. I appreciate how she was trying to save me from disappointment, but the U-Force also turned out to be garbage.
Gaming Historian did an episode on the U-Force.
bascule@reddit
You forgot the “I love…”
TradeMark310@reddit
Yeah, well, uh...just keep your Power Gloves off her, pal!
themole316@reddit
I was super excited for this and saw it in the theater, but then never felt the urge again. Whereas I watched Ski Patrol like 40 times, and that movie is god awful.
mesosuchus@reddit
Howard the Duck exists
PoopyMcpants@reddit
The movie that sold me mario 3.
DonShulaDoingTheHula@reddit
I remember getting a pamphlet on Mario 3 in the theater before going into the movie.
JortsForSale@reddit
Which was always the entire point.
PoopyMcpants@reddit
Agreed.
Im all about it.
Amnion_@reddit
You know, I don't think I've ever seen it. Although I remember being vaguely amazed by the warp whistle stuff. I think I'll give it a watch... I'd better damn well not be disappointed.
Luann_Bakersfield@reddit
My brother was an extra in this movie so we watched it…a lot
callingtyroneagain@reddit
Literally ONLY significant for that 1st Magic Flute!(Epic for kids at that time) 🤯🤯🤯
billardbuster888@reddit
Don’t forget about the Tobey McGuire appearance.
elkniodaphs@reddit
In case you wanted to know how Jimmy could have known about the Warp Whistle...
He was an enthusiast, and gaming magazines existed, several of which covered Japanese releases as they were anticipating localization. Also, SMB3 was in arcades for six months before the game released on the NES, he could certainly have played it before the tournament. In fact, the very machine he played Double Dragon on was a PlayChoice-10, the same machine that would have given him access to SMB3.
u/SanPadrigo u/YourGuyK u/Forward-Bank8412
three-sense@reddit
Yeah I was gonna say it's unlikely but not impossible for him to know the secrets. The game was already out in Japan.
ketamineburner@reddit
I love this movie. Watched it with my own kids, it holds up.
_its_a_SWEATER_@reddit
Ya well, you can keep your Power Glove off her, pal.
big_ringer@reddit
Rain Man for kids, basically.
Also, the girl from that movie is an indie musician now.
elegantlywasted1983@reddit
My nonna taped this off the TV for us but forgot she was taping it at one point so this movie will forever have three minutes of Oprah as a part of the plot line burned into my memory forever 🫶
mutantbabysnort@reddit
What happened in the Oprah episode?
elegantlywasted1983@reddit
It was when Oprah was more like Maury and Ricki Lake so it was a paternity test one.
Then all of a sudden - the rooftop kissing scene ☠️
mutantbabysnort@reddit
lol
Crans10@reddit
I still have my little mini Nintendo Power they gave me at the Theater to go see this. I recently rewatched this movie earlier this year. Defiantly a guilty pleasure.
jessek@reddit
I remember going to the theatre for this as a kid and slowly realizing it was just a commercial for Nintendo.
StevieV61080@reddit
I loved this movie and also made it somewhat far in the Nintendo World Championships, myself!
beardedjack@reddit
California!
garygnu@reddit
Also at the end of the other Fred Savage movie.
Eledridan@reddit
🦕 🦖
Warrior-Cook@reddit
I'm not one to get tattoos, but that shot would be considerable.
uns0licited_advice@reddit
I had my 9 year old watch this with me and she actually enjoyed it.
KevDub81@reddit
icenine09@reddit
If you think The Wizard is a terrible movie, then you haven't seen any truly terrible movies.
Warrior-Cook@reddit
Probably the first time I heard Send Me An Angel, unlocking an unknown love for goth power ballads.
8-Bit-Memories@reddit
That movie was a 1.5 hour long advertisement for Super Mario 3. And I loved every second of it
Either-Sentence3652@reddit
Best commercial ever made
bascule@reddit
As someone who grew up in Western Colorado it was kind of surreal it started out in Green River, Utah, and one of their first stops was the very real Goblin Valley.
If I grew up in Utah, I’d want to visit California too
Eastern_Resource_488@reddit
California
Potential-Celery-999@reddit
This is a close second but mine is Flight of the Navigator. A better movie than The Wizard but I wouldn't consider it a good movie.
Jefflehem@reddit
Thus began my love affair with Jenny Lewis.
Competitive-Phase-75@reddit
"He touched my breast!"
sofakingclassic@reddit
This movie is genuinely good. It's the same exact plot as Rain Man.
Also director Todd Holland's next project after this was an episode of Twin Peaks and then 60+ episodes of the Larry Sanders Show
LiesTequila@reddit
One big commercial for Mario 3!
I saw it in the theater and at the reveal the entire theater lost its mind. It was the coolest thing I’ve ever seen happened in the movie theater.
mattdvs1979@reddit
Your headline is the best review of this movie ever, and I say that as somebody who unabashedly loves this movie.
Totally_Botanical@reddit
An hour and a half advertisement for Nintendo and Vision Street Wear
mutantbabysnort@reddit
Ok, so I’m not alone. We loved this movie as kids. It wasn’t only until I got older that I found out no one liked it.
“California….”
tallicafu1@reddit
The Send Me An Angel montage is incredible.
BomBiddyByeBye@reddit
My favorite terrible movie from that time period
elkniodaphs@reddit
I kill you, Achilles!!
Eledridan@reddit
They should really remake this.
wiserTyou@reddit
Hell yeah! I truly miss going to the movie store and picking out a B list movie.
Shinespark7@reddit
The whole plot falls apart if it weren't for Spanky. He's the real hero.
whyyoutwofour@reddit
Califooirniiaaaa
Physical-Name4836@reddit
I bought a power glove because of this movie. Might be my biggest regret ever
brokenman82@reddit
I rewatched this a few months ago. It was great! Super cheesy and a random great 80s song shoved in there. Very fun silliness that brought back some fun memories
Aggravating-Try1222@reddit
I found this movie incredibly boring, even as a Nintendo obsessed kid.
FinishingMyCoffee1@reddit
I loved it as a kid and watched it again a few years ago. Is it a commercial? Sure, but it's a damn good one. I thought it held up remarkably well as a product of its time. Beau Bridges is a delight and knows exactly what he's in
dufflebag7@reddit
I feel that almost every 80s movies only got approved for the merchandizing potential. Ever see Mac and Me? If you haven’t…..don’t
FinishingMyCoffee1@reddit
The movie? No.
The clip that Paul Rudd shows on Conan? About 300x over 25+ years
SanPadrigo@reddit
There is no FUCKING WAY that Jimmy would’ve known how to get that warp whistle in the castle on level 1.
I get that they were showing US where to find it, and I appreciate that, but c’mon.
Tight_Cheetah_4474@reddit
Jesus even as a child i knew this was a bad movie. I remember be so disappointed!! I wanted to like it so bad!! It had everything!! Fred Savage! The power Glove!! References to gaming culture in the 80s that should spark nostalgia! But oh god was it bad.
OGdrummerjed@reddit
The Nintendo add you had to go and pay to watch.
jimbswim@reddit
There is nothing terrible about this movie
GeetarEnthusiast85@reddit
I love this movie. Watched it a lot when I was a kid. I rediscovered it during the pandemic lockdowns and it became a comfort watch. During the lockdowns, I was furloughed from my job. Between my savings, unemployment and the stimulus checks I was fine financially so I just enjoyed my time. It ended up being the best summer of my adult life. I spent my days doing whatever I wanted, not getting up to an alarm, no obligations to anyone.
One of my fondest memories from that time was stating up late one night (like into the wee hours of the morning) watching old movies and finishing off a bottle of rum. I hadn't stayed up that late since I was a teenager. Anyway, I came across The Wizard on Amazon Prime and enjoyed the hell out of it. Maybe it was the rum talking that night but I remember feeling like I was on top of the world. I had so much freedom over my own time, my days. For a short while I wasn't beholden to a job or social obligations.
Now, whenever I hear "You Don't Get Much" by BoDeans*, I'm brought back to that feeling of being free.
*"You Don't Get Much" by BoDeans is the song that plays during the opening scene of The Wizard.
nounthennumbers@reddit
I love the Wizard. It’s so bad
Forward-Bank8412@reddit
The way he instinctively knows to crouch down for 5 seconds on a white block to go behind the scenes to get the warp whistle.
I could never suspend my disbelief enough.
That being said, SMB3 is one of mankind’s greatest creations.
BrooklynRobot@reddit
I had the poster!
Chunklob@reddit
I showed it to my 10y.o. He loved it.
