Holy shit this is such a throwback!! I loved this as a kid
worksnake@reddit
The older I get, the trippier this becomes. I mean, what kind of insane mind comes up with a song like this in a civilization with a base 10 number system?
iknowiknowwhereiam@reddit
They made lots of different songs about various numbers. This one was about 12 but I remember one about the number 8.
Zerkcie@reddit
I had never watched this stoned before tonight, was a lot tripper than I remember.
WineAndDogs2020@reddit
My guess would be because kids would see more face clocks at home and in school, which go to 12.
worksnake@reddit
Base 10, dude. Base 10.
TransportationOk657@reddit
That'd be my guess as well. We all had to learn how to read and rely on analog clocks back then.
foxontherox@reddit
I always preferred them- I could check how much time was left in class without having to do math in my head.
TransportationOk657@reddit
I disliked the clocks that didn't have the second hand in it, primarily those times while sitting in class waiting for the final minutes for it to end. The second hand made it feel like time was actually moving as opposed to the clocks with just the hour and minute hands.
Gonzostewie@reddit
It's not too tough in a 4-count song.

Likely a hippie mind thats burned out on lsd.

Which coincidentally makes great children’s programming!
Willing-Heart-8156@reddit
I still sing this song to myself today!🥹

This music theory guy broke this song down and was amazed at how complex it is. His other videos are pretty cool, too, even if you're not a huge music dork.

I occasionally chuckle to myself at the idea of starting a band that only plays Sesame Street Funk - which is a genre I invented which is primarily based around this specific song.
Stuck in your head? I get it. :D
Gonzostewie@reddit
Need a bass player?
Economy_Field9111@reddit
Well, I happen to play bass myself, but I see no reason we couldn't Spinal Tap this thing.

Same here. 😂

Auuuutoooooomatiiiic!
Still a banger.
CobraChickenNuggets@reddit
The album Break Out as a whole, was a banger.
I bought a mixed box of classic rock and pop vinyls at a garage sale for $10 back in the summer of 1995, and Break Out was tucked in at the very back, behind all the stuff I originally bought the box for.
Me and my friend were listening through the albums, and came across it. We both knew the song Jump and Neutron Dance, but weren't so sure about if we had heard Automatic. We decided to give it a listen, and it basically became the album of the rest of that summer.
We both made tapes of it, and would play it everywhere we'd go, eventually getting our other friends into it as well.
Those were the days.
I could go out to garage sales on the weekends as a teenaged music collector, buy up entire collections of vinyl off 30-60 somethings for next to nothing, because they wanted to get rid of it all after swapping over to CD's, then spent the rest of my week discovering musical gems.
Nipplasia2@reddit
I always thought automatic was a guy, and then I played Vice City and looked it up! I was always a pointer sisters fan an could not believe that was Ruth this whole time.

I’m currently buying all those cds they switched to at estate sales and it’s great. sings Circle of Life

Amazing song. I honestly wouldn’t even know what genre of music to classify this as. Jazz? Calypso?

It's funk

Sesame Street and a lot of those cartoons nailed NYC gritty in a way my ignorant Californian mind enjoyed for some reason. It felt real.
