I had a bunch over the years. I got them at Circuit City with the extended warranty, so when one broke (I was very hard on electronics), I'd take it back and they'd give me a new one. Sometimes multiple players in the same warranty period (I think two years?)
I went through batteries like nobody's business until I got rechargeable ones.
Then there was the giant cd binder that also went with me everywhere.
Same thought! Went through many, many of those...
"Skip Protection" never worked...
First CD player I got in my pickup (Christmas or '94) was stolen WITH "Vitalogy" in the drive. I was devastated.
I was broke and skipped over a CD player. I went cassettes to mini disc to mp3 player to ipod before i streamed exclusively. the only cd player i personally owned was in my car or PC.
Ha! Same, had an MDLP player, absolutely top of the line Sony one. Tiny thing, all metal. Such a lovely piece of kit. And useless within months as the media more or less disappeared from shops.
Might even still have one around... Probably one of the last ones Panasonic made. It is very slim, has amazing battery life with a rechargeable battery, is absolutely skip free and read MP3s off the disc.
It was very much from a time when solid state MP3 players were just starting to pick up in availability, maybe just around the second gen iPod came out?
I had a Sony car edition. It was a regular discman but came with a cigarette power adapter, cassette adapter and a back lit screen that had two color choices.
Had an RCA myself. I couldn’t walk around to show it off AND listen to music at the same time. I kept it on the nightstand and bought some like $20 speakers that would fit in the headphone jack. It would skip if I rolled over in bed sometimes. I ended up gluing together an anti-shock stand of modified pool noodles and kitchen sponges. It actually worked for the most part.
This is my second one. The first I had from like 2003-2015. All the rubberized plastic had turned to oily goo. I bought this second one a few months ago.
My mom got this one for jogging, and eventually I claimed it as mine for going rollerblading. Never felt more futuristic than when shuffling tracks on Stankonia with the little thumb stick on the top.
My first one was clunky as hell and took 4 AA batteries that were in a box that slid in. You got maybe 3cd's worth of music before the batteries died. However it was with me everywhere, along with the cassette adapter to use it in the car.
I upgraded to one of the first ones that played mp3's that only took 2 AA's. A burnt CD full of mp3's gave you like a day worth of music. Then the batteries died. I think I still have it in my basement along with a CD case full of burnt cd's comprised mostly of Napster and lime wire booty.
One? From 1997 through 2005, I went through five of them because I kept wearing them out and needing to replace them every 18-24 months. Went through 3 -4 car tape deck adapters, too.
Bizarrely, I used the same set of headphones the entire time and those were the foldable ones I had from my old, beloved WALKMAN, which was a hand-me-down from my older brother.
When I was in HS riding around with a Discman playing through a car kit? You couldn't tell me shit. I think I may have gone through two or three of those, myself.
I did, but not for long. I rocked a Panasonic Shockwave cassette player until college, preferred to make my own tapes and CD burning was still a ridiculous pain and expensive.
In college I had a little Maxell CD player. But frankly it was awful. Switched to an RCA Lyra MP3 player when it came out. Took SD cards, and had plenty of smaller ones kicking around from the lightning fast digital camera upgrade treadmill in the 2001-2004 timeframe.
I had one and took it with me everywhere in my giant JNCO pants. These were the only pants that had a pocket big enough (I’m a woman and we aren’t allowed pockets in our clothing, apparently.)
Had a Sony Discman with anti skip and bass boost. I believe it also came with rechargeable AAs that could charge in the player when it was plugged in.
It went everywhere. It plugged into the tape player adapter to listen to CDs in my first car. Then in college I ran it through a guitar amp and added car subwoofers to give myself a stereo system.
My 15 yo has one he takes with him to school. They banned phones in school this year and they are required to turn them in at the beginning of the day. He purchased a discman and headphones and uses them daily. I guess a few other students have asked about it as well.
...and they aren't good quality. The majority of new CD players now are garbage. Same with new tape decks. Your best bet is to go on eBay and get a used one from the 90's/early 2000's.
I would walk to and from college listening to Limp Bizkit and Slipknot with this in my pocket. The thing skipped though so I had to hold it the whole time.
My mom wouldn’t let me get one because she said I’d break it, but she bought me an Aiwa model for my 18th birthday that’s still around somewhere. I wouldn’t be surprised if it still works.
I had a Sony Discman. It is one of my favorite portable audio devices. I'm still saddened that I dropped and broke it. Had I not broken it, I would still have it.
I had a Sony Walkman and then a Discman. I eventually upgraded to one that could play MP3’s off a CD and had that 30-60 second skip protection as well. I should look around and see if I can find the, squirreled away somewhere in one of my box of cables.
I still occasionally use one to listen to audiobooks while doing house projects. I get cds from the library and hook the player to a little speaker. Cheap and works like a charm.

Same I had 3 or 4, or 5 as did everyone I know. Even my parents had them as they would listen to music while exercising at home and at gyms.

Nope, I used my walkman for a very long time. It worked better anyways.
thoughtfractals85@reddit
Fit perfectly in the pocket of my JNCO jeans.
SpreadDependent8805@reddit
That was me too. It was great for walking to work. Fit right in the back pocket no worries
thoughtfractals85@reddit
Yes! I did landscaping on a 300 acre campus for 3 summers as a teen, and that thing got me through.
WeirdObligation1002@reddit
Sure did. I had two then jumped to a minidisc just in time for the iPod to render it obsolete.

BongwaterJoe1983@reddit
My folks just got me the westinghouse version... if you breathed on it the cd would skip 🤦♂️
DirtyBirdDawg@reddit
The first one I got was made by Teac. It had no bass boost, no skip protection, and used a whopping four(!) AA batteries.
My second one was a Sony that was superior in every way. I wish I had gotten that one first.
Crowley-Barns@reddit
If you got the Teac one second you would have been WAY sadder.
DirtyBirdDawg@reddit
If I remember I think one of my aunts got it for me. She knew nothing about technology so I can't really blame her.
But still...4 AA batteries is a lot.

Back in the day, Sony was basically what Apple became in at the height of its success.

I had one with a 12v cigarette lighter and a cord going to the tape adapter, which was an upgrade from the FM transmitter dongle
SlavaSobov@reddit
Yeah until I had to keep it together with electrical tape. 😂
Then I saved up for an iPod Nano.
gooch_norris_@reddit

PersianCatLover419@reddit
Yes I did.
Dear-Discussion2841@reddit

Hell, I'm pretty sure that I still have one of those in a storage container somewhere in my house. Seeing this makes me want to go looking for it.
If it still works, I'm breaking out the Bone Thugs n Harmony's "East 1999 Eternal" and taking it back to 10th grade.
