I have started listening to classical music, on purpose, and I’m concerned.

Curious if it’s just me, or does this affect more of the ‘approaching elderly’ among us? I am still in my 40s and wasn’t prepared for this.
Dakkin4@reddit
I’ve listened to classical music since my Fine Arts class in high school. My shuffle could go from gangsta rap to Beethoven to Metal at any given moment.
ONROSREPUS@reddit
Brotha from another motha!
jasonrubik@reddit
Academic Decathlon in highschool did a number on me. I actually need to get back to my classical roots
Anahata_Green@reddit
Same. I've been listening to classical music since I was a teenager.
amindfulloffire@reddit
That's why I've a playlist just titled Anything--from the Beatles to Rage Against the Machine to Vivaldi and Beethoven.
GrungeCheap56119@reddit
Same haha

College for me. My friend was going on about how he got college credit for listening to Jimi Hendrix and the Stones, and that sounded cool to me. I wanted to sign up for Classic Rock, but instead signed up for Classical cause I’m kind of an idiot. But I have it a shot and really enjoyed it.

Look for the Bob Florence Orchestra, if you can find it. Truly amazing jazz, if you like big band.

I love spending a Friday evening at a local jazz club, sipping on some classy cocktails and enjoying jazz. From my own seat! So much better than a nightclub or loud ass bar.
canisdirusarctos@reddit
Mine as well. My CD case had so much variety and around a third were CDs of classical music.

I don't know the names of the classical music I like. I don't know the composers names. But I do sometimes appreciate and enjoy classical music.
Amazing-Treat-8706@reddit
First I was a rocker, then an EDM person. Lately I’ve been going to the symphony. Can highly recommend. If you’re not a fan of classical you can dip your toes by going to one of those ‘music or star wars’ or a video game music performance. A live symphony is dope. Try to get good seats so you can arch all the musicians well too.
the-cookie-momster@reddit
I listen to an unreasonable amount of Big Band and early 1900s music, but I always have ever since I was a teenager and a band nerd. I used to go get records from the flea market to listen to the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Artie Shaw and stuff. Now I can listen to it on XM radio, and I do pretty much every night before bed.
yourlittlebirdie@reddit
Have you seen the Glenn Miller movie with Jimmy Stewart?
the-cookie-momster@reddit
No, but it looks good! I'll have to check it out, thank you!

Same here. My ADHD brain has wait and bleed playing with the beat of flight of the bees while gargoyles are fighting the ninja turtles with cometary from mystery science theater robots are arguing with the old muppets in the balcony. WTF. I'm surprised I can focus enough to to operate an excavator
morganford78@reddit
Just wait, soon you'll start paying more attention to birds....
William_Shaftner@reddit
But birds are such amazing creatures! And raptors, don’t get me going about raptors.
MiniRems@reddit
One day I was watching a fledgling blue jay hopping around the shrubs in my front yard, and seemingly from out of nowhere, a red tailed hawk swooped down and snapped it up. It was the most horrible and awesome thing I'd ever seen!
Also love reading all the idiots complaining on Nextdoor about the hawks leaving bits of rabbits and squirrels in their yard, demanding someone do something about the "eagle problem" 🤣
William_Shaftner@reddit
I was walking next to a local park when I noticed a tiny feather floating down in front of my face. And then another. And then enough more started dropping that I started looking around.
And in the branches in the tree above me a hawk was just chowing down on a bird. It was so metal.

My parents for years only called me to update me on the blue Jay and hummingbird drama and last year it just kinda stuck. Now I have my own bird drama to watch at my feeder and bird bath
ThePerfectSnare@reddit
Is that a thing? I ask because a close friend recently pointed out how much I talk about spotting certain birds and recognizing bird calls these days. I've started collecting feathers too. This was not planned.
ObligationJumpy6415@reddit
Have you downloaded the Merlin app? Identifies birds by their songs. It’s on my phone home screen next to the Seek app (identifies plants/animals/bugs).

I did that in college which led t film scores and show tunes. I’ve listened to and learned to like a pretty broad range of music after high school, even country (the old stuff)
amindfulloffire@reddit
I've enjoyed classical music since I was a kid, so I don't see it as an elderly thing.
lazyMarthaStewart@reddit
I have a theory that it's because we were raised with culture, from Bugs Bunny to Mr Rogers.
dinosandbees@reddit
We joke, but there's soooo much classical music our generation knows or recognizes purely from watching Looney Tunes.
lazyMarthaStewart@reddit
Oh, absolutely. My favorite opera is still The rabbit is deeaaddd! No, really, I recognized at some point all the music we were exposed to.
dinosandbees@reddit
“Kill the wabbit, kill the wabbit!”

Also a lot of movie scores. John Williams, Danny Elfman, Ennio Morricone. A lot of them were influenced by older composers, and their music can easily blend into the older classics.

Nah, makes sense. My Xer spouse was the original Hip Hop head (I made the mistake of telling him about an interview I heard on NPR of an author of a new book on Tupac... And my spouse is not even a Tupac fan, but he proceeded to tell me more than I needed to know about Tupac's history) but he prefers to listen to our classical radio station and our PBS-run jazz station over anything else.
I don't even know how to turn regular radio on in our car, unfortunately, which leaves me listening to King Gizzard and... King Gizzard. Could be worse, but sometimes I need a change.
Oye_Oso@reddit
Classical kicks ass. At times, Bach and Beethoven can be so, so metal. Don't even get me started on Vivaldi. And Rachmaninoff? Check out that 2nd Piano Concerto of his for a most wonderous musical experience.

agentmkultra666@reddit
Oop *The Rite of Spring
Brb gotta go blast some Stravinsky thanks to this post
paradox183@reddit
Classical music, more than with any other genre IMO, allows you to listen to the same piece 20 times and hear something new every time. Whether it’s within a piece itself (different subtle harmonies layered throughout the orchestra) or the performance of it (different musicians/orchestras won’t all play a piece the exact same way) it’s really a gift that keeps giving. There’s absolutely no shame in enjoying it.
dinosandbees@reddit
The way I checked out a CD of a favorite piece from the library (god, I feel so old saying that sentence) and RAGED because "How did this performance get recorded? It's so bland, so emotionless! It's not even the same piece of music!"
The orchestra makes *such* a difference to the music being played.
pug_fugly_moe@reddit
Rite of Spring was djent before djent. A hill I die on.
icepick3383@reddit
Mars, the bringer of war by Holst is essentially prog metal.
I don’t listen to classical very often, but when I’m in the mood, nothing else scratches that itch. I also love symphonic prog like yes, Spock’s beard, Emerson, Lake & Palmer.
bscott59@reddit
It's calming and less distracting. I've enjoyed classical music since my 20s but I listen to it more frequently now (partially because my wife is a cellist). The local classical radio station doesn't have ads, there's few lyrics (operas), and overall it puts me in a more positive mood.
platywus@reddit (OP)
Discovering the lower part of the FM dial is enlightening. I’m able to learn more about the influential composers and directors between pieces.
yourlittlebirdie@reddit
I highly recommend the podcast “Sticky Notes” if you want to learn more cool details and info about individual pieces! It really helps you understand the music on a much deeper level.
Here’s a great one about Rhapsody in Blue: https://stickynotespodcast.libsyn.com/gershwin-rhapsody-in-blue
It can get a touch music theory wonky at times, but for the most part, it’s pretty accessible even if you don’t have a music theory background.

While classic rock and grunge are and have always been my mainstays, I have listened to classical music since I was a teenager.
NighthawkCP@reddit
Pretty similar for me as well. I'm more into rock/metal and bluegrass, but I really got into classical as well as movie soundtracks in middle school when I started taking concert band classes and playing the Trombone. My randomized playlists on Spotify will sometimes have a random Mozart or Holst song as well as a John Williams march or Hans Zimmer track. Hell I got to see Hans Zimmer live in concert last year and it was awesome!
jdoe36@reddit
My love of classical music and movie soundtracks was also sparked by band, particularly high school marching band. One year we did a show based on Dvorak's New World Symphony, and another year we did Jerry Goldsmith's The Wind and the Lion.
NighthawkCP@reddit
Yea marching band was clutch as well. We did a First Knight show one year, which was another Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack and I liked it so much I bought the soundtrack on CD! We did a jazz show another year, so that got me more into jazz music, which I sometimes indulge in at a friends jazz bar nowadays.

Depending on your taste, the real metal composers are Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, Mahler, Dvorak, and Stravinsky.

ham_solo@reddit
I don't find this odd at any age. Personally, I hate the term 'classical' music. It sounds so stuffy. I prefer 'orchestral', or 'symphonic', for large orchestras and 'chamber' music for smaller groups. There is tons of amazing orchestral music written in the 20th-century, so I wouldn't call it 'classical'
I personally like the 20th-century composers best - Ravel, Bartok, Debussy, and Penderecki if you wanna get NUTS.
It's very relaxing music, but also can be challenging in the way that a puzzle or game can be.
AdComprehensive7939@reddit
Classically trained musician here, so it's always been normal for me (I was obsessed throughout childhood.) I like/have played in rock and country bands too but in recent years I've become obsessed w jazz. Have been teaching myself jazz piano for a few years now. Never thought I'd be into jazz, but it feels like the ultimate form for a player. It makes me think about what it wouldve been like in the earlier 20th century, when many people had pianos at home and spent time together playing and singing. I wish humans still casually did that but I think screens killed it.

I've been listening to it ny whole life, as Looney Tunes used that stuff all the time. But I've been actively listening to classical music since middle school. I've been in bands most of my life and have written a lot of songs, but I went to school for music and have written some ensemble pieces. I studied violin starting at age 8, so I’ve always loved classical music. Classical isn’t an age thing. It’s more popular outside of the US among people of all ages in my experience.
If you’re in the US, we mostly aren’t taught how to listen to it here and appreciate the complexity of it. Classical is the one kind of music I can’t listen to while working or doing other tasks because it requires my full attention to really enjoy it, and I’m totally indisposed when I’m listening.

Honestly, you probably transitioned from watching alot movies and consciously or subconsciously enjoying the scores. Many scores have classical similarities due to orchestral involvement as they tend to take on many classical songs. I personally can listen to classical, but not for very long, too stripped down for me. It's like me, as a Native American liking Native American music for what it is, usually flute work and drums, often times together, with very bare bones production - and then listening to modern produced "nordic/viking" music which play on the same basic idea but with added layers or productive accompaniments and I enjoy it way more.

I listen to ballets while writing work reports. It makes me feel like an artist composing with words.
yourlittlebirdie@reddit
I find that listening to movie scores while working makes writing my budget reports feel like I’m doing something epic and mysterious instead.
1ndomitablespirit@reddit
Not prepared for what? Maturity and a refined sense of taste?
Knowledge_VIG@reddit
I still listen to that shit. I've been listening to it since I was a teenager along with all the other music genres I like. It's quite relaxing.
junto80@reddit
Life is complicated enough, I’ve no time for lyrics.
Cosmohumanist@reddit
No kidding. “Stop telling me what to think! I got shit to do over here!”
yourlittlebirdie@reddit
I’ve always been into classical music and I’m realizing now that I’m no longer “the young person” at symphony concerts 😞
Majestic-Marzipan621@reddit
It's wonderful to drive to.
marcos_MN@reddit
I don’t understand this post. What’s concerning?
Procrasturbating@reddit
I picked up classical in my 30s and it lead to me producing EDM after figuring out where they were stealing all of the good melodies from.
xRVAx@reddit
Wait until you start to distinguish classical music from late baroque and Romantic era 🤓
Stitchin_Squido@reddit
Classical and neoclassical music is my jam, especially for morning music. I even dabble in ambient. Throw in some morose violins and I am hooked.
Yes, I was huge into the punk scene circa 1998-2004. Yes, I played all the screamy songs at high volume. Yes, I liked being as close as I could to the amp so that the sonic waves could tear my atoms apart and I could become one with the music.
But, I’m old boss. Let me rest to the scrapes of a bow over strings….maybe some floaty jazz flute…and a cappuccino.
madgirafe@reddit
I started listening to Wreckno, we're all cracking a little I think. 🫠
Sausage_Queen_of_Chi@reddit
I’ve always listened to classical music, my dad loved it and that’s what he’d listen to in the car, and also I was in orchestra in high school.
And there are some real bangers! Listen to the last movement of Dvorak’s New World Symphony, it was John Williams’s inspiration for the Star Wars themes.
Anyway, these days I still like classical music especially in the evening when I’m trying to help my brain wind down.
zerombr@reddit
Idk about you but it really seems to shift my mind greatly anymore.
CrosseyedCletus@reddit
I dunno, but I’ve been diving headlong into soft rock and it is so relaxing. Turns out I’m a huge Steely Dan fan (not exactly soft rock, but who knew). A sunset, a cigar, and Steely Dan is basically my favorite thing now. I used to be a punk. I tell myself this is my version of aging gracefully.
Hopepersonified@reddit
I do it too and I'm more likely to speed while it's on.
Background-Student62@reddit
I’ve been attending Candlelight Concert Series which is a drastic difference between all the festivals and concerts I’ve attended. It happens
gpo321@reddit
Had a math teacher in 8th grade that would play classical music in the classroom. She swore it made students perform better.
JeffTS@reddit
I don't mind classical. Every once in a great while, I'll give it a listen. If I need mellow though, I usually switch over to acoustic music.
braywarshawsky@reddit
Nothing wrong with classical music... it depends on the mood, and situation.
Personally I listen to it while at work. It helps me to focus. Always has.
jar36@reddit
I'm getting close at 50. I started playing it for my cannabis plants this year, so it's on when I'm tending to them. I feel like a character in a movie that the main character is going to have meet while I'm doing this. Half expecting Keanu Reeves to walk through the door lol
It sets a nice mood and makes me take my time a bit. I feel more relaxed while I work, making it much more enjoyable
InertPistachio@reddit
Are you recreating that scene in Minority Report in your head lol
jar36@reddit
probably a mix of several flicks lol

Is THAT how you get the weed that calms you down instead of making you anxious? 😉
Sirtriplenipple@reddit
You just have to learn what the terpenes do to you, then you can craft whatever experience you want. Calm you down, you are going to want Myrcene, Linalool, and Caryo.
kenyafeelme@reddit
No. You aren’t special
No-Championship-8677@reddit
I’ve listened to classical regularly since my early 20s! It doesn’t mean you’re old, just that you appreciate music
Express-Cow190@reddit
Nothing wrong with or old about it. With people making AI music now I’m just happy to listen to anything composed and performed by people.
But if you need to check yourself, listen to “Bassthoven” by Kyle Exum. It’s a rap song set to Fur Elise.
redditsuckshardnowtf@reddit
I've never liked classical music, my blood boils whenever I hear it being played.
CuriousRiver2558@reddit
Instrumental music in general appeals to me now. Basically Muzak. I have stations like “music for studying” and instrumental hip hop. Perfect for background music in the office.
flowbkwrds@reddit
I grew up listening to classical music with my grandparents. I had a few favorite songs back then. They'd bring me to the local symphony performances sometimes and I enjoyed them. I still go catch a classic performance when I can. I also love a good rock concert and spent my teens and 20s hanging out with death metal bands.
Quirin_Cottonbriefs@reddit
Or maybe you were raised in a lower class household? Weird to comment that I concerns you.
platywus@reddit (OP)
Grew up in a very working-class small home in a rust belt Great Lakes city(proudly, might I add.). Loving parents and home surrounded with pop and rock music. I suppose my parents were not raised with classical in their homes, so they didn’t play it themselves. My father listened to a lot of 60s Motown and pop, my mother had affection for the Michael Jackson and Huey Lewis side of things. I loved it all.
Quirin_Cottonbriefs@reddit
Oh. So you did. Still strange you find it concerning.
VampireOnHoyt@reddit
I started really getting into opera in the last couple years. Love what you love.
Intelligent-Camera90@reddit
I put it on occasionally when I’m working on something boring, but i really need focus.
Mostly just putting on a classical station, but sometimes I’ll put on a movie soundtrack (like LOTR) or anything John Williams has scored.
Specialist-Job-509@reddit
Classical music is like nails on a chalkboard to me and always will be but that’s because I’m a real one and obviously you never were. (I’m gonna put the /s here even though I think it’s obvious so no one thinks I’m being a jerk.)
jasonmoyer@reddit
Are you getting more intelligent? That's likely a bigger correlator to listening to classical music than getting old is.
platywus@reddit (OP)
I am more philosophical and introspective than ever. However, I’m not sure if it’s reactionary to current times or just aging rapidly.
TheDavidCall@reddit
Pshhhh. I’m 42 and have always enjoyed some classical. It’s okay to be moved by more things than what we listened to in high school :) To me it means you’re growing, not shrinking.
magsli@reddit
I work as an arts and classical music producer in public radio and podcasting for the last 20+ years. And I have played the cello since I was 8. This is not concerning, this is a good thing. The mission in our work is to try and help people learn about it and love it. I honestly love to hear that you’re listening and concerned. That means you’re fighting but your mind and body are telling you that you love it. Embrace it. It’s beautiful and a foundational form of musical composition. You’ve evolved and now that you listen, you will absolutely have a new and better understanding and outlook on the world. Enjoy!!!
SplakyD@reddit
I've always listened to it a little bit. Earlier this year, I heard some Philip Glass chamber music called "Glassworks" on my local NPR station that I'd highly recommend to anyone here. It came out in 1981 and it was his attempt to be more pop oriented and "Walkman suitable," and I know how much we love our Walkmans around here. But check it out!
Exciting_Squirrel_84@reddit
I've been sprinkling classic and jazz since my teens.
I'm more concerned with how much I am loving vaporware because it is 1993 hold music.

I was actually far more into classical music (especially oratorio) when I was a teenager than I am today, but I still love classical music.

Merentha8681@reddit
I've really gotten into blues music.
DiaDeLosMuebles@reddit
I’ve always listened to it. I find it fascinating that you’ve denied yourself good music because you perceived it as “old people music”
John_481@reddit
As long as you like the movie Amadeus, it’s OK.
NopeYupWhat@reddit
I think as long fall into the trap of all the new music sucks you’re not getting old and can listen to whatever you want. Q
mysticalsnowball@reddit
Yes me too! My home pod has free classical so I put it on for my kids regularly. It’s so soothing
cantwejustplaynice@reddit
I've been listening to symphonic music since Star Wars came out. John Williams effectively scored my childhood so I've always had a place in my music library and in my heart for orchestral works.
MrsJennyAloha@reddit
We listen but just because it’s safe music for the whole family
cartoonchris1@reddit
I listen to classical when I’m reading or if something I’m working on needs 99.9% concentration (animator, lots of keyframes to keep track of) where I can’t listen to podcasts, audiobooks, or ‘normal’ music. Most of the time if I’m listening, it’s audiobooks though.
ezmoney98@reddit

I’ve been listening to classical music since setting Fantasia at like age 5.

I went to see the Swan Lake ballet a few years ago and fell pretty hard for Tchaikovsky. I've always liked Chopin as well, especially the Pianist soundtrack.

My mix is Perry Como, Zeppelin, the Tron Legacy soundtrack, Nirvana, Scattman Corthers, Weird Al and the Loop Hero soundtrack.
I've been working my way back in time but new alternative rock still slaps as well.
This_hoe_dumb@reddit
I listen to classical to help me focus. The music drowns out the constant chatter in my brain without the need to focus on the words. 🤷♀️
jjmawaken@reddit
I love classical music 20 years ago. It actually mixes really nice with rock music. And video games. The orchestral sound tracks from Mario Galaxy are really great to listen to.
Golden_Enby@reddit
If a CD isn't playing in my car, I'm listening to my local classical station. My mother raised me on classical music, along with rock and metal, so it's always been important to me. I've always thought that if people like movie, game, or series OSTs, they like classical music.
Not sure why you'd be concerned about suddenly liking classical music. It's been proven to be good for your brain. Enjoy it all you want with no shame. ✌️

I've found it's great at calming the nerves. We've used it on road trips to silence children bickering, seemed to work for us.
elkniodaphs@reddit
I hope we're not forgetting that we all grew up listening to classical music by design as it was featured in the cartoons we watched, and countless other programs we might have seen like Great Performances, Sesame Street, or Carl Sagan's Cosmos, not to mention the hand-me-down records I was personally spinning in my room in 1985. The fact that we will sometimes return to things we did as kids is not surprising on a subreddit driven by nostalgia.
effugium1@reddit
I’ve like it since I was a child, but I can relate because there’s plenty of music I didn’t like in the 90s that I do now.
ElvisAaron@reddit
Same and now Ive started composing it, have even released some. My teen grunge band self would be disappointed. Enjoy!!

Back in college I took a music appreciation class as an elective.
First day, this older ZZ Top looking guy walks in. Leather vest, big beard, somewhat intimidating.
He goes to the podium, and very excitedly begins to talk about the importance of music, but especially opera and classical music. He talks about how much he enjoys gardening and the beauty of music.
He would play operatic performances for us, but would pause videos pretty frequently and go on a tangent about certain arias and the history behind them, and get really exuberant while doing so.
That semester, I didn't really learn much about music appreciation, but definitely learned:
Never judge a book by its cover
Be into whatever the hell you enjoy because life is too short.

I listen to modern instrumental, Lindsey Stirling, Two Cellos, Two steps from Hell, escala. Glitch Mob. I feel less old that way. 😅
monsterlynn@reddit
I was raised with it. I started choosing for myself what classical to listen to when I was about 16, though generally it's not a go-to as much as it used to be.
ThepalehorseRiderr@reddit
I have recently gained an obsession with Steve Winwood. Shit gets weird when we get old I guess.
