I had that mug !!!!!!!!!!!
TarrTheDragon@reddit
Holy shit. Lead Garfield mug. I also live my mug but unfortunately do not drink from it due to disclosed reasons.
Difficult_Fuel9972@reddit
Had this same exact cup in early 90s
StepSasquatch@reddit
Dang I had one of these as a kid 😳
Ill-Ground-2475@reddit
My mom used to have this mug! No idea if she still does but so cool to see someone else with it and be reminded of a random little relic of my childhood.
Freespeak79@reddit
Man i had those. Think i still do somewhere, memories!
MleemMeme@reddit (OP)
You guys, your comments gave me the impression this mug may have lead in in. Therefore i will discontinue drinking my chocolate milk from it and will henceforth use my uranium goblet.
MadamTruffle@reddit
It’s fine, lead is in the paint on the outside. As long as the paint isn’t chipped and you’re not licking it, you’re not getting lead poisoning.
LiftingRecipient420@reddit
Not worth the risk, the lead paint breaks off as dust and contaminates everything around it.
Starfire2313@reddit
Kids are also more susceptible to the effects because their brains and nervous systems are still developing into their younger 20’s.
IdLikeToOptOut@reddit
I used to love drinking chocolate milk out of a similar mug at my grandfather’s house. I didnt understand why the mug tasted so good but i definitely spent time trying to eat the paint off of it. 🥴
lamborghinymercy@reddit
If you run these cups in the dishwasher the lead can break free and end up contaminating all your dishes in particulate form. Be cautious handwashing these as well.
dusty__rose@reddit
wish i’d known that a few weeks ago! 😭 i bought a set of these secondhand and ran them in the dishwasher. dammit lol. i’ll just have to not do it again i guess
MadamTruffle@reddit
Yup! Good point!
jfk_47@reddit
But when i lick it it makes my tongue feel funny.

It makes thinking too hard less of a problem also. Thinking sucks. I prefer to just have unregulated emotions.
MjrLeeStoned@reddit
You can get lead exposure without getting lead poisoning.
It doesn't take much lead to hit heavy metal toxicity levels, but unless you're exposed over time, most mild effects don't register or your body can recover from.
nokiacrusher@reddit
And yet, airplanes are still using leaded fuel.

Just the small planes though, right?
Commercial Jets fazed out the lead in favor of the mind control drugs they release.

tealraven915@reddit
I drank coffee for the first time from this mug when I was 7 at my grandma's house. She later gave me the mug and I drank out of it a bunch of times. I don't know what happened to it. Lead would explain a lot
Curiosityrover101@reddit
I don’t know, I saw another post with this mug, and the comments were going crazy about using it or not using it. Then one comment posted that it wasn’t even a real thing and that it was made up, so who knows it’s the Internet
fenwayismyway@reddit
oh dope do you have some uranium glass? its cool right. where did you find yours? i found mine at a local church thrift store
jafjaf23@reddit
Noooo :( In 700 million years it'll ju a t be lead again!
user18name@reddit
My parents still have and use this mug, it was my favorite growing up. Now I’m wondering what shape it’s in.
randybutterknubz@reddit
If it makes you feel better, I have one as well gifted to me and now think I need to toss it.
mwpdx86@reddit
As long as the glaze isn't cracked on the goblet, you should be ok.
No-Vegetable-6521@reddit
Dang I had a couple of those as a kid
Naptasticly@reddit
Those cups have lead in them
jsand2@reddit
I am 99% sure I had that mug as a kid! I feel like there was a set of them with different Garfield images. Maybe they came from somewhere like McDonalds?
Novel-Technician6360@reddit
We had those. Mom probably still does
shaithiswampir@reddit
I do believe my mother still has this mug. Will ask later when I stop by
On_Wife_support@reddit
I have a couple of these in the glass cabinet in my current residence and when my mom gave them to me I had no intention of drinking out of them mainly because I think they were used for water color and paint brush water when I was a kid but also because I read that there may be lead in the paint

There's no hate I loved chocolate milk but, fucking lactose intolerance fucked me over, now its dairy free vegan oat chocolate milk. I also use my special mug that holds two pints to drink it with.
sgrapevine123@reddit
Just take lactase. It's the enzyme your body stopped producing, making you lactose intolerant. Lactaid etc will give you milk-drinking superpowers.
yowie-yahoo@reddit
My dad drinks lactose free milk and one time I looked at the ingredients and it was straight up just milk with lactase lol
Chris_Wilson14@reddit
I'll give it a shot but, I'm always leery if I'm honest.
sgrapevine123@reddit
Give it a google. It’s literally just the exact enzyme that human digestive tracts stop producing. It’s responsible for breaking down lactose into glucose and galactose. You can also buy lactose-free cow milk (the dairy adds the lactase for you) which is indistinguishable from regular milk.
Significant-Gap1256@reddit
I like vegan chocolate milk like oat, almond, etc, but actual chocolate milk is just so good. And i have lactose intolerance too but sometimes I’ll just deal with it cause i love chocolate milk so much. Plus my lactose intolerance isnt that severe, just bad gas mostly.
Chris_Wilson14@reddit
I'm jealous, mine gives me extreme pain.

potliquorz@reddit
Me too, I was a Garfield fan and had all the books. I remember getting a new one at the bookstore and laughing so hard I had to catch my breath. Most of our glasses were some kind of collectible or plastic cups from fast food joints. Bowls that saw the most use were cool whip or country crock.
Menareinsecure@reddit
Country crock and cool whip, cereal bowls were the best. I wonder how many microplastics are in my testicles
Awkwardpanda75@reddit
It took me months to recover from the Garfield Christmas special when odie got locked up in the shelter on Christmas.
Troutalope@reddit
Exactly the same. All the big cups were some sort of commerative plastic fast food deals and lots of store brand margarine containers. Thats why the Garfield ones were so cool, they were glass.
Tough_Trifle_5105@reddit
Well, that explains some things
bigredmachinist@reddit
Boom roasted
DJDevon3@reddit
Same, they were collectibles but I think there were only like 4-5 different ones from what I remember. These were the introduction to drinking out of glass cups for a lot of kids at that time. Of course we broke all of them eventually over the years but they were my favorite too.
midevilmarcellus@reddit
Came here to say this, it’s a whole Reddit conspiracy lol
banana__banana@reddit
Definitely not a conspiracy. McDonald’s has had to recall different glass cups over the years for heavy metal contamination.
midevilmarcellus@reddit
I know, someone posted this same cup last week
EatAndGreet@reddit
Yeah these old McDonald's Garfield mugs have lead and cadmium in the paint. I wouldn’t worry like tooo much, but I'd recommend not drinking out of it anymore. Use it to put pens or whatever you want in there.
MooPig48@reddit
I read that as “use it to put penis or whatever you want in there@ and realized I’ve been on Reddit too long

Strange_N_Sorcerous@reddit

Immediate-Hamster724@reddit
I mean, we have to balance out all of the microplastics we’re already full of.
Mean-Astronomer4U@reddit
Only in the paint.
sagey@reddit
Azure_Rob@reddit
The claim (widely copied, never citing testing processes) is that the paint is 100,000 ppm lead.
One hundred thousand parts per million, so it'd be 10% lead, roughly 4 times higher than the highest lead contents cited when the 1977 lead ban went in place.
These 1987 mugs are fine. This is social media age urban legend.
Ur-Quan_Lord_13@reddit
I dunno about the specific story of these mugs... But every few years there's a new story about goods from China using lead and cadmium paint. Including, I remember, a recall around 2010, right around the time I received a red mug made in China :| And apparently a children's toys recall round 2021?
And googling shows that 10% is not an unreasonable lead content in lead-based paint, it could go as high as 50% and 5-20 seems common.
So... Where were these mugs made? :p
ExcelsiorUnltd@reddit
The paint is on the outside of the mug
lchen12345@reddit
I broke a couple of those in the mid 80s, I got from McD's I think.

pm_me_exotic_cake@reddit
Apparently its only in the paint or if you break the glass in little pieces. My sister uses these mugs a lot and she reminds me about this reddit factoid about once a month.

TriplicateGirl@reddit
These cups don't have lead, it's a misunderstanding of copyright date that Reddit has latched on to and repeats every time these cups pop up. McDonald's did get sued in the 70s for having lead in the paint on the outside of the cups, and since these cups have a copyright of 1978, people just put the two together.
These cups came out in the late 80s, 10 years after the lead incident. They just used 1978 because that was the initial copyright of Garfield.
TheJBW@reddit
I was also skeptical of the copyright date since Garfield didn’t look like that in 1978

Objective-Ad9767@reddit
I still have one! It’s the one with Garfield, Odie, Nermal, Arlene and Pooky 🧸 on a seesaw. Garfield on one end and those others on the opposite side. Of course Garfield is the heaviest. 😂
N64GC@reddit
People talk about the lead, but I worry about the hatred of Mondays poisoning
rexyaresexy@reddit
I wish i was as cool as you
Ok_Procedure7492@reddit
That mug came from McDonald’s I believe. I have one too
Content-Gap-7887@reddit
Pretty sure theres lead in my water… and probably in the paint of this 110 year old house. What can ya do!
MleemMeme@reddit (OP)
Just drink chocolate milk until our inevitable lead poisoning deaths!
gpuyy@reddit
That’s a win win right there OP
HumorTerrible5547@reddit
That's not from 1978. Garfield didn't look like that until at least the mid 80s
No-Walrus8985@reddit
Holy crap I have 2 of these mugs (one of them is almost completely blank because the paint scratched off).
Had no idea how old they were or that there lead in them
GrammaIsEvryfing@reddit
"Use" your friends wisely. Ok Garfield....ok
endofthefkingworld@reddit
there is no maximum age to enjoy chocolate milk
MaeByourmom@reddit
We had these 🥲 My kids had Curious George jelly jar glasses. Only one left, I keep it with my Japanese tableware, ie the good stuff.
canisdormit@reddit
I had the whole set of these as a child, until my dad's whore girlfriend smashed them all one day. There was one that I had in my room at the time, and I still have that one (it's the one with the hammock) and I have used it. I still use it for coffee. And I've known about the lead for a long time. Incidentally my dad's shitty gf that broke all the rest of my glasses ended up getting half exploded by a truck when she walked into the street without looking. I may have distracted her, I can't remember.
PoppaDaClutch@reddit
Definitely not 1978 lmao
Canelosaurio@reddit
What video games are you playing today?
vladutzu27@reddit
Is it really from 1978? I know Garfield began on 19 June 1978 and had a different design for a while, and I remember the Christmas strip being him saying that it’s his first Christmas but I remember him still looking robust
MleemMeme@reddit (OP)
Early in the comments we established i mistook the trademark year for the production year.
vladutzu27@reddit
Sowwy didn’t see I got a little excited I love garf
Longjumping-Elk1110@reddit
Came here because of the led guy. Was not the first it would seem

I had this same mug when I was a youngster
txwoodslinger@reddit
You're never too old to enjoy choccy milk
i_am_lizard@reddit
Did Garfield just tell me to fuck my friends again? Well, if he insists, I gotta.
CretaciousPeriod@reddit
Oh, wow. I used to have a couple of those. I wonder what happened to them, I'm sure they probably got thrown away at some point.

Tempest_Fugit@reddit
Dude that’s the syndicate date for when garfield was first registered. Garfield started publishing in 1978. This mug came out in the 80s
Shehulks1@reddit
I remember those cups 🤭🤭🤭 core memory unlocked
elocin1985@reddit
I loved these mugs. My grandma had a set of them at her house and I always drank out of them. Yes, lead, I know.
buglefingies@reddit
The re our tbat these have cadmium and lead in it came from a mommy blogger and has never been verified
Ireallywannamove@reddit
Hi I think your mug might have lead on it. Have you been alerted?
Ornery-Anteater-5056@reddit
Are you sure? Haven't read that before
Hicks_206@reddit
Could be wrong but as another relic of the 20th: I had glasses like that and they were absolutely using lead based something on the outside paint.
SugarBee702@reddit
I have a glass cup very similar to yours. It’s also from 1978. Mine has Garfield laying on a hammock with the dog pulling on it. Garfield is saying “ It’s not a pretty life but someone has to live it.” Is yours also from McDonald’s? This has me wondering if there’s a collection of these glass mugs?
namedjughead@reddit
I have the same mug (44 btw). I use it to store paint brushes, and after reading all the comments about lead, I’m glad I do.
badcrumbs@reddit
I have the same cup!

Additional_Try_5378@reddit
I think the mug is from the late 1980s. I had one and used it for my orthodontic retainers.
Margray@reddit
I have the same mug. I knew I had it since I was a kid but I didn't know it was several years older than me. Bad news for all the millennials, the mug lead is the least of our problems.
KiloWatson@reddit
Oh, you. You’re so quirky.
Highfromyesterday@reddit
You should test that cup for lead
Feeling_Pool_767@reddit
this mug is hard
MjrLeeStoned@reddit
They were still making these into the early 80s, we had a few of them.
Funny story, the first time I ever passed out was because we dropped and broke one of these, I stepped on a shard of glass and my foot started pouring blood. As soon as I saw it, I lost consciousness immediately. I was probably 5 years old.
Rosscovich@reddit
Wait lead? Fuck. We had a few of these and I used them all the time as a kid.
Halogen32@reddit
Garfield encouraging the use of friends as a means to an end has the power to bring Kant back to life
adept_ignoramus@reddit
I had some CM in my one of Burger King issued (1980) Empire Strikes Back glasses yesterday. I'm 49. (You weren't even alive in '78, but ok.)
DeepThoughtsbyJackH@reddit
Garfield is great memories
TypeOpostive@reddit
Aw I love it
rosujin@reddit
These mugs must have been produced multiple times. I know for a fact that I had this exact mug and one more of Garfield and Odie on a canoe. But I was born in ‘78 and I think I got them as some kind of giveaway at Carl’s Jr. in the mid/late 80s.
gingamann@reddit
I have the same exact mug.
I am also 45.
Bruh
Shaved-Yak@reddit
I am surprised that glass is from 1978 as that is when Garfield was created. I had the same glasses but were bought about 84.
MindHead78@reddit
Yeah, this is what Garfield looked like in 1978: https://garfield-comic-strips.fandom.com/wiki/1978
MleemMeme@reddit (OP)
I think i mistook the copyright date on the glass for the production date.
fingersmaloy@reddit
Yeah, and wasn't he drawn pretty differently back then?

I drink voting-age scotch from a 1995 Batman Forever McDonald's crystal mug 🦇

Then it will be a handy mug to have if the electricity goes out. 😏

Efficient_Ostrich_54@reddit
Apparently you got that mug before you were born?
CakeMadeOfHam@reddit
I once met a woman who bought Jim Davis' house.
iksnel@reddit
This can't be a 1978 mug, this wasn't the design of Garfield early on. The first year or so he was fatter and had a smaller head, plus wasn't hugely popular right out of the gate to warrant cups.
Safe-Magazine-244@reddit
Chocolate milk is not shitty food, no matter the brand!
CuteFormal9190@reddit
Had this same mug when I was a kid. I think it came from Burger King if I’m not mistaken.
fnsamsquanch@reddit
Wow. I remember my mom having this one. Guess I might have a wee bit of lead in me, huh? The comments make me think maybe.

mashupbabylon@reddit
If you drink out of this mug everyday, you become immune to bullets. Like a vaccine for lead.
smilaise@reddit
I had this cup. Wow, memories are weird. I think mine said something else though.
Kado_Cerc@reddit
The lead makes that shit taste immaculate
bootyholeboogalu@reddit
Store brand l? you're 45 and you can't afford Nestle quick? At least get Ovaltine
MossyForestWitch@reddit
I made soy milk with nesquik tonight 🤣
bootyholeboogalu@reddit
Im.... Sorry?
MossyForestWitch@reddit
I've been drinking it for 20+ years. It's just milk to me now. Lactose intolerant, but I never liked how dry and filmy regular milk left my mouth, lol
Suspicious-Pea-7481@reddit
Looks good to me!
chris00ws6@reddit
Walmart and Aldi chocolate milk is best chocolate milk and to say otherwise is treason.
Suspicious-Pea-7481@reddit
Oh I'm sure it is! I love chocolate milk, and I don't buy name brand, who can afford that? I only say don't drink the milk, because it's in a cup with a lead in cadmium particles in the paint.
MossyForestWitch@reddit
Well the lead and cadmium paint is only on the outside.
Suspicious-Pea-7481@reddit
Well, drink up then! Lol
chris00ws6@reddit
Ahh I took it as don’t drink store brand. Not just this specific cup of milk ha. Touché.
Dankestmemes420ii@reddit
Nah I’ve had chocolate milk out of those type of mugs and it’s unmatched 😭

MossyForestWitch@reddit
Same, Same. And the chemicals were in the paint only, on use outside. We're probably find unless we licked the exterior a lot.
Healthy_Macaron2146@reddit

Zonel@reddit
The garfield mugs had lead in em

I have this mug and it's one of my favorites!
squibm4n@reddit
I grew up drinking from those at my my grandmas house. When she passed I inherited them. I still use them to this day lead or other contaminants be damned.
Bigdaddybear519@reddit
The lead is on the outside of the glass (if this glass is one of the ones that do) so technically the milk is fine either way.
Necessary_Milk_5124@reddit
I wish I kept mine! I’m 45 too. I used to drink my morning orange juice in the one with Garfield in the hammock.
mkstot@reddit
The lead makes the chocolate milk even sweeter I’ll wager.
Tall_Cow2299@reddit
I have those mugs!!
Largewhitebutt@reddit
Oh fuck i had that cup and drank from it for years
