im going back to windows, this is a total dealbreaker
Posted by Shot_Duck_195@reddit | linux | View on Reddit | 49 comments
hello everyone, im currently using fedora 43 with KDE plasma + wayland
the moment i switched from windows to fedora, i noticed how dull and gray everything looked, i tried finding any information on if nvidia control panel (the screenshot you see attached to this post) on linux and....... apparently not
and so im stuck with the "nvidia settings" which lack most of the features youd see in the control panel which includes the colour settings
so now im stucked with these god awful washed out colours and apparently no one knows on how to fix this
and no my monitor doesnt have inbuilt settings + ive tried displaycal too but A: i dont have the calibration tool and B: IT WONT EVEN OPEN LIKE AT ALL
honestly if this is really the case then thats it
im switching to windows, im sorry but i just cant stand this
if anyone has a fix, i would appreciate it
+ on the screenshot, these were the settings i used on windows, it made windows look SO GOOD to my eyes, i loved it

Yeah Linux has a learning curve. Either give up and go back to windows or spend some time troubleshooting the problem and learn some things.
Shot_Duck_195@reddit (OP)
i mean its not like i havent tried
i have
and....... yeah nothing
i could find barely any information on this topic in the first place
i dont know what im supposed to do

Hey another piece of advise. Maybe try Ubuntu. That might work a lot better out of the box and get you more familiar with Linux. Personally I love debian and that's what I use on everything. Laptops, workstations, and server VMs. But it requires more configuring to get it all running they way you want. Ubuntu will just work and has really good documentation. Debian does as well but I'd recommend just starting with something that's user friendly and has good documentation. Good luck if you continue to pursue the Linux way. Sorry if my comments come off as harsh.
EnvironmentalCook520@reddit
You must not have very good googlefu. I think you're unable to find the correct terminology to search for the answer to your problem. From the other comments I would look into the HDR settings. IDC if you say that's not the problem. Just start there and verify that's not the problem instead of assuming it's not.
OsgoodSlaughters@reddit
Give up, you’re not built for it
emkoemko@reddit
or built for correct colors lol.... he is over saturating the crap out of his colors and then calls what colors should look more like crap ?
OsgoodSlaughters@reddit
That doesn’t help, but if you want some help… don’t throw a tantrum. (Some proofreading wouldn’t hurt either)
emkoemko@reddit
..... ok unc
ecthiender@reddit
This is ragebait. People, stop interacting with this post. If OP wanted genuine help, they would have asked nicely. They don't. They just want to farm karma with random ragebait.
Mods should delete or lock the post. These kinds of posts bring down the quality of discourse here.
Shot_Duck_195@reddit (OP)
dude
how am i farming karma
this post has a 2.7% karma to downvote ratio
its getting downvoted into oblivion
ecthiender@reddit
That's because everyone caught your bluff here. I was talking about your intent.
falkkiwiben@reddit
God people are being mean here. This sucks I hope you find a solution! My colours are also a bit worse on Linux but not enough for me to bother fixing thankfully
jermygod@reddit
coz
1) - rule 1.
2) he started with "im going back to windows".
people are not even mean tbf, like 2 guys said "ok buy"
Shot_Duck_195@reddit (OP)
i made this type of post because i know these type of posts get more attention
its also the reason why i made it in this subreddit
undrwater@reddit
Did it work? Everything good now?
dswhite85@reddit
Because OP is making a vanity post. "I'm leaving", they don't want support, they just want to vent and this post is a low effort post that is wasting peoples time, so people are being facetious about it and with the amount of posts like this, I can't say I really blame them.
falkkiwiben@reddit
Yeah true I agree, wrote my comment very quickly. I think I just read his thing and realised I have a bit of the same issue and then got mad at the bitter comments. I'll look up how to get my colours right without being vane about it
DoubleOwl7777@reddit
disable hdr. besides i am going back to windows in your title is kinda ragebait dont you think? you want help from a linux subreddit, but say i have given up right in your title. do you want help or no? no wonder people are kinda rude.
lateralspin@reddit
I usually simply download the correct ICC profile for my display and add the profile to the Color control panel.
Download ICC profile for Samsung Odyssey G3 created by rtings.com

KnowZeroX@reddit
Why aren't you using KDE's own display settings or set a different color profile?
No-Engineer3174@reddit
try to disable your monitor eco mode, when i switched to wayland and had this on my monitor kept changing colors while doing anything "colorfull"
EtiamTinciduntNullam@reddit
Your monitor surely has built-in settings, look for buttons/joystick on the bottom side or rear.
g3etwqb-uh8yaw07k@reddit
Have you tried the stock display control panel when using up to date KDE Plasma as your desktop? Not sure if it's actually a separate utility or part of the standard settings app, but those Plasma settings have better and more streamlined HDR options than when I last tried it on Win11.
edparadox@reddit
You have an HDR monitor that you do not master, and you do not get why it works the way it works...

emkoemko@reddit
what the heck? why would you need to make any of these changes.... looks good to you? it would look like puke to me
just to say this is not normal behavior and calibrating your monitor would still have the same issue because you are saturating the crap out of your colors
Shot_Duck_195@reddit (OP)
?????
whats wrong with having personal preferences
yeah i like a more contrasted and saturated display experience, i like it more colourful
Sosowski@reddit
Do you have HDR enabled? Just disable HDR. Windows looks all washed out with HDR enabled on desktop too.
g3etwqb-uh8yaw07k@reddit
Sry to "erm actually" you here, if you're content with just using the out of the box KDE desktop, it has very good hdr settings (work better than on windows imo). Personally didn't want to go through the effort of configuring it to look both good in games and for office stuff, but the colors were actually bot washed out. Can't tell how it is for NVIDIA though.
Shot_Duck_195@reddit (OP)
my monitor isnt a hdr monitor
its your typical VA lcd monitor
its a samsung odyssey g3
AbletonUser333@reddit
You don't even know what you have. The Odyssey G3 has HDR10. Linux looks washed out because you have HRD enabled. Don't listen to the moron up above who says things will look washed out with HRD enabled - it's the opposite. Figure out how to enable HDR on linux and it will look the way you want. It should be under System Settings > Display & Monitor and enable the HDR toggle. If not, you may have the incorrect driver installed.
Sosowski@reddit
That screen absolutely supports HDR. Disable HDR in the desktop display settings!
ThrowAway233223@reddit
You might get better help at a more support oriented subreddit like linux4noobs or linuxquestions.

Unless you've already tried this, under System Settings -> Display Configuration set your Color Profile to "Built-In" then crank the sRGB Intensity to 100%.
I think there are issues with gamma control that are being worked on, but set for a future version of KDE.
RavSte@reddit
Ok so first you’re saying you’re going back to Windows, and yet you ask people to help you solve the issue. Wonder why everyone’s rude huh
NemGoesGlobal@reddit
When you use the dropdown menu you can switch between single RGB Color channels Red, Green, Blue... use it.
Purple-Debt8214@reddit
Just go ChromeOS or get a Steam Machine when it comes out. Windows always suck.
Jack_Lantern2000@reddit
Wish I could help. But wow, I’m just stunned by this run-on sentence of a post.

Pretty much anywhere but here for this type of lame content...
Dom1252@reddit
that's normal, linux is not user friendly at all and the community sucks for the most part
but you can tinker with it too, it's just pain
ExulantBen@reddit
Try bazzite, I have never had that problem, even though I am also using Nvidia (its a gaming distribution, but it can absolutely be used as a regular non gaming one) it also has a lot better hardware support, and also is fedora kde
doxx-o-matic@reddit
Bye, Felicia. It's ok, Linux isn't for everyone.
arades@reddit
Have you tried the normal KDE display settings? You can tweak coloring there. You shouldn't ever need Nvidia settings, most of this stuff is better handled by the DE (KDE).
sudo_robyn@reddit
Can you not just do this in the monitor settings?
Hofnaerrchen@reddit
You won't be missed!
Furdiburd10@reddit
Did Linux just enabled HDR on your display device? That cause sdr content to lock washed out (which is "how it supposed to look" or something, I don't like it either)
Dist__@reddit
xrandr ?
ah wayland... nvm )
