It's been real, and it's been fun Windows, it just hasn't been real fun.. :)

I know, they still have about 90% desktop share but I mean, SteamOS, new Linux gaming distros, new steamy machines ya know, I think we could see a big dent in the marketshare. I posted something similar on PCMR and I got about 20% upvote, lol. I think I made some people mad, ha. Am I totally off my base and crazy? With all the tracking and the bloat, and issues of win, do yall not think change is in the wind? I understand the business side is something different. I just still want retribution from all the BSODs from back in the 90s.... I'll just say this, it's a good thing the monitors were heavy thick glass CRTs. They may have got knocked around a little bit lol.

I think that Linux can increase its market share up to 50% of its current measurement due to the situation of W11 and the next one, but even so, it is an issue of third-party support for the software and its compatibility is essential for the majority.

I was kinda thinking the same thing about the market share. and ya, one of the only reasons I keep win around is my expensive direct drive wheel only works with win, there is a linux proj in dev now, so fingers crossed ha. there are plenty of devs looking for work right now, we just need a "refactoring fund" or something lol.

I'd like to think "the year of linux desktop is just around the corner" but I don't know
Steam is definitely helping, they've done a lot of good things for the community and I'd imagine we'll see an uptick in linux use once they're out, but I wouldn't expect this to be a "big dent" and maybe something like 0.5%. I think they're becoming more of a replacement to consoles than PCs, so even though there will be more linux devices it won't be people ditching windows and instead will be people using both
The average user still doesn't really give a shit, their computer that came with windows does what they want it to do and that's about all the thought they give to it, in fact they probably give it no thought at all. The truly average user may not even think about what an operating system is, it's at a point that people think PC = windows, unless you say mac
Hell when it comes to gaming there is a whole damn industry where people pay others to debloat and optimize windows...

I may or may not have heard of or seen or downloaded some "tiny" versions of things, lol. I would have to agree about the average user. One of the things that made me start to think about this is when some older family members and such asked me about the ads in the start menu, and the screen recording of users that was in the news. and I was like ah, they are starting to push too far, lol. Ya you're probably right though it will be slow and minimal. I was thinking if steam os catches on with users and they desire that over windows like if they are given a choice and linux objectively better, safer, faster(fps) then it might be a thing like with the ps2 and dvds or something, how they drove the industry. I do like some of the distros that are coming out now. When I started using linux the driver situation was.. not fun. Much better now-a-days. I do still use both too, i had to install win11 for a job. Thats probably one of the reasons it will always be around because of the business contracts even if it lost 50% of desktop, those contracts(big healthcare and gov etc?) are still in place.

2026, year of the Linux desktop??
skivtjerry@reddit
If Windows dies, it will be by suicide. That actually seems possible in recent months.
mr_happy_nice@reddit (OP)
ya i heard something was going on with either the tech guys or the devs(rumours), besides all the missteps they've made with it
overflowingInt@reddit
Firefox on Linux can't even do Slack huddles. The desktop client can though. That was surprising to me.
mr_happy_nice@reddit (OP)
Don't know about that but I never thought I would hear "linux" come out some of my friends' mouths in reference to the issues with their pc, so that's something, even though I've been talking about it for 20 years... I think it takes someone else saying it. lol.
skivtjerry@reddit
Linux is far from perfect, but still heaps better than Windows or Mac.
mr_happy_nice@reddit (OP)
ya, I did this project and was trying to show someone on win through wsl and it is supposed to be fast but it was acting slower than a VM in wmware or something. I've had dual boot systems since late 90s but I think I'm gonna be switching to just straight linux on the drive and use VMs or proton or something for win apps. I think there is even like winboat or winsomething or run pretty much any win app, so not really a point to have it anymore.
skivtjerry@reddit
Yep. I have a Windows VM on my Linux laptops; that seems to work most smoothly if you're not a gamer.
mr_happy_nice@reddit (OP)
honestly I can't even really play a lot of games anymore because of the carpal tunnel crap, I tried a win 11 docker that was okay, and i've done VMs before. I am trying out pop os right now as base, because i have an amd card and it supports it out of the box, and I'm stuck in my old debian ways lol.

Take your meds man

:) what aspect of my post made you say that, tell me how exactly I am flawed.
