I Think She is ready for some big trips.

I have been building out my tundra for overlanding. I finally got the suspension done to handle a full load. I took it camping to test the sleeping situation and it was great. Took it off roading in the cascades and did a peak/ridge climb in the snow with moderately rough conditions. Truck wasfantastic with the 35 wildpeaks. I think she is ready for the deep bush! Time to pick a route. Thanks to all the people here who have answered the dumb questions I have had.

Love the topper. Sorry if you’ve answered already. Which brand is that? I have been looking at a color matched topper from Cap-It but the two tone and modular is slick. Looks like it fits well. How is it for weather sealing? Did you have to modify to get it fitted so well at the front and back?

RSI Smartcap defender. Gets a few drops inside in hard rain. Some dust on dirt road drives. They are custom fitted for lots of different trucks. The rack is a prinsu. I’m really happy with how it looks but the locks and minor leaks are disappointing.

What an incredible campsite.
shaune27@reddit
What tow hooks do you have?
Fun_Acanthopterygii1@reddit (OP)
They are moose knuckle split shackles. I wanted to do something a bit different than the crowd.
shaune27@reddit
Did you have to replace the OEM bumper to install them? If so which bumper did you go with?
Fun_Acanthopterygii1@reddit (OP)
Ya the oem bumper has no recovery points. I put in a Victory Blitz with warn winch and Baja S8 light bar.
shaune27@reddit
Preciate it bro
katrk824@reddit
How long does it take to set that up? Are you a multi day chiller or are you packing up to keep moving every day?
Fun_Acanthopterygii1@reddit (OP)
I can pack it up for both. For one nighters a lot of that shit either stays at home or is packed towards the front of the cap. I can whip the tent and sleeping stuff out and have it up in 30min. It’s a really good inflatable tent.
PonyThug@reddit
Good god that’s a long time for single night. If you dont mind then who cares what I say…
Fun_Acanthopterygii1@reddit (OP)
Ya it’s not great for one night unfortunately. What is the ideal setup time for a one nighter? Eve with a roof tent and bolt on awning I assume it’s 15-20 mins to get it all perfect. Is another 10-15 min really that bad?
PonyThug@reddit
I’m under 4 mins from parking, to my bed ready, awning out, beer cracked and stove heating a pan. And I have to unload the bed of my truck completely to pull out my mattress.
Fun_Acanthopterygii1@reddit (OP)
I want to do that next. Probably something similar to the decked system with a platform and two large drawers. Did you put your drawers on bearings?
PonyThug@reddit
Full custom build on 60” drawer slides. Decked is kinda ass tbh. If you have zero wood work skills I kinda get it tho. Even then I spent 1/5 a decked system for my full kitchen.
PonyThug@reddit
This is what my sub 4 mins set up looks like.
cb70overland@reddit
Looks good. I see it’s a Pro and that you upgraded the suspension a bit. Did it need anything else for the 35’s (body mount chip, fender liner trim/remolding, etc.)? I have a ‘23 TRD Off-road and am trying to figure out how big I can go without modifying anything or with only upgrading the suspension.
Fun_Acanthopterygii1@reddit (OP)
I had the Toyota factory 2.5 in lift and the 35s fit but they rubbed slightly when the wheel was turned all the way right or left. I changed out the springs and got another 1inch or so of lift now there is no rubbing at all. I looked into the wescott fender delete kit to fit 37s but saw it needed a bracket cut from the frame and painting of the frame so I am sticking with the 35s.
PonyThug@reddit
My buddy got some metric size that’s 36x13 to fit without all the extra shit you didn’t want to do
Fun_Acanthopterygii1@reddit (OP)
Maybe my next tire swap I will step it up to those. I do have quite a bit of clearance since swapping the springs. Wonder if the extra inch of diameter would be another drop in MPG.
PonyThug@reddit
Easily another full digit mpg drop
iin10ded@reddit
thats a lot of nights in the w. you must really like camping.
Fun_Acanthopterygii1@reddit (OP)
I don’t know what this means
PonyThug@reddit
With all your roof rack space I’d recommend grabbing a cheap roof basket for any future desert trips just for wood. Also you can use roof space temporarily (1-2 days) for lighter items inside a waterproof (dust proof) duffle if you need to pack more water for desert trips with those collapsible jugs.
Fun_Acanthopterygii1@reddit (OP)
I have one! Well not really a basket but a canvas wood holder that can be strapped down to the roof. I also have a second one of the big 128l cases with roof brackets but didn’t need the space for that trip. I have a 5 gallon jug and a 30gallon bladder for water. With my smaller containers I can pack out almost 45 gallons of if I depart with my shower full also.
RideWithYanu@reddit
Looks great. Nothing left to do except set off!
Fun_Acanthopterygii1@reddit (OP)
I can think of quite a few things I still want to do haha. The bed of the truck is still a giant cavern. Want to build a platform and some drawers. My truck budget has been expended for now though.
RideWithYanu@reddit
Just go mate. You’re gonna be fine!
Digital_Skyline@reddit
Man that thing looks great! What suspension changes did you make?
I have been really interested in getting a Tundra lately but am very nervous about the continued engine problem. Also, the sheer size of the vehicle. Have you had any issues going down trails?
Fun_Acanthopterygii1@reddit (OP)
Oh I forgot. It also needed new control arms. Went with JBAs.
Fun_Acanthopterygii1@reddit (OP)
It had pretty good Fox stock suspension with 2” factory lift. My issue was it didn’t do well with all the weight so I just swapped out all the springs for beefier ones. Went with dobinson cv59 in the back and eibach 2.5s in the front.
w0lfgeek@reddit
Awesome setup!!!! The pup is loving it for sure.
Fun_Acanthopterygii1@reddit (OP)
Ya I got lucky! He crushes 5 hour drives no problem.
theservman@reddit
Woofer is ready to go!

Sweet setup. Has a nice base camp feel to it.
