Hey, also another sprectrum pal, I’m not bothered either because Reddit has bigger problems LMAO BUT ALSO peepers doesn’t speak for all of us, no autistic person does
I always love it when someone tries to white knight a marginalized community, and then a member of said community comes along and tells them to fuck off 😂🤣
It sounds very similar to an old finance joke:
Two efficient market theorists are walking along the street. One of them says, "Wow, there's a $100 bill on the ground!" The other one says, "Don't be ridiculous. If there were, somebody would have picked it up by now."
Maybe he understands that changing lanes is one of the most dangerous things to do while driving and it doesn’t even save that much time (except for extreme circumstances)
He might just be a moron, Mythbusters even tested this and could confirm that constantly changing lanes to the seemingly faster one WILL get you to your destination faster.
It's kind of the opposite, no? People that change lanes a lot probably just want to do *something*, to claw back a sense of control. To not just brainlessly autopilot.
True. But if you behave as expected for the respective system _all_ people involved benefit. It's not the goal to squeeze out 4% of your journey at questionable cost.
That’s if you even notice it, zoning out at 65mph is super dangerous, so dangerous in fact they now design highways specifically to prevent people from doing it
Reddit is just being Reddit and taking zone out to a logical extreme. Everyone seems to think you’re fully lobotomizing and blinding yourself while you drive
But averaging 80 in a 65 will get you there 25% faster, changing lanes give you an extra 4%, for a total of 29% travel time savings and helps you keep the average without overly speeding to compensate for slowdowns. Speeding added to lane changing is where the real gains come in...
Might be worth it to someone with little to lose and who cares little about the safety of others... If I'm driving to south Carolina it's a 14hr drive, if I can shave off 4%, that's 33mins saved. And if I speed and average 80mph instead of the usual 60-65 average, I can shave about 3.5-4.5 hours off. So driving like a dick can turn my 14hr drive into potentially a 9 hour drive... Provided I don't get into an accident or get pulled over
Bro what you mean the risk of changing lanes? Left go fast right go slow simple as. You wait for left to be free and go, if there is risk in it for you maybe you shouldn’t be driving
>as long as everyone uses basic lane culture it works always
This is the problem. You need to account for other drivers. A lot of people here will just coast in the left lane, and that slows things down for everyone.
Yep. I’ve seen some videos of us highway traffic and honestly it looks like nobody gives a shit, so everyone is angry as a result. Also in eu trucks are obliged to go right lane only/ can only overtake under certain circumstances
Yep, weaving through traffic is risky and not worth it, but getting into the fast lane and using the passing lane to skip over slow moving vehicles is reasonable.
I mean are we talking heavy or light congestion? If you think it is considerably risky to change lanes during light traffic, you shouldn't be on the road.
When I was still in the office I was about 20 minutes away from the office. There was a stretch of road with a 60 limit I often tended to do 70, even overtaking cars on a single carriageway. Then one day I was wondering how time I gain by doing this:
If my average speed was 10mph higher than keeping to the speed limit for the whole journey, I gained 3 minutes.
I went back to the speed limit.
thats just speed. you didnt take into effect lane changing.
if water is dammed up, it slows the flow. if trickles along the side are opened up, flow increases.
not JUST for the water changing "lanes" but for all of the water as the pressure is reduced overall.
if people who change lanes stop doing so, then there is a compounding effect on traffic as everyone simply gazes into oblivion.
suddenly traffic becomes much less efficient
those people who change lanes are changing the flow for the better of EVERYONE
in other words, if they all stopped, EVERYONE's drive becomes longer by a lot more than 4%
I mean one could argue changing lanes makes you remain focused while just following the cars in front makes you zone out increasing risk as well, I would rather people drive more aggressively if that means they are focused on what they are doing.
you’re actually way more aware of your surroundings being an active driver, than passively staying in a lane and risk getting distracted by the monotony
True, and for a 10 minute drive that's negligible but for longer trips that can be worth something. Regardless of this don't be stupid and drive safe but it's worth noting
4% faster. You save a few minutes at best. You increase your chances of getting in an accident which will waste much more of your time even for a minor accident, not including possibility of injury which even if minor is more time wasted.
And even no accident, its still much more stressful.
its 4% for the drivers changing lanes but its also reduced for those who dont because some pressure has been relieved.
if all lane changers were to stop doing it completely, EVERYONE's drive time would increase, not just the lane changers.
Is there a source for this or you just made it up?
You can watch experiments on youtube how trafic forms. Its because one has to break for some reason(lets say because someone changed into his lane without) and then the guy behind him has and down the lane with each breaking time being longer. Changing lanes doesnt help trafic, from all the statistics i know it probably worsens it for everyone else.
Speak for yourself, I find it stressful to be in a lane where people aren't using cruise control. That and driving gets monotonous as fuck, changing lanes and maintaining 5 over keeps me engaged. It doesn't help that my commute would be the ideal use case for a rudimentary self driving system.
If you have a 1 hour commute, 4% will save you less than 2 minuites thirty seconds. If those 2 and a half minuite break you, you deserve to be broken. Leave the house a lil earlier.
Which over an hour long drive would save you 2 minutes and 24 seconds.
That's if you don't end up getting caught up at traffic at the other end of the journey.
This is like when I see someone speed past me the 5 minutes later im pulling up next to them again.
Even better on normal roads where the duche going 10mph over the speed limit still gets stuck at the stop light and saves no time
It's the law of averages. Going 10 mph over the speed limit might only get me through a red light I'd otherwise miss 10% of the time. But that 10% of the time saves me a lot. Maybe 80% of the time the light would be green either way so I just save a fraction of a second, and the other 10% it's red either way and I gain nothing.
But you don't need to win every time, so getting stuck 10% or whatever of the time is fine
This is like when I see someone speed past me the 5 minutes later im pulling up next to them again.
Even better on normal roads where the duche going 10mph over the speed limit still gets stuck at the stop light and saves no time
Idk about constantly changing lanes, but you can shave almost 10 minutes off your (city) commute, by having a general sense for how traffic moves in the intersections. Knowing to stay left as long as possible here and to stay right even though it seems slower initially there has made me not late for class at times when I absolutely should've been way later.
It's harder to test than testing constantly changing lanes to the faster one because it relies on you having an intersection on your route that has an exploit
I’ve driven hundreds of thousands of miles for work and have done plenty of long hauls. From my experience, the only time that speeding makes a meaningful difference is if you are driving for multiple hours straight, or speeding at a ridiculously dangerous pace.
Going 80 in the 65 on the freeway for your 20 minute commute might feel like you’re going fast, but realistically, you are shaving off a maximum of 2 minutes IF traffic is favorable. Going 90+ you will start shaving off a noticeable amount of time, but also, just don’t go that fast yall, the sum of your entire life is worth so much more than the potential 10 minutes you get home faster.
Other studies have showed that lane changing has a net negative effect on the traffic behind you though. Esp. in moderate to heavy traffic.
So from a self-serving perspective, maybe worth it. From a Nash equilibrium perspective, everyone maximizing time in their own lanes in medium-heavy traffic ultimately is best for everyone.
Anon's dad is a true economist confirmed.
Man that's not what nash equilibrium is.
Nash equilibrium doesn't care about what's the best final outcome for society. Nash equilibrium is, by definition, "it is not profitable for any participant to switch strategies". If everyone stays in their own lane, then it is profitable for me to exploit opportunities by switching lanes, hence that state is not a nash equilibrium. If everyone is switching lanes like madman, I won't profit from changing my strategy to sticking to one lane, therefore that would actually be the nash equilibrium in this hypothetical scenario.
Your point doesn't stand because you got the definition wrong. The definition of Nash equilibrium is pretty direct and explicit: if it's profitable for any individual to switch strategies, then it's not a Nash equilibrium. Nash equilibrium doesn't care about the greater good.
You know what is an example of Nash equilibrium? The OPs post. It's not profitable for him to switch strategies (to changing lanes). And if it's not profitable for everyone else also, that's it.
People wouldn't wear masks to save their grandma, why the fuck would they stay in their lane so everyone gets where they're going faster, when they can put themselves and everyone else at risk and cause tailbacks with sudden lane switching so they can get home 30 seconds earlier
They won't. The economic theory isn't saying they will, it's saying in an ideal situation that would be the best.
Ever seen the movie A Beautiful Mind? They explain the concept quite simply - a bunch of college bros are at a bar, and a hot piece of blonde walks in with her orbiters. Naturally, the horndogs all gravitate towards her, but then John Nash stops them.
He says, look guys if we all go for the skirt with legs, we'll all get rejected in turn. Then, her orbiters won't want anything to do with us, because no girl likes being the second choice. Thus, the only way for everyone to get laid is for all of us to avoid the queen bee.
So a less than ideal outcome for the individual, but a greater than likely outcome for the whole.
Australia did some motorist test during rush hour where one test subject drove the speed level and changed lanes a moderate amount and basically drove like a normal human being and the other test subject cut up aggressively and basically did everything he could to the predestined finish line as fast as possible. The two drivers arrived four minutes apart but the more “aggressive” driver burned like 80% more fuel, showing negligent gain and a higher monetary loss by driving recklessly.
Having learned this, I switched to a nocturnal schedule and just drive as fast as I want when no one else is on the road.
> Having learned this, I switched to a nocturnal schedule and just drive as fast as I want when no one else is on the road.
When you're unemployed you can just switch schedules like that?
It really depends on what the traffic is like. In heavy traffic there's you should usually stay where you are. But in moderate traffic, 2 or 3 slow people can jam up a wide freeway, leaving a big open space in front of them.
The market isn't large enough to be efficient. 2-3 drivers could easily be driving slowly because they have different preferences, not because they have already optimized speed.
There’s been a few studies on this actually, since moving people on highways tends to be a really important thing. The short answer is: very large. Have you seen that picture of some Chinese highway that’s just massive? It’d need to be a bit bigger than that, and at a specific capacity where traffic flows smoothly but without major gaps. Specific numbers vary, but a good middle range number would be about the width of 2 doorframes capable of fitting your mom
I meant literal economies. Although from the two Econ classes I took in undergrad, I understand that (behavioral) econ touches a little bit of every topic, so does what you said about highways generalize to other resource competitions?
TBF most American drivers speed ~5-10 mph. The readout from external speed displays pretty much always matches my car's speedometer and if I drive exactly the speed limit, I'm getting passed much more often than I'm passing others.
If you're driving at your desired travel speed, you won't be driving any faster even if the opportunity arises. This requires you to assume going faster is always the goal, but it isn't always as you can have engine problems, a weird payload for trucking purposes, low risk tolerance, or even just have a bunch of time and going faster doesn't optimize anything.
I’m the kinda guy where I have a few good miles before I need to make a turn, but I’ll just hang out in the closest lane to the eventual turn. None of that last-minute cutting across multiple lanes of traffic and I just don’t trust anyone to let me over when I’m trying to be prepared.
LOOK, CURVES AND GRAPHS AND EXCEL TABLES AND SHIT
IT IS LITERALLY THE BASIS OF TRUTH ~~if you ignore all the variables I've ignored to make my models look pretty~~
That's only assuming everyone else wants to go as fast as possible. People in the right lane don't always meet the speed limit, let alone surpass it, so that naturally debunks this reasoning.
> My lane is slow
> I change lanes
> My new lane is slow and my old lane is fast
> Can't change lanes because cars are moving fast and won't give me way
> My lane stops
> Stick out my neck to see the reason
> There is no reason, some car in front just decided to fuck with everyone else behind them
> My lane slowly starts moving again
> Traffic light goes red
> My lane stops
> Traffic light goes green
> Other lane starts moving quicker than mine
> Give up and just force myself onto it, receiving the warm honks and curses of the cars behind me
> My new lane is slow
Repeat until I either arrive at my destination or die trying
The problem is that changing lanes has the potential to increase traffic. If one person has an imperfect lane change and the car behind them has to break, then each driver’s reaction time will be add to traffic in the long line of cars. If there’s less traffic this likely won’t make a difference. But if there’s less cars are crawling, lane changes likely will make everything worse for everyone.
That kinda works, as long as everyone has the same goal of arriving as fast as possible. But most of the time my main focus is preserving as much fuel as possible. In practice that means driving below the speed limit a lot of the time.
My father doesn't want to build fences around the house so we can run away from bad guys, at this time we would have a lot of privacy in our home.
In my city bad guys don't attack civilians and if they do, it's by accident. The only time something like that happened was because my dad approached them wanting to defend us (we were safe inside the house but for some reason he thought he was a hero and went out).
Anon stole this from twitter (or twitter stole this from 4chan, take your pick): [https://x.com/bpodgursky/status/1988497219201220801](https://x.com/bpodgursky/status/1988497219201220801)
That's assuming that all that people care about is speed, or otherwise minimising travel time. If people also value other metrics, such as safety, this would not hold.
Maybe they're going to leave the highway at the next exit, that's why they're on the slower lane. I wanna go further, I'll change lane.
Or maybe I'm overthinking and anon's dad is a genius.
This is a very good joke. Anyone know any good economist jokes? After seeing this post I went to this https://www.cs.ccsu.edu/~pelletie/local/humor/economics/economist.html and they’re all pretty terrible
