What are everyone's opinion on the BBC facing a $1 billion legal action?

I think the BBC licence would increase if that really happened.

It’s academic now anyway. The litigation timeframe has expired. Just standby for lots of tedious bluster until a different Sony object catches his eye.

CuntyMcFartflaps@reddit

It's only expired in the UK. He can still sue in the US, where the footage was accessible via their website.
View on Reddit #70998926

Skavau@reddit

And how can he enforce payment?
View on Reddit #71005621

CuntyMcFartflaps@reddit

I mean, he's president of the United States, and a petty tyrant. I'm sure he could disrupt their overseas business significantly, which represents a large chunk of their funding.
View on Reddit #71036057

Skavau@reddit

He could do *indirect* things to disrupt their operations in the USA, and potentially threaten tariffs or something agaisnt ther UK - but ultimately he has limited options to actually force the BBC to pay him. Also, it's not clear that it was specifically accessible within Florida.

Drewski811@reddit

Never going to happen. He doesn't follow through with his threats and he can't control media that's not in his country this way. Just a PR thing.

Pretty happy with it. They lie through their teeth so should be fined for it and it’s always good to see mainstream media called out. They can increase TV licence too if they like, most people don’t pay it including me. If people choose to pay it then go ahead
View on Reddit #70998270

Narrow-Marionberry90@reddit

Lie through their teeth? Isn't he upset about their edit of his own speech?
View on Reddit #70998778

Wannabee_Mexicano@reddit

Well they doctored a video which made something look way worse than it was, so they lied and influenced people’s thinking. Why shouldn’t a major news outlet be fined for lying?
View on Reddit #70999194

Narrow-Marionberry90@reddit

This isn't convincing, can you describe the lie being told? It's using his direct words remember they've only changed the order in which they appear
View on Reddit #71009043

Wannabee_Mexicano@reddit

They chose words which were spaced about 45 minutes apart……
View on Reddit #71012492

Narrow-Marionberry90@reddit

Words or clips? Why aren't you giving any examples?
View on Reddit #71016224

FloydEGag@reddit

It was pretty bad *in reality* tbf. Ok he didn’t say those things in the order the edit had them, but he said them. He still maintains that election was stolen and has pardoned the people who were jailed for insurrection. Plenty of those people have since said they were doing it for him and because he encouraged them. He’s trying to wipe away inconvenient facts like the fact he encouraged a load of amped-up nationalist thugs to storm the Capitol and try to lynch his vice-president. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_the_January_6_United_States_Capitol_attack
View on Reddit #71004152

Have you been listening to the BBC? He didn’t say those things, that’s what he’s suing for

**BBC’s Misleading Edit in Panorama Documentary** The BBC has mishandled this matter, displaying poor professionalism and weak editorial standards. By manipulating video clips, the broadcaster produced a distorted and exaggerated impression of events. **What the BBC Did** In the Panorama documentary Trump: A Second Chance? (aired October 2024, shortly before the U.S. presidential election), producers spliced together two separate quotes from Donald Trump’s January 6, 2021 speech. These remarks were delivered nearly an hour apart and addressed unrelated topics. The edit made it appear as though Trump said he would walk with supporters to the Capitol and “fight like hell” in one continuous statement. This artificial combination created the impression of a direct call to violent action, which did not reflect how the speech unfolded in real time. **What Trump Actually Said** On January 6, 2021, Trump addressed supporters near the White House. His speech was bitter in tone and contributed to a threatening atmosphere that preceded the violence, serious enough in its own right. He did use the phrase “fight like hell,” but in the broader context he often framed it as fighting politically or rhetorically for the country’s future. He also explicitly told the crowd to “peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard.” **The Likely Impact** The BBC’s misleading edit risks obscuring these facts by exaggerating Trump’s words and making them appear more extreme than they were. This will damage the BBC’s credibility, and it is damage of its own making. Politically, the fallout may also distort public perception, suggesting Trump never said or did anything threatening. In reality, he did, but not in the more extreme way that Panorama tried to portray through their manipulation of the videos.

They could save that much and save a rainforest if they stopped sending out all the pointless threatening letters about their licensing fee that I ignore every couple of weeks.
View on Reddit #71003819

Great-Break357@reddit

He's not just stealing the U.S tax dollars, he's after the UK's too, I think he's cheeky for calling them out on bad editing which clearly shows his true intentions anyhow, this is just a smokescreen...release the files...
View on Reddit #71002143

Warr_Dogg@reddit

Watch them use this as an excuse to push the tv licence price up
View on Reddit #70998884

Wannabee_Mexicano@reddit

Oh no, whatever will they do when I don’t pay!
View on Reddit #70999329

Warr_Dogg@reddit

Just to show their commitment to waste reduction, you’ll get regular threatening letters to say they’ll send somebody with no powers of entry to your door for some gestapo like questioning. And it will have lots of red highlighted text just so you know it’s serious.

A random person can be sent to prison for a tweet, but a multinational news entity can seemingly get away with deliberate fake news. Someone needs to hold them to account.

I don't approve of the BBC being biased but then I don't understand why GB News get a completely free hand to be completely biased in favour of the right wing every day.
View on Reddit #71000341

OperationMission8254@reddit

Because GB News aren't a public service broadcaster.  Whereas the Beeb are, along with ITV, Channel 4, and Channel 5.

I thought that in the UK the court decides how significant the damage to reputation is and award accordingly. A UK court is unlikely to award $1b in damages.

He's suing in Florida for that very reason.
View on Reddit #70999089

Do they have jurisdiction? I don't know what assets the BBC have in the US.
View on Reddit #71000188

Loquis@reddit

Don't think they have, the panorama programme never aired in the states, and you can't watch IPlayer there either, so I think if he wants to sue, it'll have to be through the british courts
View on Reddit #71001342

Exciting_Top_9442@reddit

View on Reddit #70999781

Yes but they can doctor videos when it suits their agenda. I keep getting downvoted for saying mainstream media shouldn’t lie, it’s actually insane
View on Reddit #70999938

Ambitious_Mark9922@reddit

I wouldn’t worry about down votes Agree they shouldn’t edit but the hate being thrown about is crazy now. BBC verify being paid by the public should be fined for misinformation. Heads have fallen which is good

View on Reddit #70999967

I generally favour the BBC, but they are perceived as infallible and always unbiased, but too many times I've seen them being blatantly biased. I'm hoping this situation pushes them towards trying to be (realistically) less biased.

Everyone thinks the bbc is biased on the opposite direction of their own politics.
View on Reddit #70998829

Because they actually report the verifiable information neutrally, but everything everyone else consumes panders to their existing beliefs, so the BBC looks like it's biased against *you* by comparison
