Nice. You turned Apple Silicon into a Linux-on-ARM device. That's an improvement!

Never used desktop Ubuntu but Ubuntu server is awesome I fucking love it. Hope you have a good time with this distro!

My first several years of Linux were on desktop Ubuntu. It's overall "great", but I've moved onto other distros. For me, it's gotta be either Debian, Fedora or Arch.

My first several years of Linux were on Slackware. Then one year on Red Hat. Then 14 years on Debian. And now 11 years on Ubuntu. I want LTS, so Fedora and Arch are out. Ubuntu is the "distro of least hassles combined with full freedom of choice" for me.

I would honestly agree Ubuntu gets a lot of shit for being a “beginners” distro but you can customize and rice so much with it once yo switch out the de. It’s really a good balance of customization and just working imo

yeah, same for me with kubuntu. i prefer kde

My favorite DE has been Unity. I prefer KDE to GNOME, but generally just use the default. I hate nautilus (the GNOME file manager) and usually use/install Dolphin (although I guess I prefer gvfs to the KIO for some not-frequently-used virtual FS activities ...).

Yep If Ubuntu released the "CLI-ONLY" Edition, then It will be nice and gives "I am using Arch Linux-Like, I am pro" feel.

I mean Ubuntu server is basically Ubuntu cli if you go the headless route like I did. It’s also more lightweight than normal Ubuntu, you could totally slap a de ontop and call it a day. My only issue is it’s use of snaps

Did you install it bate metal mate?
gtensor@reddit (OP)
What do you mean by bare metal?

I used to use mate before I bought a new monitor, needed fractional scaling and moved to something else, is it available now so I can move back?
NeverEnPassant@reddit
I used mate for a LONG time. Every couple years I would try everything else and decide it was terrible, especially Gnome. I just got a 4k monitor and I needed fractional scaling as well. Mate does not support that. I went through this process again and I found that KDE plasma is really nice. I was able to configure it to behave pretty much excatly like mate. The only thing I miss is the system monitor applets on my task bar. I think I would stick with it even if I didnt need fractional scaling.
