The necessary means for, necessary means for..

Every time I rewatch The Big Lebowski, I’m struck by how much Philip Seymour Hoffman does with so little screen time. Brandt isn’t just a lackey — he’s a man who’s trying so hard to maintain order in a universe that runs on nonsense.
Watch him usher the Dude through the Lebowski mansion — his little nervous laughs, that frozen smile, the way he claps his hands when things go off the rails. He’s the only one in the film who seems to realize the absurdity of it all, but he’s too professionally trapped to say anything.
It’s pure Hoffman: control, repression, and awkward humanity leaking out at the edges. He’s a butler, a gatekeeper, a sycophant, and somehow, the most relatable guy in the room.
Every time he says “This is our concern, Dude”, I feel it on a spiritual level.
RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman. Even in a movie filled with legends, you stole your scenes with nothing but posture and politeness.

…which is given every…well not necessarily given every year, only when there’s a…worthy…uh…oh! That is the key to the city of Pasadena which Mr Lebowski received for his very…uh…civic…uh…
CriticalSuit1336@reddit
So racially, he's pretty cool?
DomineAppleTree@reddit
Oh! They’re not…hahaha…HAHAHA. They’re not literally his children, they’re children of promise but without the necessary means for a necessary means for a HIGHER education. Please, don’t touch that.
crentist_omfs@reddit
Yes yes that was when Mrs. Reagan was First Lady of the /nation/, not of California
Nth1021@reddit
Yes Yes

“Oh, Nancy’s pretty good.” “Oh! Wonderful woman; we were very happy to…”

DomineAppleTree@reddit
Ha nice thanks
michaltee@reddit
I got you. I’m a grammar and spelling Nazi.
But hey. At least it’s an ethos right?
DomineAppleTree@reddit
Me too! Pedant. Trying to not care so much and failing

Please don’t touch that, thank you.

Thank you.

Excuse me
Ozzie889@reddit
Ooooow (shrugs shoulders in disgust at how dirty the dude’s finger must be)
GiordanoBruno23@reddit
What in God's name are you blathering about?
DM_ur_buttcheeks@reddit
And proud we are of all of Brandt
901Soccer@reddit
I saw the movie. I know what happened. Yes, yes?
xxxKnightOwlxxx@reddit
I love how Brandt has this familiarality with The Dude yet is obviously from the opposite team. He's like the hall monitor in school, still a kid, but he reports to the adults. The best is when The Dude blows a lungful of weed smoke in Brandt's face and Brandt never flinches. He's like that old friend you used to have but who sold out to the system and belongs to the Man now.
Optimal_Tangerine_67@reddit
Absolutely bang on. I was never a fan until I started paying attention to him in the movie. When hes in the room while the Dude reads the ransom note, he just Absolutely nails it.
ComfortableMuscle444@reddit
He died, like so many young men of his generation, he died before his time. In your wisdom, Lord, you took him, as you took so many bright, flowering young men at Khe Sanh, at Langdok, at Hill 364!
Tight_Win_6945@reddit
Did Walter say this? Or is this some irrelevant random comment?
ComfortableMuscle444@reddit
Well Dude, we just don’t know.
saxbassoon@reddit
What the fuck does anything have to do with Vietnam?
curiousGorgio@reddit
Well there is a literal connection.
Professional_Sea1479@reddit
There isn’t ANY connection.
Longjumping-Today-43@reddit
Hey, fuck it man. Let’s go bowling.
avinaut@reddit
The Dude understands, too. Even after all the bullshit Brandt feeds him, once he sees the full picture, he only confronts the Big Lebowski. He never lashes out at Brandt.
skichip@reddit
He really ties the film together.
Unique_Rip_6202@reddit
Does he not.
skichip@reddit
Does He Not!
Sufficient-Ad-6900@reddit
And they peed on him!
pgh_donkey_punch@reddit
Only cause he paid $100 for it

Donny, please.

Excuse me
sublimeonskunk@reddit
Go back and watch the scene of Brandt explaining the big Lebowskis various civic achievements. Legend. RIP…

Unfortunately there was no time for a photo opportunity
ZombieLebowski@reddit
Was that when she was first lady of California?
ZombieLebowski@reddit
The way he gers physically uncomfortable when the dude repeatedly touches the business achievers award (the shoe)

And very proud we are of him.

hornwalker@reddit
What does everyone think- was the double “necessary means for” a mistake they just left in, or intentional ?
Key_Country3756@reddit
That delivery was absolutely intended by PSH. My only question is whether it was written that way by the Coen brothers.
hornwalker@reddit
Its not in the script!
edmechem@reddit
It is in the version I downloaded from a link here in this sub a while ago.
Separate incidents!
The compromised second draft.
etc.
score_@reddit
I think he knows he's bullshitting, and that it doesn't really matter enough to lie convincingly, so he's just padding time with somewhat professional sounding language until he can move on to something else.
banjois@reddit
Dude
ManiBeingMani@reddit
I think he's saying they don't have the necessary means for the necessary means for a higher education. So if the "necessary means" for higher ed are money & a good education, they don't have the necessary means to achieve that for example a community or social construct that allows their family to provide a stable income. At least that's how I've always interpreted it. Lotta ins and outs
hornwalker@reddit
ManiBeingMani@reddit
It’s a weekday?
X57471C@reddit
Brandt seems like the kind of guy to practice his delivery in the mirror so these little tours are perfect, but Dude kinda threw him off program by jumping around so much. Messed up the delivery and his brain just sorta short-circuited and had to start over.
SmoovyJ@reddit
Philip Seymour Hoffman has leaking out at the edges, but you sure don't
Mucupka@reddit
That fuckin goldbricker, this whole goddamn thing!
Scantland_truth_@reddit
what the fuck you talking about?

scaledatom@reddit
It's wild that this was his only ever role in any Coens movie, and it is small and pitch perfect
Gnarly-Gnu@reddit
Brandt is great, but I appreciate his Lester Bangs in Almost Famous or Phil Parma in Magnolia.
lola_dubois18@reddit
Scotty in Boogie Nights. You feel the character’s pain.
Gnarly-Gnu@reddit
Another great role.
ZealousidealLack299@reddit

That's marvellous.

We are all very fond of her.
WhatIsTheAmplitude@reddit
Looking back on things, I would let Brandt watch for free.
MalteseCorto@reddit
A good man. And thorough.
th3on3@reddit
The way he repeats the “necessary means’ line is such perfect delivery. 100% agree with your post, he’s so good in it
Clear_Marsupial808@reddit
Brant doesn’t even finish his statements about each achievement. Also, I think Nancy took BL’s legs at Bohemian Grove ritual. Brant watched though….
emmmmceeee@reddit
Wonderful man. We’re all very fond of him.

withoutpeer@reddit
It's his small physical quirks and flourishes that really sells it for me. Like when he opens the study doors with such dedication while no one else even notices his efforts but that doesn't stop him at all.
peanut_butter_zen@reddit
When he opens the doors for the Dude to visit the Big Lebowski 'in seclusion in the west wing' 🤣
hotsliceofjesus@reddit
You told Brandt on the phone. He told me.
