Farting in public restrooms. Is it appropriate?

So I had a weird situation arise at a restaurant in the bathroom 2 stalls and 2 urinals. I'm (40M) in there and at the urinal and I had to fart, so I did. The guy standing at the next urinal said to me "this is not the place for that" I looked at him side and did it again and continued doing the normal things in the bathroom do. But im wondering if anyone else has experienced this or if you agree that a public restroom is not the place to rip one? If it's not, then where the hell is when you're out and about?
