I just wanted to search for some lyrics dammit, but Google knows better, because of course they do! AI search- whatever you think about it is meh, but for god's sake, if it refuses, just don't show me anything, instead of this patronizing bullshit. Google ai is good, just not for this. And plus this is probably running on their much more economical 2.0-2.5 flash model, if not even Gemma.

Even if it's a 4B model, think about the scale, it's not just active users, it's automated queries, billions per day. Sure, Google AI got nice features, but in general I think it's meh, it's not there yet, but stuff like this, a refusal in the search, is just plain annoying (not even talking about the fact that the first search results for years been ads, instead of what you're actually looking for).

Oh I agree. Another thing you have to get is that copyright is a bitch, and Google doesn’t really want to get fucked over for their ai generating a response of lyrics. But overall Google can withstand the scale because, well, it’s Google. They make a shit ton of money, and I’m sure they get good deals on power usage and gpu purchasing

Ye, they get the sweetest of deals, for sure. But it is still both a waste + annoying. Thing is, they could've just do something like "If users query is either X or Y don't use AI search, and return normal search results instead." But they opted to annoy users, while burning electricity (CO2, etc...)
