I'm working more out of choice and to fund a travel budget that has recently ballooned far beyond what we planned. I'm in an Amazon warehouse, and funny enough, I like it quite a bit. The work kinda sucks, but it's easy and flexible and there are some really cool people I get to BS with throughout the day. I have a great time, most of the time. Best of all, it keeps me from bothering my wife all day and funds 2-3 trips a year we've started taking.

On the cusp of retirement. All my retired friends are setting up bullshit LLC’s to do “consulting” work. I’m looking for a shift or two a week at a local pub as a bartender. Best job I ever had.

I'm like one of your retired friends and I've been doing a bit of consulting and I'm finding it's terrible.  I might have one call in a day, which screws up my schedule, for an amount of money that's too small to care about.  There are also a lot of calls and other overhead that are annoying and don't pay anything.  And if I have one paid call and it's cancelled or moved, which happens half the time, my day is screwed up for nothing.

If I could do it all again, I’d be a college professor. I’ve always loved tutoring and teaching (I got to be a TA during grad school). I still hold out hope that I’ll find a way to tutor or teach, either as a volunteer or post retirement.

I have a master’s in a math heavy program and I have definitely considered teaching a couple of math classes at a community college. I’m a very young X-er…like the youngest Xer possible…so I still have teens at home. But if they didn’t need me as much, I would consider teaching some classes.
View on Reddit #71017694

Nojopar@reddit

Speaking as a college professor, you're probably better off not being that. They're super hard jobs to land, you have to go to school for way longer than anyone expects, your earnings are usually lower compared to what you can get without bothering, you get next to no raises and usually only 2 possible promotions in your entire career (assistant professor to associate professor then associate to full professor), office politics gets ratcheted up to 12 with cliques and infighting the norm, everyone you know thinks you get way overpaid, you've got to publish or perish which means you'll spend whole years basically not engaging with family or friends because you're obsessively chasing research grants, and our ever increasing reliance on tuition dollars to keep the lights on mean that you'll have to constantly lower your teaching standards to keep students around.
View on Reddit #70903842

lean_in_buttercup@reddit

This is why I want to go back to adjunct. Just one or two classes. The pay is atrocious which is why I quit but I did it for five years and really loved it. Bonus of the adjunct role. No crappy dept meetings and Life experience counts along w my masters so don’t need a PhD!

I retired from public sector work at age 40 with a modest pension and moved to a rural property. I do dog training for clients. I get to work from home with animals (8 year old me would definitely approve). It has its ups and downs and I’m basically homebound most of the time but I love it. My main focus is a board and train model where I take a dog for 3 weeks of obedience training and then work with the owner to show them how to practice and maintain the dogs routine for a better relationship. I also board dogs for existing clients. Between the pension and income from dog training my wife and I get to be self employed and enjoy the perks of living rural without having to commute to a job.

Actually, I gave up my career job two years ago at 50 and became a school custodian. It's a union job in my state with decent pay and amazing health care. I also get a lot of time off. Additionally, because of the nature of the job I don't have to talk to people so I spend most of my shift listening to audiobooks. I would try it with an experienced guide because some folks find relief from anxiety from it. I've got a lot of weird stuff in my brain. I would not do anything stronger than cannabis recreationally though. Hard no on drug use overall. I missed out on cocaine too, and having double digit number of sex partners. No need to recreate that toxic mess. I just want to go to concerts and dance freely, wear fun clothes (for most of my adult life we were in a religious extremism community and my girls and I dressed weird, not fun weird, more like Duggar family weird), surprise my husband by adding more piercings/tattoos when he's not expecting it, cuss about anything that needs to be cussed about, go to college, finally take care of my body, maybe make some friends who like me for me and not for my shared religious affiliation. That's what I want from my 20s that I completely skipped over. I went from teen to middle aged woman with nothing real in between.

I just wanted to work the cash register and stock some shelves, not help run the joint. I searched for 6 months and then gave up and decided to go to college instead. My kids seem to find this whole thing bad ass. And my husband keeps referring to it as "hot AF" but then he says that if I wear leggings, or put lotion on, so who knows what he's even talking about. He thinks everything is hot AF. He told me not to run off with a hot professor. I doubt our little community college has a lot of hot professors looking to score with someones grandma. 😉 I'm grateful for my family's and therapist's support. I'm so scared.

While I wasn't 60 (I was 40), I went to college as an English major. It's what is always wanted to do. I went to University's of Tulsa for my bachelor's and read 27 novels in one class in my first semester. I was there for 6 semesters. I graduated in December of 2010 and haven't been able to read even one book since I graduated. 😕 I have tried, but it's like my brain broke. Maybe someday. What I really wanted to say is that I'd bet you do make it. And you'll do better than you would have back when you were young. You have more patience now, more experience in life, and you want it. One said to the other, "There goes the curve." A sneaky smile came over me as I thought "Damn straight." I loved going back. I also think people shouldn't even be allowed to go to college before they're 25 or so. Younger people just don't appreciate what a privilege and opportunity it is. I went back to school in my late 30s. Having actual life experiences made the experience so much different than when I was 18-19. Just having an overall knowledge of how the world works made understanding certain concepts much easier. Critical thinking skills were definitely better! I almost preach about going back to school. Genuinely curious.... What are you afraid of?
View on Reddit #70922637

Rambling-Holiday1998@reddit

Failure and humiliation are my two top fears, as identified with the help of my therapist. What I've done to mitigate this is to keep my circle small and tight. That means my husband and kids know, but my judgey sister-in-law will never know I took the first class until I'm getting my degree. If I flunk out it's a secret within my own nuclear family only. But also, I want to succeed and I've lived in fear since I was 18. Pushing myself this much has taken a LOT of personal healing and growth. Pushing through fear is good for us, but it's also healthy to say the fear out loud. People who do everything fearlessly are awesome but unrelatable to me. Name the fear and then defeat it.
View on Reddit #70923774

spatchcoq@reddit

Best of luck to you. I try to learn something every year, no matter how mundane, just to keep young. I do it for myself and often no one knows but me. Except my wife, who notices that I'm into something new and supports and encourages me. Sounds like your spouse is similar to mine this way. Someone once told me that Fear is how you know it matters/you care about it. Since then, it's been easier for me to accept fear and use it to help me focus. Even to give myself permission to care and not just be nonchalant, "oh it doesn't matter". In some ways, it doesn't matter because there are no downsides to trying and failing. In one a very important way it does matter, and that's that it matters _to you_. And you are allowed to care and put yourself first. And sometimes that's all that matters. All the best with it.

Substitute teaching is all the best parts of regular teaching (my current job). You get to hang out with the kids and teach them stuff, without any of the paperwork or data or parent meetings or lesson plans or all the other assorted bullshit. And you can take a day off whenever you feel like it, and if a class is horrible you're only stuck with them for a day, not a year, and you never have to go back.

That’s kind of where I’m leaning. My issue is I’ve always worked outside. My career has been in telecomm as a lineman, repairman, splicer, etc… very physical work and also a lot of dealing with the public. I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis earlier this year and don’t know how much longer my body can hold out. (Currently off work with my third knee surgery). I’d like to retire this coming year, but financially speaking, I’ll need to find something else to do. Park maintenance or something like that sounds nice.

Retail is the same no matter the store. Customers are awful in every setting. When I was young, Target opened in my small city. I was so excited and I decided to get a part time job there for the discount. The worst night was when I had folded all the towels and straightened the entire isle just before close and a woman in her 40's came into the isle and put her arm on the shelf. She walked down the isle never taking her arm off the shelf sending all the towels onto the floor. I couldn't leave until they were all refolded. That was my last retail job ever.

I left my full-time job in 2021 at age 53. I had already had a side-hustle of vintage reselling on the weekends, so now I do that more regularly. (Fulltime isn't quite accurate, but it is my main job.) I love it. I love sourcing new items, and researching their history and value, and setting up displays and stock in my booths, and I have even grown to not loathe the paperwork. Now I am aiming at cleaning out my basement of all the excess inventory I let pile up when I was working and just starting out. I don't want to leave that for my nephew to deal with in 20+ years when I am gone. My FIL worked a dull desk job for 40 years at the electric company. When he retired, he said to his wife, "You know, I have always wanted to work in a department store selling men's accessories." So he got a part-time job at the fanciest mall in their area, at the fanciest department store. He loved it. He loved talking to people and helping them find the right belt and tie. He worked there so long he got a second pension from them plus a lifetime discount for his family long after he had passed. He made me realize there is always room for a second act to do something you enjoy.

I'm imagining a young dude who has a freshly minted degree in conservation or forestry or geology or whatever degree they have. He's driving in his old-school Jeep toward a brand new life. He has a black labrador in the passenger seat next to him. You and the dog are both young and full of life. You know that you'll never get rich doing this work, but you are wealthy in all the ways that really matter. Maybe you meet a girl during your first few months there. We have "grounds crew" folks that drive around our three big office campuses and empty the outdoor trash bins, plant flowers, change out signage, do landscaping, minor outdoor maintenance things. Almost all are retirees from other departments. If for some reason I need to keep working past 55, that's what I plan to do - two or three days a week would be enough to keep me happy.

The truth is that if you do a good job, you very rarely hear things. And if you follow that up with confidence when you do, you can stop any bad interactions from starting. I did travel and rec ball for 2 years before I moved up to college. And once I moved up to college, I was doing good high schools so very rarely have to deal with parents. I just did some college wrestling this weekend and walked away with almost 1400. And it was really fun. And I did some high school basketball on Thursday and Friday. Its really fun especially if you played sports growing up. Fwiw, I have never done little league. Those umpires are supposed to be volunteers.

Are you "privileged"? Or did you live below your means and invest like a mad person hoping and praying for a downfall in the market so you could buy even more stock "on sale"? And then take a second job to help cover cracks all the while missing your kids grow up because you were just trying to pay the bills and save for down the road? Then when you chose on your terms to check out of the rat race you were able to because you didn't live the "keep up with the Jones'" life style. I ask because That's exactly what I did. Born and brought up very poor. Got a decent job. Saved and invested and did without. Tapped out at 56. Me? Privileged? Absolutely not. Maybe you are. But people like to throw shit on others who have made their own way, because they didn't have the intestinal fortitude to plan for down the road. Live now! Spend all you can because tomorrow you may die. Decent philosophy until you hit 65 and you're living day to day hoping you can pay your bills. I don't feel sorry for anyone who had the chance to prepare and CHOSE not to.

This reads as super defensive. Being "privileged" doesn't mean you didn't work hard and play life wisely and then reap the rewards. It just means you have advantages others don't. That's the fun of retirement! Over the years I have done several jobs. All were easy. The one most can relate to - we sailed, so I worked part time at West Marine. I stocked electronics, because the other clerks hated it. I happen to like resisters, fuses, etc. I also stocked/arranged shoes. I could sit on the floor and stack the shoes. The employee discount was a huge help with boat expenses. I worked there until I could not walk on the concrete floors anymore. Take a job, get bored, or decide it's not fun. Quit. I am way past career building. My career was in IT. I was a most senior technical person supporting computer hardware and tech lead for 2 huge server farm installations. Lived through ISO9000 craze, supported really smart advanced engineering. Made more as a tech than most managers. In retirement I have been a training coordinator, travel coordinator, FSO, HR in a private bank (hated that one), direct TV customer service (fun job, bad environment), genealogist for pay, farrier (specialized in dressage and race horses), video creator for a large nonprofit (love it -6 done, 1 pending), maintenance support for a large refuge, procedure documentation facilitator, retail manager of a volunteer organization, etc. it's fun to go in, help an organization, then leave.

He makes enough income for us and we have an apt bldg I need to manage (the bldg is in Spain and is part of my parents retirement and since I'm the native speaker I handle communications with regulatory agencies and such). I also have hobbies. My previous work hours are divided into managing the property, teaching English as a second language, and herbology.

Ex executive chef. Don't have to work, but do to help stay busy. Took a job 3 days a week in an assisted living center, I get menus but not recipes. I get to play and the residents get good food. When I talk to them they love the difference in the meals, soups and desserts they get.

I will retire early soon ish. The plan is to make 1 to 2k a month to limit my drawdown on my income portfolio and let it and my 401k grow. I plan to do odd jobs like handyman stuff including painting, pressure washing, delivery jobs, small electrical jobs, etc. Hire a husband stuff. I also plan to write software for fun and maybe do some consulting. But really want to stay active and do work outside and with my hands.

I LOVE all of these ideas! I just retired in my 50’s but want to keep working somewhere that isn’t so demanding and soul-crushing. There’s a nice Ace Hardware near me that I’d like to try. I’ve also thought about being an elementary school custodian. Being a host at a local restaurant. Working at an ice cream shop. My dream job would be to become a voice actor or read audio books. Just about anywhere that allows me to interact with regular people to make their days better.

I never did the career thing and have like 2k stashed. I currently deliver pizza at 55yo, and absolutely love it. I have a great reputation around town and get tipped well. It's enough to live in this small town with a little extra towards my next venture.. a taco truck. I have the truck and most equipment. I'm piecing it together, so there will be no lingering debt to service, and I can bring the joy of tacos to this area. Hopefully it's successful enough to stash a little more away, but I figure I hire a prep cook, and my son and I can manage service until I get too old to do so.

But, once I get really sick of the company I work for now, I'd like to get to work on tax returns in tax season, maybe transition to teaching high school and college aged kids about managing money in the day to day. Hopefully show them that having the latest and greatest whatever popular thing isn't so wonderful if you're paying half of your salary to credit card companies.

I genuinely appreciate that so many people feel the need to have something to do or desire work to find meaning or purpose but me? Nope. Not in the slightest. I don't want to work at all ever again. There is no job I enjoy. Not once for the remainder of my life do I want to be compelled to perform a function at the behest of another in the pursuit of anyone's enrichment, including my own. I'm just...done. I'm over it. I gave up two-thirds of my life to the rat race already, I'd like the rest to be mine.

I don't like the work any more than before, but I'm clearing way more now than I did before retirement. I certainly don't get anxious every Sunday after dinner.

My husband was not a lawyer but did have a career with US Court and that anxiety on Sunday night was real. He had to retire at 57 (they about had to carry him out of his office and leave him on the curb and call me to come pick him up, he wanted to stay so badly) . He found work as a civilian domestic abuse investigator and case manager for the local PD for about 15 hours a week. It was perfect until he was 62 and could get his SS. Then we sold everything and ran away in a motorhome..

I got a job working in a copy shop a few years ago. I really love the problem solving aspect of it. People come in with a few elements, papers or digital files or both, and they say, "I need 10 of these, they have to be exactly 5.5" tall, and I need to put my email address on the back." Then it's my job to turn that into a physical product. I love it. I also love just doing normal graphic design. It's just super fun no matter how you slice it. That being said, working in a copy shop in general is pretty soul crushing. Customers are the worst and of course our copy shop does shipping. Shipping for retail customers is literally hell on earth. So I'm only working 1 day a week right now, when I get closer to retiring I hope to work a few more hours, but hopefully with zero counter time where the crazies are.

I'm hoping I'll be able to ferry airplanes or fly for a jump school a couple days a week. I got my pilots cert a few years ago, but know once I retire, I won't be able to afford to fly anymore unless someone else is paying. I don't want to teach, so CFI is off the table. If that isn't realistic, probably Lowes or Home Depot for me. Something mindless but takes up time.
