Is it common for the public to comment on your appearance in customer service?

I was just wondering about this and I should preface this by saying I'm a young woman. When I worked in retail, I was on the tills a lot of the time. I got quite a lot of comments on my appearance, more than any other time in my life. The comments were all positive (?) I guess
They would range from anywhere to 'you look to young to be working here??' Which then went onto discussion of my age. It would also be women complimenting my makeup if I chose to wore any that day. Most of the comments were from older men tho which was creepy
I'm just wondering though - is this a common experience for those that worked in customer service roles??
