ULPT: When getting a license plate, get one with zeros
Posted by Calm_Comfortable4654@reddit | UnethicalLifeProTips | View on Reddit | 229 comments
Zeros and O's look exactly alike. Half the time when I get a ticket it gets logged with an O instead of a zero and I don't have to pay it.
silencethethoughts@reddit
Get one with multiple E and F , then get a plate cover that slightly comes up and covers the bottom
GreenElandGod@reddit
My license plate says “YER MAMA”
Guess what? If you don’t intend on hitting and running, or driving like a lunatic and fleeing the cops, literally nothing happens to you.

Technically right.
But the concrete chance is 1/(2^n) with n being the number of zeros in your license plate
Examples:
With 1 zero your chance is 1/2 because of the two possible combinations to read the plate
With 2 zeros your chance is already down to 1/4 due to the 4 possible combinations (00, o0, 0o, oo)
soyelmocano@reddit
Which is why I said less than half. We would have no idea how many 0/O combinations there were, with each additional one increasing the uncertainty.
nosniboD@reddit
I would say it stays the same. People aren’t seeing two zeros and think only 1 of them is a 0 and 1 is an O
Dossi96@reddit
Humans probably not but automatic license plate readers that perform character recognition based on probabilities do because they don't compare the letters in the picture to one another but rather look at each detected letter individually and compare it to the training data.
Therefore a plate consisting of only zeros can come out as every combination of zeros and o's.
SmuckatelliCupcakeNE@reddit
No, because he still got ALL the tickets whether written correctly or not with a 0 or O. He just found the loophole to have some dismissed when he went to court.

Depends on the state or province you are getting them from. Personalized plates in Ontario 0 and O and 1 and I are the same.
B00K and BOOK would both show the same owner.
For regular issue plates they don’t use the letter O next to the numbers.
AMNO 123 would never be issued.
zEdgarHoover@reddit
Same here in Virginia.
GenosT@reddit
No O's here in Alberta either, just 0's
crash866@reddit
Ontario does not use I G O Q U in regular plates also.

Same in Texas. 0 and O are considered the same. Had fun with that when my plate was read at a toll with the O as 0. The toll tag people sent us a bill because the plate with 0 wasn't registered with them. The state gave them the correct billing info, of course.

Key-Candle8141@reddit
The problem is they wont let you get:
And just normal plates have patterns so even if you just happened to get:
The police would still know it goes: letter number letter space letter number letter
So maybe you could get a vanity plate that has some confusing combo but you'd have to get it passed a DMV clerk 😄
Justgoing2112@reddit
In AZ, assigned plates don't have O's. Only zeros. Personalized plates could have the O's. O or 0 can easily be verified when the license plate check is conducted.
Also, most citations also include vin #'s. There are no O's in vin #'s. Only zeros.
MinnesnowdaDad@reddit
So when police pull you over, they usually run the plate to see if you have any warrants, and confirm that the plate number matches the make and model of vehicle. This would not work for traffic tickets. Cops don’t just write down the age and assume everything’s good, they have a computer system in their squad to verify you and your car are who you say you are. False info.
EvilDarkCow@reddit

Wixely@reddit

ospreyintokyo@reddit
What does this mean?
ahfodder@reddit
They are referring to an SQL injection attack where you write a command inside value of a string (text) that deletes a table in the database. It would be something like '123'); drop table plates;'.
When the program is going to write a new row into the 'plates' table in the database it sees 123 as the plate number then the semicolon means do a new command - one which means delete the whole table.
Obligatory xkcd
There are many ways to prevent this kind of thing these days. Also the fact that you need a 20-character plate haha.

If a computer stores data in a certain kind of table, there usually exists a command which you can insert instead of said data to force the computer to delete this table. In a hypothetical situation, if you write said command on your number plate, the camera will scan it, read it, put it into the table and delete all records of all people who have ever got a speeding ticket
ospreyintokyo@reddit
Wow that would be hilarious if it could work. Pretty neat idea!
iGhostEdd@reddit

ahandmadegrin@reddit
Look up the SQL command to delete a table.
What's a table? It's a way to store and organize data in a database where each row is a record and each column is an attribute. A table of students might have columns for name, address, classes, grades, etc.
What's SQL? Structured Query Language. It's a way to talk to a database to get information and move stuff around.
OK, after all that, look up a SQL injection. That's an attack where you enter SQL in places you shouldn't be able to and get it to run. Think the username field on a login screen.
If it's coded right, it will just accept usernames. If it's not, it's possible to enter SQL code and have it run on the database. That's what the xkcd cartoon is referencing, and what the comment about the drop tables on the bumper is referencing.

License plates don’t use the letter O
PowerPickle13@reddit
That’s not how it works. Zeros are also narrower than O’s. See: O and 0 are different. Tickets aren’t attached to your plate or car, they are attached to the operators license. What a silly thing to post.
narcolepticdoc@reddit
They’re talking about ticket automated tickets from cameras. They’re hoping that they won’t be able to tell what the plate is and they’ll misfile the ticket.
PowerPickle13@reddit
0 and O are pretty distinct tho.
QueenMEB120@reddit
Not in Florida. I keep getting someone else's toll notices. The only difference in our plates are an O and a 0.
PowerPickle13@reddit
Florida doesn’t use O for standard plates, only 0 so that sounds… untrue unless they have a vanity plate with an O that’s EXACTLY the same as your standard plate. Plate T0MMY and plate TOMMY would register the same and couldn’t coexist according to Florida documentation about plates.
QueenMEB120@reddit
We're not from Florida. But, that would explain why we keep getting their toll notices. We have the 0 and they have the O.
PowerPickle13@reddit
Wait you’re getting toll notices from another states plates!?
QueenMEB120@reddit
No, both plates are from the same state. We're not from Florida but they go there occasionally.
PowerPickle13@reddit
Ah that makes sense. Your info is probably just first in the system. How fun. It could explain others not getting a ticket too.
NotYourReddit18@reddit
It's more likely that because Florida doesn't use O for their license plates their OCR software identifies both O and 0 as 0 as accounting for the license plate rules of other states wasn't part of the requirements due to budget constraints.
PowerPickle13@reddit
That had already been addressed in the conversation thread thanks
QueenMEB120@reddit
We've never been to Florida so it's reading the plate wrong and then getting the wrong info from the DMV. It's just annoying to have to send an appeal every time.
PowerPickle13@reddit
One comment up you said you go there occasionally….. wtf.
EvilDarkCow@reddit
Back when my state had embossed plates and used the letter O, they used the exact same stamp for O and 0.
PowerPickle13@reddit
If they were the same then the DMV was only issuing plates with one or the other. Some states don’t use 0 or O at all. In my state O and 0 were used interchangeably without distinction and wouldn’t make a difference to a speed camera. The owner of the vehicle would get a ticket unless they proved they weren’t the driver.
EvilDarkCow@reddit
The registration paperwork showed an O and 0, but they were identical on the plate. Nowadays, though, the letters I, O, and Q are skipped in Kansas. And with the switch to flat plates, letters and numbers are now in different fonts, so an O is more rectangular. Not that it matters though, you can only get an O on a personalized plate, and zeros never have been allowed on personalized tags.
MandomRix@reddit
I know OP is usually full of shit but "half the time when I get a ticket" makes it sound like a junior high kid making up stories.
Parasitisch@reddit
In some states, there isn’t a difference. They’ll use Os or 0s as a replacement for the other.
As a related note, in some states, they don’t issue normal plates with certain letters. Mine is I, O, Q, or U because they look like other letters/numbers. So, the only way you get these are through custom plates.
computerfreund03@reddit
In Germany, we have a "forgery-impeding font" for the number plates, so you can't confuse O with 0 for example.
Apprehensive_Hat8986@reddit
Er... 🤓 that's a type-face. But yeah, we all know what you mean. 😅
nousernameisleftt@reddit
That's a good font
BigBlueMountainStar@reddit
This is why some countries don’t allow certain letters, and why you can’t always choose free text for your registration.
But also, most countries have a set format to the layout of the plates, so they can’t be confused as a O in the letter place (L) clearly can’t be a 0.
Eg in France it’s LL NNN LL.
also, in France, SS is not allowed in the letter place, due to WW2 Nazi references.
JDSaphir@reddit
Well nothing can be confused as an O in France because I, O and U are not allowed even in letter spaces.
tgr31@reddit
How could you possibly know if you arent getting a ticket for something
X420ninjas@reddit
Depends the state... Some states put a / through a zero but not an o
Beer-Milkshakes@reddit
Lol. In America. In Europe O isnt a visble licence digital but Zero is. Same for I and One.
NotYourReddit18@reddit
What are you talking about?
In Germany we can definitely have Is, 1s, 0s and Os on license plates, and they're all visible distinct from each other because we have made a special typeface for this decades ago, which also makes it more difficult to turn for example an F into an E with just black tape, and it got adapted in many other countries since we started using it.

reptile_enthusiast_@reddit

NotYourReddit18@reddit
I remember a story about someone trying to be clever by getting a license plate spelling "NULL" because in computer systems a field with an empty value is often symbolized by the field having a value of
NULL(notice my deliberate use of the code typeface), and they thought that the computers used to analyze the speeding camera footage would confuse "NULL" andNULL, ending with them not getting a ticket. The computers meanwhile had no problem differentiating between "NULL" and
NULL, so they got all the tickets meant for them. But it also often occurred that when a computer stored a license plate as
NULLbecause they couldn't identify it and forwarded the ticket to a human operator, that said human operator not knowing about the difference betweenNULLand "NULL" only looked at the computer readout stating the license plate to beNULLinstead of looking at the actual footage, and then manually assigned the ticket to our genius with the "NULL" license plate despite no other details of the cars matching, followed by them complaining to their colleagues how dumb their software is that it can't even do such a simple match. So this "clever" person ended up with a bunch of wrongful tickets, and was allegedly ordered by the courts to change their license plate to something less confusing.
On the one hand I want to doubt this story because the computer directly displaying
NULLto users not knowing about its possible meaning is just bad UI design, on the other hand it's government software and training so everything imaginable is possible.Susurrus03@reddit
Along the same lines...
I have a specialized license plate with 3 letters stacked vertically and some regular numbers to the side. The stacked letters are still part of the tag. So a stacked ABC with 123 next to it is still ABC 123.
https://dmv.dc.gov/service/specialty-vehicle-tags
I haven't gotten any tickets that I'm aware of, but license plate readers in parking garages have a very hard time reading the vertical letters. I have had ones only read the numbers, so with the above example would just be 123, and have had them also read the stacked letters but incorrectly, usually they turn the top 2 letters into one other letter, so same example it might be RC 123.
nate2563@reddit
Almost all states count similar characters like zero and the letter "o" to be the same in the system, so literally would not help you at all. Probably the opposite as it would be very easy for a witness to remember your plate after committing a crime.

ekkidee@reddit
In Virginia they are stored in the system as the same character. Also true with I and 1.
So OO00 would be the same as 0O0O.
And 1II1 = IIII
hivemind_disruptor@reddit
Weird, in my country's plates the zeros have a little "cut" as to make them different from O.
In fact once you know it you will never mix them up.
Expensive_Bowler_128@reddit
In Virginia, 0 and O are considered to be interchangeable. BOOBS and B00BS would come back to the same plate in the system. This has caused me issues in other states. I registered my plate with an O at my university for parking, and they ticketed me because they read it as a 0.
StillWeCarryOn@reddit
I had a plate with an O on it in college and they gave me tickets wrongly for weeks because I had a medical parking accomodation to park in staff parking lots, but they input my license plate with a 0 instead of an O at the beginning of the year and Everytime they did patrols it looked like someone else was parking in the wrong areas. I think most states either use the letter O or zero, but not both, in their plates. I got out of several parking tickets in college because I had an out-of-state plate with a zero, and the state I was parking illegally in only used O.
Number_169@reddit
Not here they dont.
ReevesConnor@reddit
I'm not from the US, but in Germany we have a specific font for license plates. The letters are designed in a way to keep them apart and make it difficult to modify. For example, the O looks a little bit egg-like, and the 0 looks a little bit more rectangular and has a cut in the top left corner. You can take a look here if you want: GL-Nummernschild-Font
In addition to that license plates in Germany follow a specific schema (1-3 letters for the county code) - (1-3 letters of your choice) - (1-4 numbers of your choice).
So OB-OO-0000 would technically be a viable license plate.

Thanks 🫶
sonofahooman@reddit
Well, that's not possible in my country since the areas of numbers and letters are separated on the plate. Might be the case in the whole EU. You need special permission to mix it.
gingerconfetti@reddit
In Georgia, O’s and 0’s are the same.
huskeya4@reddit
This works especially well if you have out of state plates and park on a college campus. It’s not every time, but I got out of about half of my tickets on my college campus because they typed 0 instead of O. Some states use a certain amount of letters then numbers (or vice versa) so that’s why it helps to have out of state plates. Also, everyone fucking HATED my college campuses parking people. They changed student parking lanes every year (and sometimes after Christmas break) and purposefully put the signs on the far end of the lanes so you couldn’t see them to realize you weren’t in your passes designated area. If they did type it in correctly, it would block students from signing up for classes until they paid it. And we were all broke so…
LeaveNoStonedUnturn@reddit
In the UK there is a format that would tell you werher it's an O or a 0. Plates here follow AA11BBB format, meaning if the O/0 is in the first two or last three characters it's a letter, if it's in the second two characters it's a number. Private plates are the exception, but they are still supposed to follow that format.

In California, the number 0 does not appear in personalized plates, they are all the letter O.
