Which one? 1st gen or Fox
Posted by MrThursdayN1ght@reddit | projectcar | View on Reddit | 51 comments
Just got the full exhaust finished on the Fox and finally got some rolling shots of it. My brother made this little video of the two side by side.
‘65 coupe. Ridetech suspension, stock 289 2 bbl (c code) with deluxe interior. Full exhaust is the only “mod”
‘89 LX, stock block 302 + 76mm (GT45R) + TKO600
Which one y’all gonna cruise? Definitely a large performance gap between the two but something about the ‘65.

Turbo tko600 car would never get old for me, whether it makes 400whp or 600+.
Wife wants an early first gen, but I can't sway her on choosing a fastback :(
coffeejj@reddit
1st Gen all the way.
Genobee85@reddit
Man, Fox Bodies have really grown on me. I used to really detest them but I kinda wouldn't mind a coyote swapped FB.
MrThursdayN1ght@reddit (OP)
You can find both of those pieces on a fb marketplace near you. lol.
Do it.
Genobee85@reddit
I love your encouragement but I sadly just offloaded my 280Z project due to hard times and no space.
skeletons_asshole@reddit
Man either one is great. Weird seeing that fox get passed by a tow truck though, that hasn't been my personal experience with them.
MrThursdayN1ght@reddit (OP)
Appreciate the words. That’s just optics. We were just rolling 65ish and he came up between us. Then I got on it for a little bit.
skeletons_asshole@reddit
Hahah see that's odd for a fox too, around here usually the tow truck stops and picks them up
MrThursdayN1ght@reddit (OP)
Lmaooooo. You ain’t wrong.
Sandberg231984@reddit
Fox is only cool mustang. That first gen is quite ugly
MrThursdayN1ght@reddit (OP)
Dang!

. . . GEGity
MrThursdayN1ght@reddit (OP)
lol
It does mean “Good Enough Garage”. :)
SmokestackRising@reddit
Why is this even a question? There's a reason there will never be a new generation Mustang that pays homage to the fox body.
I was a teen when the fox body was the current gen. I love them. They were the coolest, even after the SN95 replaced it. I would turn away ten pristine 5.0 foxes for one first gen fastback.

First Gen. Find a fun color. Drive it.
Quick_1966@reddit
Well seeing as I have a 66 coupe that I’ve owned 21 yrs it’s 1st gen for me. Even though I grew up with fox bodies as the norm I just never really did like the way they looked. Now that I’m getting older I appreciate a nice one though.
Str8Six91@reddit
It’s really a matter of preference, intentions, and level of investment. Both are good choices, depending.
If you’re not diving into a deep budget, don’t plan on serious platform modifications, and plan to drive it often, I’d go Fox. The 1st-gen car is basically a pretty Falcon, and I wouldn’t want one without a huge chassis upgrade. That said, one could argue that the Fox is merely a sporty Fairmont, but it is a more modern car. Bang-for-buck, though, the Fox will give better performance.
I’d recommend whichever one “calls to you”. If you don’t start with something you feel passionately about, it doesn’t matter how much money you throw at it— you’re not going to be satisfied in the end.

Fox
WinterberryFaffabout@reddit
Functionally I'm sure the fox body is better, but I can't get past how ugly it is. 1st gen for me.
No-Branch8121@reddit
1st gen, I live in commiefornia and that fox would be on emissions lock down so hard you’d never be able to drive it again.
GlassJoe32@reddit
I had a fox body with a fully built 302. Never had issues passing when I was in the navy.
No-Branch8121@reddit
Cool story, that guys turbocharged Foxbody ain’t ever passing smog unless it’s done illegally which gets harder to do every year.
N0Tbanned@reddit
Sorry we don’t live in retard states
GlassJoe32@reddit
It didn’t have a turbo just a top end from truck flow and a bottom end from eagle assemblies as well as all the supported bolt on modifications. Always passed smog without issue.
MrThursdayN1ght@reddit (OP)
You do make a good point but I do live in Texas and this isn’t a concern with its modern classic car registration (no emission testing/inspection).
With that said, I converted the fox to a Holley HP efi ECU and coil on plug setup.
OofNation739@reddit
Both, ideally id love either.
However, depending on unlimited time and money, I have some plans for each.
Id love to have a fox with a nice suspension and the new 2.3T, setup for some autocross event. There was this built fox I saw once like 86, with alot of suspension work made into a hillclimb time attack beast. That looked awesome and sounded great. Would love that.
As for the classic, itd love a complete modern drivetrain/suspension/brakes on one with just a new 5.0 coyote in it. Itd be more than enough. However, I wouldnt mind having a half beater classic, with a 2-4" lift and beefy ass wide wheels with the classic 302/300. Itd be fun, but I dont have anywhere to do that at.

Fox body notchback
MrThursdayN1ght@reddit (OP)
I am/was too poor to own the fastback first gen and notchback fox. lol
Can I post my zelle? 😤😂
WatercressSpiritual@reddit
1st gen for cool. Fox body for fast.
Fox bodies are still cool.
MrThursdayN1ght@reddit (OP)
They have earned their modern classic car badge.
Hazee302@reddit
I didn’t like either…. 2nd and 4th are objectively better. Fight me

It’s taken me a lifetime to finally come around to loving the Fox bodies, but the first-gen Mustang will always hold the most sway for me.
salvage814@reddit
It depends on what you are doing. Restoring first gen is the one to go with. Building a race car or anything fun the fox body.
MrThursdayN1ght@reddit (OP)
First Gen is a survivor car with true patina of sitting in a barn in West Texas since 1984 until I bought it in Aug 2022. Did a vice grip style revival but put a peeper suspension (ridetech) and nice disc brakes on it.
It is a deluxe interior car so the inside is what is original (sans front seats… I had to reskin them). It is the highlight of that car.
salvage814@reddit
Doing what vice grip garage, FSM, Fryberger all those guys that do the junkyard build videos isn't impressive. The majority of people that know what end of the wrench to hold could do it.
That being said its a nice car no matter what.
spitestang@reddit
I've had a 65 coupe, 69 coupe, 70 sportsroof, and now finally my dream car, a 69 mach.
Clearly im biased but the foxbody is growing on me so it's prob my next one I'm getting. It's a better platform for sure but im biased to the first gens.
04BluSTi@reddit
I've had both and liked both, so, both.
MrThursdayN1ght@reddit (OP)
A man with fine taste I see.
DirtyThirtyDrifter@reddit
1st gen all day.
captspooky@reddit
I like the Fox, but I acknowledge i like that body style more than most people probably do
EksCelle@reddit
IMO the Foxbody is a better platform but the 1st gen is the better car, if that makes sense. The fact that you have both means you're living the dream!
TheseCod2660@reddit
Fox all day! More agile, more versatile. 1st gen for looks though.
MrThursdayN1ght@reddit (OP)
First Gen with the complete ridetech suspension is better than the fox with the drag setup right now. But it’s got all the bells and whistles. I’m currently putting a 306 for a vintage Paxton blower right now. Hopefully get it driving (pre-blower) in the next month.
TheseCod2660@reddit
That’s going to be insane! Cant wait to see it!
I drifted a fox body a couple of years ago and was blown away by how good it was! Turn-in was great, weight balance felt natural, very responsive and impressive. Honestly felt very similar to my Nissan drift car. After that I realized they had insane potential for everything lol
Recent-Campaign911@reddit
Ive worked on more first and secong gen mustangs than I've wanted to as a Chevy guy. Definitely would go first gen all day.
MrThursdayN1ght@reddit (OP)
The ease and simplicity is definitely a selling point for those with wanting daily needs. Plus so many parts and repops.
thepvbrother@reddit
Or? No. And.
8N-QTTRO@reddit
1st gen, any day of the week. But, admittedly, I've never liked the Foxbody all that much.
