Chickens are nasty. Had a relative use a garage as a 'coop' to corral her chickens against all better advice. The chicken shit stains would not come off the concrete.
Building a proper coop will be less expensive in the long run.
I have chickens. There are some rats, but they are well managed by my and other neighbourhood cats. No snakes at all. Probably the fact that I'm living in city helps.
It's like a little colony sim that the population grows or falls based on your strategy and maintenance schedule. If you get really good at it and get a few rare ones, you can breed a colony of SSS grade shrimp and sell them to other shrimp nerds.
It actually sounds more efficient than betta fish farming because betta fishes need a lot of water to move around, and you can’t really keep more one in the same tank (unless you want to play fish hunger games)
I really wonder how you would sell this. Can you just walk into a restaurant or shrimp manufacturer asking if they want to buy your swimming pools filled with shrimp?
You can't turn a profit with chickens unless you have a lot of them. A friend of mine had chickens in his backyard and it turned out it cost him about £5 per egg. It was good egg though.
The fuck was he feeding them? Artisanal handpicked grains from the moon? When we had chickens we used about a bag of feed a month and that wasn't even €5 per chicken
Guy I work with says chicken feed has gone up a bunch, but maybe he doesn't shop around for it. Just like everything else at the moment, margins are thin. Also this is in the USA so I don't know what kinds of differences there would be
My best friend is a lawyer making 300k having multiple flats he rents out and is grocery shopping at Aldi exclusively.
But here in Germany that’s normal.
What I have found in the crawlspace someone who let the chickens under the house.
Chickenshit everywhere- literally everywhere, there was not a single square inch of the ground not covered in chicken shit.
Rotten eggs, which had brought in snakes and rats who ate them.
And several dead cats. Apparently, between the smell emanated by the shit and rotten eggs, nobody ever noticed the fetid smell of rotting corpse; it may have made it even more pleasant for a time. Surely, the cats were bitten by one of the snakes who had come under the house to eat the snakes or rats who were there to eat the eggs.
Just don't do it. They will tear the house down rather than repair it one day because of this.
It's actually not a bad idea. Not to keep them in the crawlspace exclusively but you let a few chickens in there for a few hours they'll clear it of any crickets, spiders, rodents, any pests they can find.
Anon breeding a new breed of chickens. Also this remind me of my homeland's way of raising chicken. They have elevated homes because of the frequent flooding, below they have their chickens or other livestock.
I think there's an international charity trying to replace chickens in climate-change affected parts of Asia with ducks. Y'know, because they're better at swimming.

Imagine the smell. And the snakes
WoolooOfWallStreet@reddit
Chickens aren’t very smart, but once they figure out they can eat rats and snakes, they WILL eat rats and snakes
You can tell when they realize this around the time the rats and snakes no longer become a problem

Lastburn@reddit
If you have a substantial backyard they make great pest control for your garden
ordeci@reddit
But they will also destroy all lawns and other plants until only dirt remains.
Lastburn@reddit
Not if its big enough , 800 sq is big enough that 3 chicken won't be able to destroy it by the time it regrows
Scary_Cup6322@reddit
Depends on the number of chickens. 2 or 3 are more than enough for an average person, and the damage they do should be manageable.
lucidposeidon@reddit
So more like life control than pest control?

I would agree with you except - it's not Anon's house.

jellyGATO@reddit
What do dwarf shrimps look like?
240psam@reddit
Google image "fancy caridina shrimp" and you will see loads of them in wild patterns. These are like the shiny Pokémon of shrimp basically.

They look awesome mate

Maybe it wasn't 5 but one egg definitely cost him more than a whole box at the store.
Jaruut@reddit
Does he know he doesn't have to pay the chickens?
kpingvin@reddit
They unionised.
naturalinfidel@reddit
Somewhere in Miami there is a chicken chilling with a healthy Roth Ira and amazing healthcare.
Munnin41@reddit
Well he was doing something wrong then. Because we had em before egg prices skyrocketed and were still paying less per egg than in the supermarket.
Killashard@reddit
That cost probably included all the startup stuff, like building the coop, potentially running water/electric to it, etc.
