I feel seen and justified

I saw a post recently asking if other people also had a box of random cables and chargers and connectors and miscellaneous, electronic peripherals or accessories. And for those of us that , here we are sitting on a gold mine.
DarcFenix@reddit
Who’s paying that!?
No, seriously. Who? We both work IT and have a house full.
CompletelyPuzzled@reddit
The site mentioned is usedcables.com But on their 'Sell Product' page it says
AARP MEMBERS PLEASE NOTE:
Although we greatly appreciate being mentioned in their recent article, nobody there checked with us first!
We do not purchase generic cables, such as those included for free with computers, printers, monitors etc.
We do not purchase studio cables, such as microphone cables, TRS cables, or Neutrik cables.
We do not purchase bulk or commercial-grade cables, such as spools of wire used in construction or remodeling
These cables have no resale value, so they're not worth anything to us.
Many municipalities and some metal recyclers provide drop-off services for these types of cables.
BigConstruction4247@reddit
The site won't load. I presume because it's overwhelmed with boomers trying to see if their son's old Nintendo wires will find their next cruise.
spyder7723@reddit
Old Nintendo stuff probably would. There is a big market for old Nintendo aid cause modern emulations are garbage. Old giant printer and monitor cables have no market.
JasterMereel42@reddit
One thing I regret getting rid of was the NES from my childhood.
AquafreshBandit@reddit
My parallel port cables will fund my retirement, damnit!
rogerm3xico@reddit
Probably not a cruise, more like standing in front of me at the gas station checkout buying countless scratch-offs and making stupid inappropriate statements to the guy that doesn't look like him behind the counter.
Highlyspirited@reddit
I can only image the calls they are getting from older people trying to clean out their garage. 😂
blacfd@reddit
Bold of you to assume that AARP uses fact checkers
Zealousideal_Let_439@reddit
That used to be a pretty high quality magazine, tbh.
Now it's shit like all the others.
Individual-Trick3310@reddit
Bon Jovi was on the cover recently, that's worth some shock humor value.
MCMcGreevy@reddit
Yes
Hey-buuuddy@reddit
Yeah there is no way there’s demand for printer port cables.
zaypuma@reddit
Was trying to scroll down to see what i can get for this box of db9 to db25 null modem cables that stresses my marriage.
These-Prune-1529@reddit
What about somewhere outside of America? 🤔
Angelworks42@reddit
I'm into vintage gaming and those component gamecube cables really do go for that much easily (actually far more these days) - rest I'm not so sure about.
The reason apparently is that the original cables were only ever sold online and were never really advertised so there's not a lot of them around, but people want them for hdmi scalers. The original cables also used a custom asic so weren't all that reproducible.
Someone did reverse engineer the protocol so it can be done for cheaper now days but some people be crazy like that :).
I_Got_A_Truck@reddit
Same. Maybe some 68 pin SCSI might go for some money but most of those prices are wack.
NL_Gray-Fox@reddit
I'll just buy a DisplayPort cable at the store for 8 bucks and sell it for 150 I guess, no idea why no one is doing this life hack.
Nagroth@reddit
It's only "branded" specialty cables, for example the gamecube component cable. You can find a new off-brand cable, that probably works better than the original ones, for around $50. It's hardcore collectors looking for the specific OG cables, and while you might be able to ebay them yourself for that price they aren't going to move very quickly. So a place like this might buy them from you but not for anywhere close to that price... you're probably only going to get 10-20%
baudmiksen@reddit
There's a few different versions of display port cables just like hdmi and even the latest top of the line ones with high bandwidth don't cost as much as their estimate
MontasJinx@reddit
Yeah some of those prices are a little odd.
DarcFenix@reddit
Right?
epicenter69@reddit
I may or may not have a bin the size of a kitchen trash can full of old cables. I refer all questions to my attorney. The wife doesn’t know about them.
Ldbrin2@reddit
I just gave goodwill 2 big boxes (35 years worth).
mom2artists@reddit
I have several boxes worth, I was thinking to do same. 🫠
Ldbrin2@reddit
I’m trying not to leave my kids Too much junk when I die or have to move 😉
BigConstruction4247@reddit
You just have them eleventy billion dollars!!!
Ldbrin2@reddit

I have an ex who has recently cleared out a lot of his old cables... I hope that he doesn't see that ad... he'll kick himself if he does...

That’s what all the drug abusers do in my location. Sell cable to get cash
mekanub@reddit
I’ve thrown away a fortune.
DrumsKing@reddit
I finally tossed my Monster S-Video cable. I paid a fortune for it. I still keep some RCA around. Never know!
JenninMiami@reddit
I just threw out SO MANY of these cables when moving. 🫣
Deruji@reddit
Going in the loft for that GameCube component cable..
Boris_Darling@reddit
My day has finally come!
dubsac5150@reddit
What about my 65 miles of coaxial cables?
simulated_copy@reddit
Nobody I can buy any of it off amazon for cheap
Redgenie2020@reddit
I bailed out my kid a couple times with old cables.
Few-Emergency5971@reddit
Jesus, I have all of these and more...
CombatRedRover@reddit
Except it's now like my comic book collection: I know it's worth a couple of thousand dollars in that box, but the emotional value is much greater than the monetary value.
Gut_Reactions@reddit
You're emotionally connected to cables?
Western-Calendar-352@reddit
I’m emotionally connected by cables.
CombatRedRover@reddit
I mean, you're not????
😉
frackthestupids@reddit
Who doesn’t love fast and wide scsi?
LeMonza_@reddit
I hate every cable I see from VGA to USB...
Gut_Reactions@reddit
Not really, but I guess I am attached to those charging blocks that plug into the wall.
kent_eh@reddit
I used to feel that way about my records, but after some time I realized I've already got all the same music on CD and ripped on my computer. I haven't touched the vinyl in over 30 years. It's just sitting in boxes gathering dust.
So I sold it off to a couple of used record stores and never looked back.
CombatRedRover@reddit
To each their own. For me, the comic books that I bought when I was 12 mean a lot more to me. And they don't take up that much space.
Honestly, the cables and such I mostly keep because I know some of these are going to be hard to find an expensive to replace.
kent_eh@reddit
Same. I've been burned in the past not having a crucial cable for some old piece of equipment.
harleychick3cat@reddit
2 depressing points....
That article is from an AARP magazine.
I KNOW it is an AARP article....
nirreskeya@reddit
I think I still have a Playstation (1) Link Cable. Maybe that's worth something.
Edit: Looks like $20-$30. Oh and this original GameBoy Link Cable might be worth $15.
NecessaryOk780@reddit
It’s a trap! You’ll get NOTHING for your cables and will need them within 30 days of the sale.
OwlPrestigious543@reddit
Swimming pools. Movie stars.
oxgillette@reddit
If you look at the AARP page (https://www.aarp.org/home-living/cash-for-box-of-old-cables) there's no mention of UsedCables, though it's pretty much the same nonsense - have to wonder whether the Chris Morris who wrote it is the Day Today & On The Hour Chris Morris.
Individual-Trick3310@reddit
200 bucks for Gamecube cables? That's.... insane.
winteryetiy@reddit
Seems that company's website crashed. Moment gone.
CleverNickName-69@reddit
You said "a box" like you only have one. I think I consolidated down to two boxes at the most recent house purge.
Ok-Limit-9726@reddit
BOYS WE ARE RICH,
AND WE ALWAYS KNEW IT!!!!
how good was it 10 years ago finding that mini usb to usb2 cable when you needed it!!!!
NL_Gray-Fox@reddit
Total BS, yes the Nintendo cables might have a bit of resale value if it's the original cable but come on, DisplayPort is available at every computer store and is the go-to cable if you want the best option for your computer.
Snugrilla@reddit
Yeah displayport isn't even "old" is it? I mean I don't know of anything newer/better.
NL_Gray-Fox@reddit
By IT terms it's old (early 2000s), but yeah there's currently nothing better and the standard is still being updated.
There's HDMI but that is just for consumer products, TVs and stuff plus HDMI requires a license fee.
Toasted_Dustupz99@reddit
Am looking everywhere for the mini usb charging cord that fits my Nikon Coolpix I bought in the 'aughts. (2006, 2007.) Everything I've found is just slightly too damn big. Stuck with batteries I guess. Never throw your cords away.
beautifulkale124@reddit
oh man, a coolpix was my first digital camera, i wish i still had that motherfucker.
Snugrilla@reddit
Still have mine; still works and honestly the photos still look good to me. I guess once you get over a certain number of pixels it doesn't make that much difference.
JustAJB@reddit
You are probably looking for a UC-E6
Toasted_Dustupz99@reddit
Many thanks! I will check that out :)
WheezyGonzalez@reddit
Too much effort
WordleFan88@reddit
I'm definately showing this to my wife. I have to guard my box of cables from being Marie Kondoing mine all the time.
Status-Effort-9380@reddit
I store them with my Beanie Babies in my bank’s vault.
hoppyrules@reddit
You say that now, I made the mistake of telling my 78 yo mother about this a couple weeks ago and ended up spending hours on a Saturday going through 6 boxes of cables at my parent’s place that go to nothing they own and are worth nothing. Big regret on my part - it also opened a wormhole to a box of cameras that are somehow pre-digital and worth nothing as well.
Little-Efficiency336@reddit
Awesome! Finally have a use for these!
Flyin_Bryan@reddit
I can’t sell my old 30-pin iPhone cord; how would I charge the iPhone 4S that I saved?
Flyin_Bryan@reddit
How about old landline phone cords? How much are those worth?
StillC5sdad@reddit
We did it , boys
dbrmn73@reddit
Damn, if the GameCube cable is worth that much how much is a fully working GameCube system with controllers worth? I've got one in the closet
idio242@reddit
Not as much as that, very specific, cable - that you almost certainly do not have.
dbrmn73@reddit
You mean this cable?
idio242@reddit
No.
espressotorte@reddit
So basically the OG GameCube cable is it
diamond@reddit
Money? MONEY? You expect me to sell these things? What the hell is wrong with you? You know as soon as I get rid of this 12-foot SCSI to USB-A adapter I'm going to realize that I need it.
Seriously, some people...
paddycr@reddit
I have a box full of this crap and my wife keeps nagging me to trash it. Who is buying this type of stuff?
MCMcGreevy@reddit
lol. Nintendo GameCube cables being worth $150?!?!
$9.99 on EBay.
Sorry folks. They ain’t worth shit.
idio242@reddit
The official ones are collectible and worth a good amount as they were quite rare to begin with. They were only sold online through Nintendo, directly. Most people using a GameCube then didnt have a tv that would utilize these cables, or were kids, who didnt care.
Sure, you can get knock offs for cheap, but thats not why people are buying them.
Matty1138@reddit
Yeah. Anyone who went to the trouble of tracking down a set of official GameCube component cables back in the day is gonna remember that they have a set of official GameCube component cables.
I sold mine along with my GameCube fifteen years ago, and I still regret doing that.
idio242@reddit
Looked up recent sales on eBay and the legit cables sell (as in, sold completed listings) for closer to $300.
Which really makes me want to sell mine.
texred355@reddit
What? You mean my box of SCSI cables that I hoarded, aren’t worth anything? ‘Scratches head’ hmmmm
Buddy-Lov@reddit
Bullshit
gigantischemeteor@reddit
I hear the distant cries of disappointment and disbelief from thousands of children on Christmas morning unwrapping boxes filled with Grandpop’s old cable collection! “But sweetheart, I read that these cables were worth so much, you’re going to want to hold onto them. Grandpop would have wanted you to have them as your one big gift this Christmas!”
Greyraver2k9@reddit
I….. remember these things….. may even have some laying around
Zooter88@reddit
Yes! I guess I do have a secure retirement fund.
Jefwho@reddit
Those Nintendo Component Cables have been worth money for a very long time now. I was lucky to order them directly from Nintendo in the early 2000’s. Don’t really need them anymore, but I’m not selling them anytime soon
brooklynbotz@reddit
Please show me who's paying this
SnowblindAlbino@reddit
I have bunches of DVI and DisplayPort cables collecting dust at work. At least a dozen of each, plus some more at home. Someone needs to come get them and give me cash.
Oldebookworm@reddit
My only question is if there is any copper in those cables
These-Prune-1529@reddit

Actually I knew a guy who picks up junk and he had a box where he put the cut electrical cords, electronics cords, and Christmas tree lights without lights. Once the box was full it was worth over a 100 bucks because of the copper
Naive_Product_5916@reddit
i'll take five bucks for the whole lot.

Well f me I just threw out a big box of that stuff that I had been accumulating for years.

Now show me the resale value on the boxes from every phone I've ever owned.
My kid's inheritance is based on this!
peacefinder@reddit
Ugh, that reminds me. I have to dig up an ADB mouse.
MCMcGreevy@reddit
Guarantee you the ROI between the amount of space this clutter takes up in your life combined with the hassle of finding a seller makes it a net loss.
Junior_Lavishness_96@reddit
I got all kinds of cables and power adapters.
Scared-Researcher-86@reddit
Now I've just got to untangle them all.
plasteroid@reddit
Yes if you are buying them new on Amazon or eBay. But no one got time for that. Dealing with trying to sell them is not with the time or energy for the ROI. I’d rather donate to a local charity that resells stuff
ranoutofbacon@reddit
resale value is only what the highest someone is willing to pay
Dangerous-Sorbet2480@reddit
