Eh. I'm on the fence about this. My company gave me a newer truck. For some reason lots of drivers assume my high beams are one when they aren't. I'm constantly getting flashed as others do to warn the driver. So I'm constantly being blinded and having to flash my actual high beams to show them they are not on. It's getting ridiculous
Yeah I mentioned it to my boss. It has to go to Freightliner anywho to adjust my idle engine shut off timer. Will have them look at the headlights as well . (Can't adjust idle timer at company shop. )
I worded that poorly, but its not inentional. I'm actively tryig to get it resolved. The level and angle seeems to be correct. I think its the luminocity or something. When im behind drivers it never goes above their trunk until they are clearly ahead of me. I dont want to blind others and the headaches from all the constant flashes Im getting is not pleasant.
"Luminosity" or brightness doesn't matter. You can take headlights with the maximum legal brightness or above and adjust the angle and it won't blind people.
If you're blinding people they are aimed too high. They need to be aimed at the ground basically for bright LEDs.
Correct angle for low beams is level with the light source though not angled DOWN. That said the description of it going higher the further they are sounds like the lights are pointed UP which is definitely not legal.
Then lower the adjustment on the headlights. Should only take about 3 turns. It's an easy fix. If you can't do it, then have maintenence to knock it out in a couple of minutes (that includes the time it takes for you to pull in and open the hood)
The problem is 100% on you if you have not reported it to your company, and 100% on the company if they are not doing anything about it. If you are getting flashed regularly, you are a danger in the road. Stop driving at night until you get it fixed.
I used to have a Kenworth with the factory quartz lights option. Same thing. Constantly. And I was warned when I ordered them. It's not an alignment issue.
And Stupid AF!! Whoever made the video shouldn't be arrested. This is 10X worse than the worst bright lights. This idiot is going to kill someone someday.
Assuming you have a cascadia you can adjust the angle the lights shine at with a screwdriver. I think it was flathead but don’t exactly recall. There’s a plastic cover on each side you pop out and turn left or right to raise or lower.
A lot of manufacturers are equipping vehicles with overly bright low beams straight from the factory. They do this because many of their customers are selfish ass-holes. The rest of us suffer.
Sounds like you don't know how to aim headlights. They are not supposed to be level with the light source. At about 25ft, the top portion of the brightest point of the beam should be about 2" lower than the height at the headlight
The official legal correct adjustment is "at or slightly below the height of the center of the lens at 25 feet" so the 2 inches below sounds like an arbitrary number a company came up with to be within that parameter.
IMO it should be specific heights so that taller vehicles do not blind oncoming smaller cars but I do not make the rules.
Every manufacturer has an aiming convention. It really does not matter how bright the low beams are provided the tailing vehicle observes reasonable following distance and has them aimed correctly. There needs to be some bold text on the first and last page of every leveling kit instructions that remind the purchaser to adjust their lights.
I was recently in the market for a new truck and saw the most amazing yet simple thing. A little scroll wheel on the dash of a modern Nissan that adjusts headlight angle on the fly. Put 500 lbs in the bed and now you’re blinding people? Scroll the wheel and fix it from the driver’s seat. It’s such a brilliant concept that I hope they grant the patent for free for the greater good like Volvo did with the seatbelt.
Wait. Really? I’ve heard the US has laws against having movable headlights due to some vintage car that had them unreliably tied to the steering. I’ve never seen anything like it prior to this 2020 (‘22?) Titan Pro4X.
Huh. Wow. Today I learned. Might look into it later today, I'm curious now to know how common the feature is here.
I've exclusively owned hatchbacks except for one, and they've always had the feature. Fully loaded with passengers and luggage I wouldn't know how to properly aim the lights without.
I was thinking along the lines of semi trucks but yeah pickups have a LOT more variation in headlight angle when loading up and leveling kits especially are not great for headlight alignment. I did do aftermarket lights on my pickup when I had it which had super easy to adjust beams but it was still on the housing just easy to reach with hood open.
Good projectors are actually better since the light cut off line is a lot better than a halogen reflector. If properly adjusted, they are of little issue unless you are cresting a hill or bump, which affects all light sources
I'd prefer more diffuse light, both as an oncoming driver who won't be as blinded by the beams when they do hit me, and as the first-person driver who would like to know if a deer or something is approaching from the side of the road.
You're definitely right about yellow light being better and easier on the eyes, but it doesn't look as cool as white lights. I guess at equal output, it's easier to look into the yellow light. I don't get why manufacturers all went with white lights for the headlights. If they were all yellow, even if they had higher output vs halogens, I think you would see a lot less posts about headlights
adjusting the headlights on a commercial vehicle like a semi truck to aim lower than the factory-setting, in a way that causes the light pattern not to meet federal aiming specifications, can be a violation of the regulations under Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration/Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108 (FMVSS 108) / 49 CFR § 393.24 legal framework — depending on exactly how it’s adjusted and what not…
Factory setting would mean properly adjusted and not blinding oncoming traffic. Nobody is saying to adjust it too low. Maybe think about it properly first
you CAN NOT touch a commercial vehicle headlights or adjust them in ANY shape or form… and if you get in an accident and lawyers find out that you touched your lights…. AND THEY WILL… good luck to you
Just read your own citation of the code again. You can adjust the headlights, but they need to be back in line with factory settings.
It's just a couple of set screws that control this usually. Unless your truck is very new or you've never got a pothole or bump, the lights can fall out of adjustment all on their own over time and leave you with the same ticket for being incompetent.
Bro, we are talking about commercial vehicles with lights that are already adjusted out of factory and comply with FMCSA regulations but they seem to be too bright to people such as Freightliner Cascadia.
I don't know how to tell you this, but someone with just as much ability to do a bad job as yourself installed those lights at the factory and they are so far removed from the buyer, at the dealership, and even further from the next guy, at the used dealership, that no amount of law quoting and spec sheet reading is going to fix a physical problem in a way that comes back to the guy assembling the vehicle.
These aren't airline mechanics putting this stuff together. It's an overworked or sometimes just careless guy with some bolt on parts and a tolerance for error that gets larger as the truck nears completion.
So if you replace a lamp assembly, what is the last step you need to do for the truck to be roadworthy? Adjust it.
Let’s say you do a lot of off road deliveries to work sites, loggers, oil/gas fields, farms, mills, etc, and one day you notice that the passenger side lamp has bounced out of alignment with the driver side lamp. What do you do? Adjust it.
Correct and when you adjusted it to the factory setting it would look like they are too bright again. I have driven many Cascadias and I constantly get flashed at by other drivers who think I have my high beams on. It is illegal to adjust them horizontally to a setting not approved by FMCSA.
Exactly. Nobody here is suggesting that you adjust them to any position not authorized by the FMCSR. What others have suggested is that it’s possible the lights were not installed properly at the factory, and in that case, will need to be adjusted to conform to FMCSR standards. You’re literally just arguing with yourself here.
Chill and go take a 34, you’re clearly wound way too tight.
Yes you can adjust them if they are not at the correct setting. Nothing about what you posted says that you can't, so don't spread this wrong information
Most of the vehicles blinding oncoming traffic are using LED conversion bulbs in headlight fixtures that were certified for use with halogen bulbs. It is against the law to put LED bulbs into a headlight fixture that didn’t have them to begin with. Ask me how I know this.
Ah. Yeah. I’ve been down that road. Fuckin’ Lasfit (the cheapest dogshit that pays to be at the top of google searches) completely gave up on putting the LED in the precise location to emulate a tungsten element so the bulb itself is infinitely adjustable and not securable. This guarantees it’s nowhere near the highly precise adjustment it needs to be in order to remotely work with a reflector.
Have you noticed that nobody agrees with you on this? Do you think that means you're right somehow. Go read the supposed law again you posted and actually point out the part where it says you can't adjust your headlights to spec.
And you still can't prove what you posted makes you right, since there is nothing in it that says it's illegal. Can't say good try to you since normal people learn from being wrong. You just keep on pushing your wrong opinion
“Factory settings” is not where the trim screws are set. It’s where the headlights are aimed. If you were not supposed to be able to adjust them, they wouldn’t make them adjustable. You can double down on your misunderstanding or you can try to learn. Please try to learn.
What? Complete nonsense. The regulations state that headlamps must be adjustable (aimable). The very obvious reason for this rule is so that you can adjust them correctly.
lol it’s cute that you think any of them really give a shit about any of their customers. Maybe if you’re spending million + per vehicle just maybe slightly. The regular mf. Not in the least bit

YOU CAN NOT adjust commercial vehicles horizontally idiot. Ever heard of ChatGPT? If you have enough brain cells to ask it the right question, it will tell you who is lying…
Y are you so butthurt about this. It's ok, you were wrong. You cited a source saying that you were wrong.
Headlights just like suspension get out of alignment. You must make sure it's aligned properly which is even or slightly down. You must adjust it back if it's too far down or facing slightly up.
Why is Reddit full of clowns like you who like to argue about things they don’t know and when they have nothing to come back on they call the other person butt hurt, it’s like Reddit is infested with your type.
Somebody told you this years ago and you don’t have the reading comprehension to understand the regulation. So you double down and stubbornly insist you are correct.
There is this thing called AI, it recently came to be, ever heard of it? You know, ChaTGPT? If you know how to ask it the right question it will give you an answer you won’t like to hear.
AI is flat out wrong an insanely high percentage of the time. It is also designed to make you feel good so you keep using it, so it's not always going to tell you when you're wrong. That's a feature, not a bug, it's baked into the models. Using AI as a primary source has got to be the stupidest shit I've ever seen.
Are commercial truck drivers in the United States allowed to adjust the headlights on their truck?
Good question — the short answer is: it depends on what you mean by “adjust.”
Here’s a breakdown:
✅ What Truck Drivers Can Do
Commercial truck drivers in the U.S. may make basic adjustments to their headlights — for example:
• Turning the headlight aiming screws to align the beam properly (e.g., after replacing a bulb).
• Adjusting headlights that are visibly misaligned due to vibration or maintenance.
• Replacing bulbs or housings with OEM-approved parts.
These actions are generally permitted as long as:
• The adjustment doesn’t violate Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS 108).
• The lights still meet DOT-approved specifications (beam pattern, brightness, color, etc.).
• The truck remains compliant with state vehicle inspection and FMCSA lighting requirements (49 CFR §393.11).
⸻
🚫 What Drivers Should Not Do
Truck drivers may not:
• Modify or “upgrade” headlights with non-DOT-approved aftermarket kits (e.g., HID or LED conversions that don’t meet FMVSS 108).
• Alter the wiring, beam color, or intensity beyond what the manufacturer allows.
• Make adjustments that cause glare or unsafe beam patterns (which can be cited under state traffic laws or DOT inspections).
If the vehicle is owned or maintained by a carrier company, the company’s maintenance department or a qualified technician is typically responsible for performing or approving adjustments.
⸻
🧭 In Summary
• Yes: Minor aiming adjustments are fine if done correctly and within legal specs.
• No: Major modifications or non-compliant changes are not allowed.
• Best practice: Have a certified mechanic or company maintenance tech perform or verify headlight adjustments — especially for vehicles under DOT inspection requirements.
Depends on the car and the person. My 2021 has automatic headlight adjusting because it was also one of the first cars to have an illuminated grille and badge (and still one of the brightest). From a distance it looks like I might have my brights on but the closer you are it dims down (especially if I’m at a higher elevation in the distance and you are down low because the headlights purposely aim lower). In drive thru’s I can see the top of the beam perfectly cut off on the bottom of someone’s window.
It’s stupid to have bright headlights that flood outward. It defeats the purpose of having higher powered lights. The more it’s concentrated at a proper angle to the road the better illumination you get on the asphalt (the entire point).
My headlights also physically turn to the direction you are rotating your wheel to see things while turning. VW has had that integrated into their vehicles for years.
If it's excessive... excessive light is the problem, especially towards the blue end of the spectrum.
Ideally, headlights should be heavier on the yellow, very little blue, pointed mostly forward and down, but also illuminating further ahead and to the sides at reduced intensity, but still enough to see around a corner or see something approaching the road from the side.
In short, headlights should be optimized to facilitate the driver's situational awareness while minimizing their detrimental effects on other driver's situational awareness.
There is laws that limit the second part but are IMO a little lax with high strong headlight beams have gotten. Biggest issue IMO is LED reflector headlights since projector usually has very good hard cut off.
Those newer F150s have some outrageous bright lights I flash a dude because I thought it was high beams he flashed me back with some milltary grade highbeams !!
The way a vehicle is loaded can effect headlights as well. Not so much with commercial trucks but light duty trucks and cars can be loaded too heavy in the back that the front end tips slightly up causing low beam headlights to appear as brights. There are two solutions for this. Learn to balance loads and that will solve it and a few other dangerous issues, or just turn on your high beams. This usually shoots the light beam up over the incoming traffic. The second is not perfect and does not always work.
Truck company owner? 🤣🤣🤣 as if you know all about regulations? Bro do you know how many companies I work for where owners did not their head from their ass?

Obviously no one is going to go to the trouble of adjusting the headlights to put them out of spec. People (myself included) adjust them to get them back into spec.
What messes people up is the sharp cut off and the very focused beam on modern LED projectors. And the brightness is the same throughout the beam, whereas on older halogen headlights it was brightest in the center and is radiated outward it would get dimmer and dimmer in a gradient.
Has it occurred to you that the federal regulations may allow too much latitude?
Some vehicles' headlights are fine from the factory. Others are blinding. All of them presumably meet the regulations. All that means is that the regulations are inadequate.
Subaru does that. But we didn’t chose the car for its strong headlights. We are not selfish assholes. Who the hell choses a car based on headlights these days ?
I was actually thinking that next time I go car shopping, it might be a good idea to try out being the car in front, and an oncoming car while my wife test drives it at night.
Hoping that I remember, and that it doesn't turn out to be a situation where we have to buy one on short notice.
It's definitely ridiculous, I have a large led light bar on my RZR for night riding and it's stupid bright, putting light bars on normal vehicles is such a waste, and dangerous when used inappropriately.
I think the main issue is the lights are coming from the factory aimed too high and people won't adjust them. I just had a brand new headlight put on my Freightliner and it was aimed high as well. Looks like hi-beams
I remember when I was at Swift back in 2006-7 we had a headlight adjusting area at some terminals. Line the beams up with a line from a particular distance and good to go.
Was stopped at a red light last week behind a new electric Mustang. Its brake lights were so bright I had to look away because I was about to have an epileptic seizure. Holy shit nothing needs to be that bright. It’s ridiculous.
My wife has one of these and ive never had any issue when driving behind her. Might want to get an in depth eye exam if thats causing you so much distress, especially in day light.
Agree, this is creating a problem for yourself that doesn’t need to exist. You’re either going to get arrested or issued a ticket or some Driver‘s gonna remember what your truck looked like and pull around and chase you down and find you at your next stop and attempt to murder you.
There are a lot of mentally unhinged people in this world who do not give a fuck if they get caught and have to go to jail for assaulting or murdering you.
It’s sad to say, but nowadays there are a lot of people who don’t have anything to live for, they’re drowning in debt. They can’t get a girl/woman, food prices are on the rise and won’t seem to come down, wife divorced him got custody of the kids took the house they have to pay alimony. Can’t get a promotion at the job, their jobs being replaced by AI/robotics. All someone with the wrong mental mind frame needs is a nudge to go over the edge and this is just that catalyst.
The only people in this thread that are pissed are the constant high beam people or the low beams ridiculously bright people. & I hate both of those people.
Not everyone knows, and police lights don't usually trigger seizures in those with photosensitive epilepsy. These would be much more likely to cause a seizure because they are higher intensity, higher frequency, and aimed right at the victim's face.
Finally, a photosensitive epileptic doesn't have to be the driver to have a seizure and a passenger seizing is still dangerous.
Yay, my comment to got removed from Reddit. What I wrote was if you did something like this to me I would remove every single lights on your car if I meet you again
This shit really seemed to get bad with the influx of foreign drivers. It's like outside of the US, people have no night vision. A lot of Eastern Europeans would put led light bars on their truck and carelessly blind the shit out of everyone on the road.
Nowadays more and more 4 wheelers are running with lights that are blinding people. Often times it's pickups that get lifted but don't adjust the headlights to compensate. Or it's people that just don't give a fuck.
Police need to really crack down on this shit. It's a danger to everyone else on the road.
They need to ban white lights and go back to yellow. It destroys your night vision. However, this is like 20 times worse. It's like making a bonfire to show people that they shouldn't make camp fires. You're just doubling down on the shitty behavior.
My CDL instructor always told me, when you come up on another car who fails to turn off their high beams, you have a blind man, and a fool. If you then flash your high beams at the other car, you now have two blind fools, and they’re both driving.
Yeah, its annoying but youre literally never going to see them again, why risk causing a wreck or some unhinged person chasing you down? That said anyone that has to regularly use their high beams on the interstate shouldn't be driving. Also, I remember there were lights that were like pretty bright but not blindingly so, what happened to those?
"Hey Siri, what's the fastest way to get a citation while driving at night?"
Also, while technically it's illegal to not dim your high beams for oncoming traffic 500ft or less away and vehicles ahead of you 300ft or less away, any kind of citation written by an officer would likely be dismissed in court by the judge because current camera technology isn't good enough to prove that high beams are on vs not, and a judge would absolutely determine that an officer's 'observation' of activated high beams makes for a very weak case of them actually being on when heard in court. On the other hand, flashing high beams at someone who has their high beams on could earn you several citations(not smart.) It varies from state to state but in Wisconsin where I was born, it's Statute 347.1x. And more on that, if someone else crashes because you were flashing your high beams at them, an officer would hold you accountable for that. In the end, there's nothing you can do about it. Some people suck, that's all.
I’ve seen this many times now. I don’t even know if it’s in America.
I highly doubt it is. If someone did this in Texas they would end up in the hospital looking like human Swiss cheese by the end of the night. I don’t play the mental health chicken game anymore. There are PLENTY of people who are down to go to prison for less than this.
Yes you are. I'm right here, 15 years free but you have to under control for a min of 1 year to drive again and you can always have an episode so you mitigate possibilities. One way is avoiding specifically white strobing lights at all times. When they are being flashed in your eyes with no escape yea the dude is an ass. If your blinded by light you don't flash a 5000 lumen spot light designed to pin point the intensity at single point at them. Spot lights not only have the capability of triggering a seizure but can also blind individuals with light sensitivity especially those who have recovered from seizures. Hopefully this dick goes to jail gets his license revoked. We all hate them but I'm not going to try to murder them because i can't put my eyes on the line instead of me staring directly at them.
It’s unfortunate that people see this and get on it like, “haha yeah! Get those motherfuckers back!!” It’s mental. Tall out on those roads everyday, find peace. Shit like this only makes it worse.
I hate idiots who think they can run brights on the other side of the highway too but I think you’re just as dumb for essentially using strobes to blind people.
What the hell are these lights? They look like they aim at oncoming traffic and quick flash. Looks to be very dangerous and will certainly piss off drivers.
I told the company shop that people kept flashing their lights at me and complaining on the CB. The retards adjusted them so low that I could barely see down the highway.
Gonna hurt some feelings but if you gotta spend every night being the light nany you should reconsider driving at night. I see people flashing from far as fuck away on the oncoming side of a very divided highway. I don't care how bright headlights are, there is no fucking way the distance these people are flashing at, they are being affected.
Personally, I accept that headlights are too fucking bright now, however I don't accept having light bars, or even the idiots that drive around with fog lamps on when there is zero need for them.
How the F is that necessary. You should be fined for having steerable lights aimed at other drivers. What an asshole possibly causing others to veer off.
Some semi trucks like Cascadia have bright headlights JUST like the one you were flashing at… stop your illegal BS, you will cause a major accident by blinding a semi… idiot
I have had one idiot trucker pointing a laser at me while I was driving. I did not have my high beams on but my lights were titled up little too high. If the laser had hit my eyes, I would have gone blind. These truckers should have their CDLs taken away
I'm been searching high and low for something like this. Please point me in the right direction. I already have one tool that comes in handy, but it isn't as efficient as this.
People have gotten too reckless and careless with their hi-beams. They are intentionally keeping them on instead of being considerate
I still remember one night I was driving uphill empty and this Amazon driver was heavy trying to pass me uphill. He got angry that I was passing him and flashed one of those bright ass flashlights in my eyes.
One imagines a dot official pulling the meta data from this and laying felony assault charges against the creator. And the accident reports with dash cams showing that strobe causing serious wrecks due to blinded drivers.
It’s not my fault that you have shitty lights on your vehicle. And if you stop looking straight into them but to the right or left (depending on which side of the road you drive on) you will avoid being blinded by them. Deer in the headlights exist as a saying for a reason. I also had this issue when I drove E6 through Sweden 5/6 nights every week. I didn’t even bother to turn on my highbeams as the normal lights were as good enough. And I had them turned down from their normal driving position. Yet every night someone with poor lights on their car used their beams to make sure I turned on my highbeams. All 10 of them.
Reminds me of the million candlepower spotlight that I used to keep on the floor beside me for those drivers who want to put their high beams in your mirror after you pass them. You pick that thing up and shine it into that West Coast mirror on the passenger side and you can see them sitting back there holding the steering wheel.
I always thought having something like this would be cool. Never thought they existed. This needs to be legal. Not enough police in the world to stop the jackasses out there.
The whole problem with improper use or adjustment of headlights is that they're blinding people. This is actually attacking people and worsening an already dangerous situation. Its an issue, sure. This not the solution
Yeah I mentioned it to my boss. It has to go to Freightliner anywho to adjust my idle engine shut off timer. Will have them look at the headlights as well . (Can't adjust idle timer at company shop. )

Change the alingment. Lower them a little not a big deal to do. At least have them checked. They could be off even if the vehicle is new.
tasselledwobbegong1@reddit
OP says it’s a freightliner. Fair chance this is the solution because of the shit stuff that gets sent from their factories.

Which makes it all even more sense

Level will blind other drivers.
Level might be correct if your headlights aren't that bright, but if they are HID or LED slight down is correct.
Zanurath@reddit
Im not saying what I think it should be. The actual road requirement is even or slightly below the height of the center of the lens at 25 feet.
Responsible_CDN_Duck@reddit
Clearly it's not.
If you pull up behind a sedan your lights should not go over their trunk or hit their side mirrors
But you do it regardless.

The standard for aiming is just level with the light or lower. So the taller a vehicle is the more in blinds oncoming even with legal lighting aim.
Confident_Season1207@reddit
Sounds like you don't know how to aim headlights. They are not supposed to be level with the light source. At about 25ft, the top portion of the brightest point of the beam should be about 2" lower than the height at the headlight
Zanurath@reddit
The official legal correct adjustment is "at or slightly below the height of the center of the lens at 25 feet" so the 2 inches below sounds like an arbitrary number a company came up with to be within that parameter.
IMO it should be specific heights so that taller vehicles do not blind oncoming smaller cars but I do not make the rules.

ChopstickChad@reddit
I don't think that's patented tech, had the same feature on my '08 Mitsubishi and every car after that. Maybe it's more common in the EU?
Hard agree on the functionality and neccesity of it.
dirty_hooker@reddit
Wait. Really? I’ve heard the US has laws against having movable headlights due to some vintage car that had them unreliably tied to the steering. I’ve never seen anything like it prior to this 2020 (‘22?) Titan Pro4X.
ChopstickChad@reddit
Huh. Wow. Today I learned. Might look into it later today, I'm curious now to know how common the feature is here. I've exclusively owned hatchbacks except for one, and they've always had the feature. Fully loaded with passengers and luggage I wouldn't know how to properly aim the lights without.
Zanurath@reddit
I was thinking along the lines of semi trucks but yeah pickups have a LOT more variation in headlight angle when loading up and leveling kits especially are not great for headlight alignment. I did do aftermarket lights on my pickup when I had it which had super easy to adjust beams but it was still on the housing just easy to reach with hood open.
ftr1317@reddit
Damn, ours is 3/4 of height at 10m.
Injuredconfuseddude@reddit
It's not just that. The lights are too focused. I get blinded all the time by cars going both up and down hills.
I learned in high school why you couldn't make car lights too focused but they don't seem to care about that any more
Confident_Season1207@reddit
All lights will do that on hills.
Injuredconfuseddude@reddit
The ones with projector lenses or are otherwise hyper focused are significantly worse.
Confident_Season1207@reddit
Good projectors are actually better since the light cut off line is a lot better than a halogen reflector. If properly adjusted, they are of little issue unless you are cresting a hill or bump, which affects all light sources
HaphazardFlitBipper@reddit
I'd prefer more diffuse light, both as an oncoming driver who won't be as blinded by the beams when they do hit me, and as the first-person driver who would like to know if a deer or something is approaching from the side of the road.
Injuredconfuseddude@reddit
I'd rather catch a diffused yellow light than a super focused hard edge of a white light. Maybe yellow with projectors would be better
Confident_Season1207@reddit
You're definitely right about yellow light being better and easier on the eyes, but it doesn't look as cool as white lights. I guess at equal output, it's easier to look into the yellow light. I don't get why manufacturers all went with white lights for the headlights. If they were all yellow, even if they had higher output vs halogens, I think you would see a lot less posts about headlights
ftr1317@reddit
Imagine the same powered scattered torchlight, focused torchlight and laser from the same distance pointing at your eyes. Which one would you prefer.

adjusting the headlights on a commercial vehicle like a semi truck to aim lower than the factory-setting, in a way that causes the light pattern not to meet federal aiming specifications, can be a violation of the regulations under Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration/Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108 (FMVSS 108) / 49 CFR § 393.24 legal framework — depending on exactly how it’s adjusted and what not…
Guaranteed, I’m wrong, huh?
Confident_Season1207@reddit
Factory setting would mean properly adjusted and not blinding oncoming traffic. Nobody is saying to adjust it too low. Maybe think about it properly first
Cheekoteh@reddit
you CAN NOT touch a commercial vehicle headlights or adjust them in ANY shape or form… and if you get in an accident and lawyers find out that you touched your lights…. AND THEY WILL… good luck to you
Salt_Bus2528@reddit
Just read your own citation of the code again. You can adjust the headlights, but they need to be back in line with factory settings.
It's just a couple of set screws that control this usually. Unless your truck is very new or you've never got a pothole or bump, the lights can fall out of adjustment all on their own over time and leave you with the same ticket for being incompetent.
Cheekoteh@reddit
Bro, we are talking about commercial vehicles with lights that are already adjusted out of factory and comply with FMCSA regulations but they seem to be too bright to people such as Freightliner Cascadia.
Salt_Bus2528@reddit
I don't know how to tell you this, but someone with just as much ability to do a bad job as yourself installed those lights at the factory and they are so far removed from the buyer, at the dealership, and even further from the next guy, at the used dealership, that no amount of law quoting and spec sheet reading is going to fix a physical problem in a way that comes back to the guy assembling the vehicle.
These aren't airline mechanics putting this stuff together. It's an overworked or sometimes just careless guy with some bolt on parts and a tolerance for error that gets larger as the truck nears completion.
Cheekoteh@reddit
Every single Freightliners Cascadia has bright low beam lights. They are factory set like that.
kerberos69@reddit
So if you replace a lamp assembly, what is the last step you need to do for the truck to be roadworthy? Adjust it.
Let’s say you do a lot of off road deliveries to work sites, loggers, oil/gas fields, farms, mills, etc, and one day you notice that the passenger side lamp has bounced out of alignment with the driver side lamp. What do you do? Adjust it.
Cheekoteh@reddit
Correct and when you adjusted it to the factory setting it would look like they are too bright again. I have driven many Cascadias and I constantly get flashed at by other drivers who think I have my high beams on. It is illegal to adjust them horizontally to a setting not approved by FMCSA.
kerberos69@reddit
Cheekoteh@reddit
Go and flash someone like this idiot OP for a while and see what happens. Let’s see how chill you will be in the hospital kid.
Confident_Season1207@reddit
Yes you can adjust them if they are not at the correct setting. Nothing about what you posted says that you can't, so don't spread this wrong information
knotworkin@reddit
Most of the vehicles blinding oncoming traffic are using LED conversion bulbs in headlight fixtures that were certified for use with halogen bulbs. It is against the law to put LED bulbs into a headlight fixture that didn’t have them to begin with. Ask me how I know this.
dirty_hooker@reddit
Ah.
HaphazardFlitBipper@reddit
That's not what you said. You said it was illegal to adjust them.
HomerTheGeek@reddit
It doesn’t say don’t adjust them. It just says to meet the factory settings by aiming them lower. You are wrong
Cheekoteh@reddit
Ok good luck to you dealing with lawyers when you get in an accident… 🤣
Confident_Season1207@reddit
Nobody will have to deal with lawyers, unless they are incompetent like you and can't understand what they read
Cheekoteh@reddit
Ok whatever you say… good luck with understanding simple things around you. kid…
Confident_Season1207@reddit
Have you noticed that nobody agrees with you on this? Do you think that means you're right somehow. Go read the supposed law again you posted and actually point out the part where it says you can't adjust your headlights to spec.
Cheekoteh@reddit
More like the 5 people like you not agreeing with me? good try though…
Confident_Season1207@reddit
And you still can't prove what you posted makes you right, since there is nothing in it that says it's illegal. Can't say good try to you since normal people learn from being wrong. You just keep on pushing your wrong opinion
dirty_hooker@reddit
“Factory settings” is not where the trim screws are set. It’s where the headlights are aimed. If you were not supposed to be able to adjust them, they wouldn’t make them adjustable. You can double down on your misunderstanding or you can try to learn. Please try to learn.
karrimycele@reddit
It doesn’t say that.
karrimycele@reddit
What? Complete nonsense. The regulations state that headlamps must be adjustable (aimable). The very obvious reason for this rule is so that you can adjust them correctly.
HighwayStar71@reddit
That's why there are adjustment screws, dumbass.

AI is flat out wrong an insanely high percentage of the time. It is also designed to make you feel good so you keep using it, so it's not always going to tell you when you're wrong. HomerTheGeek@reddit
Great idea! Thanks for the tip.
Directly from ChatGPT:
Are commercial truck drivers in the United States allowed to adjust the headlights on their truck?
Good question — the short answer is: it depends on what you mean by “adjust.”
Here’s a breakdown:
✅ What Truck Drivers Can Do
Commercial truck drivers in the U.S. may make basic adjustments to their headlights — for example: • Turning the headlight aiming screws to align the beam properly (e.g., after replacing a bulb). • Adjusting headlights that are visibly misaligned due to vibration or maintenance. • Replacing bulbs or housings with OEM-approved parts.
These actions are generally permitted as long as: • The adjustment doesn’t violate Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS 108). • The lights still meet DOT-approved specifications (beam pattern, brightness, color, etc.). • The truck remains compliant with state vehicle inspection and FMCSA lighting requirements (49 CFR §393.11).
⸻
🚫 What Drivers Should Not Do
Truck drivers may not: • Modify or “upgrade” headlights with non-DOT-approved aftermarket kits (e.g., HID or LED conversions that don’t meet FMVSS 108).
⸻
🧭 In Summary • Yes: Minor aiming adjustments are fine if done correctly and within legal specs. • No: Major modifications or non-compliant changes are not allowed. • Best practice: Have a certified mechanic or company maintenance tech perform or verify headlight adjustments — especially for vehicles under DOT inspection requirements.
PraiseTalos66012@reddit
You keep saying this but you fail to cite a source. A mechanic absolutely can and should lower them if they aren't angled correctly.
cbj24@reddit
HaphazardFlitBipper@reddit
Lights that flood outwards let you see things like animals approaching the road, or the road itself if your turning.
cbj24@reddit
My headlights also physically turn to the direction you are rotating your wheel to see things while turning. VW has had that integrated into their vehicles for years.
Zanurath@reddit
Light outward to the side is exactly the thing blinding someone on the other side of the highway though.
HaphazardFlitBipper@reddit
If it's excessive... excessive light is the problem, especially towards the blue end of the spectrum.
Ideally, headlights should be heavier on the yellow, very little blue, pointed mostly forward and down, but also illuminating further ahead and to the sides at reduced intensity, but still enough to see around a corner or see something approaching the road from the side.
In short, headlights should be optimized to facilitate the driver's situational awareness while minimizing their detrimental effects on other driver's situational awareness.
Zanurath@reddit
There is laws that limit the second part but are IMO a little lax with high strong headlight beams have gotten. Biggest issue IMO is LED reflector headlights since projector usually has very good hard cut off.
Bbqandjams75@reddit
Those newer F150s have some outrageous bright lights I flash a dude because I thought it was high beams he flashed me back with some milltary grade highbeams !!
LuRkEr_ReKuL@reddit
The way a vehicle is loaded can effect headlights as well. Not so much with commercial trucks but light duty trucks and cars can be loaded too heavy in the back that the front end tips slightly up causing low beam headlights to appear as brights. There are two solutions for this. Learn to balance loads and that will solve it and a few other dangerous issues, or just turn on your high beams. This usually shoots the light beam up over the incoming traffic. The second is not perfect and does not always work.
Comfortable-Menu2099@reddit
Most pickups have a switch for heavy loads that make your low beams lower.
Mean_Farmer4616@reddit

Lies.
The beam pattern is federally regulated. That's like claiming some manufacturers don't equip vehicles with seatbelts u/HaphazardFlitBipper .
The NHTSA and IIHS both regularly test new vehicles to insure compliance.
The biggest issue is people installing non compliant headlights, or using the wrong bulbs in the wrong housing.
Drivers failing to align/re-align their headlights is the next most common issue.

Adjusting semi truck lights are against DOT regulation and a huge liability for the company and the driver… think before you comment
wickedcold@reddit
What messes people up is the sharp cut off and the very focused beam on modern LED projectors. And the brightness is the same throughout the beam, whereas on older halogen headlights it was brightest in the center and is radiated outward it would get dimmer and dimmer in a gradient.
HaphazardFlitBipper@reddit
Has it occurred to you that the federal regulations may allow too much latitude?
Some vehicles' headlights are fine from the factory. Others are blinding. All of them presumably meet the regulations. All that means is that the regulations are inadequate.
jonf00@reddit
Subaru does that. But we didn’t chose the car for its strong headlights. We are not selfish assholes. Who the hell choses a car based on headlights these days ?
HaphazardFlitBipper@reddit
Given how annoying other people's headlights can be... it will be a factor in my next buying decision. I don't want to be 'that guy'.
jonf00@reddit
Me neither, we didn’t test drive the car at night. It was a surprise for use unfortunately.
The selection of affordable non SUV 4wd family cars is slim though.
HaphazardFlitBipper@reddit
I was actually thinking that next time I go car shopping, it might be a good idea to try out being the car in front, and an oncoming car while my wife test drives it at night.
Hoping that I remember, and that it doesn't turn out to be a situation where we have to buy one on short notice.
Laffenor@reddit
None of the culprits in this video had their low beams on.
Choice_Manufacturer7@reddit
Lights are just too bright now.
The government-sponsored study also says a whopping 96% of U.K. drivers find some or most headlights too bright these days.
Nearly all drivers say headlights are too bright.
As LED headlights become standard, studies show most drivers feel dazzled by their glare. Regulators now face pressure to curb brightness without dimming road safety progress.
Before LED lights were introduced, many auto companies used halogen bulbs to light up the road, typically producing 900 to 1,000 lumens of light.
LED bulbs however produce from 3,600 to 4,500 lumens, a stark difference in lighting up obstacles in the road (including deer). The downside is that brighter lights produce more glare and make it difficult for people in other vehicles to see.
GumbysDonkey@reddit

waitforit666@reddit
if they are prone to seizures, regular cop lights could cause that, and they probably shouldnt be behind the wheel
jonf00@reddit
Photosensitive seizures are already uncommon within the small percentage of population living with epilepsy. It’s less than a percent IIRC
SycoJack@reddit
Not everyone knows, and police lights don't usually trigger seizures in those with photosensitive epilepsy. These would be much more likely to cause a seizure because they are higher intensity, higher frequency, and aimed right at the victim's face.
Finally, a photosensitive epileptic doesn't have to be the driver to have a seizure and a passenger seizing is still dangerous.
Mikey24941@reddit
Emergency vehicle lights don’t have a strobe setting. And least none of the vehicles I’ve worked in have.

The-Shartist@reddit
This shit really seemed to get bad with the influx of foreign drivers. It's like outside of the US, people have no night vision. A lot of Eastern Europeans would put led light bars on their truck and carelessly blind the shit out of everyone on the road.
Nowadays more and more 4 wheelers are running with lights that are blinding people. Often times it's pickups that get lifted but don't adjust the headlights to compensate. Or it's people that just don't give a fuck.
Police need to really crack down on this shit. It's a danger to everyone else on the road.
almondbutterthicc@reddit
They need to ban white lights and go back to yellow. It destroys your night vision. However, this is like 20 times worse. It's like making a bonfire to show people that they shouldn't make camp fires. You're just doubling down on the shitty behavior.

Some people suck, that's all.

imagine the other driver has epilepsy
Torvaun@reddit
You're not allowed to drive if you have seizures.
deadpat03@reddit
Virel_360@reddit
let’s say it’s undiagnosed, so now the same problem exists.
Captain_Wag@reddit
Well, you just got a free diagnosis.
Raddy_Chady@reddit

NikoCorleone@reddit
Fuck em
Chamber53@reddit
It’s unfortunate that people see this and get on it like, “haha yeah! Get those motherfuckers back!!” It’s mental. Tall out on those roads everyday, find peace. Shit like this only makes it worse.
Signal-Judge2950@reddit
I think you are a hero. Definitely an ass hole, but a hero none the less.
TouchMyBoomstick@reddit
I hate idiots who think they can run brights on the other side of the highway too but I think you’re just as dumb for essentially using strobes to blind people.
HappyAnimalCracker@reddit
I wouldn’t do it but I understand the sentiment.
Montreal4life@reddit
Awesome!
jrshall@reddit
What the hell are these lights? They look like they aim at oncoming traffic and quick flash. Looks to be very dangerous and will certainly piss off drivers.
captpeli@reddit
Yeah wtf is going on here?
Substantial_Steak704@reddit
Cant see fkn sht
HighwayStar71@reddit
I told the company shop that people kept flashing their lights at me and complaining on the CB. The retards adjusted them so low that I could barely see down the highway.
SeparateAd7296@reddit
So satisfying, wish I could be doing this too
GumbysDonkey@reddit
Gonna hurt some feelings but if you gotta spend every night being the light nany you should reconsider driving at night. I see people flashing from far as fuck away on the oncoming side of a very divided highway. I don't care how bright headlights are, there is no fucking way the distance these people are flashing at, they are being affected.
Personally, I accept that headlights are too fucking bright now, however I don't accept having light bars, or even the idiots that drive around with fog lamps on when there is zero need for them.
Kindly_Impress9665@reddit
Yesssss ! This makes me happy ! Glad to see someone Out there doing what we all want to!
rilloroc@reddit
Doing the Lord's work
UltraViolentNdYAG@reddit
How the F is that necessary. You should be fined for having steerable lights aimed at other drivers. What an asshole possibly causing others to veer off.
rilloroc@reddit
If they'd rather veer off than cut off their brights, that's on them
spitfireonly@reddit
Is there a 1 hour version of this?
Cheekoteh@reddit
Some semi trucks like Cascadia have bright headlights JUST like the one you were flashing at… stop your illegal BS, you will cause a major accident by blinding a semi… idiot
AnimatorSD68@reddit
I have had one idiot trucker pointing a laser at me while I was driving. I did not have my high beams on but my lights were titled up little too high. If the laser had hit my eyes, I would have gone blind. These truckers should have their CDLs taken away
Anxious_Ad909@reddit
Lol we must've ran across the same driver
Captain_Wag@reddit
Don't blind people, and you won't get blinded. If you're blinding someone sitting way up in a semi, your lights aren't too high they're WAY too high.
Glittering_Map5003@reddit
Don’t be a Bitch boy
Anxious_Ad909@reddit
I'm been searching high and low for something like this. Please point me in the right direction. I already have one tool that comes in handy, but it isn't as efficient as this.
People have gotten too reckless and careless with their hi-beams. They are intentionally keeping them on instead of being considerate
Duchess1992@reddit
Behold, the most powerful spell of all! I cast, GUN!!!
TomAterski@reddit
Need this for Atlanta. The amount of drivers driving with their brights on is crazy
Rshann_421@reddit
Auto dimming headlights are a menace as well. When passing, some switch to bright too early, blinding me from the driver side mirror.
longbongsmokehouse@reddit
I still remember one night I was driving uphill empty and this Amazon driver was heavy trying to pass me uphill. He got angry that I was passing him and flashed one of those bright ass flashlights in my eyes.
bcsublime@reddit
So effing dumb. Pay attention to the road you jackass.
Mandrillll@reddit
So instead of one blind driver, we have two. This is dangerous and not necessary.
soapu@reddit
this is like videos of people just hitting cars that do stupid shit. we all want to do it, but most of us are civilized enough to know not to

I’d also like to know where I can get a kit like that to install on my vehicle. Too many asshats that deserve that.

Trying to give truck drivers seizures?? Yeah, genius idea!
SycoJack@reddit
It's not necessary and it drastically increases the danger. Strobes, especially high power and high p
Rdy-Player-One@reddit
That is amazing. I want.
Justin_peacemaker@reddit
One imagines a dot official pulling the meta data from this and laying felony assault charges against the creator. And the accident reports with dash cams showing that strobe causing serious wrecks due to blinded drivers.
lord_nuker@reddit
It’s not my fault that you have shitty lights on your vehicle. And if you stop looking straight into them but to the right or left (depending on which side of the road you drive on) you will avoid being blinded by them. Deer in the headlights exist as a saying for a reason. I also had this issue when I drove E6 through Sweden 5/6 nights every week. I didn’t even bother to turn on my highbeams as the normal lights were as good enough. And I had them turned down from their normal driving position. Yet every night someone with poor lights on their car used their beams to make sure I turned on my highbeams. All 10 of them.
Fit_Hospital2423@reddit
Reminds me of the million candlepower spotlight that I used to keep on the floor beside me for those drivers who want to put their high beams in your mirror after you pass them. You pick that thing up and shine it into that West Coast mirror on the passenger side and you can see them sitting back there holding the steering wheel.
Mist_Wraith@reddit
better let Rhod know you found a use for one of those: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vt8aAy_8Ub4

Fuck_Reddit_Adminz@reddit
I always thought having something like this would be cool. Never thought they existed. This needs to be legal. Not enough police in the world to stop the jackasses out there.
IAMTHEBENJI@reddit
The whole problem with improper use or adjustment of headlights is that they're blinding people. This is actually attacking people and worsening an already dangerous situation. Its an issue, sure. This not the solution

Yeah I mentioned it to my boss. It has to go to Freightliner anywho to adjust my idle engine shut off timer. Will have them look at the headlights as well . (Can't adjust idle timer at company shop. )
