The Dacora, a new American luxury car startup that intends to compete with Rolls-Royce
Posted by CloudKitchen1924@reddit | WeirdWheels | View on Reddit | 414 comments
The cars are supposed to be electric and all-natural, so no polymers are used anywhere in the build. The bonnet is made from wood, which the buyer can provide themselves if they so desire. It's being made by MIT graduates and claims that when it is produced it will be revolutionary with all of its new technology. There is a $50,000 fee to get on the waitlist to buy them, and the car itself costs $500,000.

Southern_Gur_4736@reddit
The website is pure cringy marketing drivel.
The car looks like a New Beetle butchered by Mansory.

"The big question we were trying to answer... 'why's there no luxury PT Cruiser?' and we kind of worked our way back from there"
like_a_pharaoh@reddit
There actually is a luxury PT Cruiser, made by a small spanish coachbuilder called Hurtan.
moonwoolf35@reddit
Lol I don't know what I expected when I clicked that link but somehow they made the car better and worse at the same time.
KevMenc1998@reddit
Oh my God, it's adorable. If I ever hit the Powerball, I know what I want instead of a Lamborghini.
Bobandy86@reddit
I had to see what this looked like. It looks as dumb as the phrase âluxury PT Cruiserâ
Pashta_Sauce@reddit
Damn, now my eyes are Hurtan⌠terrible proportions and overall look.
KevMenc1998@reddit
Hey now, I won't tolerate any PT Cruiser slander. They're weird little cars, but the one my grandma had while I was growing up was a hard-working, reliable set of wheels. You could fold down the seats and get a shocking amount of cargo volume into that little thing. The only bad thing about it was the seats that were always rock hard.
phroug2@reddit
Fun fact, the PT Cruiser was designed by the same guy that designed the Plymoth Prowler
highpressurelow@reddit
My first car was a PT Cruiser, which we got after my grandma was forced to stop driving (dementia). Why did she get this car initially? Her initials (Pearl Theresa) matched the cars initials, and of course she HAD to have it. Loved that fucking sick whip
bannedinwv@reddit
TIL that the PT Cruiser is now itself vintage and not just retro. I am old.
obiwanmoloney@reddit
Canât imagine RollsRoyce are panicking just yet.
happystamps@reddit
"Luxury Startup" is so difficult that it may as well be an oxymoron.
It takes several manufacturing cycles to establish best practice in design and process. Mistakes cost money, and you need to spread that shit out over several decades. Startups don't make money. They don't have the runway to learn how to build luxury cars.
dirty_hooker@reddit
I used to love scrolling conceptcarz . com (or whatever it was) and seeing the multitude of ultra exotic super cars that came from an unending list of start up manufacturers. Makes me think the reason all those vehicles in the Kingâs garage are sitting because theyâre had one mechanical failure and no replacement parts.
moonwoolf35@reddit
Didn't even know this was a site and I can't wait to waste a considerable amount of time there lol
But yeah, there's a good reason why most new car companies start small with off the shelf stuff and build up from there and then eventually get to the point where they're making bespoke stuff.
trixel121@reddit
this guy ive know i think put a deposit down on an electric solar powered car
legit asked him who is he going to get to work on it? like he is not mechanically inclined.
deadpoetic333@reddit
Like a car that is only powered by the solar electricity it is able to generate? There just isnât enough surface area on a car to make that even theoretically feasible if weâre talking about a vehicle capable of highway speeds even at peak solar exposure. InsaneÂ
h_adl_ss@reddit
Aptera claims it's feasible to get 40 miles on a sunny day. It's not in production yet though so I believe it when I see it.
trixel121@reddit
i like the guy alot, but he has some opinions and uhh, life rules that will make life harder going forward
he really hates petrol engines and is trying his hardest to remove him self rom the petrol cycle.
lulaloops@reddit
Not really. Koenigsegg, Pagani, Rimac, etc.
Ooh_bees@reddit
But they are in a different bracket. They are made just for speed and performance. They are very well made with nice buttons and good materials. But on a luxury car you can't have a single squeak or rattle, the ride needs to be sublime, every toggle and hinge weighed just perfectly. And still part of it comes from the heritage for many customers. And high end performance cars are way more expensive I think? Luxury are adorable compared to the ones you mentioned.
vGrillby@reddit
It kinda is an oxymoron. Part of the luxury is having a established brand associated with wealth. It isn't just comfort or price tag, it's an idea and a status symbol.
Terrik27@reddit
Honestly the luxury part might make it possible... It takes decades to do it cost effectively at scale, but if the cars are bespoke, handcrafted, and expensive as hell you could compete in the "they only made 12 of these" supercar/ultra-luxury market. Electric drive train makes it hugely more feasible these days too.
A good engineer with a few stellar machinists/fabricators could do a niche - particularly if they were willing to use some off the shelf parts (like don't design and fabricate your own hood latches, etc.) - but they'd never be able to significantly increase production
MarcusBondi@reddit

Nicolaus Otto, Rudolf Diesel, Felix Wankel. Those are the founding fathers of internal combustion engines. Ford and RR are pretty far down the genealogy.
MurphysRazor@reddit
Ford is father of the production line.
bornblunted@reddit
This. He did invent engines, he didnât invent cars. What he did was invent a system that makes cars affordable the the everyday man.
iWasAwesome@reddit
I didn't mean to disrespect the inventors of the ICE, I purposefully said ICE vehicle because while there were many self-propelled vehicles before the ICE, RR was founded less then 20 years after the invention of the ICE, giving it some pretty substantial credibility in the vehicle sector.

Technology isn't what made Rolls Royce what it is today, it was making people think they're the best and they deserve the best. It's an ego amplification device that took decades of social manipulation with the help of endless influential people to achieve.
Good luck to them, but considering that Cadillac and Lincoln aren't even considering in the same league as BMW, Audi, and Mercedes, let alone Bentley and Rolls-Royce that's seems like a nearly impossible challenge.

wonder how they'll account for wood movement with that hood. It's a large panel that's exposed to the elements, so surely keeping that in shape is gonna be hard to design
IDKFA_IDDQD@reddit
That doesnât look like wood at all.
nedim443@reddit
Imagine the wood splinters in case of an accident.
Most environmental rich people would be in the EU, yet, this has zero chance passing EU regulation. Are then sales target countries where there is no regulation and a large population of billionares that want exclusivity? Ie, gulf arab states. But I can't imagine they GAF for environmental stuff.
This seems like nice student project but not a real company,.
I have been wrong before, so IDK.
Blanchimont@reddit
It might just be a layer of wood veneer on top of something that doesn't tend to move as much under the influence of the elements.
JohnWilliamStrutt@reddit
Wood has very low thermal expansion, so the hard part might be all the other parts expanding in the heat while the wood stays the same. Especially if sold to the obvious customer base of wealthy arabs.
In the unlikely event it ever becomes reality, I can imagine the chauffer rubbing linseed oil on the hood when he is waiting for the owner. Just like in the days of old...

More cars need to go back to old designs
rich_27@reddit
This is so much prettier than anything Rolls Royce have made in decades. This is sleek and elegant, the contours follow the drag profile and it gives it a sense of elegance and speed that is very aesthetically pleasing. There's reasons certain contours look really good to the eye and others don't, and the design language of a lot of modern cars does not seem to prioritise that, a lot instead going for a quite blocky, brutalist aesthetic. Perhaps there is an element of personal preference to it, but I think there is also a element of prioritising marketability over beauty; a Rolls like that is far more a work of art and sculpture than a commericalised product designed predominantly to extract capital from the rich.
teckers@reddit
That Rolls is a stunner, it was a 1 of 1 special bodied car, not even a 'standard' Rolls [back then there wasn't really a standard Rolls, all were coachbuilt by different companies, however many types were similar and really most were far more boring]. It was presumably hugely expensive back in the day, and was beauty regardless of cost. The modern equivalent would be those custom Ferrari they make for special customers like Eric Clapton with unique bodywork

GrynaiTaip@reddit
I'm guessing that it's specifically about plastics made from oil? There are various polymers made from plants, I guess those would be fine?
CloudKitchen1924@reddit (OP)
I guess? It's very unclear
Palimpsest0@reddit
There are solid electrolyte lithium batteries now. The electrolyte, instead of a polymer foam separator soaked in solvent, is a solid sulfate material. Itâs currently at prototype scale, and one of the companies pursuing the technology just inked a supplier deal with BMW. So, that gets rid of one main use of synthetic polymers in the batteries, but there are plenty others. Personally, Iâd like to know how they plan to insulate wires and what theyâre planning on using for circuit boards if not the usual FR4, which is epoxy polymer impregnated fiberglass. If you plan on making a polymer-free EV, batteries are just the start of things you have to worry about.
And, of course, letâs not forget that wood, being cellulose, long chain polysaccharides, held together with lignin, which itself is a phenolic polymer, is a natural polymer composite.
Din_Plug@reddit
The wires are wrapped in fabric like a century old vacuum cleaner.
Palimpsest0@reddit
Well, that certainly sounds safe. The old fashioned fabric insulated wire was usually rubberized as well, but you only see the rubberization if you cut through it. This was OK for the period, but tended to wear out and fray relatively quickly, plus suffer more rodent and insect damage than modern insulator materials, and, since it was often cotton, it could even decompose due to mold in damp climates. Overall itâs a much bigger fire hazard than modern wiring. One âsolutionâ in the 40s through 60s to these problems was to make the cloth insulation from woven asbestos, but that just trades one safety problem for another. Really the issue with polymers is that weâve gotten so inventive with them that nature doesnât have good ways to safely decompose them. The natural world is full of polymers which do break down in non-problematic ways, like wood, so really the right response is to learn from that and engineer plastics which have long service life, but a âgracefulâ and biocompatible decay process. Thereâs been some work in this area, and not all plastics are equally bad. Itâs a good idea to avoid using them where it can be avoided, but other good solutions include using less hazardous ones.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't rubber a polymer? And you know, the shit suspension bushings are made from. And the ABS light covers. And the plastic seatbelt buckles. And the rubber mounts the electric motors sit on. And the insulation on the wiring. And the fake chrome trim. And the nylon sliders for the windows.

Itâs a crazy vanity project made by a bunch of tech bros that wanted a luxury all-natural pt cruiser with a wooden bonnet, they are all delusional and think they are geniuses that can reinvent the entire automobile industry with this car. Itâs a silly, pretentious, and frivolous endeavor that will ultimately result in failure, but it looks kinda cool and is very unique

rental_car_fast@reddit
I mean not this thing, but I really do think an automaker who could build bespoke cars that actually look good could do quite well. I've been hoping to see someone new make small volume ultra luxury cars that aren't some one-of-one hypercar scam company.
Like a company that starts small and makes ~30 cars a year, similar to koenigsegg but aimed more towards comfort and styling than performance.
And the reason I hope for this is not cause I can afford something like this, I just secretly hope car design goes back to more timeless design and not the bolt-on-plastic fender boxy designs and NPCmobile crossover SUV. I think an automaker that gets super popular from classy designs could have a larger impact.

CloudKitchen1924@reddit (OP)
Yep. It's gonna be like a Zimmer or Excalibur or any of these other weird pseudo-classic luxury brands, they all depreciate like mad. The Zimmer, for example was created in the 1980's and produced until 2020, and they were anywhere from $65,000 to $400,000 new. Now you can buy the 2000's-era ones for like 11 grand and the eighties ones for 7 - 10 grand
