New build posts (BOOT LED only) but no display – MSI B550M PRO-VDH WIFI + 5600X + RX 580

Hi, first time building a PC and I’m stuck with a no-display issue even though it looks like the system is posting.
Specs:
-
CPU: Ryzen 5 5600X
-
Motherboard: MSI B550M PRO-VDH WIFI
-
GPU: RX 580 saphire nitro+ 4gb (used)
RAM: 1×8 GB Forgeon (in the recommended slot)
-MSI MAG 650BN 650W
- Cable: HDMI (works fine with my Mac through a USB-C hub)
What happens:
PC turns on, fans spin, keyboard lights come on.
MSI EZ Debug LEDs go CPU → DRAM → VGA, then stop on BOOT.
I get “no signal” / black screen on the monitor, no BIOS screen at all.
GPU fans behavior is a bit random:
-
Sometimes they spin up, stop, then later go full speed and stay there.
-
Sometimes they just go full speed right away.
I’ve learned that GPU fans spinning in BIOS can be normal, so I’m less worried about that part.
(yes, the hdmi cable is connected to the gpu, not on the motherboard)
The bigger issue is: I never see any image.
Why I think it’s actually posting
- Keyboard works: Num Lock toggles, and Ctrl+Alt+Delete will reboot the PC.
If I spam Del while it’s booting:
-
The shutdown behavior changes. In that case, I need to hold the case power button for 3–4 seconds to force it off.
-
If I don’t press Del, a short press on the power button shuts it off more quickly.
Only the BOOT debug LED stays on in the end. CPU / DRAM / VGA all seem to pass.
This makes me think the board is successfully POSTing and probably sitting in BIOS, I just can’t see anything on the screen.
What I’ve already checked / tried:
24-pin and 8-pin CPU power cables are seated properly.
PCIe 6+2 power cable is connected to the RX 580 8-pin (I’ve double-checked it’s the PCI-E cable, not CPU/EPS).
GPU is fully seated in the top PCIe slot and screwed to the case.
RAM reseated and placed in the correct slot.
Keyboard clearly works (Num Lock, Ctrl+Alt+Del).
HDMI cable works with my Mac (through a hub).
CMOS removed (2+ hours)
BIOS updated to latest non-beta version
I haven’t yet:
Tried a different HDMI / DisplayPort cable directly
Tried another monitor.
Can you guys help me to identify the problems, currently i am waiting for my display port order to arrive to make sure that the problem is just the cable.

most likely culprit is the storage/boot device, also, just to be clear, you can't enter bios, or does your screen doesn't show anything?

Screen doesnt show anything. Sorry for not clarifying I just want to get into bios first, before installing windows with my usb.

Do you have another gpu or another monitor/tv to test on?
longthbm111@reddit (OP)
My friends will bring his gtx 1050 card and his monitor to test out tmr, at this point i think the gpu is the problem, and dp cable didnt work either :(
Grubbador4000@reddit
To be honest, I don't think the gpu is the problem, since it passes the vga part in post, and stops at boot, which is a telling sign of something wrong with the boot drive

Thanks a lot for the help so far!
Quick update: I’ve tried a different monitor and cable and still get no signal, but I haven’t been able to test with another GPU yet. I’m wondering: should the BIOS (or at least something on screen) appear even if there’s no SSD or no Windows installer USB plugged in? My main problem is really just the lack of display. When I plug in my Windows installer USB, the BOOT LED actually turns off, but I still get no image. Also, can a GPU still have its fans spinning and the Sapphire logo lit up even if the card is basically dead?
It’s been pretty stressful not getting this to work for two days, so any ideas are really appreciated.

it's possible, or what may have happened is the hdmi/dpi ports are either dead (un likely that all of them are dead) or that a resistor or a electrical component that's connecting the gpu die to the ports may have popped

Thanks for your answer ! I did try all ports, include 2 hdmi and 2 display port, and none seem to works either :( I will update you when i try with different gpu, right now I just hope the gpu is dead ngl.
