Just bought this 1985 Toyota Celica GT hatchback for $600. It currently runs and drives, all the gears work, every light works. Definitely needs valve cover gasket and I gotta solve its overheating issue. Not gonna warp the head or blow the headgasket

5 speed manual, 4 cylinder 22RE motor, RWD. Pretty cool car. Initial Discount 😎

i’m willing to bet the overheating issue has already warped the head, hence the leaking valve cover gasket. but that’s a sick project 🤙 congrats on rescuing a beauty
DavidSpy@reddit
It’s the head gasket that typically fails due to overheating. The valve cover gasket is leaking because the car is 40 years old

ok

brother my 20 year old vcg was leaking because it's old and brittle
5 year old vcg's at the shop i work at are leaking bc they're shit products

Right? I guess my 83 ranger's valve cover must have started leaking because the head's warped. Definitely not because it was hard as a rock and was coming apart in chunks. What a dope lol

bro I took off my old valve cover gasket and it literally broke into pieces in my hand while I was taking it off ðŸ˜
but yea the head is 100% warped that's why it's leaking

You don’t have to get upset when proven wrong
FalseRelease4@reddit
yeah it might just need a thermostat and new coolant, but it also might have been parked because they cooked the engine at one point

That interior … maybe start with a leaf blower.

Neat. I have a 1984 GT-S convertible in red - it shines, but has a teeny bit of body damage in the rear that I never bothered fixing where a previous owner blew out a tire and it slapped the quarter panel behind the tire. Got new fender flares and everything, since the one is cracked, just never took it to the shop and spent the money. Also needs a top, but it doesn’t go as easily as a Miata, and I was going to let the body shop (or classic car shop with experience) handle it too whenever I got around to taking it somewhere and spending the money. It’s on hand too lol. Car just stays in a garage all the time so I never worried about it.
Anyway, around 140k miles here, and that 22RE starts up every time no matter how long it’s been since I started it last, and usually is the quickest engine to fire and run out of everything I own. Multiple Hondas, Mazdas, a Chevy pickup, they all turn over several times and then fire. That fucking Celica fires on the first 360 degree rotation of the engine, I swear.
Never thought to ask in a group like this but I doubt my comment will be seen anyway - I don’t see any of these old Celicas, ever, but has anyone here ever seen one of the handful of convertibles (in person) that exist?

I drove one of these in high school. Super fun. I loved driving it until I wanted an SUV
Bobatt@reddit
Yeah, we had one of these as a shop car at the garage I worked at in high school. The rear drive was great for doing doughnuts on icy mornings.
Nakiwaii@reddit
so you went from having taste to having none of it, lol

I think I wanted bigger speaker boxes at the time lol

I think the timing chain and tensioners are junk.

Mannnnn, I want one of these so bad. Nice one OP

Had to be quick to snag it. Drove 6 ½ hours one way to him then towed it maybe 8 hours home (slower speeds ofc).

One of the last proper Celicas! That 22re is a workhorse too!

0/ to a fellow bmss fan, great find

Totally not jealous about the fact that y’all motherfuckers can find cars for so cheap, nevermind a running one
RaiseOurAxesToTheSky@reddit (OP)
Just be willing to drive 13 hours bruh. It was about 6 ½ hours to get to this guy's small town, I put the car on a dolly and towed it with my pickup truck another 6 ½ hours home. With gas and renting the dolly it was more like $900 total. Still amazing. Especially since the dude first wanted $1000 for the car.

Om606 turbo diesel swap it. You'd be surprised how well it would fit

That’s the tits!

That 22RE was the standard of reliability back in the day. That car is a win any day of the week.

Nice deal is running. lol
RaiseOurAxesToTheSky@reddit (OP)
Yeeeeeep. Runs and drives, all the gears work
pistonsoffury@reddit
Looks like you have complete-age. Give it a good scrub inside and out and post some progress pics!

I'd remove the thermostat until you get any other cooling issues sorted out.
TotalmenteMati@reddit
Celicas always were more expensive and better cars than the corollas, before initial D came along they were more desirable

bmw e38 radiator just about fits and comes with an oil cooler core
