Why do people do this??
Posted by Tomokomon@reddit | Truckers | View on Reddit | 298 comments
due to my truck being governed I pretty much stay in the right lane all the time. so naturally I am frequently dealing with slow mergers. Why do people merge 15mpg slower than the rest of traffic??
Do they not realize if they just stepped on the gas they could merge safely and without cutting people off?
Signal-Judge2950@reddit
In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, I was on the interstate, and there is a little miata getting ready to try and merge holding her phone with her left shoulder and her right hand on the stick shift. She tried to go right under my trailer till I started blasting my horn. She ended up dropping the phone locking up the brakes and bumped into the guardrail.
Top-Confidence4496@reddit
Then they stay slow so you change lanes to get shiny around them. The minute you start passing them they floor it
firemarshalbill316@reddit
Boy, this shit really pisses me off. I usually have time to move over so they can merge but I'll ride the reflectors on their side if any and turn my right blinker on like I'm getting back over just to scare the shit out of them.
I think most people really don't know how to merge with traffic. Literally the only time you can speed and aggressively accelerate without the cops busting your balls.
ValuableShoulder5059@reddit
Except those that do could have merged better in most cases by slowing down instead
PlymouthSea@reddit
They're supposed to merge behind thru traffic anyway. Thru traffic has the right of way and the merging lane must yield.
ValuableShoulder5059@reddit
Yes, which is done by speeding up or slowing down.
Signal-Judge2950@reddit
Oh there's the gas pedal!
PlymouthSea@reddit
BMWs every time. They are hammer down everywhere but the onramp merge lane.
Levenrack@reddit
Artifice!!
GamerGal6@reddit
So... I'm going to admit this has been me many times 😅 it only seems to happen when I'm on long stretches of a road trip and for some reason don't have cruise on. If someone is passing me I have a tendency to check my speed, and if I realize that I'm going under the speed I meant to be going I have a little "oh shit" moment and speed up. Obviously this isn't the reason every driver does it. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if most people did it to be petty or bc they take exception to being passed, but for me at least it has way less to do with the person passing me and more to do with the fact that I was just zoned out and cruising (which I shouldn't be, but I'd be lying if I said I never did that).
greedybanker3@reddit
its why i ride the middle lane.
KoiwazuraiAi@reddit
Day cab drivers are notorious for this. I move over to let them in then they want to ride next to me instead of letting me back in the lane.

THIS
PlymouthSea@reddit
They don't know the basic rules of the road. That's why.
They clearly aren't teaching or assessing right of way laws for non-commercial. Thru traffic has the right of way and merging traffic must yield whether there is an explicit yield sign or not. Non-commercial drivers should have to meet the same level of driving proficiency as a non-CDL DOT driver going through JJ Keller. Closed course + road test assessment. If we have to be on the road with them they should have some level of competency. If only DOT could do more non-commercial enforcement and do a blitz week on the onramps specifically for non-commercial driver safety, just lighting people up for reckless merges.
I have a story about this in SoCal working last mile. I was about to get an RSI during blitz week one year driving south on the I-5 towards my first stop. Was already getting ready to pull over but the roadwork construction had no shoulders so they didn't have their lights on yet. Then on a shortened onramp (due to said construction work) a knight in shining armor did an unsafe merge right in front of the incognito DOT car behind me. It was one of those blacked out sedans with the lights built into the front fender/grill and no lightbars on the roof so you can't notice them at a glance in your mirrors. As far as I know this is a California DOT/CHP specific thing. They lit him up instead of me because of how badly he cut them off. Pretty thankful for it because my ABS light came on about 10 minutes after I got on the freeway and that was one of the things they were looking for that blitz week.
madmuthertrucker@reddit
What kills me is as soon as they slow you they hammer the gas.
Dabisk09@reddit
Ain’t no way Schneider or Werner ever going above 65mph lol
TruckerBiscuit@reddit
Watch out buddy! Someones going to tell you scientists have studied it and making a CMV slam on his brakes because a four-wheeler can't use his accelerator is the most efficient way to handle merging. 🤣
Rubes2525@reddit
"It's called a zipper merge and you are a small dick loser if you don't let them in." 🤓
PlymouthSea@reddit
The response to that retardation is to remind them that thru traffic has the right of way. Merging lanes must yield.
The-Shartist@reddit
Wouldn't be surprised nowadays. It would be written by some nerd that drives a Prius and has an emotional support labradoodle because driving gives him anxiety.
Few-Chemical-5165@reddit
There's also some drivers out there. Who don't want to waste gas?So they don't want to accelerate hard. That's just a guess mind you? But that's one of the things I think, is the reason. But after 31 years on the road, around 1518 years ago I just decided to hell with them. If they can't get up to speed and get in front of me, i'm not slowing down, i'm not moving over even if I could. And legally, you don't have to, you just maintain your speed And lane that's your job. The try to tell them that when they flip you the number one sign.
Advanced-Sherbert-29@reddit
I think if every entrance ramp posted the speed limit right there it would discourage this behavior. At least a bit.
Individual_fire1328@reddit
Because people are mouth breathing idiots
SOROKAMOKA@reddit
In all fairness, somwtimes the on ramps are too short to get up to speed. Especially for a fully loaded semi
Creative-Mud-7930@reddit
Right, but if the on ramp is not long enough wouldn't the speed limit be reduced? A lot of older highways have 55 MPH because the on ramps are too short.
My personal feelings are that people do not know how to drive. I would be in favor of more driver education for people in cars.
In countries with driver education, for example Germany, the deaths per 100, 000 is 3.9, in the United States it is about 12.4. We are 3 times higher.
Tomokomon@reddit (OP)
You're correct. The overwhelming majority of the time the reason people feel like they can't get up to speed is because they didn't start accelerating far too late. the second you hit that ramp you need to be speeding up as quickly as you safely can. Most people slowly ride it out until the last 20-30% of the ramp then try and speed up and get mad when people don't let them in
SOROKAMOKA@reddit
The problem with US interstates is that they are not standardized. Every state does their own thing and builds them different. Ive seen highways with no acceleration lane but built to merge at high speeds. And even at 55mph speed limit, a fully loaded truck can take a long time to reach that speed, and if going uphill its literally impossible.
forgotmyreddit1991@reddit
I used to get very triggered at this but really man….people are just absolutely clueless and this will never change.
No_Table_259@reddit
Because they're idiots or trying to kill people, or both.
joelhagraphy@reddit
Why are you not going 55? Here in California that's the fastest we can go

J0nn_D03@reddit
It's crazy how many people didn't pay attention in freaking driving school and still got a license. No one but us professionals seems to know how to merge
Gandlerian@reddit
Distracted drivers, anxious drivers, unsure drivers, drunk divers, probably many other reasons as well? Your guess is as good as mine.
SteppenAxolotl@reddit
The world revolves around what i want and when I want it.
AllHailThePig@reddit
That's a lot of them yes but there are a tonne of people who aren't at all selfish in that particular way who are instead just completely anxious behind the wheel. Perhaps we could say they're actually also very selfish since they could at least go get some defensive driving lessons and maybe even some therapy to make them better motorists for all of us on the roads.
Either way the amount of people I know who are horrible to be in the passenger seat of, that make the most bizarre decisions due to being anxious behind the wheel is crazy.
People who aren't confident motorists are so dangerous. They often delay making a move that is perfectly acceptable that is part of the regular flow of traffic and instead due to pausing for much too long make a final erratic move that is dangerous.
Also, I kid you not. Some friends of mine were passengers of a guy we knew one time a couple years back. They were coming up to a set of traffic lights and the dude who was driving was distracted in the conversation they were having. Guy isn't a confident driver at all but the move he made here is beyond baffling.
Luckily this intersection wasn't the busiest because due to his distraction he somehow missed the light that was turning red and ran it and no cars t-boned them.
But this isn't the baffling part. That was just a careless mistake. When the passengers pointed out that he was about to run a red, his instinct wasn't to immediately evaluate the situation and then decide what defensive maneuvers he might need to make if he was unable to stop in time due to his speed.
Instead as soon as he was reaching the lights he let go of the wheel and put BOTH hands over his face, covering his eyes as he ran the red and drove through the intersection. They reckon he might've also been able to make a stop a bit further over the line but still be in a much more safe position against the oncoming traffic from horizontal lanes.
Even if he wasn't able to react in time to make a stop, he didn't do anything to try and prevent a crash while crossing the intersection. Literally tried to let God take the wheel. They had to yell at him to put his hands back on the wheel as our friend in shotgun took the wheel with one hand through the intersection.
Again. Luckily they were unscathed but that is just incomprehensible levels of incompetence not to mention dangerous.
Even though that is an extreme example, anxious motorists can be dangerous due to their over caution and lack of skills or just inability to react in certain, even common, situations. Freezing up is an especially dangerous move they often make. We all see it all the time.
J0nn_D03@reddit
If they're the type to freeze up they shouldn't be driving lol. That's buck wild man, sorry you went through that.
Amazing-Mammoth-8442@reddit
Many states not having any or a quality drivers education program is the biggest problem, second to distraction.
SkeetDweetDm@reddit
the only ones i’m not upset about are the ones where you can tell pushing their car is risky. i personally won’t make mine gain speed very quickly on my daily because my transmission is going out and it’ll start hard shifting. i give shitboxes a pass. anyone else gets piss bombs
No-Albatross6529@reddit
You should find an alternate route boss
ChrisTheMan72@reddit
If you can’t push car to highway speeds in time then maybe you should not be going on the highway. lmao!!!
SkeetDweetDm@reddit
i can get my car to 80 or 90 but i let have to let it naturally get up there slowly. i don’t push my car above 4000rpm really not much over 3000. so it takes some more time to build speed.
seang239@reddit
When mine gets to 2500-3000rpm I can ease up on the gas a bit and it’ll go ahead and shift into the next higher gear. Then I can push it back down a bit and it’ll accelerate faster than if I just held it where it was before.
SkeetDweetDm@reddit
to add to this most highways around me trucks are going 65-75 on average.
Jacktheforkie@reddit
Even on the short slip lanes near me I can easily hit at least 56, which means I can easily outpace all the trucks
ChrisTheMan72@reddit
Good job! Then sound like you belong on the freeway. I’m talking about people who roll on at 45
MajorAdvice3283@reddit
They were paying attention well enough to get on to the freeway. The least they can do is get up to proper speed before they merge.
Grizabelle1999@reddit
Might be someone used to metered onramps... We still have some of those in Houston and they drive me crazy... Im trying to get up to speed but at the END of the onramp the light turns red so I have to freaking stop and then I have next to no room to accelerate into traffic in my Hybrid car with no get up and go.

jacklesight@reddit
Run their ass to the grass. I don’t really have many things to set off road rage, but this is one. It happens too often. They don’t want to hit the gas pedal to take the spot in front of you or hit their breaks and get behind you, they want the literal spot you’re in. If I can move over, generally I do, but if not I’ve just gotten to the point where I’ll literally run them into the dirt. People are just incredibly ignorant about the highway.
Fun fact I bet you didn’t know. It’s technically illegal for non commercial vehicles to be on the interstate. By law, the interstate is for trade between the states and, if they wanted to, could put everyone on the highway without a CDL in jail.
myrustsippinsyrup@reddit
Bro really said “technically illegal for cars to be on the interstate” like he just uncovered a government secret. Hate to break it to you, but the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 literally created the Interstate System for public transportation — that includes commercial and private vehicles. There’s not a single federal or state statute banning non-commercial traffic.
The “interstate commerce” part you’re thinking of defines what kind of trade happens across states, not who can drive on the road. FMCSA regs only apply to commercial motor vehicles, not your grandma’s Corolla.
So unless you think the DOT’s been running a 70-year-long felony cover-up for every Honda Civic, maybe ease up on the conspiracy law lectures.
Square-Imagination14@reddit
The funniest part of this is the idea of Schneider doing 72MPH or Warner doing 75MPH.
I could smoke both of them at CRST and they only do 68MPH

What I do now is I wait and to swerve left right left right in the on ramp I'm going like 25 35mph coasting waiting for the dumbass car in front of me to get ready to cut off people going 85mph while they barely get to 50mph. Once it does I pedal to the medal and get always to 76mph 82mph and merge over. It's been a thing that people in my city town posted on the Facebook page about and now everyone is starting to do it. It's because here we have a huge aging boomer population and young drivers scared and unskilled they don't know how dangerous it is to merge going slower than highway speeds

One time I was drinking past an on ramp with a mini van clearly ahead of me. I was expecting the driver to merge with enough room in front of me to slow down to their pace and speed back up. Instead they came to A COMPLETE STOP on the end of the on ramp and held 3 cars up behind them. I luckily was able to drive by without even changing lanes since they had not actually entered the interstate. I couldn’t help but look back though. To this day I don’t understand it. Plenty of room and time but just backed out at last minute.
jrshall@reddit
Had that once in Charleston while on vacation in my old underpowered motorhome. Car in front of me stops at the end of the on ramp. It took forever for me to find a big enough space to safely merge on freeway from a full stop.

My favorite is when they have plenty of time to see me coming and then perfectly match my speed to try and merge. Then when I dont move over, they get behind me, then magically speed up, use the middle lane, cut in front of me, and brake check me while angrily giving me the finger. Sounds oddly specific, but its happened multiple times.
It's getting worse out there. I have somewhat convinced myself that Im not doing my job right unless I get the finger (from a 4 wheeler) at least once a day.

Brilliant_Sound2596@reddit
Do you not realize that if you just took your foot off the gas, you could be considered a considerate driver?
You’re governed. You’re a slow truck anyway.
You can see that there’s traffic merging from your right, many, many seconds, ahead of time. You can see cars coming onto the ramp. You should be able to estimate their speed and read their flashing signals.
You know there are trucks next to you.
Be considerate enough to adjust to the flow of traffic, by letting off the accelerator, and allowing cars to merge.
This is not NASCAR.
Your complaint is a complaint of the inexperienced and stubborn. You also sound like you have no chill.
ComprehensiveDark814@reddit
That just makes the car slow down even more.
Brilliant_Sound2596@reddit
Yeah. You go slow in the cities. You vary your speed. You adjust to accommodate. To avoid accidents.
If you feel the need to drive unsafely because your employer isn’t paying you enough, you need to look for a different employer.
ComprehensiveDark814@reddit
I think you're confusing me with someone else.
Brilliant_Sound2596@reddit
I’m talking to you, because you’re defending speeding through the cities and defending it
Tomokomon@reddit (OP)
The original image doesn't show the truck being cut off as speeding. It's dong 5 under the limit.
ComprehensiveDark814@reddit
No, I'm saying slowing down for cars in the ramp only makes them hit their brakes. Which makes you hit your brakes. Which makes them hit their brakes even harder.
Nobody is speeding through cities. That's just something you made up to convince yourself you're right.
Brilliant_Sound2596@reddit
I am right, though.
Brilliant_Sound2596@reddit
I’m not sure you even drive, at all. Because what you’re saying, here, is not what happens on a merge ramp. Cars speed up on the ramp to match the speed of the traffic on the highway to merge.
If a truck slows down in the right lane, it allows the merging car to enter traffic.
Unique_Arm435@reddit
Do you realize we drive 700 miles a day? Taking our foot off the gas will have us backing up! Stfu
Brilliant_Sound2596@reddit
lol now you’re just trolling. If you’re driving 700 miles a day, as a company driver, you’re a loser.
Tomokomon@reddit (OP)
It's different if they are already infront of me going slow but merging in front of me going that slow can cause an accident
I always try and move over when I can. But I'm not going to slow down for every single onramp
This isn't an isolated incident. It happens constantly in and around cities. I don't have time to play that game
their car is significantly faster than my truck. They have no excuse for being a slow merger
Brilliant_Sound2596@reddit
“This isn’t an isolated incident. It happens constantly in and around cities”
Yeah. Exactly.
Yeah, you do have to slow down in cities to accommodate the merging traffic. Every on-ramp. Yes you do.
You shouldn’t even be going 65 in that traffic situation, in a city center. You should be going about 55, being very responsive to the speed of the lanes around you.
Your complaint shows that you are a negligent, aggressive driver.
Tomokomon@reddit (OP)
If I'm not moving I'm not earning money
If I was getting $35 an hour I would play that courteous driver game all day lol
Brilliant_Sound2596@reddit
I’m an owner-op. I have a truck payment.
Your mentality on driving is a bad one.
You’re not getting paid if you willfully contribute to an accident situation where you hit a slow moving vehicle from behind because you were too stubborn to take your foot off the accelerator to allow them to merge.
You get in an accident, that’s points on your license. You get into an accident and kill someone because you refused to take your foot off the accelerator, or tap your breaks to adjust your speed - YOU are going to Federal Prison.
Then you come to Reddit, trying to find other terrible drivers to validate your bad driving mentality.
Tomokomon@reddit (OP)
You seem to think I would deliberately hit someone
If they merge in front I will brake. always.
I'm saying it's annoying. And that the merging traffic bears the responsibility of matching the flow of traffic to the best of their abilities.
You're being overly dramatic
Brilliant_Sound2596@reddit
You’re driving too fast and not adjusting speed to the lanes next to you. You should never allow a semi-truck, much less two of them to block your space cushion. That’s extremely irresponsible. How long were both of those trucks blocking your cushion? Did you not notice that there was an on-ramp? That’s negligence.
spartanantler@reddit
Do you not realize I’m not legally obligated to move over?
Brilliant_Sound2596@reddit
You’re legally obligated to avoid an accident.
Your attitude is the reason why my insurance is so high.

people feel like their the loser if they pull in behind you, so they rush to get in front, then slow you down
Gweedo1967@reddit

Tomokomon@reddit (OP)

quick can do 65 with cruise control
Gweedo1967@reddit
Yeah but you can’t hold up three lanes of traffic going different speeds.
Mista_Tee@reddit
Simple answer. People can’t drive, refuse to accept that they lack the skills to drive safely/properly, they’ve chucked the rules of the road out of the window years ago, and there are very few states where the state police enforce said rules of the road (mainly slower traffic keep right). It’s just easier for shitty drivers to blame everyone else, and hire a shitty lawyer to sue drivers of larger vehicles, for their incompetence.
MastrChang@reddit
So annoying, and as soon as you slow down they zoom off at like 90.
Hillyard61@reddit
Suicidal morons.
Dead_Namer@reddit
The main reason is they get cut up by other truckers refusing to let them on, the same truckers usually complain they join to slow.
In the UK everyone is up to the speed limit and the ones on the road slow or speed up or change lanes to let everyone on.
The whole merging process stops working when you have arseholes refusing to do that.

The Schneider driver is the problem he's been holding that middle lane for miles forcing everyone to pass him on both sides .the driver on the left finally said fuck it I'm passing you in the slow lane you fucking idiotic Schneider driver also you're supposed to merge away from the on ramp to let others on but once agan that dumb ass Schneider driver is hogging the middle lane

Is it too much to ask DOT for them to put a sign up that says "Yield at highway speeds, hwy traffic has right of way". That way there's no confusion and less accidents.
NixAName@reddit
Dumb fucks everywhere.
PowerWagonOverlander@reddit
Oh boy, this is every car every day in OKC 😂 Also 53 would be nice, unfortunately the normal merge speed here is 40mph. I feel bad for the truckers who have to go through here.
AtticusDutch@reddit
Stupidity.
Entitlement also falls into that because they are stupid enough to believe they're more important.
Also, I truly believe there's a portion of the population (higher than we realize) who get their rocks off by intentionally inconveniencing those around them (retail workers, other drivers, etc)
pkenny72@reddit
Because they are whores! I hate slow mergers. Also, I hate when people are driving, and when I pass them, they are holding onto their phones talking. Like they have it on speaker phone.
Today was awful, between people on their phone, the rain, and the normal dumbasses, today sucked.
CycleCaverns@reddit
Sometimes the ramps/ entrances don't give ample time to reach the speed limit. I recommend adjusting your speed to the oncoming situation instead of expecting people to reach the intended speed needed to safely merge every time you are nearing a freeway entrance.
Tomokomon@reddit (OP)
That's fair. But in most situations I feel they have more than ample enough time to actually hit the correct speed
CycleCaverns@reddit
Oh yeah, of course they do most of the time. Like I said above, people do this stuff to me when I am in a sedan too. Low IQ drivers out there make it harder for those of us who are trained to be safe on the road.
Elite_Slacker@reddit
Earlier today someone paced me all the way to the end of a very long merge with open views then drove on the shoulder blaring their horn.
CycleCaverns@reddit
Probably not even your fault. People do that shit to me when I'm driving a sedan and there are 3 cats in my left lane. I have to react because no one else is. Like some people just don't have a clue.
Unique_Arm435@reddit
Doesn't matter what YOU recommend. Learn the correct way.
tinachem@reddit

SHOwSHOrTAge@reddit
You don't understand, they HAVE to be ahead of you!! If they have to be behind a semi for literally the three seconds it takes to merge to the other lane, their heads will explode and they'll die!!!!!
RomanMaroney@reddit
There's only 1 rule: Get in front of the truck. And they all follow it no matter what. If there's no one in front of them and no one behind them, they have to change lanes to get out of that death trap and get right in front of that truck going down that hill in the rain. And don't worry, the first thing they'll do after changing lanes is immediately let off the gas to slow down at least 5mph for 1/2 mile before then returning the speed they were originally going.
McBurger@reddit
Inaccurate diagram
It shows the car used most of the full acceleration lane before getting over
No, no, no.
Everyone knows on highway, as soon as possible, even on solid white line, you merge in first, and then slowly get up to speed second. Let that on ramp expire for the next half mile empty to your right
Slarem@reddit
They do it all the time. The DMV says people may let you in but aren’t required to. That is because they must adjust to the flow of traffic yet they always seem to hold it up instead of

This is my old diesel sedan on a slight uphill on ramp. Sorry btw, and yes it's floored in 3rd gear.
DixieNormus369@reddit
Your diagram is wrong.. ain’t no Werner truck doing 75 🤣
nospmiSca@reddit
The ramp is not long enough to get too proper speed without me revving my engine, I am not waisting fuel accelerating fast you can slow down.
Remarkable_Film_1911@reddit
Then stop driving, 100% fuel saving. Do what's safe and match the flow.
It's also fun with a sports car or motorcycle, especially manual to power shift.
nospmiSca@reddit

skeletons_asshole@reddit
Half the cars that do this to me are just openly on their phone. They seem to merge while staring down, look around, realize they could be going faster, speed up, and look back down.

WTH !? Schneider can do 72 and Werner (Weiner) 75 !? Wow .. can y’all get PRIME to do at least 65 ? Asking for a friend

As bad as driver education is these days, maybe installing some signs on on-ramps would help? Something like “HIT THE FUCKING GAS PEDAL”
Anxious_Ad909@reddit
Let's also ask why Werner was doing 62 the entire time then only started going 75 because he saw you needed to get over. Werner and Super Ego have too many clowns driving for them

I've stopped letting off the gas or moving over unless absolutely necessary to avoid collision. It's their responsibility to merge safely at highway speeds. Not mine to let them in. I will blow the horn and let you run yourself onto the shoulder.
Unique_Arm435@reddit
Me, too! I look at em in the right mirror so they know I sees em and yet...🤷♀️🖕
Outrageous_Law8210@reddit
Basically the same but I will brake if I absolutely have to and avoid the horns it just makes them even more stupid.
Law says if they hit me it's their fault if I change lanes and hit something it's now my fault
Biscuit964@reddit
The way I was always taught, when you’re merging onto the interstate, you speed up at least the speed limit before merging, you look at the lane and determine if you’re merging in behind a car or in front of it and you look at the left lane to see if that car can get over. They should get over if they can and let you in but the whole idea is that you should be going to speed limit by the time you hit the driving lane.
Unique_Arm435@reddit
This is the way!
LucHighwalker@reddit
The most unrealistic part of this is that wiener and Schneider are going over 70.
Tomokomon@reddit (OP)

Unique_Arm435@reddit

Robjla@reddit
getting your truck governor removed is the best feeling ever. You can slow down and let people in because you don’t have to keep the hammer down the whole time because you are slow. I was 72 for like a year. Didn’t want to go to Volvo and lose a day. Figured out they can do it over the air on a phone call. Messed with it a little I settled on 74 pedal 80 cruise. Everywhere I go is 70 a little 65 rare 75. 80s I stay 77 max. I set the cruise to 77 and use the button as a push to pass. Zoom by trucks and release. The ones who would normally speed up like dicks see my fury and give up
Murky-League7118@reddit
Ive told anyone who'll listen, which is close to zero, that if youre a 4 wheeler merging with a truck in the lane you're attempting to merge, you have two choices, and they're both at your feet, and you should make those choices quickly.
Ayasdad@reddit
Put a car in the guardrail in Salem mass once for this. Just kept pacing me and ran out of room and I guess didn't think to touch the brake. Didn't hit me so I just kept rolling. They had plenty of room to slow down and merge behind me. I'll never understand how people seriously think we're supposed to yield to the ramp. Like what am I supposed to do? Slam my brakes and roll out the red carpet?
TrickNo9593@reddit
So far honking at them tends to get them going
scubaorbit@reddit
There used to be a cure for stupidity. Was called natural selection. But then we started protecting the dumb. So now they are multiplying.
swigginwhiskey@reddit
No no no. They don't do that. Since when have you seen a 4 wheeler use an entire merge lane? Thet get in front of you within 5 seconds of getting to those dashed lines, regardless if their merge lane is 1000ft or half a mile.
indytrucks@reddit

They let retarded people get licenses. True story. Unlike Europe, our drivers are taught to do the basics. That's it! There is no courtesy, there is no common sense. Can you parallel park? Congratulations, you get a license! There is no 'if you play chicken with an 80,000 pound missile, you will lose! 100% of the time..' So without the knowledge that 70-80% of everything they own got delivered by a truck, they're more worried about us being big, heavy, and slow.
Neowynd101262@reddit
Sometimes the lane isn't long enough to reach 70. I don't think anyone should have to hit 8000 rpm to merge.
Tomokomon@reddit (OP)
My brother in Christ it's not that insane. You're talking about maybe 5% of onramps. The overwhelming majority of onramps are more than enough. If I can hit highway speeds with my truck before hitting the interstate then those cars damn sure have zero excuse and you can't convince me otherwise
John9250@reddit
I’ve noticed a lot don’t even look when they’re merging. They also like to merge at 40mph and then when you’ve slowed down and they’re in the travel lane, they punch it to 90
pattop@reddit
I think your stress level and bp get better if you just accept that things like this will happen. You are always going to have annoying drivers. Sometimes you will be the annoying driver. I try to stop myself and tell myself is being irritated going to change that driver right now. No, of course not. And it helps me to relax
Lopsided_Beautiful_1@reddit
Schneider would be governed at 65 mph, above 72 like that would be a critical event for over speeding and a heart attack from Schneider and a call from safety and then after the driver team leader.
MiKapo@reddit
because people suck at merging into traffic
Gilgamesh2000000@reddit
If it’s heavy slow traffic is the only time I understand doing that.
Truckingwithpurpose@reddit
Werner is governed to 68 mph and Schneiders max speed is 65 not only that those 4 wheelers should YIELD to oncoming traffic it’s more of a hazard for trucks to try and stop on a dime smh
SafariJim@reddit

Atypical_Mammal@reddit
Some people have this wrong idea that " driving safe means doing everything slow and gradually. Flooring the gas pedal is dangerous and reckless."
And so they end up only using 30% of their car's acceleration capability and getting in everybody's way
homucifer666@reddit
I rev it out and dump the clutch on on-ramps, when I'm not driving the truck that is.
Tomokomon@reddit (OP)
Exactly. Merging onto the highway is one of the few times you can actually get on the gas and speed if only to merge safely. Too many people think slow is safe which can lead to an accident just as easily as driving way too fast.
Dependent-Analyst907@reddit
I assume that is because they want me to run them off the road.
MacinTez@reddit
I don’t like to merge in front of 18 wheelers, for the sake of me being able to switch lanes ( it’s hard to see around you bastards) as soon as I merge + me having to keep foot on accelerator to create some distance in front of you. But a lot of the time I get pissed at you guys riding the merge lane 😡.
KingHauler@reddit
Because people think you have to get over a lane so they can merge.
It's not a law to get over, it's a courtesy. And frankly, most people don't deserve that courtesy.
chico-dust@reddit
What I've noticed in my 10ish years driving trucks is the average motorist is like a cat, "if I fits I sits" is how they drive. They don't realize that 200-300ft gap is a safety buffer for you and for them and not there for them to merge in front of you.
Tomokomon@reddit (OP)
I had a car yesterday thread the needle between a fuel tanker in the middle lane and me in the right lane with maybe a 2 foot gap worth of free space after they went between us
chico-dust@reddit
Yeah idk how long you've been driving but that will happen A LOT. 4 wheelers don't seem to ever think "Hey what if this guy doesn't see me?" before they pull some crazy shit.
I actually had an uninsured driver hit my truck doing exactly what you described before and the only reason he pulled over was because he thought he was about to get a big payday.
LuffysRubberNuts@reddit
A big pay without insurance, something doesn’t quite add up here
chico-dust@reddit
Their claim was they just bought the car and hadn't gotten any of the insurance papers yet. But when the cop showed up and they couldn't produce any insurance papers, card, or app the cop listed them as an "uninsured driver" on the accident report.

The best ones here in Alabama stop at end of the ramp and really fuck up traffic for everyone.
This is always fun when that on ramp is at bottom of the hill. So then you end up slowing down to 25 or 30 mph because of these people.
Xiunte@reddit
Hi, neighbor! I know exactly what you mean. People occasionally do this just about everywhere but it seems to happen more often in AL.
You forgot to mention how they absolutely refuse to even try speeding up and matching traffic for the merge too. They'll ride that goddamn lane out all the way to the end at about 30, completely oblivious, then suddenly notice the lane ending and expect someone to let them over at the very last second.
daemonescanem@reddit
Expect, shit in downtown Birmingham, the far right on from from I65 onto 20/59 ends. Ive had people try force me the change lanes because their lane is ending right there. This happens most often during morning rush hour, when I dont even have a lane i can go left into. I just horn shame them.
Mammoth-Ad-9338@reddit
Same reason a lot of truckers don’t get over when they safely can. Some drivers are better than others. Goes for both cars and semis

Bad drivers. In my opinion, liscense test should be harder and more expensive. I deal with slow drivers every morning headin to work. They just block the whole street leaving a mile of open road ahead. No care for the ones behind. Slow merging and i seen people come to a full stop to merger ass well.
The-Shartist@reddit
I was taught to gun it on an on ramp when I learned to drive. You're better off going too fast than too slow when you merge. I cut my teeth around Chicago, where you never had to worry about cars getting up to speed to merge. I didn't see people slowing down, braking, even stopping until I went south of the Ohio river. Nowadays I'm starting to see that shit around Chicago. It started after COVID. It seems a lot of people were terrified to drive after coming out of the lockdowns.
