Well thats too bad, law enforcement just trying to do their jobs. Someone has to enforce federal law, otherwise it would be pure chaos everywhere. Unfortunately we cant pick and choose which law to enforce and which not to. They should be applied equally.
mchaz7@reddit
Dallas is Blue. The Mayor is red. Time to boot his a*s out.
karlgerat@reddit
Lol Dallas is a pretty Red city
Proof-Main8915@reddit
The mayor isn’t red or blue. He’s just a deeply insecure but power hungry egomaniac who will say whatever he thinks will maximize the attention he gets.
Bardfinn@reddit
So, red. Thanks for clarifying.
Proof-Main8915@reddit
He is currently pretending to red and a few years ago he was pretending to be blue. He has no political conviction.
soundlightstheway@reddit
All republicans and 99% of dems have no political convictions. They’re all corporate shills.
Elguero096@reddit
Lmao, red or blue any politician on the spectrum and be a insecure egotistical prick.

soundlightstheway@reddit
No, he’s definitely red. He’s GOP and he fits right in because of being a power hungry egomaniac. That’s who the GOP are.
Proof-Main8915@reddit
Sure but at least most of the GOP hasn’t also been a civil rights champion and progressive congressman in their same career. He has no convictions, conservative nor liberal, and he’s made a career of pretending to be both at different times.
soundlightstheway@reddit
I think what you’re missing is that the vast majority conservative and liberal politicians aren’t principled. They pick those camps, either conservative or liberal, because it’s what their corporate backers say is acceptable. In America, both conservatives and liberals serve corporations. That’s why Trump does everything in how power to enrich billionaires, and, despite Tuesdays results, the historically unpopular democrats do nothing but write ineffective “strongly worded letters.” Dems are finally putting their foot down on healthcare, but that’s largely because corporate donors benefit from healthcare subsidies, not because it actually helps hard working Americans. So no, I reject the concept of liberal or conservative politicians with principles. When they stop taking corporate and AIPAC money, then we can see who is a principled liberal or conservative and who isn’t. Our mayor is just like the rest of his party and most of the opposing party too.
Proof-Main8915@reddit
I’ll stop short of actually disagreeing with you - you are mostly right. Most politicians aren’t as nakedly transparent about it though.
noncongruent@reddit
Sounds very much like you're describing Trump.
Proof-Main8915@reddit

Wonderful-Bite7007@reddit
No, he’s definitely red. He’s GOP and he fits right in because of being a power hungry egomaniac. That’s who the GOP are.
idiotsbydesign@reddit
So a politician...
ihaterunning2@reddit
This is definitely it. I have not once seen him take accountability for anything, he’s always throwing the police chief, city manager, or the council under the bus. Meanwhile he hasn’t attended mandatory meetings in months. I really hope he resigns to run for a statewide office and then loses. If it gets rid of him as mayor fastest that’d be great.
frostysauce@reddit
Ass. The word is ass. You can cuss on the internet.
Slicedeezey@reddit
If you’re a functional adult with the power to vote, you should have some form of government ID. To me whether you’re a republican or democrat, having an ID that says who you are is a very simple request. It’s adulting 101
justplainndaveCGN@reddit
GOOD JOB DALLAS. There's at least SOME sane people in this state.
DFWDave2@reddit
all the big cities in texas are blue. the state loves to lie about this and use gerrymandering and voter id and various illegal anti-democratic strategies to reduce blue votes (or just do outright sabotage, such as b* threats at polling places, police harassing polling place queues, or deciding the election results don't matter because the state has decided without any justification that they must not be correct).
the insanity in texas is due to all the people with money. a lot of families that owned oil and gas wells, eventually abandoned them without consequences, then transitioned to being landlords or property traders. a lot of people who have invested a lot into lobbying and keeping the government in the state from regulating their bad behavior. the establishment goons in office rely on all this money and so they are slaves to it, and they know that propaganda is the key. so they paint this picture that texas is and has always been extremely red. but in various elections you can count up all the numbers and see that the net total in texas is very opposed to this establishment. and because the dems refuse to spend any money here or support local electoral efforts, that messaging is dominant.
I'm not a democrat (or a republican) so I'm not saying all this to support them but just in observation, seeing lots of really stupid election cycles.
if they didn't keep gerrymandering all the districts until they are warped beyond any concept of identity, the republicans would have been totally locked out of most major seats a long while ago.
MagicWishMonkey@reddit
Given the current state of the GOP, what is your reservation about supporting Democrats?
DFWDave2@reddit
That kind of resignation is exactly what both parties want. Also, anyone who has paid attention for twelve seconds has seen dems in office doing bad stuff too. Just generally not awful on a constantly epic scale. "Lesser evil" arguments are exactly what they want, so they don't have to make any actual effort in elections or platform or messaging
Powerful_Log_796@reddit
Just curious, you mean you don’t align with either party but you vote the lesser of evils right? Like I’m totally on board with the sentiment, but voting wise, the moment really is just that. Ideally it’d be a ton of parties that hold different values that form coalitions to consult and compromise but like….. gestures wildly
DFWDave2@reddit
I'm not saying don't do it. I'm saying the common argument-slash-talking-point is in service to a party that knows it doesn't have to make a platform or actually do things. Why bother when people are resigned to the idea that government won't do anything for them and the parties ultimately don't care about them.
Anyone who wants better from government should never make arguments to other voters that serve the establishment. Take that energy and put it into loudly championing your causes and the candidates who share them. Change starts with each of us individually. Punching your friends who want better until they follow the establishment is only pushing that future farther away.
MagicWishMonkey@reddit
Biden passed the most progressive suite of legislation of any administration since LBJ, you guys pretending that the Dems "didn't do anything" are either trolling or completely ignorant to basic reality.
DFWDave2@reddit
Biden did the crime bill. Nothing he ever did will even out that evil. But also, Biden has nothing to do with local dems or state dems or even dems in federal seats. You don't campaign with "remember when we did something people liked?" you campaign with "here is what we are actively doing right now and here is what we want to do next"
Anyway I'm not gonna keep arguing with reddit trolls about dems, that wasn't even the point of the original discussion about ICE and Dallas under a republican mayor who is in romantic love with the secret police who openly hate people with his skin color
Powerful_Log_796@reddit
Sure, but we exist in a system that punishes outliers and has no repercussions for just lying outright. So, yes, I’d love to live in this world where I get to support the candidate that is most closely aligned to my values. But especially today, the stark difference between our 2 realistic options is the only choice for now.
We are in a system that rewards lying, cheating, and bribery. There’s a stark difference between the two parties on that front.
HappierShibe@reddit
That's insane.
The third option is to look at the candidates individually and vote according to their track records and stated intentions. Insisting everyone must be in a state of total obeisance to the democratic party or else they are a raving authoritarian bootlicker is why the democratic party is mostly a mess of well meaning but incapable gerontocratic losers.
You don't have to be a democrat to vote for democratic candidates, and you don't have to be a republican to vote for republican candidates. Sometimes one party or the other will put up a candidate so utterly repugnant, that you cannot bring yourself to vote for them. I'm excited to see where Colin Allred and Jasmine Crocket go next, but Beto can't seem to do basic math, and feels completely out of touch with the state he presumably wants to run. The democratic contenders across much of Texas are not compelling capable candidates running organized campaigns with clear messages.
Based on primary participation numbers, most people are not registered republicans or democrats and don't consider themselves to be formally affiliated with a political party.
I tend to mostly vote for Democrat candidates; I've never voted for Trump or anyone associated with him. But I don't consider myself a democrat or a republican, and the desires and demands of either party at an organizational level clearly aren't intended to serve my needs or interests.
Unless you are incredibly privileged, No matter who wins the political game, you lose. All you can really do is try to root for the team that is going to screw you over the least.
Right now that choice should be pretty obvious to everyone, but that doesn't mean it should include fealty to a political organization.
30yearCurse@reddit
ah, yes, the individual inspection of candidates, sure, that not how MAGA votes, and I have not seen any candidate that has not been MAGA centric.
Give a couple of Repubs in TX that are not MAGA drones.
There are very few "conservative" repubs left, and have not found any in TX.

Advocating for unfettered illegal immigration is the opposite of sane.
Im_Captain_Jack@reddit
So is this comment, if that's your takeaway after reading the article.
frostysauce@reddit
I'm curious who your ancestors were. Were there here already when Europeans arrived? Where they kidnapped from their home and brought here to be slaves by Europeans? Or were your ancestors part of the unfettered illegal immigration of the past?
justplainndaveCGN@reddit
I don’t think anyone is advocating for that. We want humane treatment, and immigration reform.
BarracudaGullible321@reddit
Yep! Republicans represent 40% of the state of Maine and have zero representatives in Congress. Who’s cheating?
WapitiHorn@reddit
Dallas leftist pussies are hilarious. 😂
Hazie3D@reddit
Why tf do you want undocumented criminals around so badly just to complain or more likely shut up when they kill or commit other crimes. You're all lost
ErictheRedKind1@reddit
Undocumented immigrants commit crimes at lower rates than native born citizens. There have been a few studies.
FarFormedApproach@reddit
Prove it. The studies sure don’t. They’re just based on tailored data sets meant to “prove” what the study’s funders set out to show. Good luck getting reliable data about crime in the US, especially from the FBI.
ErictheRedKind1@reddit
How am I supposed to prove it if you won't even believe it when multiple studies have shown it? What evidence do you have that the studies were biased? You prove that.
Just-Goofy@reddit
Well... pretty sure they aren't shooting up schools. Did you want the numbers on that 🤔
iGoKommando@reddit
They're less likely to commit crimes. take your bullshit elsewhere.
Hazie3D@reddit
If their here illegally. That is a crime🙂
Just-Goofy@reddit
Dude, you don't even get it. A lot of these people came here according to the law and then are deported without due process. That's the illegal part. Perhaps you should understand what legal and not legal is. What you're really talking about is brown people coming regardless of what laws they are using to come.
FarFormedApproach@reddit
Entirely false. They came here and were illegally allowed to stay by a president’s administrative policies. Despite a president choosing to not enforce the law, folks breaking the law and being present in the United States without legal authorization defined by Congress still renders them criminal illegal aliens, no matter what a president’s feelings and policies—or you—think.
SirMrAdam@reddit
Finding legal technicalities so that you have an excuse to treat people like trash isnt the win you think it is.
greelraker@reddit
So is failing to signal, driving recklessly, following too closely, speeding….. to the gulag with everyone who drives on 635!!!
frostysauce@reddit
Actually it is a civil matter, not a criminal one. You're not even correct about that.
Sairo_H@reddit
So this means they should suffer and have their lives destroyed? I'm so over this nonsense. They are still humans. Stop acting like it makes them less than human, that's what you're doing when you say things like this.
greelraker@reddit
Have you seen what the documented criminals are doing? He’s asking the Supreme Court not to fund snap, blatantly breaking the hatch act every chance he gets, and enabling a secret police force to kidnap and detain people without due process.
I’ll take undocumented criminals over that, 7 days a week.

Fun fact: being undocumented in the USA is the same level of offense as a speeding ticket - it's a civil infraction.
Gullible morons like this are just begging for authoritarianism without realizing it will inevitably come for them too.
Sairo_H@reddit
100% they commit crimes on this level on the regular. They can't lie and say they've never sped in their life while driving.
Just-Goofy@reddit
What are you even talking about?
Sairo_H@reddit
That theyre claiming their criminality(illegal status) is justification for the lack of due process/de-humanization of them. They likely commit offenses(such as speeding) that are on the same level*(legally) as being an "illegal".
frostysauce@reddit
I spent my first 40 years in Texas, mainly in Dallas. I've moved a few places since then. I can tell you someone as dull and as hateful as you would fit right in here in Oklahoma!

Just-Goofy@reddit
No sht. That's called immigration reform. I have a friend that finally received a work permit AFTER 20 YEARS. And went to all his court hearings. Then was deported anyhow. And actually, some of those jobs pay pretty well. White guys aren't even applying. You seem intelligent enough, but aren't even doing research. This is a brown person thing a lot of these people are coming here legally* as you suggest and then being deported anyhow. I'm not even sure that you understand what legally means

It says right on the CBP website for the 287(g) program that the funding is a reimbursement. That’s why the police chief said no and it makes complete sense why DPD doesn’t want to front the cost. The information on this isn’t hidden, but the mayor would love for us to believe that we’re leaving money on the table.
art_as_violence@reddit
Just when I think the depravity and evil couldn't go deeper when it comes to ICE, they never fail to level up
Ok-Aardvark-6742@reddit
Don’t give ICE all the credit, this is the Trump administration. Kristi Noem basically has a blank check when it comes to ICE. If they wanted to give Dallas millions up front for this program, they could and they would. But a reimbursement tells me that they want to look for loopholes not to pay local police out for the immigration enforcement they do.
party_atthemoontower@reddit
Tracks for Trump
jminer1@reddit
Its a low key take over because once he owes them millions they have to stay in line or risk not getting paid. Just like every gov from an agg state knows trump is fucking up their business but better not say anything about it if they want their bailout.
mattomic@reddit
Stiffing employees after the job is done is par for the course for Trump.
flaming_bob@reddit
Beat me to it.
Bardfinn@reddit
Loopholes? Trump has never relied on loopholes. He just stiffs the people he hires, and that forces them to sue for reimbursement, or write off the loss.
sportsarestressful@reddit
This is actually how federal task forces work. You dont get paid to participate, you get reimbursed for time spent working on the task force. In some cases, there are supplemental grants to buy equipment needed for the task force, and in even more limited cases the local government might get a cut of any assets seized and forfeited upon conviction (this is NOT "oh you drove through my city with $2k? Must be criminal I'm keeping it" asset forfeiture.)
It's generally a good thing for crime reduction with locals and feds work together. Immigration is the notable exception, because the willingness of the community to participate as witnesses and reporters of crime. For example, your human trafficking task force relies on neighbors and victims to both give police a heads up and act as witnesses. If the locals are working as immigration agents, suddenly those same communities who notify police to the crime dont do that anymore, because they are afraid of harm coming to their friends and neighbors if police know they are there.
Ok-Aardvark-6742@reddit
Right, but a city that can’t hire enough officers and has cited salaries and cost as the primary barrier to staffing shouldn’t be pulling officers off of local enforcement and onto immigration enforcement with the hope of reimbursement. If it’s that important to the federal government to have DPD’s support, they can pay for it up front so immigration enforcement won’t be detrimental to local law enforcement. I’m glad our city council and chief of police recognize this and are standing up to the mayor’s political posturing.
On the other point, I absolutely agree with you, this is where the concept of “sanctuary cities” comes from.
sportsarestressful@reddit
100%. I was just addressing the idea that reimbursement in this case is some sort of bait and switch or underhanded thing. It's a terrible idea to participate for a thousand reasons, that just isn't one of them.
Ok-Aardvark-6742@reddit
That part is based on the current president’s reputation in private business, and the numerous lawsuits filed against him and his companies that back up his reputation. I wouldn’t loan him a dollar, less expect reimbursement without some kind of battle.
crooke86@reddit
There are also a number of cases to look to. Cities who have participated have lost money even after maxing out the reimbursement they negotiated.
mzfnk4@reddit
Channel 4 was covering last night's meeting this morning and made a point to state the mayor wasn't even at the meeting.

287g was enacted in 1996 under the INA. This is not a Trump program!
Ok-Aardvark-6742@reddit
First, I never said it’s a Trump program.
That said, the Trump administration is promoting it and Trump’s chosen cabinet member Kristi Noem is ultimately responsible for administering it while she’s serving as the secretary of homeland security. So implying that the Trump administration doesn’t have anything to do with it because they didn’t implement the program itself is disingenuous.
bemvee@reddit

Do you think 287(g) cities are getting reimbursed during the government shutdown? Are ICE agents still getting paid?
frostysauce@reddit
They are getting paid.
https://www.reuters.com/world/us/some-federal-law-enforcement-receive-pay-during-government-shutdown-2025-10-16/
https://fortune.com/2025/10/22/government-shutdown-ice-agents-super-checks-federal-employees-furlough/
I remember hearing the the so called "BBB" secured funding for ICE for years so they will continue to operate with pretty much unlimited funds throughout any shutdown. BUT the only source I can find on that without spending too much of my Friday night is the Gemini AI answer at the top of Google search and I don't trust that for shit.

DFWDave2@reddit
worth noting that if you show up to meetings demanding to speak and refusing to fully identify yourself, you'd eventually be dragged out by cops and probably arrested. but ice goons get to be like "I refuse to identify myself so for all you know I'm just a terrorist here to sabotage your civil proceedings"
txnewsprincess@reddit (OP)
In a very long live posting session on Bluesky during the meeting, I did mention that everyone that offered public comment prior to the ICE officers was required to identify themselves fully.

“Can you tell me what the 4th Amendment is?” “I’m not prepared to …” “How about our 14th Amendment?” “Where are you from, sir?” Bazaldua said before Francis responded, shifting gears. (Francis spoke with an obvious accent.) Francis began to stammer an answer, but Bazaldua continued: “I think you were afforded due process …” Council members complained that the line of questioning was not appropriate. “I think there’s some irony here,” Bazaldua said. He later apologized if his line of questioning made people uncomfortable but said, “That’s exactly what we’re asking our officers to do” to residents of Dallas.
