Hyundai Ioniq 6 N review: so brilliant, you'll forget it’s fully electric | Top Gear

Honestly in terms of feature set for the price it seems perfect but the elephant in the room is the ICCU issue, even if it's bound to fail, if it's a $1-2k fix then it's gone for good I'd be fine with that, but it's concerning that from my research they didn't seem to have a fix yet.
Bebealex@reddit
You said features for price, have you seen the $70,000 mentioned?
r00000000@reddit
Yeah, EVs are just expensive. The competitors in that range are like Model 3 Performance which is faster but uglier IMO and worse interior, also more expensive internationally, Mach E GT which is slower and a SUV, i4 M50 which is slower but probably the best comparison point IMO, and the Scat Pack which is probably a lot less than MSRP now but I've heard it has poor reliability and overestimated range. Unfortunately I'm Canadian so I don't have access to the Chinese EV market either but I'm sure if I did, the Ioniq 6 N would be a lot less appealing
CrispityCraspits@reddit
The fact that the article doesn't even mention this borders on fraud on the reader.
Innocent-Bystander94@reddit
They hated him forever he spoke the truth.
CrispityCraspits@reddit
The guy who mentions the issue gets 70 upvotes but making the point that maybe this article should note this massive downside gets 10 downvotes. I guess TopGear has more bots than Hyundai.
guisar@reddit
Yeah, I don’t even understand what makes it any different than any other ev. Is it the adjustment in f/r rear torque that’s unique? the suspension and everything else seems bog standard, nothing special.
r00000000@reddit
It's nothing special, just a good package of good interior, tech features, (allegedly) fun to drive, interesting (albeit controversial) looks, decently fast, and at a good price point. Likely cheaper than the Model 3 Performance outside of America based on the MSRP of both in America.
trail-g62Bim@reddit
Last I checked, it can take a long time to get fixed too due to parts availability, no? You better hope it's not your only car if so.
eh_itzvictor@reddit
As a Hyundai dealer loaner admin, its thankfully not taking too long to get them anymore. They dont seem to have backorder issues anymore.
xt1nct@reddit
Have they resolved it? Or are they just “fixing” it.
eh_itzvictor@reddit
Our engineers are still working for the permanent fix, but right now we will continue to replace the parts if they do show issue, and they also have recalls available.
Hopefully one day the problems will be put to rest! These EVs are stellar.
orhantemerrut@reddit
Go N!
ZannX@reddit
Anecdotally, our Ioniq 5 just got big by the ICCU bug and it's been at the dealer for over a week. We'll see how much longer. We have an Ioniq 6 loaner.
Given that our friend with a GV60 also went through the same, at this point... I really hesitate to recommend the entire platform. I don't know if we have enough data about the ICCU replacements being a 'permanent' fix. Or if it's just another ticking time bomb. It's definitely left a bad taste in my mouth.
Innocent-Bystander94@reddit
I can answer that for you. It’s another ticking time bomb. The core issue hasn’t been fixed, they’re just replacing a flawed broken part with a flawed working part, one that while eventually fail
SkellyJelly33@reddit
This is literally the only reason I didn't buy an Ioniq 5. Hope it gets resolved quickly for you
lamemonkeypox@reddit
Welcome to the Hyundai/Kia ownership experience
turb0_encapsulator@reddit
my understanding is that the failure rate is 1%.
SecretPantyWorshiper@reddit
Whats ICCU?
biggsteve81@reddit
Integrated Charge Control unit. It is both the high voltage battery charger and converts the high voltage into 12V to run most vehicle accessories (and keep the 12v battery charged, like an alternator in regular cars). It has a failure mode where it stops outputting 12v, and when the 12v battery dies so does the car.
r00000000@reddit
Handles charging for the car and converting power from the EV battery to the 12V battery, it's in many but not all of the Hundai group's EVs. If it fails, the car can't charge and won't be operable anymore. There's been some issue where it short circuits and blows up, it's unclear what's been causing it because it's still an ongoing issue.
stav_and_nick@reddit
This is a car company that cheaped out on a $5 part because it wasn't legally mandated in its most important market. That "fuck it, close enough" engineering culture puts me off their regular cars, but for N products? Idk, they're finally starting to get closer to the risk-reward area of ownership
Puff-Daddy-Sun@reddit
I love this thing. It’s admirable that Hyundai is really trying to cater to the enthusiast crowd. I love how the 6 looks, it’s super weird and that’s great - kind of like an old Citroën. And I like that they changed the ignition sound to a V8 compared to the 5’s turbo 4. I still think it’s too much money, but I understand.
Bebealex@reddit
$70,000
lowstrife@reddit
Changing it to a V8 sounds great - way better than the generic 4-pot that they were using.
One day I hope there will be a rolodex of engine sounds that you can choose from. V10, turbo V8, small displacement N\A V8, V12, etc, etc. Another evolution from that would be to change the power map from the electric motors so that they map to the real torque and power curve of whatever motor you're emulating. Who cares if its slower, you're already emulating gearshifts. Just put it in full EV mode if you want max speed. It's all about re-creating experience, something EV's are truly lacking.
ape_ck@reddit
They should part with the Gran Turismo guys. I remember way back watching some short documentary of the process of how they collected sound samples for the in game car sounds. I bet there is a wealth of stuff that could be used.
peanutbuttahcups@reddit
100%. A sound library shouldn't be hard to generate, digital synthesizers and racing games already exist. But I guess it's something the aftermarket can provide if manufacturers won't.
I'm also glad Toyota is dabbling with an actual mechanical manual transmission in EVs, like this EV-swapped AE86, complete with 4AGE engine sounds. This proof of concept seems to show that you really can have an engaging EV experience.
What Hyundai needs to do is make an attainable EV version of the N Vision 74 with a mechanical stickshift and a bunch of engine sounds so I can load up cammed_LS3.vst, or Dahm_4_rotor.VST anytime I want.
Zorbick@reddit
There are multiple aftermarket kits (I have a buddy that installed the Maxhaust on his Mach E, but damn is it expensive...) and DIY walkthroughs that can give you whatever sound you want from an EV. They plug into the OBDII and react accordingly. Then when you're over it you can just go back to the defaults.
My favorite is his profile with the TIE screech.
AgentScreech@reddit
Link? This is the gray area of this tech that of going to lead to lawsuits, but it's fun until that happens
_Floriduh_@reddit
Drop down menu of all the greats.
Select Lexus LFA while driving an EV in traffic.
lowstrife@reddit
You'd never get to use the revs! I'd want a cammed 454 v8 or a Benz 6.2 for that so you get the bubgububgubfubgub at 1400rpm as you're pooting around.
kicksledkid@reddit
I want that 2 L I4 Diesel they put in the W123
I love that silly little tractor noise
PhantomZmoove@reddit
When I read your comment it auto translated in my head to the actual sound. Nice work!
Great, I had planned on staying home for lunch today. Guess I have to go out instead, that sound isn't going to just make its self. (unless you have an EV, which I do not)
lowstrife@reddit
Jealous. I've driven the 4.0 turbo in the new AMG models, which for what it is sounds incredible, but I've never had a go in the OG motors yet.
thatmatt925@reddit
Max speed should be the tron noises lol, they already had a Disney package...why not tron
randeus@reddit
It honestly sounds more like a v6 than a v8, because if that’s a v8 sound, that’s a very sad sounding v8.
lowstrife@reddit
Yeah they really need to call up AMG or the Forza\Grand Turismo folks and figure out whatever the hell they're doing, and do that. It's still too synthesized. Way too.
animalant@reddit
Engine sounds you can choose from, eh?
Renault Clio GT?
Oo__II__oO@reddit
With EVs, the stock sound map would be a whistling diesel.
PersiusAlloy@reddit
lol catering to the enthusiast crowd? not with full BEV drivetrain and stupid digital revving that sounds like a video game 😂😂
hermitcraftfan135@reddit
It’s super super cool imo, I’d love one a lot. I’m probably in some kind of minority here but I love the idea of EVs making fake engine sounds in the interior lol. Get to enjoy some silly sounds without being a douche to everyone around you
MumpsyDaisy@reddit
Personally while I'd rather have real over fake, I can at least appreciate the possibilities opened up by faking it - if you're gonna have fake noises, fake shifts, then you can take advantage of it by giving you multiple "fake cars" in one, essentially, so you can switch between them as suits you. You could probably do some pretty wild shit with electric motors too to let you adjust power delivery, swapping between RWD, FWD, AWD with different levels of front/rear bias, etc. so that in many ways you truly get an all-in-one car.
nleksan@reddit
u/MumpsyDaisy that is an absolutely brilliant idea. I'll now be forever disappointed if this doesn't come to pass.
eh_itzvictor@reddit
You may think it's too much money, but for all of the car you get, it's a very fair price tag. Compare its performance and enthusiast features to other cars in the same grouping and I feel like the 5N and 6N prices are way more justified.
stav_and_nick@reddit
The Ioniq 5N is like $80,000 in Canada; imagine telling someone 20-30 years ago you can grab a 600ish HP car with every amenity you'd want basically for that much
People would ask whether Porsche or Ferrari had fallen on hard times and were offering discounts
snubda@reddit
30 years ago $80k was $170k today, I’m not sure anyone would be jumping up and down about the value
epihocic@reddit
You did that the wrong way round.
snubda@reddit
I didn’t. Lol.
The purchasing power of $80k at that time was equivalent to $170k today.
epihocic@reddit
Right. So an $80k car today would’ve been cheaper 30 years ago.
snubda@reddit
You’re not understanding the point my friend. Nobody is saying cars are cheaper today than they were before. An $80k car in the 1990s is the value equivalent of a $170k car today. It was REALLY expensive for a car back then.
So yeah, if you told someone in 1995 they were getting 600hp for $80k, it would be like telling someone today they could get 600hp for $170k. Their answer wouldn’t be “wow!” It would be “well yeah I’d hope so for that much money.”
fartknocker121@reddit
It definitely has a unique look. I vaguely remember taking a class many many years ago where the teacher had a computer program that would allow the user to create automobile shapes and it would test its aerodynamics and I believe he showed us a design resembling the Hyundai here and infact it was very aerodynamic
biciklanto@reddit
THANK YOU!
I've tried to enunciate why I totally dig the Ioniq 6, and haven't quite been able to get there.
That is /exactly/ why I think it's great. It's totally the quirky sort of thing I'd imagine the French to come up with. Love it.
sprchrgddc5@reddit
Hyundai had at one point the Veloster N, Kona N, and Elantra N for sale for mid-$30k. The EN is still around $35k OTD. I think the only other cars in this price race is the GTI and WRX. Hyundai pushed out enthusiast trims that get favorable reviews at a good price but little real fanfare. They are doing great things that get overlooked due to their well deserved shitty reliability and easy theft reputation.
The moment I test drove my Kona N and put it in N mode was the moment I knew I had to have it. I just hate to think that the next gen Elantra likely will be over $40k.

cpcxx2@reddit
How much will this thing be? I love that it’s not just a straight line monster like most high HP EVs and should handle and have a little drama with the fake sounds. I can get behind this thing 100% as a performance EV. I’m sure no one will buy it though.
Puff-Daddy-Sun@reddit
Most likely around $75,000
stav_and_nick@reddit
As a proud fan of ugly cars, I really love the Ioniq 6, which means I've cursed it to be the worst selling car in human history
hopenoonefindsthis@reddit
The cool thing is they are nailing both the enthusiast market and the mass market, proving you don’t really have to give up one for the other.

Seems like Hyundai has figured out the formula for fun EV's.
Now put it in a smaller car, drop the weight a few hundred pounds, and it would be sick.
Dirty_Dragons@reddit
Still waiting for a two door coupe EV, other than the Charger, which is big and heavy.
abattlescar@reddit
To be honest, even as an enthusiast, I don't see the point of a truly small EV. I'd like to see one sub-4000 lbs, but asking for a coupe or smaller is just pointless.
The packaging problem of an EV basically infinitely favors a larger car, as the net downside of adding more weight, and especially size, is negligible for all but the most niche of performance cornering.
The battery essentially needs to be large and heavy, therefore the platform above it will be large and heavy, regardless of how many doors you put on it.
Putting a smaller, less powerful motor has essentially no impact, even a whole extra motor, as with the Ioniq 6 AWD only has an 11% impact on range.
In essence, if a car is made to a size where it practically makes sense to only have two doors, the battery's footprint, and range, would be reduced by 35%.
Vhozite@reddit
Some of us like small cars?
abattlescar@reddit
Yes, but battery tech says that a small EV is a largely compromised experience, to a point which I don't think anyone wants. You'll be waiting for a while is all I'm saying.
Ran4@reddit
That's just wrong. While not a full-on city car, the Renault 5 is a smashing success.
Small cars are extremely popular.
abattlescar@reddit
Except an EX30 isn't a lightweight, nor small, car and has no intention to be.
The Renault 5 is great among its company of subcompacts, and I'd like to see them experiment with making it sporty, but I don't think it has any room to go upmarket with the battery capacity it's limited to by the sheer limitation of size.
Furryyyy@reddit
Yep, by this point I'm surprised they don't use square footage to measure some of these SUVs lol. They're basically as big as my college dorm
Ran4@reddit
I had a Honda E, which was 1500 kg.
They could easily have removed the rear seats/rear doors and reduced the height to make a 2-door coupe and change to lightweight rims, and it would probably weigh 100 kg less and be an even more fun car to drive.
abattlescar@reddit
But what would removing 100 kg truly do? You've lost 2 doors and 2 seats and headroom and good seats.
In return you get a 1440 kg fwd car with an underpowered motor and poor range. What a grand improvement. The weight of a Honda HRV, the performance of a Hyundai Venue, and the packaging of a Mini Cooper. Incredible company its in there.
Yes, we can make a pos like the E-tech, just like the Leaf, and the Bolt. Wildly successful cars as you may know.
Dirty_Dragons@reddit
Excuse me? How can you not see the point? Uh, instant torque. An EV GR86 that can do 0-60 in 3 seconds. Yes please!
For now.
Battery technology is getting better and sacrificing range really isn't a concern.
ggtsu_00@reddit
Give it the styling of the Veloster N and we'd have a winner here.
snubda@reddit
A few hundred pounds isn’t going to do much of anything on a 5000lb car. At least with EVs they carry their weight low.
AudiB9S4@reddit
Brilliantly executed, but that ridiculous rear wing has to go.
JtheNinja@reddit
I love the wing. I’m sad they toned it down a bit from the RN22e https://www.hyundai-n.com/en/models/rolling-lab/rn22e
PotatoMan_69@reddit
Sad they didn't just go on and make the RN22e, the front end of it looks so much better than the one they released.
Jedibenuk@reddit
'Performace'? Poor show Hyundai! QC out the window.
handymanshandle@reddit
Kinda hate to say it, but I think the wing makes the otherwise bizarre looking rear end look decent. It looks less like they spammed subdivision and smoothing multiple times in Blender now.
AudiB9S4@reddit
Agree that it is an unusual shape, but personally I just can't separate a legitimate use from the overabundance of weekend boy-racer Civics with these ridiculous spoilers.

Innocent-Bystander94@reddit
Say it with me now: ICCU
furioe@reddit
It’s like a 1% failure rate. It is definitely a problem but it’s framed like it happens to everyone which it doesn’t.
1AMA-CAT-AMA@reddit
Failure rate itself isn’t as bad as the horror stories from people without a car for months with it on back order.
horribadperson@reddit
its a lot better now for wait times with people getting it replaced in about a week. The N versions should use the same part but who knows, the iccu went out on my 5n early this year and it took a little over 3 weeks.
GeoffKingOfBiscuits@reddit
Is that verified? Anecdotal but I only know three people with Ioniqs and all of them had to have it replaced.
furioe@reddit
That’s the official number from NHTSA. Maybe it’s worse but afaik it’s not as frequent as people imply.
opeth10657@reddit
1% failure rate for a car is pretty terrible.
A lot of the big recalls end up with like 5-6 failures out of hundreds of thousands of vehicles
fraxool@reddit
Definitely more than 1%. I had a 5N and experienced the ICCU issue myself. In the 5N Facebook group I’m in, at least half of the owners have had the same problem…
jamshill@reddit
I want a convertible version of this
xxBrun0xx@reddit
The "spec highlights" are very wrong. 323 miles of range - no chance. 320.5 bhp (it's double that), max speed of 115 mph (my 5N will do 160, so I'm guessing the 6N will be in the same ballpark).
Very cool car, really hoping my 5N gets the new sounds and gear ratios from the 6N!
DirkNL@reddit
I love the look of this car. It’s the bastard child of a model 3 and a taycan with that “we have Porsche” at home attitude from Hyundai.
I have 1 more year on my Kona lease. Seriously considering this thing!
Harryhodl@reddit
It’s so ugly though
dumbledayum@reddit
what crowd are they catering too?
People who like ICE wont go for an imitator
if they want EV people, M3 and MY are wayyyy better options, even their own Ioniq 5 is a better car.
(fuck Musk, but Tesla is still the best in class)
flGovEmployee@reddit
M3 is a BMW and MY is weird way to capitalize 'my'.
Pretty sure you mean Model 3 and Model Y.
dumbledayum@reddit
Why do you want to use Abbreviation for company and not for another?
if you have problem with calling it Tesla M3, why aren’t you calling another one Bayerische Motoren Werke M3???
withsexyresults@reddit
That full on side profile looks terrible. Apple magic mouse with wheels
DarkMatterM4@reddit
Really? I love it! I think this is the most exciting-looking electric car ever.
LilBrownBoyX@reddit
It’s fire, but I understand where bro is coming from. If the greenhouse was just a few inches shorter, it would look so much better, and would probably be more aerodynamic.
doctorcapslock@reddit
i saw it irl and it's so ugly
SkellyJelly33@reddit
I would like it if it didn't have the saggy loaded diaper ass
snubda@reddit
I love the 5 but the 6 has always looked like a melting Porsche Panamera to me
2days@reddit
I won’t knock them to hard for being a great affordable car that offers enough luxury items but I am just not a fan of any of that styling. It’s just been
jarface111@reddit
Yeah I hate the swooped down look like that. Same with those Mercedes that have that look
Essteethree@reddit
I'm not a fan of the 'loaded diaper' Mercedes look either, but this is a bit better. To me it sort of looks like a mix of Audi TT and Mercedes rear slope, with a Porsche spoiler. I don't hate it, I just think the Ioniq 6 looks too long for this particular ass.
The front end on its own looks cool, and the rear from the c-pillar back looks cool, I just don't like them together. Give me a slick looking coupe with that ass-end, and now we're talking.
z31@reddit
It looks like a fucking shoehorn lol
HeavyHands@reddit
The Ioniq 5 and 6 are hideous and I don't think it gets discussed enough.
capri_stylee@reddit
Nah the 5 is the best looking common car on the market ATM, the 6 is brutal, I'll give you that.
HeavyHands@reddit
The pixel lights look cheaper than something on the clearance aisle at Autozone. The hard angle oragami fold between the doors looks like it glitched during rendering. The wheels appear to be directly inspired by a kitchen colander. There are horizontal lines and slats around all the lower fascias that make the design even less cohesive. It belongs in some shitty mobile GTA rip off game where the developers thought "hey, what would a modern Pontiac Aztek look like but also don't spend too much time thinking about it."
I'm sure it's a fine car to drive and own but it makes me wince when I'm stuck behind one in traffic.
capri_stylee@reddit
Everything you've described is why I like it, it's the perfect antidote to an ocean of blobby Suvs that the rest of the manufacturers are serving up. I can even respect the 6 for not following the crowd, even if I think it looks awful.
HeavyHands@reddit
I had not considered the contrarian position of viewing it as a middle finger to the generic blob suv. Fair enough.
trail-g62Bim@reddit

lowstrife@reddit

Bonerchill@reddit
“You keep forgetting it’s electric” sounds more like damnation of modern ICE cars than praise for the 6N.
This car has bland steering and uninvolving brakes, like its ICE competition.
The only thing it lacks is a powerful engine that is nearly devoid of character other than being powerful and making pops and bangs.
It’s not even meaningfully heavier than an ICE super saloon.
WendysChiliAndPepsi@reddit
My exact reaction to that headline also. It really is a damnation of modern ICE cars because compare this to a car 15 years ago and it would be no competition.
Mojave_Idiot@reddit
Again with this. Authenticity matters. I’m sure a subset will love the racing sim nonsense involved with this.
Fake or even piped in sound is just never gonna resonate with me.
Plus that thing is ugly as hell and I don’t say that often.
markeydarkey2@reddit
You don't have to use it, it's an optional function.
Mojave_Idiot@reddit
I am responding directly to the headline
clownpirate@reddit
I would rather manufacturers just embrace that an EV is an EV. I see absolutely nothing wrong with a /sport/performance/enthusiast EV.
This masquerading of an EV to feel/look like an ICE is stupid IMHO.
Realistic_Village184@reddit
I don't see the issue. It's a completely optional feature. You can buy and own a 5N or 6N for years without ever hearing a fake exhaust or experienced simulated gear shifts.
However, reviewers have pretty much universally praised how much fun the 5N is to drive with the simulated shifts. It's okay if you aren't personally interested, but calling something a lot of people love "stupid" just makes you seem immature.
clownpirate@reddit
Many enthusiasts have long called engine noise (real, fake, or combined) piped in via the audio system stupid.
Ironic that they now defend the very same in these cars that don’t even have natural engine noise at all as cool.
Realistic_Village184@reddit
I mean, there's a reason for that piped-in noise. Noise insulation standards have gotten a lot higher. Either you have a really noisy cabin or the exhaust sounds are muffled and unimpressive in the cabin. The obvious solution is to keep the insulated cabin and then just pipe in some extra (usually real) exhaust sound into the cabin. You still get the exciting sound and good insulation from unwanted noises outside, so it's a brilliant solution that accomplishes everything people want with literally no downsides except people who make up nonsense to be upset about.
clownpirate@reddit
My point is that I’d be surprised if people complaining about the piped in semi-fake engine noises as lame in ICE cars are the aren’t the same people praising this Ioniq5/6N for having totally-fake engine noises as cool.
trail-g62Bim@reddit
I always assumed, perhaps incorrectly, they are basing it on when CVTs first came out and then manufacturers added in the fake shifting based on customer feedback.
strongmanass@reddit
I get downvoted every time I say it (as is everyone else in this comment chain). Everyone downvoting fits the made-up profile of the target customer...except they'd never buy it because why accept digitized mimicry when you can still go out and buy a real V8 powered car? All the reviewers raved about the I5N and then went back to their ICE cars. I can think of only one (Matt from Downshift) who traded in an ICE car for the I5N, and it wasn't a performance car.
Similarly, petrolheads will talk about how cool it is that Hyundai is making fun EVs and then go right back to whatever car with an engine they actually want. There will be some outliers, but this kind of product is why Beyond and Impossible are consistently a month away from bankruptcy. People who want the real thing buy the real thing, and people who rejected the real thing don't want to pretend to consume it.
Mojave_Idiot@reddit
Agreed. 100 percent. Just ball up all of the so often discussed advantages of an EV, compact prime movers, simplicity, weight distribution, etc into a two door and see how that does.
Vhozite@reddit
Imagine being downvoted for caring about authenticity. Only on Reddit lol
stav_and_nick@reddit
I think we're in a weird period; there's some interesting electric cars coming out from small players, I think something like that Gorden Murrey or the SC01 is where it'll eventually go, but right now?
CATL has consistently called how batteries will evolve, and from their projections the real lightweight stuff (which I'm defining as sub 3000 pounds with at least 60kwh) are going to be in the 2030s
Something with a shit ton of torque on demand, with hydraulic (or just exceptionally good electric) steering, and decently lightweight, preferably with a hardtop (and brown used from the factory etc) would be one of the most fun cars on the market, ICE or EV. But that's my own biases, at least
the_joy_of_VI@reddit
Say what now? GMA is making an EV??
stav_and_nick@reddit
https://www.motor1.com/news/751636/gordon-murray-new-lightweight-platform/
strongmanass@reddit
They had an EV division that they sold to some gulf state IIRC.
Mojave_Idiot@reddit
I think an affordable performance EV that wasn’t pretending to be something else would do great but I don’t have the data these manufacturers do.
six3oo@reddit
Recreating petrol cars with an EV is like fucking a robot girlfriend. A sad state of affairs.
DarkMatterM4@reddit
If EV is the future, I'd rather it look like this than a Model 3. Obviously, it will never match the experience of an ICE car, but if I absolutely had to get an EV, it would be either this or the 5N.
Bradymyhero@reddit
I think you haven't been following the news the past few months...EV demand has slowed and demand in the enthuaist category is nil. The "future" is producing vehicles that make a profit. EVs will continue to gain market share, but in the enthusiast category there is no evidence your belief is valid
Bradymyhero@reddit
I can admire the innovation, but as proven time-and-time again there is no demand for EV "enthusiast" cars.
TDTimmy21@reddit
Way overpriced for a fugly car.
The wing helps but it ain't practical and it ain't sexy
5n didn't sell well due to cost (in Aus at least) and this will be worse. Least that's more practical and appeals to wider audience than a sedan.
Hell the base ioniq 6 were practically being given away with 2023 models sitting in dealer lots into 2025 lol
_boblob_law_@reddit
How much is everyone paying for this on a lease?
1_BigPapi@reddit
I like the design. Very unique without being pretentious. Also don't these rare sub 4 second 0-60?
Mojave_Idiot@reddit
It’s less rare in the awd performance EV segment for sure. It’s mainly the front engine rwd gassers that struggle to get lower than high 3 0-60.
Ftpini@reddit
lol, outside of EVs a sub 4 second 0-60 is seriously quick and not at all a cheap proposition if the car is at all reliable and comfortable to drive.
In the EV world thanks to Tesla with the Model 3 Performance a sub 3 second EV is easily attainable around $55k brand new. The Ioniq 6N doing 3.2 seconds to 60 is good for an EV but not great. In the 4 years I drove my model 3 performance never even once did its 3.1 0-60 sprint lose its charm, but there is more to a fun car than its raw acceleration.
guisar@reddit
What do you think (dynamically) is different with this hyundai? is it just the adjustable torque split? the chassis, etc all seem bog standard so I don’t understand what’s “dynamic” about it other than mt waxing on.
1_BigPapi@reddit
For sure. Well I think I'd frame it more like this - its a Hyundai that can drop a 3 second 0-60 in a fairly unpretentious package. I know 0-60 is kind of becoming moot in an era of EV but its still really impressive considering the brand and overall package. It would be like Chevy dropping a 3 second Impala or something.
oily76@reddit
Rate, I'd guess.
Mojave_Idiot@reddit
Ah. That makes more sense.
cwatson214@reddit
If the Ioniq 6 were a hatchback, it would be the perfect electric car
abattlescar@reddit
I mean, that really is the Ioniq 5. Your only argument is that it's ugly, so that's fair, but most wouldn't agree.
The Ioniq 5 has a smaller wheelbase. It's quicker, especially in non-N form. It's infinitely more practical.
I don't know what you picture when you mean an Ioniq 6 with a hatch if not an Ioniq 5, and I don't think you really know what you want if you think the Ioniq 5 is some sort of gross compromise.
Oh_ffs_seriously@reddit
Liftback/sportback/whateverback.
CrimsonFlam3s@reddit
There's the bmw i4 but it lacks all the cool fake shifting/exhaust noises
blr1g@reddit
I wish it had a sportback like the Kia Stinger. It would make the trunk much more usable.
DomiNate89@reddit
Ioniq 5
cwatson214@reddit
Not what I meant - they are 2 different things
DomiNate89@reddit
Okay well then be more descriptive because Ioniq 5 has a hatch. If you’re thinking along the lines of the size of a golf or a veloster then say so. Don’t downvote me due to your lack of description
cwatson214@reddit
I want an elegant sedan with a hatch, not an already dated-looking retro Golf wannabe. I'll downvote you as I please
DomiNate89@reddit
Okay bud, do as you please. If being a dick on online forums makes you feel better
cwatson214@reddit
lol pathetic
Saudi_polar@reddit
Can’t even wish for a hatchback these days smh
dfsaqwe@reddit
what about the iccu
aka_mank@reddit
Que es?
WCWRingMatSound@reddit
There’s a component in the electrical system that, if it fails, renders the vehicle immobile. There is no correlation as to why it fails, but there’s a higher failure rate than HMG is addressing.
In the great EV reset, Hyundai found a way to recreate the Theta-II ICE problem all over again.
nleksan@reddit
Got em!
dfsaqwe@reddit
god damn
DarkMatterM4@reddit
I am Chono.
LawApprehensive8364@reddit
Just goes to show you how dumb electric power is. Hyundai has never made a great gas motor.
ryencool@reddit
This car doesnt have a single pretty angle. Cool tech for a rounded off aztek though.
No-Afternoon8114@reddit
And the most ugly car design of 2025 goes to….
IndependentBrick3948@reddit
dope
jeffh19@reddit
This car appeals to me a ton, except I think I’ve read it has a fairly firm ride.
The main thing keeping me from buying one is that it’s a Hyundai. Not because of the former brand stigma, but of how their dealers/corporate operate and treat people. Some/all? of their EVs have a major component of the EV driveline fail and it seems like Hyundais literal plan is basically “screw over the customer as much as humanly possible until they get a lawyer involved” from everything I’ve read
Dealers and the way they handle things in general seem poor besides that, and my local Hyundai dealer is known as the shadiest dealership owner in town even on other brands that normally have a good reputation.
turb0_encapsulator@reddit
I still would rather have the 5N based on looks and practicality. Wish they could have done a more subtle pop-up wing on this.
blr1g@reddit
The N Performance Parts version looks mental:
https://www.hyundai.com/worldwide/en/n/ioniq-6-n-2025/n-performance-parts
Ruscidero@reddit
But you won’t forget that you own a Hyundai.
Pass.
Unoriginal-@reddit
This is genuinely the ugliest car since the Pontiac Aztek I’m surprised it’s still in production
altimax98@reddit
It’s crazy because the prototype was a cool futuristic look like something out of Cyberpunk, but then they just fumbled it with production (likely due to crash standards etc)
Krossrunner@reddit
That was never this car, you know that right? You’re thinking of the N Vision 74 which was a concept car fueled partially by hydrogen.
altimax98@reddit
Yeah the other guy was right I was talking about the Prophecy
strongmanass@reddit
They're talking about the Prophecy. That was the Ioniq 6 concept.
trail-g62Bim@reddit
I will admit it is ugly, but in a world where the cybertruck exists, this can't be #1.
Not that it matters...looks are all subjective anyway.
Unoriginal-@reddit
lol good one, that’s fair
Mojave_Idiot@reddit
There’s honestly probably room for discussion in which is uglier between these two vehicles honestly. And that is not praise of the cybertruck.
AkiraSieghart@reddit
This is what I'll be getting assuming they're available when my lease on my EV6 GT is up in July.
WIP1992@reddit
Cool that there’s some enthusiast EVs worth their salt but god that thing is ugly as hell
Nzash@reddit
I'm glad it looks unique because we need more unique looking cars, but wow this one isn't for me, it's like a dog arching its back to poop..
VedVyas818@reddit
this sub will complain it doesn't have a manual so no thanks LOL
PwncakeIronfarts@reddit
Yours (and now mine) are literally the only two comments out of currently 78 comments mentioning a manual transmission. It's an EV. Lol
VedVyas818@reddit
oh my god its a joke
PwncakeIronfarts@reddit
My bad, brother. Lol. I'm so used to Reddit being... Well, Reddit, that I forget jokes happen. Lol.
CrispityCraspits@reddit
The sub is complaining (correctly) that it likely has a major defect that Hyundai still doesn't know how to fix and basically can brick the car with no notice.
Kongary@reddit
I've joked over the years how certain Hyundais--like a friend's Sonata some years ago--seemed to have an odd piscine influence to the styling. But I like how this one just goes all in with it, at least in this performance version.
virak_john@reddit
600hp and only does 0-62 in 5 seconds?!!
Kaiathebluenose@reddit
It looks good in black. Its going to be too expensive but I'd be interested in a good lease deal
Nemo123161@reddit
I thought the ioniq 6 N embargo wasnt up for a few weeks?
The_GeneralsPin@reddit
Lol no
stinger_02in@reddit
Wow the cockroach is faster now.
DocPhilMcGraw@reddit
I don’t know about the future of it in other countries, but I’m guessing the Ioniq 6 may not exist for much longer in the states. It wasn’t that long ago they were offering lease deals on it for almost no money down and $199/month payments.
I will say the refreshed look helps, but I doubt it’s enough to sway that many buyers here.
Dirty_Dragons@reddit
The first half of the car looks great!
Then the rest...
SithSidious@reddit
This interests me so much more than the 5n. Wonder how quiet it is inside when you drive it in regular EV mode. Does it have a lot of wind/road/tire noise?
