I made depression era water pie

Felt inspired by the rough economy here in the states and decided to try an old recipe fitting for our current state of affairs.
Credit to Max Miller (Tasting History on YouTube) for the recipe
Tricky-Cheetah-8005@reddit
Yup depressing
miggyisalright@reddit
I see you’re a YouTube Scroller as well.
DavantRancher@reddit
Oh oh max killers videos are the best!! I made the key lime pie recently and had so much fun
maxkmiller@reddit
I think the middle aged guy at the pharmacy always hits on me, he commented on my name once and was like "I love that guy on youtube, he's not bad looking either!!" like cmon man just give me my antidepressants
death_is_acquittance@reddit
lmao of course its ssris
maxkmiller@reddit
not all antidepressants are ssris! I get mirtazapine
scarpas-triangle@reddit
I take mirtazapine occasionally for sleep and it gives me absolutely WILD dreams. I look forward to them haha.
coffee--beans@reddit
I take them every day and look forward to sleeping every day as a result. I love the crazy and vivid dreams I get
jungleass98@reddit
I get INSANE muchines. Absolutely puts weed to rest
sparklydildos@reddit
mirtazapine users unite!!! 🫡
BurmeciaWillSurvive@reddit
lmao of course it's NaSSAs

You know exactly
Kooky_Record_1803@reddit
Is it good enough to warrant the song Hayley Williams made about it?
death_is_acquittance@reddit
I am talking shit man I have been on zoloft so long it's just really rough without it at this point. I should research that.
saranwrappd@reddit
they put me on mirtazapine to get my appetite/weight up and switched me to trazodone for sleep
SurpriseMain@reddit
Don't forget the SNRIs! Or the TCAs, or heaven forbid your SPARIs!!
tealraven915@reddit
Or the MAOIs
Handsome_Channing@reddit
They’re talking about medication classifications, not islands.
jonesnori@reddit
He is easy on the eyes, all right! But entertaining and educational are even more important.

Watching the dread on his face before he took the bite of this pie was amazing lol
MariekeOH@reddit
Next up: hardtack! clack clack
LifesScenicRoute@reddit
Then we can round it up with some nice survival pemmican
Scary-Highway2951@reddit
I always have this thought in the back of my mind that says “you want to try pemmican” and I never do. But the curiosity never goes away. It hardly looks edible. But the thought persists.
LifesScenicRoute@reddit
I have that same thought, its one of those things that I know is just going to be terrible but like.. idk its the experience of how terrible it is yknow
Junkhead_88@reddit
This kind of thinking is how I ended up trying tamilok when I was in the Philippines. Totally worth the experience but it was exactly as terrible as I expected it to be and I would never ever eat it again ever.
Scary-Highway2951@reddit
Exactly! I want to know that it tastes terrible for myself lol.
Iced_Mochi_18@reddit
EXACTLY!! I thought I was alone on this
Scary-Highway2951@reddit
Honestly, I imagine it’ll taste like meat-flavored stale bread, but I still want to try it. I attempted to make it once and couldn’t get past the smell of melting tallow. It was nose-rending. Absolutely horrid. If you ever try to make it, don’t melt the beef tallow inside a house.
Sunnygirl66@reddit
RFK Jr. has entered the chat
imean_is_superfluous@reddit
Might be okay if you’re nearly starving
Lombarito@reddit
Tbh I think the purpose of pemmican is as a starter for stew which honestly sounds decent, but eating that shit raw has to be disgusting
ObjectiveEye1097@reddit
Yeah, I think about it and wonder. Same as I wonder about how bad portable *or pocket) soup would be since I saw a video about it and how Lewis and Clark took some with them on their journey.
QueezyF@reddit
I did that with posca once. It was fine, I’d rather just drink pickle juice though.
silver_tongued_devil@reddit
One of my friends saw a pemmican ad where they made it it look like ice cream.
lounging_marmot@reddit
Hi from the Yukon. Pemmican depends on who made it and what it was made from. Moose, bear fat, and lowbush cranberries is good. Bison, tallow, and Saskatoon berries is also good.
KingoftheMapleTrees@reddit
Are you team Pemmican, or Pemmican't?

QueezyF@reddit
He’s easily in my top 5 YouTube channels. My professor for Life in Ancient Rome actually used one of his videos on garum when we covered Roman food, I thought that was awesome.
BathSaltJello@reddit
I'll check that out. I love history.
tindonot@reddit
What??? How is there no hardtack gif.
Gingers_got_no_soul@reddit
I made hardtack once! It's bad!
boyproblems_mp3@reddit
Our teacher made some for us when we studied the Oregon Trail in school and it was so fucking gross
PawPrintLion@reddit
I genuinely had to stop making hardtack because I was eating too much of it

I hope you get the help you need.
MerryBerryMudskipper@reddit

SunwingArt@reddit (OP)
It's actually really easy to make and you can probably make it with what you already have at home.
Suspiciouscow2@reddit
I don’t have an oven. What should I do?
wutwutsugabutt@reddit
Someone told me yesterday you could cook food with an engine so like I guess slap it under the hood and go for a ride. No, I don’t believe it.
AnotherOneTossed@reddit
I have a friend who was in the army and said he would put a MRE in the engine compartment of the big truck (duece and a half I think) as they would use the heating pack in the MRE for something else.
freyalorelei@reddit
You can cook eggs that way. A whole pie would be a challenge, though.
GjonsTearsFan@reddit
I think it does actually work but with this particular recipe I think you’d end up sloshing the sugar water around and just ruining the pie and burning a bunch of crap to your engine and shit
capincus@reddit
You can, have done car engine hotdogs at a festival before.
mysterious_spirit420@reddit

epicamytime@reddit
stefanica@reddit
This is awesome. Sometimes my family wanders in to eat dinner and asks what we're having, as they are literally blankly staring at, idk, meatloaf and mashed potatoes. Take a wild guess, mfer.
National_Elk8445@reddit
I like to answer with "caviar, fois gras, and lobster thermidor."
eazypeazy303@reddit
You're not alone. Our 13 year old will literally walk over to a pot of spaghetti sauce and a pot of pasta boiling with FUCKING GARLIC BREAD IN THE OVEN!!! Take your WILDEST guess, man!
manic_popsicle@reddit
My kid did that last night. Walks in the kitchen and sees tortillas, cheese, lettuce, sour cream and hot sauce. Sees me standing over a pan of ground beef. “Hey Mom what are we eating?”
Sandisax1969@reddit
Would it be wrong to say “Sh-t on a shingle”? I’m a smartass, though.
Capital-Outcome-2528@reddit
I always loved when my kids would walk in the door from their other parents and ask what was for dinner. Like mf’er you just got here you ain’t been fed all weekend? How bout a hello?
stefanica@reddit
Aww, they just love your cooking more than at the other place! I loved my grandma for lots of reasons, but I almost can't think about her without thinking of something she was making. Even when it wasn't that great, it was great, y'know? (She was pretty ADD and also a bit narcoleptic)
Capital-Outcome-2528@reddit
Na they were teenagers then, they would get up from the table and want to know what the next meal was gonna be.
stefanica@reddit
My 12 yo son is like this. I hope he gets that growth spurt soon, he's getting a little tubby. 😂 But my husband and I were both like that in middle school, then shot up overnight.
Tess408@reddit
I swear as my son got older I'd notice one day that his nose changed and then boom, I was buying him new pants because his other ones are highwaters now.
4GotMy1stOne@reddit
"Poop on a stick" was always my answer then
Practical-Cow-4564@reddit
Next time tell them cold Pickled Pigs Feet.
-Vault-tec-101@reddit
My kid would do this all the time until I told him if he is that concerned about what I’m making for supper he can start helping me cook it, that way he always knows what’s for supper. He quickly stopped after having to peel some potatoes once.
ModestMeeshka@reddit
I tell my husband "top sirloin and couscous, pair delightfully with a side of caviar!" As I stir the Mac and cheese struggle dinner.

I can't remember which YouTube food channel just did a video on Water Pie, but they found out it wasn't invented during the Great Depression, rather well before it. I don't remember the exact year they said, but during the 1800s. That being said, it was baked a lit during the Great Depression.
brunckle@reddit
This is awesome
stirtheturd@reddit
Eventually water pie will only be enjoyed by the elite.
SunwingArt@reddit (OP)
Update! I just had the pie. It tasted mostly of pure sugar with a custard like consistency. The crust caramelized and tasted amazing, better than the filling itself. Overall better than I was expecting and would probably make it again as a joke.
missourimedreview@reddit
Is this Joyce’s recipe? 👀
tereyaglikedi@reddit
You should post it to r/tastinghistory! They would love it there.
Blueandigo@reddit
Sounds about right. My granddad was talking about these pies earlier this year when I was talking about depression good. We have a place in my hometown that makes dough burgers. It's just flour and little portions of meat and deep fried. So it looks like a big bear battered fish filet.
It was also a depression meal because the dough expanded to make you feel full.
I'm glad your pie turned out good!
chaosgremlin11@reddit
Please don't make recipes from Dylan Hollis especially the bad ones some parts of cooking history should be forgotten. Why must everything have jello including the salids...
Icy-Independent5250@reddit

Bitterqueer@reddit
Oh hey, Dylan Hollis made one of these!
TitShark@reddit
Is no one else ootl? What is this pie?
soitgoes_42@reddit
I like how you asked and not a single response gave clarification, only background/controversy.
It's made from just water, flour, sugar, vanilla and butter in a pie crust
PM_ME_YOUR__INIT__@reddit
So it's bread, in a tin
koJJ1414@reddit
no, because the filling uses flour to water proportions pf custard (without the egg), so it's still fully wet when taken out of the oven (except for the carmelized sugar layer) and only somewhat solidifies after thoroughly cooled
borgchupacabras@reddit
That doesn't sound very appetising tbh.
in_the_blind@reddit
Better than nothing!
cupcakefix@reddit
vanilla?!? in this economy? guess i’ll just have to enjoy my Air Pie
TitShark@reddit
Ah, that’s what I was looking for!
turquoise_amethyst@reddit
It’s basically sugar gravy that’s been baked
JohannesVanDerWhales@reddit
Yeah would be nice to get a tl;dr on the video.
VereDiz@reddit
Tl;dw:
The pie is not actually from the Great Depression of the 1920s-1930s, but from another depression era of the late 1880s (at least based on the earliest written record we have of it)
It's meant as a cheap alternative to custard pies and the like, because pies (both savoury and sweet) were all the rage back then
freyalorelei@reddit
Tasting History is a YouTube channel where the host recreates various historical dishes and gives mini history lessons to explain the background of the recipe. It's educational and entertaining content, and Max Miller is an engaging host, not to mention easy on the eyes...he's an ex-Disney employee and literally performed as Prince Charming at their parks.

To everyone who likes the water pie: try vinegar pie! I love it, my mom used to make it all the time
EmperorDurrell@reddit
Isnt that whole video about how this is NOT a depression era recipe, and debunking the viral claims that it is?
Snoo55931@reddit
Yeah, I think it’s a “when you’re poor” pie that was made prominent by the depression. Either way, it’s a decent pie! I like that you can kinda make it whatever flavor you want.
FattySnacks@reddit
How is that different from being a depression era meal?
Snoo55931@reddit
I didn’t necessarily mean that it was any different. Or different enough to matter. Just that it was not a product of the depression and originated in the late 1800s.
nothisistheotherguy@reddit
Water pie, chess pie, and vinegar pie all predate the depression but definitely come from low income eras/areas. Have always wanted to try them
garretj84@reddit
Vinegar pie is one of my absolute favorites both in taste and ease of making, and chess pie can be pretty great as well. So I’m very curious about this water pie.
Original-Serve3571@reddit
Idk man, aren't chess peices expensive and hard to chew? Sounds like a choking hazard to me..
catlover79969@reddit
Ohhh I’ve seen water pie but never vinegar pie?
Frans4Life@reddit
im not american, but cant "depression era" just refer to a time that there was an economic depression, and not necessarily during the Great Depression? if so the title is correct right?
myfriendpickles@reddit
In the US, when we say depression era, we typically mean the Great Depression
rUafraid@reddit
yeah i'm like i literally just watched this video and it goes back to the late 1800's
OddRoyal7207@reddit
Lol wtf, I literally just now had a video suggested to me on yt about water pie.

SunwingArt@reddit (OP)
It was like a vanilla custard. The crust was really tasty and had a cinnamon-esque flavor after it caramelized.
Pittiemom621@reddit
I made the same thing last week. It was better than I thought it would be.
spidermom4@reddit
Every thanksgiving my family would make a depression meal my great grandmother came up with during the great depression to serve as a side on Thanksgiving. We call it "cracker butter noodles." Basically you boil egg noodles, drain them and add a lot of butter, and then add crushed saltines on top. It was always meant to be a, "See how good we have it now? Be thankful we can afford better food now." And my mom would always tell any visitors the story of her grandma making the noodles herself, and serving it alongside a chicken of hers she butchered, and an apple pie from their tree. Only problem with that is we LOVED it and requested cracker butter noodles at every holiday.

That's almost the same thing as a "Sugar Cream Pie" which uses milk or cream instead of water. I've made it many times as my Mom used to make it when I was a kid growing up in Indiana. It's the officially recognized state pie of Indiana and also known as "Desperation Pie" for its use of minimal pantry staples.

applesauceforlife@reddit
I just finished watching Max Miller's video on this. I open Reddit and see this. Crazy.
sam120310@reddit
is this like vinegar pie? if so i make mine in a casserole dish and no pie crust and it’s SOO GOOD. i grew up w my grandma calling it peach cobbler without the peaches and i recently became obsessed w it again lol
Piranja_@reddit
Wth is a water pie? 😅
donuttrackme@reddit
That looks great! What's shitty about it?
treixxreaixx@reddit
Man there's a lot of "depression food" popping in my screen lately. It's a shame they aren't easy-making food for depressed people
Enclave2287@reddit
SeaAware3305@reddit
Ah a fellow Tasting History fan I see
LunarBahamut@reddit
It looks good? I don't see anything wrong with this.
YesImKeithHernandez@reddit
Started getting served this british cook on youtube reels who made one of these. He mentioned it tasting pretty good especially with the context that you wouldn't be exposed to much else sweet with consistency when these were common back in the day
CarlySortof@reddit
Ummm ackshually if you watched the tasting history video you’d know it’s actually earlier than the great depression!
JadedBumblebee396@reddit
Probably just needs a lil whip cream

Water Pie aka Joyce and the pie that took over threads for a week
CeeArthur@reddit
That's so funny, I was just watching YouTube videos about depression era food last night and kept coming across "water pie"

Modern problems require modern solutions
No_Poet_7244@reddit
Hey, I feel like I’ve entered my own depression era just seeing this.
OrionGrant@reddit
When done right, these are good. I've made a few of them, the trick is to make them not too sweet, which is hard sometimes.
Reload86@reddit
Max Miller? Great choice. Huge fan of his work.
Cogester@reddit
Someone watched the new Tasting History episode 🫡
elibutton@reddit
it looks depressing, but how was the taste?
ayrek@reddit
I just knew this was going to be Tasting History inspired!
sweetfruitloops@reddit
Sooo… how was it?
fanceypantsey@reddit
We’re definitely going into the next depression so please post the recipe and how it tastes even though by the time we need it I don’t think we’ll care anymore
Bhanumayi@reddit
Thanks for this. I had no idea. There was such a thing I’m going to try it.
Jeff_Bezhoes@reddit
Interesting. It does look fairly cheap to make.
leclercwitch@reddit
Did you watch the tasting history video?
SunwingArt@reddit (OP)
Yeah I did. I love that channel a lot. I know this isn't technically from the great depression but I felt like it was representative of that time for sure.
leclercwitch@reddit
Sorry I didn’t see your caption! I watch all of his videos and I’ve heard of this before so it was interesting to see how it was actually made 😄
Turd_Ferguson420@reddit
Is this before or after baking? Doesn’t seem like you filled it up enough tbh. Sadly I’ve seen a few water pie videos & they look a bit different than yours.
SunwingArt@reddit (OP)
This pic was taken after I just took it out of the oven, it's thickened up a bit but the filling did evaporate a bit in the oven. This was my first time baking a pie so please excuse my amateur effort lol
Turd_Ferguson420@reddit
Hey I’ve never tried making any sort of pie so you’re levels above me!
Brightsidedown@reddit
I think it looks good.
5ma5her7@reddit
Coincidentally, I just watched a video about Water pie on YouTube a few hours ago...
Stapityou@reddit
We are in a depression era so this is appropriate for the times
