Is hypnosis still a thing?

I remember 10 years ago in the 90 hypnosis was everywhere. It was a major plot point in movies and TV, it was a medical treatment for all sorts of things, especially addiction and psychological issues, and it was a fear of the pearl clutchers that some nefarious person was going to hypnotize their children.
Was all this just a fad that has passed, or am I just in a different bubble now and don't see it?

Office Space (1999) was the last time a character getting hypnotized was a major plot point afair
I think Penn Gillette did a bullshit episode on it once in the mid aughts or something
Can anyone think of another example

Jennifer Aniston is currently dating a hypnotist.
mack_dd@reddit
Almost ironic, considering she got her major break in Office Space, where the main character became who is was because he got hypotized š¤£

My Daddy spent the last decade of his life as a professional hypnotist and spiritual guide. It's still a very active community ā„
marbotty@reddit
Did you ever let him hypnotize you and did it actually have an effect on you?
Serious_Pea42@reddit
Well yes of course I did, he was free for me lol! The most remarkable/ immediate effect was in 2015 he did a four hour hypnosis session for me. I smoked a Marlboro light right beforehand, I was a two pack a day smoker. Plus if you've ever tried to quit smoking you know once you have a smoke at all you are done not smoking for the day lol. Anyway, I don't remember much except some stuff about mentally climbing stairs I wanted to clean. I don't know. I do know I walked out of his session and never smoked again.
I really miss my daddy š Thanks!

I was turned into a chicken at the county fair in 1997 and they never turned me back. Hypnosis is very much still a thing for me.

One could argue that Fox News is an entire network based on hypnosis that ruined a whole generation. Maybe itās not gone after all.Ā

Often misattributed to Goebbels, but no less evil regardless:

Itās a fair assessment.

The Scientologists still use it heavily in their brainwashing techniques.

We had an entertaining hypnotist show every year in my home town at the high school that anyone could go to. They took volunteers and would always help one person with a phobia and make one person dance on stage.
Fast forward a couple of decades, I say don't knock it if you need it. I developed a terrible driving phobia after nearly hydroplaning into the back of a mack truck one day. I had panic attacks WHILE driving every day. I stopped driving anywhere except work because the local public trans doesn't run early enough for my job. I became a recluse for a year. Exposure therapy did nothing. I was desperate, so I eventually tried a hypnosis, had to pay a bunch out of pocket but my life was full of fear every time I was behind the wheel. In 3 sessions it was gone. It was super expensive and worth every penny. I'd use it if I had substance abuse or ED problems. It really helped with overall anxiety too, just as a side effect.
Disneyhorse@reddit
I did six sessions to try and handle my needle phobia. It didnāt work. But it was VERY interesting to experience and worth the price of admission for that alone. I did a year of CBT to get my Covid shot and that worked moderately okay.

Hold it up in front of another person's face
Swing it back and forth and say "You are getting very sleepy"

The documentary Office Space taught us that you have to make sure your hypostasis didn't die before snapping his fingers or you're just stuck like that until some other catastrophic emotional event happens.

About 10 years ago I went on a cruise and there was a hypnotist. And I fulfilled my dream of being called on stage. And it didnāt work on me at all.
Frankfusion@reddit
There's tons of YouTube videos that use hypnosis for all sorts of things like putting smoking drinking or helping you to lose weight. On top of that something called hypnobirthing has actually become popular in the last few years. Basically for women who want to more natural birth they go in red hypnosis to control the pain. Apparently it's used by a lot of women.

Hypnosis is used today for past life regression
The conclusion was that you can recall your past lives in detail
The problem was some folks wrote books about them and came to the conclusion that āyou never die, isnāt that greatā
No, no it isnāt. That completely dismissed Christianity and it sounds like you donāt have a choice.
The other problem is, we donāt know if these folks are telling the truth or if their imagination runs wild. The closest weāve ever come to communicating with the past, unrelated to past life, is āDodleston Messages," a 1984 incident where a man named Ken Webster in England allegedly received messages on his computer from a 16th-century man.
Two_Eagles@reddit
Hypnosis isnāt in any way needed to completely dismiss Christianity. Low level critical thinking skills are sufficient.Ā
Money_Magnet24@reddit
Christianity isnāt the American Protestant satanic shit show.
Iām sorry this country has been hijacked by āconservativesā
sumthymelater@reddit
No. Past life regression is not a thing. No one has concluded this.
Money_Magnet24@reddit
Like I said
We donāt know if these folks are telling the truth
Iām getting downvoted because people donāt read the full context

I remain unconvinced that hypnosis is really a thing. That's why it's always heavily caveated that "it only works is you WANT to be hypnotized". That reminds me of Jim Carey teaching self defense. If the system ONLY works in a very specific way with a very cooperative subject, the system doesn't really work at all. People who are "hypnotized" for shows really just want to play along with the show for fun. People who are "hypnotized" to help with more serious things like addiction are likely allowing a placebo effect to govern their behavior. To be clear, I don't have a problem with either of those things and I'm genuinely happy if that's what helps someone break an addiction. That still doesn't convince me that hypnosis is real.

One night about 20 years ago my partner and I went out to a hypnotist show, like they do in Vegas, where audience members come up and get hypnotized and participate.
Turns out i am VERY easily hypnotized. And I felt very comfortable and we had a great time. We were so fascinated that we came back the next night and brought friends and did it again. I actually have a copy of the show on VHS!
Maybe a year or two later I was at an impasse after working on defeating the phobia I had had for decades (driving). After trying literally everything else, I saw an ad for hypnosis to quit smoking or lose weight, and decided to give it a call.
After just two sessions, my life immediately turned around. I was able to get my license, and the effects are still present in my day-to-day life, or anytime I need to drive. I still have no idea how hypnosis works, but for me, it WORKS!

I was just wondering about this last night! It was one of those things that the psychologist character on every soap opera used when they needed to get to the bottom of something.

Last summer I did a 6-week hypnosis for stress relief class. It was really cool and very helpful. They also do one for chronic pain relief.

My parents tried everything to get me to stop sucking my thumb. Including this. Did not work. Guy was a loser. You could tell he was just one of those washed up drama students who thought he was so edgy and alternative.
DocWednesday@reddit
I donāt think itās as popular as it once was. Iāve seen it a few times in recent years as entertainment at large events (conferences, parties).
I was hypnotized at a Christmas party once along with a few other people. I would kind of describe it as being given permission to let go. The hypnotist had us act out some funny scenes. I was fully aware the whole time (no memory lapses). It was a lot of fun.
At the ones Iāve been to, the hypnotist will do a few things to select people from the crowd. It was explained that it works best on people with good imaginations and that if a person is dead set against being hypnotized, itās not going to work.
I remember it being a thing years ago for people who wanted to quit smoking. I donāt think itās as popular now with the kinds of nicotine replacements and medications available. However, if it works for some people, thereās not really too much in the way of drawbacks in terms of risks besides any monetary costs and time.
A lot of TV and plot points around hypnosis were getting people to go into a trance and do evil things (like in the Naked Gun, when Reggie Jackson grabs a gunā¦I must kill the queen.). I donāt think thatās possible in real life; I think itās just a convenient trope to advance a plot.
cthulhu_on_my_lawn@reddit
Stage hypnosis is basically a way to make people feel less embarrassed about doing improv.
Sudden_Airport_7469@reddit

I just heard a commercial on the radio for a guy that tours around doing hypnosis for quitting smoking and weight loss. He was doing a few seminars in my city. So I guess it's still around a little bit.

It still exists, some counselors are trained in it. Itās just not on tv because that kind of āhypnosisā was probably a scam.
Sufficient_Turn_9209@reddit
I think it's still being used for substance cessation, you just don't hear about it so much. The pearl clutchers are worried about psychedelic assisted therapy now, which is way more successful.
jtho78@reddit
I used it to help me stop drinking. I was skeptical but it worked for my cousin so I thought genetically it might work for me too. And I was at the point of trying anything.
It was four sessions and after the first one I had instant results; if I imagined drinking my throat would close up. It was crazy. That was two years ago and not a drop.

I remember in the early 90s every sitcom had a "the gang goes to a hypnotist" episode right alongside "they try sushi (always fugu) for the first time"
