kids these days.. it's all "core" this, and "coded" that.. but damn does this make me feel old.

used to make those bracelets out of hairties and rubberbands, they were diy to begin with.. why does this make me feel so old 🫠
urfriendflicka@reddit
It's really wierd when my daughter does her online shopping and everything in her cart is things I either wanted to wear or exactly what I did wear. Especially when she buys true "vintage" stuff and buys things I actually owned once upon a time. The kid is quite frustrated at my need to purge. She wanted a purse the other day and I told her I actually owned the same exact purse until we moved like 5 yrs ago and I donated it to goodwill. I had actually used it as a diaper bag bc diaper bags just didn't fit my aesthetic and I really didn't need or use anything that big anymore.
scifithighs@reddit
I've been winning at being Auntie by bequeathing the 15-year-old in my life all my old studded bracelets, goth gear, wide leg jeans, and band buttons 😅
nzungu69@reddit (OP)
right‽ my daughter is obssesed with "vintage" flannel shirts, which are surprisingly hard to find these days.. if only i had kept all my old ones instead of ripping them up for workshop rags over the years 🫠
urfriendflicka@reddit
My neice would kill for some of the flannels I wore in middle school. My daughter prefers the more feminine and/or emo looks from my late high school/ early college years. She frequently says she wishes I was a teen mom so that she had more access to the styles and music that were popular then when they first came out...and I would have known to pass my cooler stuff on to her 😂
ailish@reddit
I enjoy the resurgence of 90s culture. At least for now I'm not "out of touch old person". I'm "cool hop old person."
kalebdraws@reddit
Yeah, i get to wear baggy pants again! And actually find places to buy them.
Opening_Stranger_925@reddit
My 14 yo is fully embracing 90s culture in terms of music and clothing. I’m here for it .😂
ailish@reddit
I love hearing that. It's so fun watching these kids enjoy the same things we did. When they grow up they'll have the same memories we did as far as music goes.
nzungu69@reddit (OP)
i've enjoyed it too, but i know it won't be long before they change what it is, what i am with will no longer be it, and whst is it will become weird and scary to me..

Yeah, but at least they have their memories with it now, too. We have that in common. I'm disappointed with the way they just wore the band shirts without ever listening to the music, but whatever. At least I enjoyed the view for a while. This has been so much better than those diaper pants everybody was wearing before it. Here's to hoping a lot of people just keep wearing it, and whatever replaces it isn't something annoying to look at.
ailish@reddit
I worked with an NB person who was 19 at the time and they were in love with Queen. A little before our time but still an amazing band. They listened to them all the time.

lol you sound like my uncle when he saw me in a pink floyd shirt the first time. "i bet you don't even know who sid barret is, poser".
let the kids enjoy things 😆
muhredditone@reddit
Yeah, I think about that, but it was different then. They were asking us questions that have nothing to do with enjoying the music. These kids don't even know the music. It's just a shirt. They bought and wear the shirt, but still don't know the music. That's sad to me. They wasted the opportunity to enjoy the meaningful part of that trend. Disappointing.
nzungu69@reddit (OP)
their choice, and their loss 🤷♂️
i would have forced them to listen, personally 🙃
Platt_Mallar@reddit
My daughter loves wearing Nirvana, Metallica, and AC/DC shirts, but she also listens to them.

Same, doesn't help that I have the same beard and hair. Usually my hair is in a pony tail though, so then I look a bit less homeless.

Sounds nice. Would brush your beard for you.

I eat lunch in a deli next to a high school and it is full of teens during lunch hour. It’s more intimidating then it should be, but also they look like we looked and none of them are ever on their phones. Kind of gives me hope.
StandardStrategy1229@reddit
I’ve been seeing more and more teens just sitting and conversing myself.
Scrabblewiener@reddit
Our age group must be doing something right. I have a 18,16,14 year olds and the worse things they’ve done aren’t even close to just my regular day shenanigans. We aren’t even the best examples all the time but they got thier own good things going on. I say our age group cause it’s not even just my kids, their friends are all really good kids too. They are in a small school district with very few bad apples and they don’t shun the bad kids but kind of just show them love and acceptance yet at the same time keep them at a distance. Like after school special kids. The kids are gonna be alright. Just hope we can fix our society up well enough for them to take over not such a mess.

Let me tell you how hyped I was at age 19 to find out that the buckets of frosting I worked with in the bakery were sealed with a thin black rubber gasket the equivalent of a king-sized jelly bracelet.
I see your bracelet and I raise you a necklace.
Slap a couple of those babies on next to my extra large ball chain necklace, and double a few up for my wrists and I was good to go, crusty frosting be damned.
Jcaquix@reddit
Ok but what is it? Are they hair ties?
Schwimbus@reddit
My guy act like you've seen a jelly bracelet before
ButterscotchAware402@reddit
"Been seeing this around in older hardcore/metalcore band pictures and I was wondering how I could get the name to buy one or if there was a chance to DIY it."
Oh, sweet baby angel...
Thanks for the flashback... that's a memory that had been tucked away in the vault. Since late '90s/early '00s hardcore fashion is apparently coming back I think it's time for a new pair of Saucony Jazz sneakers.
Selmarris@reddit
Oh man I loved mine. They were burgundy.
5th_gen_woodwright@reddit
I had those too!
Schwimbus@reddit
Oh was I supposed to have stopped wearing those? My heart was broken when they stopped making low-pros a couple years ago but damned if the pair I have aren't holding up well.
(Okay I lied I did stop wearing them for a while but when I saw a color that wasn't garish I started wearing them again. And then I bought an EXTRA garish pair for good measure)
nzungu69@reddit (OP)
haha yes sauconies! also converse one stars, and to a lesser extent doc martins. man i wish i kept my old gear.

Actually I'm not super clear on those bracelets tbh
nzungu69@reddit (OP)
you can make them out of anything, but the best ones used these silicone "jelly" bands.
Illustrious-Low3948@reddit
Memory unlocked. Reminds me of those mini pacifier charms we used to wear (was that a trend in the US as well)?
SignoreBanana@reddit
Why? Just like... a thing?
apf6@reddit
Just looked cool I think. Fashion in the 80s and 90s involved wearing lots of accessories.
nzungu69@reddit (OP)
yeah! it was a trend for like a decade.
cbih@reddit
Kids would have whole arms of those
CrippleWitch@reddit
Remember those jelly bracelets? They came in a million colors and for a while there was some weird moral panic about how different colors meant different sex acts or levels of drug involvement and parents tried to ban them from schools?
Anyway the black jelly bracelets were part of the alt music aesthetic and you could weave two of them together to make this look. You could weave a bunch together and make it look all loopy.
SignoreBanana@reddit
I think this whole phenomenon flew right over my little rural town I grew up in.
LardLad00@reddit
I thought it was a younger millennial thing. Zero exposure here.
musical_shares@reddit
I was in my early 20s when the jelly bracelet phenomenon started around me, prior to that though we were all sporting the pantyhose material “hot loops” in the early 90s.
PupperoniPoodle@reddit
I wonder why these haven't come back, when the tiny rubber bands have, and looms and crochet are back, these fit right in the middle of all of those.

Now imagine our parents being on reddit talking about our bell bottoms, tie dye and daisy chains.
urfriendflicka@reddit
I remember when bell bottoms came back and my mother told me how cool they were when she was my age and she used to love them too. I decided that since my mother didn't have a cool cell in her body there was no way I was jumping on the bell bottoms train. If my mother wore or would have worn if she could afford something that became trendy, I stayed away. My daughter however asks me if whatever she is looking at is authentic enough or just a 2025 take on the look...and if a look is something I look back at and cringe, lol
PupperoniPoodle@reddit
Haha, and here I "yelled" at my mom for not saving her bell bottoms.
heycarrieanne@reddit
I was so lucky, my mom saved two pairs! One was brown, one was rust orange, and they were 100% polyester. They were awful and I loved them!
urfriendflicka@reddit
Lol, if I wasn't so he'll bent on being nothing like my mom, I probably would have too. My friend had a pair that I loved, but as soon as my mother tried to convince that she was cool bc she wore them when they were in style in the 70s, I knew I was never going to own a pair.😂
