Is a Synology DS1010+ still good in 2025?

Hi there, I'm looking for a NAS , quickly. In the past, I made several DIY NAS with different OS, but because I have too much gear and solutions to maintain at home, I don't really have the time anymore, and I'm a bit tired. (Just home assistant by itself take my a lot of time to maintain)
I can buy a Synology DS1010+ with 15to of storage (I don't know the disks age and runtimes, but tested ok as the seller says) for 200€.
Having a quick look, the articles I found are from 2010. It has 2 gigabit nic, and 1gb of ram if I'm right.
It's seems to be a bit energy hungry (I live in France and electricity's costs are important here).
I don't really care of all the DSM features (the apps etc..) as I have a proxmox but that's a plus.
If an "embedded" computers backup/sync app works, that's great but not strictly necessary.
My main question is: Is that Nas still ok in 2025? What about the security? Clearly, that would mainly be data storage and movies for the leftover space.
Thanks for any help!

You NEED to know this since you're buying used.
buying used storage without a reliable warranty is a losing game. It's a gamble and an expensive one when you lose.

Yes I'm waiting for his answer ;) I also know that, but I'm thinking: 5 disks in Raid5 for example, I may have "a bit of time" no? Like buying a new disk this month, and another one next month etc..?
I really know this is not the best, I work in IT engineering, but I mean in the meantime? I could do backups for now (for example), as I have a raid 1 in my desktop, and already doing backups on several places, you know what I mean?
What I ask is, is that deal correct? (If you don't care about the disks and use them for movies or whatever non critical data?) I mean that can be 15to "for free" for my Jellyfin.
The thing is I have dozens of big disks (all young and ok), but most are in different sizes, (because from different desktops or whatever,) so I can't do a DIY NAS with those while waiting to buy proper new NAS disks because of that. JBOD isn't really an option for backups, I already use this for my movies but still, that's a bit annoying to have 7 shares lol

Rebuilding parity when replacing a drive and bringing into part of the RAID array is where you are most likely to lose another disk. It thrashes the other drives for hours, they get more use those hours than the previous year as home storage.
So you could use it, but replacing 1 drive at a time gives you 5 times to lose all the data. You aren't buying a reliable $300 NAS with drives, you are buying a $300 EOL NAS enclosure.

You're right (and I know that, shame on me)
Especially with NAS that old, I don't know how long a rebuilding takes on average on those.
Sorry for my ignorance, but what do you mean by EOL? I'm french and I don't get it haha

Look for other options. I suggest finding a nas that is still supported and buy new hard drives. Nas doesn't need to be powered 24/7 unless you need it to.

If you want a Synology, the Synology subreddit may have good used recommendations.

In fact, I want the simplest and cheapest ahah Syno is cool because of their os, GUI services etc.. but that's the Apple of Storage IMO. i have many low power motherboards, almost CPU and ram overkill for some. I have something like 20to of ram in total at home because of my job (they throw out 16go sticks because hey, we change hardware every 3 years) so, many setups I have are ram maxed out, instead of having the sticks in a cabinet.
Anyway, a solution like Openmediavault or whatever is alright too, but I have to have a look about SAS/Raid cards.
I also have several SAS backplanes with lots of sas drives, I'm thinking of using them too.
I could buy a good and new NAS, but really, that's because of money issues at the moment, I don't really have a choice

Also, the 1010+ model uses version 5.2 of their software suite which is EOL and I don't see any upgrades to later versions offered for this model. I think Synology is up to version 7 now.
Anyway, this represents a potential for security vulnerabilities and you don't need that if you're already babysitting 10 to 15 year old hardware.

This. That's exactly what I was thinking but wanted to be sure. But if the disks are recent and good, only the disks could be a good deal nah? Even 200€ for 5X3to (if ok) that isn't bad no? (I always bought new ones before for storage)

Unless you have an immediate need for storage I'd pass.
You never know with hard drives. One day they're fine, then the next you're spending more to replace a drive than you paid for the NAS and have to spend a whole day rebuilding the RAID array and hoping all that thrashing around won't break another drive.
Also, considering where you live, figure in the power draw. I'd really be more interested in an SSD solution even if the up front cost is higher.

Thank you, I think you're right.
Not a real immediate need, but my previous backup solution is dead, so I manually backup, which is boring and day after day I'm like "I really need to do something" you know?
So as I saw this offer, I thought it would be good to have another advice.
For SSDs, if you know a good place/shop for them as it's quickly a big price for big storage units (sorry for my English). Also if you know models that are reliable and quite cheap I take it.
I kindly ask because the more I'm getting old, the less I have patience to do weeks of comparison, reviews etc.. for every single thing I buy.
I'm like hmm 45 browser tabs opened.. pfff, let's what Linus haha
