KDE connect is the GOAT

After years of muscle memory on my phone lockscreen pattern, for whatever reason, today my brain decided to have permanent amnesia. Im now 8 hours away from next attempt and it looked like im gonna have to reset my phone along with all the data on it.
I tried normally connecting usb, adb, nothing worked. That is when i realised i could try to access my phone's storage right through dolphin because i have kde connect installed. it worked. i would have like kde connect to unlock my phone as well but, worst case scenario avoided atleast. i can back up all the important stuff. its a bit slow over wifi, but atleast it works.

I just wish KDE Connect wouldn't drain my battery so incredibly hard. Or at least stopping it on the phone would actually do something -apparently it either doesn't stop or immediately restarts.
I would love to use it, but I unfortunately need to keep it uninstalled.
MatheusWillder@reddit
On my phone I had the opposite problem, where the system would aggressively stop the app when it went to background for some time. So I had to unlock the phone and open the app every time to be able to sync or do anything. I tried disabling "battery optimizations" in Apps>KDE Connect>Battery so it could run in the background without restrictions, but it didn't worked.
Obviously it's not KDE Connect's fault here, but if it has excessive battery usage issues, it may have been the cause of this behavior from the system.
OP, forgetting a lockscreen pattern used for years like that is not normal. You should seek medical help.

same for me, thats why kde connect was my last resort. my first attempts and making kde connect work failed afterall. it took a while to search and connect automatically
Omer-Ash@reddit
I keep KDE Connect on 24/7 and my phone's battery usage stats shows KDE at the bottom of battery-draining apps. It's not that battery draining.
qwesx@reddit
If I keep it on it's consistently on top of battery usage for me.
The_Brovo@reddit
Just checked mine, <1% usage and its on constantly. The app has a notification when nothing is connected when my pc is off
Ill-Nobody@reddit
KDE Connect is seriously underrated for how seamlessly it integrates devices. Have you tried using the remote input feature for presentations?
QuickSilver010@reddit (OP)
no. because there is no linux support for epson iprojection app
phase222@reddit
If you suddenly forgot your lockscreen pattern that you've had for years and couldn't figure it out after many failed attempts, you should probably see a doctor.
Seriously.
Vivid_Tradition9278@reddit
LMAO. The muscle memory thing is too real. Sometimes you forget the most basic things you've been doing all your life.
I once forgot how I used to type (not standard touch typing, but something I'd cobbled together over the years) and had to hunt and peck for two days straight until I could suddenly type as well again ¯_(ツ)_/¯
QuickSilver010@reddit (OP)
i did have it for a couple of years. but its not like i enter it every time. its got a system that asks for fingerprint each time. it only asks for pattern once every two or so days. its probably more like after using it for so long it became muscle memory, i entered it subconciously. until today, when i could no longer re enter it. every time i enter it wrong i do feel like something is quite off as im doing it, but i could never tell how
Munalo5@reddit
It is a vulgar expression but it is called a "brain fart".
DeskFuture5682@reddit
Ow my freaking ears!!
QuickSilver010@reddit (OP)
doesnt sound vulgur. and a brain fart certainly cant last an entire day

It has happened to me too but I managed to recall the password after like an hour. I still don't understand what happened to me that day.
count_zero11@reddit
Sounds like the twisties
human-rights-4-all@reddit
I had this with my debit card pin once and the more i tried to think about the numbers, the more I confused myself. It's like a word that's on the tip of your tongue.
I did something else and 2 hours later the muscle memory was back.
Relax and try again after a while.
If it happens again or the memory doesn't come back, then yes, have it checked out.
QuickSilver010@reddit (OP)
i tried relaxing for the past 8 hours now onto the next 8 hours i guess.
human-rights-4-all@reddit
Can you try to get your muscle memory back by using the lockscreen of another phone?
pythosynthesis@reddit
It happens. Had a 5 digit pin for long time and then, at some point in my younger years, I just blanked out. Day later it came back. Maybe there's something in my brain, but this happened a few decades ago. Also not the only one whom something like this happened. It's how I learned that human memory is not very reliable.
bindiboi@reddit
I forgot my bank user name that I used daily to log in (8 digits) when I was 20y/o. Didn't autosave because security and whatnot.
It came from muscle memory and I didn't even think about it when typing... and then suddenly I just forgot it and couldn't "look it up" from my brain. I tried for a day or two, until I had to go physically to the bank to reset it.
Now I use autosave. Still alive 10 years later btw.
Horrih@reddit
That's one of the pros of using a google pixel. The fingerprint sensor is so bad that I have to type it half the time, muscle memory is now built deep
IHateNumbers234@reddit
Do most phones not force you to enter the passcode/pattern every 72 hours to force you to remember it? Mine does.
Vivid_Tradition9278@reddit
Mine does too!
g0ndsman@reddit
My pixel 7 had an awful fingerprint sensor for unlocking the screen. It worked maybe 30% of the time. On the other hand it worked pretty reliably to unlock secure apps (e.g. my password manager). I never understood why the behavior was so different.
I now have a pixel 10 and the sensor is finally fine. It works basically every time.
BobTreehugger@reddit
I miss the fingerprint sensor on the back so bad.
mhogag@reddit
The fingerprint sensor on my old Oneplus 6 was on the back, and it was the best thing I ever used. In-screen sensors work half the time, and laptop sensors need 10 tries to work. That shit was magic.
crazedizzled@reddit
Same! Though I have a Samsung S23 now. It's just annoying that I can't run a good screen protector or else the fingerprint scanner sucks.
inkjod@reddit
What may help: Register the fingerprints again after installing the screen protector.
Doing that, I've never had a problem.
CrossyAtom46@reddit
My old screen protector was so thick, so I couldn't even re-register
floss1nn@reddit
Registering same finger twice (as a separate finger) helps getting more hits too
CrazyKilla15@reddit
It was so nice being able to just pick up the phone and unlock it in one smooth motion
IllustriousCareer6@reddit
Really not my experience at all
ionburger@reddit
ive been using pixel phones for years and have never had an issue with the fingerprint reader, what problems do people have with them?
Independent_Cat_5481@reddit
One thing I've noticed, the Samsung sensors are capacitive and don't work at all when your finger is wet, which makes sense. But the optical sensors on the pixels work waaay better when my finger is a bit wet and struggle when it's really dry. No idea why but it seems to be very consistent like that.
human-rights-4-all@reddit
I installed GrapheneOS and enabled the setting to have either: - a long password OR - my fingerprint and a pin
I need the password BFU (before first unlock) and to unlock my Keepass-Database, so I don't forget it.
svtguy88@reddit
Ha, at least I'm not the only one.
Maleficent-One1712@reddit
You should visit a doctor if you forgot something after 8 years of use, that's not a normal thing.
Latlanc@reddit
KDE Connect is amazing... at being an attack vector LOL.
If you ever need to view your files on the same network, just setup a temporary ftp connection.
the_abortionat0r@reddit
You're not that bright are you?
Latlanc@reddit
Typical redditor answer, smarter than thou lol.
AntLive9218@reddit
Joke's on you, that's what KDE connect does.
Just instead of using the outdated and unencrypted FTP protocol, it uses SFTP.
Latlanc@reddit
KDE Connect copies password over to phone's clipboard. It contains so many useless features, most of them don't even work crossplatform (thankfully).
Jokes on you if you can't grasp what I meant in a general sense and go straight for the nitpick - OF COURSE you should encrypt your connection. Typical redditor.
Zaev@reddit
I just wish the remote input feature wasn't so janky. It's got about the worst-feeling "phone as a touchpad" of anything I've tried, but is also the one I've found to connect most reliably on Linux.
I dunno whether there's something wrong with my setup or if it's just like this, but it frequently seems like buttons get "stuck" on, causing frequent unintentional click-drags, double taps don't work, had to change the right click gesture from 2 to 3 fingers, 'cause two finger scrolling was causing a right click every time as well.
It's so close to being the greatest (for me), though
ahfoo@reddit
I don´t see what the intentions were with KDE Connect. In order to get to a PC, it has to be on the wifi network but in the cases I come acrosss the wired and wireless networks in a building are not on the same network so KDE Connect can´t see the desktops which is where the files are. It can only connect to notebooks. The big storage is going to be on the wired network.
This doesn´t seem very useful.
AntLive9218@reddit
That's not actually correct. The PC can be completely unaware of WiFi even existing. You have the following options:
Connect to a regular network where everything will just work.
Connect to a restricted network where broadcast may not work, but you can give the destination IP address to KDE connect to establish the connection.
Connect to a segregated network where it's up to you to get around limitations, and connect based on the IP address. There's no magic solution for this, some such networks don't even allow internet access.
Try the experimental Bluetooth connection.
Sure, it would be a lot better if KDE connect would also have all the P2P goods like Syncthing, so it could pass through multiple networks, break down NATs in many cases, and even fall back to relay servers, but it's not there (yet).
It's already good enough for tons of use cases, and once it supports calling on the connected host, I wouldn't even want to fiddle with my phone anymore when in front of a PC.
the_abortionat0r@reddit
Wait till you are sober to think about this.
KDE connect works because most networks like homes which are the intended audience literally have wired and wireless on the same network. This literally is just intended to connect your laptop or desktop to your phone.
You seem to be troubled by it not being able to work on made up scenarios which sound a lot like bad faith arguing.
ngoonee@reddit
Most homes and small offices have every device on the same network. Large offices with an IT security department won't even allow WiFi devices to talk to each other, making conveniences like KDE connect moot (I work for one such office).
It will still work if you hotspot your phone though, and it's not exactly KDE connect's fault if IT security is stringent.
Real-Abrocoma-2823@reddit
Happy for you but KDE connect never worked for me trough WiFi so I had to use Bluetooth and it had 10% chance of working and had to kill it to try again.
the_abortionat0r@reddit
Sounds like you have a messed up setup. Fix your computers.
Real-Abrocoma-2823@reddit
My computer is working fine even with 110% OCed ram. If app doesn't work in default configuration then it isn't user fault and I saw some YouTubers struggling with it too. If you can help then I will gladly accept that since KDE connect is great when it works.
AntLive9218@reddit
Not necessarily relevant here, but I consider non-ECC memory to be unreliable at this point, so pushing it even further just makes it really likely to become a relevant issue at some point in the future.
There's indeed something odd with KDE connect discovery, I have that issue too, so just told it to directly connect to a specific IP address. This was also a problem in the past with a known bug of multiple network interfaces not being handled properly, but unsure what's the issue this time.
And bluetooth is just not exactly great irrelevant to KDE connect. No matter which OS I used and which program needed bluetooth, it was never a good experience for a long time, even best case is just working for a couple days before some interruption.
Real-Abrocoma-2823@reddit
Bluetooth didn't work for me lately (probably windows somehow screwed with that even if I didn't boot it recently but it fixed itself after some reboots) and IP never worked (it said that IP is online or something but it didn't connect or show in list but maybe I am the problem here)
I just wanted to point that my computer is not broken and even OC is stable cause generic "fix your PC" is not helpful.
FluxUniversity@reddit
Has it been security audited? because that sounds like a horrendous security issue if you can access file from a locked phone 😬
AntLive9218@reddit
Bad news, all other apps do the same without letting you know.
The lock screen prevents human access to the UI, programs keep on running with access to whatever resources they were granted, and that's why they can still operate, like accepting calls.
If you want to check, restart your phone, and before unlocking it, try to get a call on your favorite bloatware like WhatsApp/Discord/Telegram. You likely won't have to test again after unlocking, because you already know that they will work, there's just no magic involved in anything unlocking on its own.
CrazyKilla15@reddit
Not just anything can connect, you have to pair them first. Communication is all properly encrypted and authenticated. You can view the fingerprints of both devices too.
QuickSilver010@reddit (OP)
its fine. i enabled it. you can appearantly do the same with samsug with "smart lock" feature as well. unlock it from your pc
Vortelf@reddit
This sounds more like security concern rather than a feature.
On the other hand, Android has the Smart Lock feature which you can use as a backup hardware unlock key for your phone. This device should never be your watch though.
AntLive9218@reddit
It's all complying with the Android permission system, so I'm curious which part of it is supposed to be the problem.
Google Smart Lock is not an Android feature, and ironically having Google's binary blobs running with the highest permissions is what's a known security concern.
CrazyKilla15@reddit
Why in the world would it be a security concern? Its authenticated and encrypted, not just anything can connect to your phone.
lukask04@reddit
If i forget something that is ingrained into my muscle memory, i usually just walk away and do something else, then when i come back and do it without thinking it is usually right.
CaptainObvious110@reddit
Absolutely
FryBoyter@reddit
A good example of why backups can be useful. Because alternative solutions such as KDE Connect are not always available.
Dangerous_Growth4025@reddit
Merci de perdre la mémoire, car sans cela tu n'aurais jamais mis ce post en ligne, et grace à toi j'ai découvert KDE Connect, !
merci !
