I worked for Western Express for 6 horrible months out of their Ontario yard and their trucks were governed at 65 and my trainer drove 65 pretty much everywhere we drove in Cali.I saw him pass troopers at 65 so many times I quit worrying about and eventually passed one myself. However much later on driving in truck that topped out at 80 I did get pulled over passing another truck well over 70 and when I feeblely tried explain myself to the trooper He just flat out said " look we give you guys 62" However I realized later that he did in fact do me a solid and just put "over 55" on the ticket and didn't put how fast I was REALLY going which could have been really bad.

It’s 100% enforced. I’ve known plenty of truckers over the years who got tickets for speeding. I wouldn’t risk it. You may not get dinged 8/10 times but why risk the other 2? It’s your license on the line. They aren’t forgiving either lol 😂 you better also be ready for a level 1 inspection cause man oh man are they gonna tear everything apart to find more to get you with. Shit they might try and get you on a DUI as well. The book will be thrown for sure.

I’ve been pulled over three times, two for speeding and one for lane violation (somehow they threw out all three before court, and yes I’ve learned my lesson), and all three times they’ve just given me the ticket and taken off. No inspection or harassment. For context I was being polite and honest, and it also doesn’t hurt that I’m a bland middle class white guy

The right lane thing went right out the door when they started doing all that construction on the I-5 heading through OC towards Oceanside/Vista. Too many non-commercial vehicles not knowing how to merge combined with very short runways due to temporary onramps must have caused too many incidences. All the trucks were in the third and fourth lanes. Saw a lot of people not even bother with the truck bypass because of it.

It's up to the officer. I drove for years in a team truck that ran reefer from Socal to New York. We were governed at 75 and I would run it that way all the way from the state line to Barstow. Farther west, you should do no more than 65. Inside cities, they're pretty strict about speed. Use your best judgement, but no, you don't need to do 55 on every inch of the state. You'll mostly get left alone. As a word of caution, my co driver got pulled by a kern county sheriff for doing 72 in a 55. His ticket was $930 and he had to appear in person. Just don't push your luck.

CAN they enforce it? Yes Do they most of the time? No. I've driven past 5 different CHP in Bakersfield doing 65 and not had any issues. Have heard plenty of people getting a 3rd lane violation doing 65 and the cop drops the speeding completely in favor of the lane violation. Now most cops, unless they need quota or just have a rod up their ass, will ignore u doing 65. 70 they start checking if u look American or not. Any higher than 70 ur asking for the ticket. Moral of California highways for trucks is don't be a dumbass, if ur passing cars consistently ur gonna get a ticket. If the cars are passing u, ur fine 90% of the time.

Fuck CA. I run 68 all day every day. Passed many CHPs and been passed by them. They know it’s a retarded law, they are not wanting to nail you, so don’t tailgate, don’t space out in the middle lanes, don’t have lights not working….. I’ve crested a hill by the rest stop south of Redding doing 72 and clocked by a CHP. He literally dropped his gun, looked at me, as I was passing I nodded, hit my brakes. It depends. Usually people form what I call California convoys where everyone is doing anywhere from 58 to 63 and they just line up and go. There's always the one doing 70, but it's usually just a few. Regardless, a few times I've seen CHP wiggle their fingers while riding next to the offender or flashing their lights a bit as warnings. In my experience of running to California for four years straight, most CHP don't care unless you're inside LA basin or inside north of Modesto.

For some reason, people always press the brake pedal right when they are next to the cop sitting on the side of the road. Never understood that cause he already got your speed a long time ago. Once they get too far ahead wait for another crowd of trucks we'll eventually come up. I rarely take the lead but if they are running 70-80 I'm keeping up and cutting time. Just try. Ot to take too long to pass if you gotta. Make it quick so they don't see you on the left too long. It'll make it obvious you are passing and probably going over since the "yes man" you are passing is probably doing exactly 55.

On the interstates or in high traffic areas they don't seem to care as long as you're not going over the car speed limit. I would be careful on back roads in rural areas with Sheriffs on patrol. 60 mph is pretty safe, i have been passed by hundreds of CHP officers and never got pulled over, because they are all going 80 breaking the law themselves.

Back in the days of double nickel, I took my 240Z up to visit my friend in San Carlos. These 2 cars came up on me on the Grapevine going about 100, so I fell in with them. We ran all the way up through Pacheco, and we separated around Gilroy. I ran out of gas looking for a gas station. I still made it to San Carlos in about 5 and 1/2 hours. Another time I was near Stockton, and this was after they started allowing 65 again. I missed the sign where the speed limit went back to 55, and the guy nailed me for 62! You just can never tell.

From my observations don’t be the fastest truck on the 99, I-8 they care for some reason idk why. Slow down into the high 50’s within 20 miles of the Oregon border. Everywhere else 65 if traffic lets me and in any of the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area always right two lanes. Also if you have students always tell them that the speed limit is 55 don’t pressure them into a speeding ticket.

I know a specific spot where cops LOVE to camp in CA that has tall lengthy rolling hills. Truckers think bombing it down hill doing 70+ down them is fine and their excuse is "Cops should understand" only for them to peel out of their hidey hole and pull them over. I have the same route everyday so I know where they hide specifically, and when I do the downhills, I only do 5 over. Can't count how many times I go between 55-60 downhill and some ass clown blows by me out of frustration doing 70+ only to get pulled over and it's fucking beautiful. So yes. CHP/DOT cares but in my experience, in spots where truckers like to be reckless a lot.

They still have insurance to answer to and a ticket will certainly increase their rates. A 15 over ticket in a commercial vehicle is considered a serious violation. Two serious violations in a three year time span will cost you your CDL. Owner operators still have a boss. Their boss is their business instead of a person.

When I was otr I ran 62 and never had an issue. Just stay out of the left lanes. They will get you for that EVERY TIME

Yeah it just depends on where you’re at. Any metro areas in SoCal you can do 65 and not worry. I delivered locally in the Bay Area/Sacramento for 3 years never had any issues. As other posters have said, it’s usually when you get out to the desert where it’s enforced. I-15 to Las Vegas, I-5 in central/Northern California I keep it at 62 for peace of mind.

I’m guessing it depends on where you are. I’ve cruised home behind trucks going 75 on 138 and 18. Trucks on I15 south are often going 65-67, but depends on traffic. 710 is another story too, but I don’t travel it often.

When I drove out there I was governed at 62. I never had any issues exceeding the limit at 62 mph. Now if you got a truck that run 80? Yeah that might be pushing it a bit. 😂

Yes, absolutely fucking yes they do. If you're flowing with traffic below 65 generally okay. Nothing stopping a highway patrol from singling you out and lighting you up.
