What’s something in Dallas that feels illegal?

For real though every time I walk out of a store holding a beer sealed, I feel like I’m doing a felony. Or eating Buc-ee’s brisket in traffic. What’s your this should be a crime but somehow isn’t moment?
Maker_Of_Tar@reddit
Why the hell do I have to pay two dollars to drop off or pick up my friends and family at the airport?
Seargant-Shitpost@reddit
Yo the hack for this is to {have them} take the shuttle to rental cars. Blue busses/runs frequent/free/lower level of Arrivals. It's what a lot of frequent flyers and crew do and myself. Rental car building being outside the toll zones.
Even better ; This applies to your Uber /Lyft +$20 airport surcharge also ..(coming and or going) just add 15 minutes for shuttle
Don't tell anyone
TransportationEng@reddit
There is a secret way to do this, but if it gets popular they will find a way to stop it.
sinovesting@reddit
I hate to be a spoilsport but are you referring to the rental counter trick, or something else?
TransportationEng@reddit
I like your thinking, but this is a different trick that doesn't involve a private company.

HornFanBBB@reddit
You can thank the traffic dodgers for this. It used to be free under a certain amount of time but people using the airport as a cut-through in the mid-cities.
jermabe@reddit
0 - 30 minutes was free
uwpxwpal@reddit
Yep, I remember driving through the airport to get to a rangers game when I was a kid.
El-MonkeyKing@reddit
So now it's $2 to cut through
HornFanBBB@reddit
I think it's $8 to cut through.
Mutant_Jedi@reddit
This is correct. If you spend less than 8 minutes before leaving again, you pay $9. If you spend 8-30 minutes (which you would for any drop off or pickup), it’s $2.
TheSpivack@reddit
I thought they always charged the people driving through (i.e. exiting a different plaza than you entered). But if you went out the same one you entered, it was free.
My recollection of it is that it was free for 30 minutes, but it was nearly impossible to enter the plaza, get to the terminal, do the dropoff, then get back out all within 30 minutes
xanju@reddit
Yeah if you can get in and out in 30 mins they should pay you lol

Buying a gun after filling out one sheet of paper, and being allowed to walk out with it in my waist with absolutely 0 training. Then you can walk over to the suppressor vending machine and fill out that paperwork as well.
I'm all for 2a, but being allowed to carry concealed with 0 training and never even having fired a shot is the dumbest thing.
pokeyporcupine@reddit
Easier to buy a gun in TX than it is to vote. Its sick.
Proper-Feedback1927@reddit
That's...simply not true.
Empress_Clementine@reddit
How so? Please, do elaborate? I’ve done both several times and voting was always far easier.

CharlieTeller@reddit
IT doesn't change anything.
"I'm all for the 1a, but I wish people were more educated before they were allowed to speak in front of kids at a school"
Doesn't change the 1a at all. I'm not saying "They shouldn't be able to purchase a gun or shouldn't be allowed to speak"
You can't be this dull surely.
"I'm all for the 7th amendment, but I wish judges would stop putting low bail on violent criminals"
Again, still passes.
rsuess14@reddit
And then deciding, eh I do t really like this one, and doing a private sale to another guy where you meetup at a Bass Pro parking lot and just like, give him the gun and he gives you the money and you just go on about your day.
scootypuffjr2@reddit
Damn. I got my CHL back in the mid 2000’s and I had to take courses with a certified instructor, pass a background check, etc. to get it. I personally think everyone who wants to buy a gun should have to do the same. I take the responsibility of having a loaded gun on my person very seriously.
CharlieTeller@reddit
As you should. You would get some hate here though as people think that violates the 2a.

Where is this suppressor vending machine? Last I checked, suppressors were still federally regulated, and required a tax stamp and a ridiculously long wait time?? Also, what store allows you to immediately conceal a gun (while in the store) that you just purchased?
randypaine@reddit
If you’re lucky, the tax stamp can clear in a week or less now.

Hurricane_Ivan@reddit
What changed that made it go from 6-9+ months to weeks (or less)?
PullFires@reddit
They automated the approval system.
It's why tax stamp approvals use to be signed by a person and now they're being churned out with digital signatures or generic names like "ATF approver"..
randypaine@reddit
Supposedly the ATF would process forms one at a time as they came in. If they needed to do more research on a background check (like if a person had aliases or had a really common name that would get flagged) then ALL forms would wait while they finished that work. Now those cases that need more work are getting put aside so they can just blow through all of the easy ones so most are done in days.
CharlieTeller@reddit
No one's literally going to shove it in their waistband as they walk out but the point is that you are legally allowed to carry it without training is what I'm getting at. You understand what I'm saying but are just being pedantic.
As for suppressors, you don't get it immediately, but there are these fancy kiosks you can walk to that make the paperwork take all of 5 seconds to do within the store. Looks like a giant vending machine.
TacosNGuns@reddit
A computer and printer doesn’t equal a suppressor venter machine. You left out the 6 months to a year of background checks and federal approval to get a tax stamp. You’re laying the BS on mighty thick
Vegetable-Welder-318@reddit
Got one of my stamps back under 24 hours. 6-12 months is a thing of the past. Stick to playing with knives
TacosNGuns@reddit
So you got one. Ive got 10. Under 24hrs is an exception, not the rule.
Vegetable-Welder-318@reddit
Get your numbers up rook. I’ve got 37 but this isn’t a contest. And my bad, a “kiosk” not a vending machine. Stop taking things so literal
Vegetable-Welder-318@reddit
10 stamps?!? Whoa now! Holler at me after you pass over 30. I’ve got 37 but this isn’t a pissing contest
CharlieTeller@reddit
What's the BS? That it feels weird to have a kiosk that helps speed up the process? That's all I'm saying. And there's nothing BS about it. You walk up to a kiosk and it helps you do the paperwork. It feels weird. That's all I'm saying. Nothing more.
Jrob78@reddit
What’s weird is having to do paperwork and get government approval to buy a suppressor. Suppressors are safety devices to protect your hearing but they don’t work like they do in the movies.
SatanMango@reddit
The lack of practical knowledge is hurting your argument.
The paperwork takes days to process, not months.
Looks like you are laying the BS on just as thick.

I thought when I did my 2 hour concealed carry course it was way too easy... then they did away with it.
CharlieTeller@reddit
Yep. Because honestly, I don't feel safer having people carrying around me especially when there is no training involved. Sure, you may stop someone robbing a store at gunpoint. But are you going to miss and hit me pumping my gas not having a clue whats going on across the street? Possibly.
Also training about the responsibility of your rounds. Say someone breaks down my door and comes in to rob me with a gun. I start shooting to defend my property, but say I'm in an apartment and directly out my door is my neighbors door with the cheapest sheet rock imaginable and my round misses, goes through the wall and hits his daughter watching tv. I'm responsible for that.
Training needs to teach people these things because you are responsible for every round that leaves the barrel. You can defend your property and still get charged with manslaughter for someone else at the same time. The lack of training creates a dangerous situation for everyone.
madster40@reddit
Plus responsible storage, deescalation, etc. When I got my LTC, even though the course was minimal, they at least covered SOME of that. Now it’s “here ya go, have fun”….
Lightofmine@reddit
They still cover it depending on where you go. Took a 4 hour course that covered it
madster40@reddit
Yeah, but since Tx doesn’t require a license anymore the people who really need to hear it likely won’t.
Mang9@reddit
The class remains a requirement for the actual “handgun license” which is still a thing. Obtaining one primarily is done to lower chance of a search or to utilize reciprocity while in other license-required states. Thus the license is optional and useful to some.
FollowingNo4648@reddit
When I moved back to Texas 20 years ago, it was an 8 hour course, then 4 hours, then 2 hours and then they said fuck it..FREEDUM!!
TacosNGuns@reddit
Suppressor vending machine? That’s a load of BS. And for the uninitiated like you, CHL/LTC classes aren’t much better. I can pass that shooting qualifier literally blind folded.
SatanMango@reddit
You are clearly incapable of basic research.
Silencer Shop has a kiosk, which is likely what they are talking about.
TacosNGuns@reddit
Do you put in money hit a button and a silencer drops out????? Yes or No?
CharlieTeller@reddit
Did I say that? Nope. Go read it again. It's a kiosk that helps you with the paperwork. You don't get one that drops out. I think you're inserting words there.
and yes the CHL classes are still BS. But you have to admit that it's better than literally nothing. I would prefer much more training than that.
So with your logic, since driver training isn't thorough, we shouldn't need drivers licenses or training at all, or since the CHL courses aren't thorough, we shouldn't need them at all. Or since OSHA courses around heavy machinery aren't thorough, we should just do away with them?
TacosNGuns@reddit
You said vending machine. You were wrong, thanks for admitting.
Having earned both licenses, a drivers license is exponentially more difficult to earn.
CharlieTeller@reddit
You havin a bad day homie? It looks like a vending machine. I can describe it however I want. If that triggers you, deal with it.
And no, a drivers license is definitely not in Texas. Having earned both myself as well, that's not how my experience went. You know what I did? 0 tests, 20 questions on a computer, license in hand.
azwethinkweizm@reddit
That's what I used to buy mine but it took the ATF 13 months to send me the stamp.
soundlightstheway@reddit
My friend was in and out of a Bass Pro Shop in 45 minutes to buy a gun and shot himself in the head that night. This was in Colorado post Columbine and Aurora, so they already had significantly better gun laws than Texas. It’s super fucked up. The vast majority of gun deaths are suicide (dwarfing crime, accidents, and mass shootings/terrorists) and the vast majority of successful suicides are shootings (dwarfing pills, hanging, carbon monoxide, jumping, etc.), but nobody ever talks about that shit. It’s a really sad affair how little we push back on the unhealthy gun culture and laws in America but especially Texas.

CharlieTeller@reddit
"I'm enjoy eating vegetables, but I don't like celery. " That doesn't mean I hate all vegetables and my statement is flawed. We're doomed as a society
CharlieTeller@reddit
No. It doesn't and the supreme court agrees. I hope you're not this adverse to critical thinking.
Even the wording of the 2nd amendment agrees with this. Your right to purchase and bear arms is not infringed upon if a license to carry concealed is required in public places.
The legal basis the supreme court used was a "shall issue" basis rather than needing to meet special needs in cases like Bruen, and Mcdonald V Chicago or DC v Heller. Heller explicitly acknowledged that the 2a right is not unlimited. That was direct wording from Justice Scalia who was a strict conservative.
With your logic, that means guns should be free because having to purchase one is a barrier to being able to own a gun. It's not. There's no restrictions from letting people own them. It's just to carry in public places while concealed, a license must be obtained.
So no, that's not. The way you're thinking is exactly why people are having issues with basic critical thinking these days. You're skipping multiple steps and everything is just black and white when it comes to language, law, and critical thinking. In your mind, because a basketball is orange, it must mean it's also an orange so why not eat it?
“Nothing in our opinion should be taken to cast doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill,
or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings,
or laws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of arms.”
— Heller, at 626–627
See that last line there? Nothing limits the qualification or commercial sale of the firearm. I know these are a lot of words. I'll gladly explain more, but I doubt you care and just want to talk into the void.
Elveintisiete@reddit
That’s a lie you can’t carry concealed without any training. You’re thinking of open carry..
CharlieTeller@reddit
No sir. This is not true anymore in Texas. In September of 2021, they did away with LTCs for concealed carry. I could send you the bill if you like.
You would be correct pre September of 2021 but no longer the case. You no longer need the LTC or CHL course.
Elveintisiete@reddit
That’s terrible
CharlieTeller@reddit
Not great I agree. I know the chl doesn’t do much to stop someone from buying a gun and shoving it in their pants. But it did at least provide some people who want to follow the law with training.
Instead of criminals, I’m more worried about a trigger happy person who is untrained hitting me.
Naysayers will say that it’s a rare occurrence but hindsight is always 20/20 once it happens to you or someone you love
Various_Ad5385@reddit
Lmao in Florida you don’t even need paperwork.
DesperateDelay3439@reddit
Just bought a suppressor on Sunday, how come I wasn’t able to just walk out with it right then and their? Why did I have to submit finger print paper work and do an extensive back ground check, why am I waiting for the ATF to approve my can before I can walk out with it ? Oh not to mention why do I still have to file a 4473 if I do get approved? Must be some special gun shop you go too I’ve never heard about.
MrTavvoo@reddit
Meh. I don’t trust most people with firearms, but that’s not up to me to decide. The second amendment has guaranteed them their right to bear arms, even though they might end up on r/idiotswithguns. I would be totally cool with requiring training for a license but it has to be affordable and actually share practical details (but leaving that up to the government is a recipe for disaster). When it comes to suppressors, silencer shop has developed a great method to allow common people to acquire suppressors, they shouldn’t be a tool that is only reachable by the rich and wealthy.
syngyne@reddit
Can you carry concealed without a CHL? I thought it was only open carry that didn't need a license.
CharlieTeller@reddit
Yes. In 2021 they changed the law to require no LTC to carry open or concealed.
boldjoy0050@reddit
Do you have any evidence that not requiring training for concealed carry means higher crime? Because states like Vermont and Utah have been permitless carry for many years and nothing happened.
CharlieTeller@reddit
I never claimed it means higher crime., but also Vermont and Utah, well, nevermind that's a whole other socio-economic argument.
I'm not making this claim here, but I do have evidence that states that do have less restrictions on firearms leads to more firearms ending up across borders and in gang crime.
For instance, in Chicago, I'll have to find the data, but it's something like 60% of the firearms recovered in gang shootings come from neighboring Indiana due to their lax gun laws. And the same goes for when Washington DC had the handgun ban because Virginia had relatively lax laws as well which meant that most of the guns used were purchased out of state and brought over.
It's an entirely different argument and I'm not saying it means higher crime, nor did I really want to talk about that here, but there is evidence of what I said above at least and it's not really shocking. If you live in a major metropolitan area, and a neighboring state less than 40 minutes away with traffic has lax gun laws, it's no surprise they end up in crossing borders with the guns.
boldjoy0050@reddit
So then what’s the issue with concealed carry without a permit? I’m fine with people not having to pay and get permission from the government for exercising their rights.
Also, historically gun permits were a way of preventing the “wrong people” from buying guns. In the south, you can guess who was on the “wrong people” list.
CharlieTeller@reddit
So. In my mind, the issue with permitless carry isn't about "who" should own a gun, but how we ensure basic safety and accountability. No one is restricting your right to buy the gun, which is what the 2nd amendment dictates. There have been multiple court rulings that back this.
The 2nd amendment protects the right to keep and bear arms, however as decided by the SC, the government can still regulate how that right is exercised in the interest of public safety. Having a permit to carry it concealed.
You can still buy a firearm, and wear it openly on your hip in a holster. That falls under open carry and while I still don't feel comfortable being around some dude openly carrying that I don't know, I at least know that I now can make a decision to be aware of that individual and avoid them in the event that something goes down in public.
When it comes to concealed carry, that's different. I no longer know you are carrying a weapon, and suddenly everyone is now a threat.
It gets really complicated when it comes to firearm training and education, and I believe everyone should be more educated with them, but allowing people to concealed carry without training or permits really only benefits criminals in my mind.
This gets really complicated fast, but you don't have to pay the government to exercise your right in this issue. You could just open carry.
ObWzEN@reddit
Yeah, there should be easily accessible government-funded firearms training for all. We should be educated about all of our rights, and know how to safely and practically apply our rights

BitGladius@reddit
I moved to Wisconsin for a few years, specs would be fine. It's the (bad) mom and pops that would suffer. Standard grocery stores had limited selection and I question some of the choices, the Woodman's liquor section was practically a chain liquor store and not really the same thing, people were genuinely excited when Total Wine showed up and would go to specialty liquor stores when they wanted something specific.
happy_puppy25@reddit
Grocery stores hate those laws. But unfortunately, the grocery stores have spent less money on lobbying than liquor store stores.

azwethinkweizm@reddit
That is far and away the biggest myth in Texas politics. The number one opponent to Sunday and holiday sales are the liquor store owners and their lobby (TPSA). They don't want to expand sales because it's a state enforced day off, it levels the playing field among competitors, and it lowers their costs. Businesses will always put their interests first and they have a lot of cash to throw around to politicians.

The law is dumb but if you have lived here for longer than 2 weeks it should be common knowledge and is easily planned for.
nerdboy_sam@reddit
Well yes. But the law is really stupid and there's no justifiable reason for it except religious views. Which seems illegal to force others to participate and act on your personal beliefs.

Not quite, Texas Blue Laws were put in place to get people to attend church. The original Texas Blue Laws were introduced in 1863 and prohibited people from engaging in horse racing, selling alcohol, gambling and bowling. In 1961 Texas doubled down and passed their last Blue Law that banned the sale of 42 items on Sundays, from shoes to watches to lawn mowers. They abolished most of the Blue Laws in 1985. Source

That's what the liquor cartels figured out a long time ago. No reason to be open on Sundays because people will plan ahead - thus the liquor stores save the expense of having to be open on Sundays.
boldjoy0050@reddit
It’s annoying because I do a lot of my shopping on Sunday and would love to stop in and buy something. But nope, it’s closed.
Restil@reddit
It's a law almost nobody cares about, except for the few people that can't plan ahead more than 5 minutes, and it's unlikely any of those people are going to put in any amount of effort to get the law changed. There's no limit on the amount of alcohol you can purchase and most of it is nonperishable (even if unsealed) and has an almost infinite shelf life. You can absolutely stock up on your alcohol needs on one of the many days per week that the stores are operating to cover yourself during the extended multi-hour period during which they are not.
So yeah, if you know you're likely to need to go on a bender on Sunday, prepare for it on Saturday.
CharlieTeller@reddit
That was one shocking thing when I left Texas. Walking into a Kroger and seeing liquor every day was just wild.
sran469@reddit
It's after 10 a.m on Sunday now. This is the progress we have achieved in Texas in last many decades I've lived here. Being able to buy beer at 10 instead of 12 on a Sunday!!!!!
nerdboy_sam@reddit
I remember years ago working at Albertsons on a Sunday at the checkout register and literally watching the clock change to 12:00p as to not sell it before and risk getting fired.

Every time I have to go visit someone in the hospital, I get pissed off that I have to pay to park at Medical City. It's ridiculous and should be illegal. Given that my FIL has chronic health conditions and my MIL has cancer and all of their doctors are at Medical City, I have paid SO MUCH MONEY for the priviledge of parking at the hospital to bring them whatever they left at home or to drop them off (and take them to their room) or pick them up (and help them walk out).
jermabe@reddit
Have you asked whatever Department you are dealing with to validate your parking. Most receptionists of these different departments can validate your parking

In some places around here restaurants can have indoor smoking areas RIP J'S in Addison where a third of the dining room was smoking. Dunston's has a cigar lounge but I think it's technically an enclosed patio, not the same as the regular dining room

Bulk trash pickup. I’ve thrown away egregious amounts of large unwanted furniture, appliances, tree branches. I always think “this is too big, too heavy, too ridiculous”, but the giant claw comes and hauls it all away. Almost makes property tax feel worth it.

Weaving in and out of traffic in my Altima. Idk, feels like it should be illegal, but definitely isn't here apparently

Quasi. If hemp, yes legal.
Visible_Income1825@reddit
No not at all quasi or hempyou can have 4 oz of weed on you
TacosNGuns@reddit
"Quasi" is a Latin word meaning "as if" and is used as a prefix to indicate that something is almost, but not completely, the thing it describes.
Which is the exact case in Dallas.
Visible_Income1825@reddit
But we're not talking quasi we're not talking hemp, we're talking literally THC marijuana not thca no like as if ands or buts Mr Reddit dictionary man
Visible_Income1825@reddit
I think dude thought I was talking about smoking the near THC products downtown
Visible_Income1825@reddit
It's like what they do in Austin and San Marcos I believe it's been decriminalized to some degree. people smoke in the open downtown.
sCubed5@reddit
unfortunately, like the comment said below, the decriminalization been revered in austin, san marcos, and now dallas as of this summer. we’ll see what happens as the AG office tries to screw us all again

That’s exactly what I meant. It SHOULD be a crime. But the way nobody is getting stopped, seems like it isn’t 😂

When you don’t have a state income tax, the state will raise your cost of living. Sales taxes are higher here too.
Realistic_Ad_8023@reddit
Texas isn’t nearly the highest in sales tax but property taxes are insane.
tooheavybroo@reddit
Among the highest property taxes as well.
The state WILL get their share of taxes. The question is how they will go about getting it. Either you pay a state income tax, or they will tax everything else from sales tax, property tax, toll tax, registration tax, car registration fee.
The internet is your friend, compare the fees. Look at the data.

That's funny because to me I find it weird that they don't have liquor, seeing as where I grew up you could easily grab last minute shooters or handles from the gas station on the way to the lake.

My neighbor goes for walks with a GoPro chest mount and his ar15 over his shoulder.
Again he is going for a walk, sometimes with his dog.
I see him regularly and he is an old army veteran (I am marine veteran) and he told me he is looking for a new reason to get target practice. The camera is so he doesn’t go to jail.
Homes in the neighborhood go between 1-2 million.
