The 717… one of my favorite commercial jets ever. On the ramp at KHSV

Love them , I go out of my way to choose them at Delta . So far, I’ve flown Delta, Hawaiian, and AirTran.

Delta is my favorite airline, partly for the sole reason of flying on a 717. I fly Delta any chance I get but they do have some pricy tickets most of the time. Not even close to United’s expensive fares though.

How could I go about finding a 717 flight?
icecream_dragon@reddit (OP)
Delta Airlines is probably your only bet there, or Qantas if you live in Australia.

We’ve been a Delta family. My uncle worked for Delta and earlier at Northeast Airlines. So we flew a lot of lucky tri-stars, DC-8s, 757 - the whole lot. I still really like the 717s, not as nice as the tri-stars.

Delta and Midwest Express for me.
CV880@reddit
I would have loved to have gotten one of those Midwest. I would love to smell the fresh cookies on board.
Bdowns_770@reddit
The cookies…
bschmidt25@reddit
And the seats. We don’t realize how good we had it.
Bdowns_770@reddit
The best care in the air. However, food from Maders was not that great.

Midwest Express was the best (care in the air). My first flight ever was on one of their DC-9’s back in the early 90’s, MKE to MCO. Pilots asked aviation trivia questions and I wound up scoring two dozen fresh chocolate chip cookies. The trip home was also fun for me as a young avgeek—we had to divert due to weather so I got to experience a bonus takeoff and landing. 🍪 💙

The first airline I ever flew on was a Midwest express to fort Lauderdale. Grandpa upgraded us on the way back so there were two kids under 12 in first class lol.
SillyCubensis@reddit
As a pilot, the DC-9 was better.
AdDangerous729@reddit
Did you fly the DC-9? How about the 717?
SillyCubensis@reddit
Yes, both.
AdDangerous729@reddit
What allows the reversers to deploy on the 717?
SillyCubensis@reddit
Because the buckets are so big the 717 has an interlock where the nose gear has to compressed to allow them to deploy. The DC-9 didn't have that, so you could pop them whenever you wanted. Even airborne. SUPER cool feature.
icecream_dragon@reddit (OP)
Totally fine, but I just absolutely love the sound the BR715s
CT-1065@reddit
I'm a big fan of the 717 (and really all the other DC-9 + derived variants)
icecream_dragon@reddit (OP)
Fly Delta! They operate lots of their connecting flights on 717s. Not sure about hub-to-hub flights, but you can find plenty of connections on 717s. In my case, HSV-ATL and vice versa are actually mostly a 717 and occasionally on a 737. The flight is very short, less than an hour with no snack service.
CT-1065@reddit
I'll admit i've done research in the past and it'd be a trip to Florida, or somewhere else in that general south east chunk, where I can get one with Delta (just ""accidentally"" connect in Atlanta going to, for example, Melbourne FL). Flight length isn't a problem since I'm used to sub 1 hour service-less E175 flights.
CaydeTheCat@reddit
I made most of my first million miles on AA in the Mad Dog and -90s they had. Glad to see the line lived on for a while as the 717.
mcwobby@reddit
I've flown many 717s in my life as they were the workhorse of a route I flew daily in regional Australia. Mostly on Qantaslink; though I've also flown them on Bangkok Airways and Hawaiian at least. It's a pity to see them go as they've mostly been replaced on the routes I used them on by Q400s and Embraer 190s.
I flew a Comac C909 recently from Shijiazhuang to Hohhot, and it felt very much like coming home haha. Which is odd, because I absolutely loather the Fokker 70s/100s that are used around Australia!
Difficult_Camel_1119@reddit
You're lucky that you still got them. There aren't any left in Europe
icecream_dragon@reddit (OP)
Not for much longer, I think these are being phased out by the A220
DullMind2023@reddit
I’ll see your 717 and raise you an MD-95.
spddmn77@reddit
Idk how to describe it, but these always feel super cozy to fly on. Love sitting by a window on the 2 seat side
randomtask733@reddit
I love sitting in the seat and knowing that there are moving control cables beneath my feet.
FixergirlAK@reddit
I flew on my first one ever, HNL-OGG a couple of weeks ago.
