I miss the sound of the old engines.
CaptHindsite@reddit
Traded in the sound for 10k more thrust (per engine) and less hassles with Euro noise limitations. Twas a good trade, IMO.
Nebnotrab1965@reddit
when the C5A use to do pattern work every one knew when they were coming. First C5M to fly over scared the hell out of my granddaughter
whimpers2@reddit
That sound is a core childhood airshow memory
El_Mnopo@reddit
Oh man, yes! Grew up near a SAC base and they always had one at the yearly air show. Loved walking through it and hearing the nose when it performed!
atclew@reddit
I used to get C5-Bs in the pattern at the last atc tower I worked at. The sound of the old engines spooling up as they did low approaches and touch-and-goes was unlike anything else. It was vibrate the tower cab windows for a split second as the engines must've hit the harmonic frequency for that brief moment in time. If we weren't on position, we would step out onto the catwalk to bask in that glorious noise.
El_Mnopo@reddit
Oooh yeah! It was a sound like no other.
Internal-Fruit-1482@reddit
Miss the flight line as a whole.

Ya, your correct of course. I'm old, I flew out of Nam on a C-5A..and now they are all Ms.or rotting in the dessert.
SaltyMxSlave@reddit
Most of the As are in the desert. Most of the Ms were Bs at some point, with a couple of As in the mix.

Nah, the ones in Tucson are far from “rotting” in the desert.

Navy guy here flew in one from Dover, Delaware to Germany, on a hop back to my ship. There is a 70+ person airliner compartment along the top and the bottom, a cargo hold big enough to hold two H-53 helicopters.
SadSoil9907@reddit
Beautiful C-5.
On another note, any idea what they’ll replace them with when they finally retire the aircraft? Is there a plan for a new heavy lifter since the C-17 is out of production.

The first time I saw a C-5 take off was at Ft Sill. I was pretty sure something that big could not fly, so Oklahoma had to be sinking.
Both-Leading3407@reddit
First time I saw it go airborne I thought to myself, "that's going too slow to get any lift??? " It's magical to watch one take off.

If you type "Big grey Military plane" to google, this is first result: https://www.google.com/search?q=big+grey+military+plane&oq=big+grey+military+plane&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUqBwgAEAAYgAQyBwgAEAAYgAQyCAgBEAAYFhgeMggIAhAAGBYYHjIICAMQABgWGB4yDQgEEAAYhgMYgAQYigUyCggFEAAYgAQYogQyCggGEAAYgAQYogQyCggHEAAYgAQYogTSAQgzMDk1ajBqN6gCALACAA&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
Come on. Picture is not fuzzy, there's no mystery. Do people have this low of an amount of intellectual curiosity? My curiosity would not allow me to even wait to have other people answer me, I'd find it on my own.
I get it when it is a silhouette, or a tough picture, but I literally see pictures of a helicopter that says "Royal Air Force" and when I type "helicopter royal air force" into google it is the first result.
I can't be the only one who is bothered by this outsourcing of googling where people refuse to spend literal two seconds of their own time to find out something.
Relative-Egg8939@reddit
C5 Galaxy by the look of it, nothing else it can be as C141 Starlifter is way smaller .

I live 40 miles due south of Lackland AFB. I worked as an ARFF for Boeing for 12 years utilizing a shared runway with Lackland. This is 100% the new Cessna 172-800.
JaviSATX@reddit
Been here my whole life, and I’ve never grown tired of seeing the C5’s float around the city skyline.
saltshaker80@reddit
Is it an RG model??? Oh man that would be so exciting to see a new 172-800-RG.
PrismDoug@reddit
I don’t know why, but the rename to Joint Base San Antonio just doesn’t sound as nice as Lackland.
ClifftonSmith@reddit
I know why....it sucks! It should be Lackland AFB and Kelly AFB
JaviSATX@reddit
That is a C-5M Galaxy. Biggest plane in the US military, and possibly in the world now that the late great 225 is no longer with us.

Boating_Enthusiast@reddit
It looks like a C-5 Galaxy, but there's subtle clues to refute that. For instance, although it has the iconic T tail, four engines on high wing, and 28 wheels in the gear down position. If you look carefully, you'll notice that this aircraft is in the air, and not in a maintenance hanger while the crew enjoy a weekend pass in Kaiserslauten.
