No comment about Ricky burns who has probably accomplished the most in the 2000s becoming a 3 weight world champion lol
Designer-Painting790@reddit
Not saying he’s the best or beat the best but he at least deserves a mention for his accomplishments
TalkingDonkey07@reddit
Cooper. Beat Clay hands down
cr1regan@reddit
Audley Harrison, he should be on this list. He is the GOAT
Rare_Pirate4113@reddit
Calzaghe. I think Lewis’ peak was the best, but he lost fights. Calzaghe was consistently great across his whole career. I think if Calzaghe was from North America, he would be considered one of the greatest of all time and it’s criminal he isn’t spoken about much
ZakalweTheChairmaker@reddit
I’ll forward the case for Lennox Lewis - not a hard one to make.
He was the undisputed HW champion (the last before Usyk more than 20 years later) during what is widely regarded as the second strongest era for heavyweight boxing in history (the strongest being the late 60’s/early 70’s). He has two top 10 HW’s on his resume in Holyfield and Tyson (admittedly he was washed). His win against Vitali Klitschko aged well given what he subsequently achieved and he had wins over multiple fighters who would be close to the top of the tree (bar Usyk) in 2025 like Mercer, Ruddock, Tua, Briggs and Goliath.
There‘s a consensus that Lewis is an all-time top 5 heavyweight and a lot of boxing fans have him in their top three. Personally I think H2H he’s number one i.e. I think in a best of three format, he beats every other heavyweight in history.
”Greatest” doesn’t mean “best” and HW is the glamour division, which IMO gives Lewis the edge over the other standout candidate, Calzhaghe.
Proud-Focus2913@reddit
People tend to forget that Lewis is a year older than Tyson..
Queasy_Jackfruit_474@reddit
Tyson was still on a downward trajectory before then whereas Lewis wasn’t regardless of age.
Proud-Focus2913@reddit
Nevertheless, there are those who would have you believe that it was a young and up and coming Lewis who beat an old man Tyson...
Live-Inevitable-2232@reddit
Tyson turned pro nearly 6 years younger than Lewis did, had a stint in prison and had blown through likely millions in drink and drugs.
Physical age isn't necessarily indicative of how worn down a person is. Tyson had way more miles on the clock than Lewis by that point in their lives.
Proud-Focus2913@reddit
Yes ! Tyson made life decisions and choices that no doubt curtailed his career, that doesn't detract from the fact that Lewis beat him when he did because he'd managed his life better and more responsibly. He was still a year older is all im saying. The things that affected Tyson were things he chose to do - they didn't 'happen' to him...
No_Atmosphere8146@reddit
He wasn't in world title fights at 20 years old though.
Proud-Focus2913@reddit
So what ??
No_Atmosphere8146@reddit
So Tyson peaked earlier, hence being "washed" when meeting Lennox
Proud-Focus2913@reddit
Well it's certainly an opinion...
silentv0ices@reddit
It's a pretty good one tyson had 10 more pro fights at the time.
Fragrant-Prize-966@reddit
Gotta be Lewis. An absolute fucking monster in his prime.
SilentShadow857@reddit
He got beat by part time rahman 😂 the best don't get beat.
MrMondypops@reddit
So Muhammad Ali can’t be considered great in your eyes?
SilentShadow857@reddit
Beaten by guys who were also very good boxers, a few I'd consider great boxers. There's a big big difference.
WatchOne2032@reddit
He's not british
fireeyedboi@reddit
How is he not British? He was born in England and moved to Canada when he was 12, and is a British citizen.
WatchOne2032@reddit
He didn't look very British while representing Canada in the Olympics
You makes your choice....
The-Rambling-One@reddit
If the man who was born in Britain, and has came out and said explicitly that he considers himself British first, and identifies as British, how does that make him not British?
He fought for Canada in the Olympics because he was given the opportunity too, every athlete in the world would have took that same opportunity in that position.
Doesn’t make him any less British.
Icy_Consideration409@reddit
You don’t understand the concept of dual nationality?
It’s possible to be the citizen of more than one country. Lewis was born in Britain and raised in Britain until he was 12.
fireeyedboi@reddit
How would the young Lewis have gotten involved in the British Olympic boxing team given they he was moved by his mother to Canada when he wax 12?
Regardless, he was born here, he is a citizen of here, his mother was British before she even moved here from Jamaica due to the empire. I’ll ask again, how exactly is he not British?
Impressive_Profit215@reddit
Also avenged his only two losses in dominant fashion.
thehugeative@reddit
Yeah for some reason that means so much to me, even more than an undefeated record. GSP vs. Khabib for instance. (Not a Khabib hater just dont hold him in the same regard because of era/style/fight selection)
mrmidas2k@reddit
Agreed. Not sure how he'd do against a Prime Tyson, but he'd have a fair shot if he took training seriously.
Regardless, a supremely good boxer in his prime.
shbangbinbash@reddit
Great analysis but humbly disagree
Fragrant-Prize-966@reddit
Then who?
Strong_Muffin3941@reddit
My thoughts are similar, but less articulate. Nice summary!
SaluteMaestro@reddit
Lewis or Calzaghe, going to go with Calzaghe as his record is better than Lewis's.
Competitive_Pen7192@reddit
Lewis for me... Calzaghe beat a washed up Roy Jones which meant nothing although he legit did well vs Hopkins as the old man continued after to win stuff.
Then again Lewis you could argue fought a washed up Tyson and Holyfield. Stole a win vs big brother Klitschko and promptly fled into retirement, I don't blame him!!!
jayjones35@reddit
The way Joe Calzaghe stopped the hype of Jeff left hook Lacey was special, one of the best nights in British boxing that it’s up their with Kostya Tszyu vs Ricky Hatton
Scala_89@reddit
How did he steal the win against Vlad? His punches literally tore his face up so bad the ringside doctor feared he could lose an eye if he carried on. In some ways it could be argued that fight turned out to be one of Lewis's great wins. Hungry fighter on the way up, his parallel in size and a future hof world champ. Vladimir was up on the cards but that means nothing if the fight has to be stopped.
Specialist_Diver_200@reddit
He didn’t fight Wladimir, he fought Vitali
Scala_89@reddit
He did, don't know what I was thinking. Imo he fought the better brother.
Bruno241221@reddit
The washed up Tyson narrative doesn’t work. They were relatively the same age.
Tyson had a spell in prison, Tyson wasted his talents but that isn’t Lennox’s fault.
Besides, Tyson is probably the most overrated boxer in HW history.
KingVonOBlock600@reddit
Anybodys record can be scrutinized in regards to who they thought and when they fought them...I agree in regards Tyson who was at that point but I think the two performances against Holyfield weren't against a washed up fighter at all and I believe he won them well. Lewis for me the best.
Wubbleyou_@reddit
He wouldn’t fight a young Froch though would he? Even though Carl called him out a few times.
fireeyedboi@reddit
Is it?
Old-Law-7395@reddit
Calzaghe had 46 wins and 0 losses, against 41 wins and 2 losses for Lewis.
Wouldn't consider Calzaghe british tho, hes Welsh.
Free_Clerk223@reddit
Welsh? As in the original Britons?
No_Atmosphere8146@reddit
Would you consider Chief Sitting Bull an American?
ValerianKeyblade@reddit
Yes? A Native American, to distinguish quite a large ethnic divide there. The Welsh, English, and Scottish - while diverse in their own right, I don't dispute - do not have the same gulf between them as Native Americans and early-generation US descendants of European settlers.
The Welsh are British, as are the English and Scottish. That is not the same as 'the Welsh are English are Scottish'. Edinburgh and Glasgow are both in Scotland. You can be a Glaswegian and Scottish (and, pointedly, British). Identities have layers to them.
Old-Law-7395@reddit
Most Welsh people i have known/meet would consider themselves Welsh and not British.
living2late@reddit
I get where you're coming from. I'm Welsh and would never describe myself as British. It's more of an English thing to do that.
But I am British and so is Calzaghe.
KingVonOBlock600@reddit
We English do say English first it's just we aren't as sensitive as the other home nations or tribal. To me it's ridiculous we all have to put British on our passports and stuff. I don't consider myself British at all and I respect Scottish people and the Welsh thinking the same.
blubbery-blumpkin@reddit
English here and in my experience we say English first. British second. But we are British, and not upset about that in anyway. I think it’s just most people I talk to im already in Britain so it doesn’t narrow it down at all.
TamaktiJunVision@reddit
My mum's family is Welsh and none of them have ever said they don't consider themselves British.
Hashtagbarkeep@reddit
Am Welsh, also am British, nice to meet you
dazwales1@reddit
It's more welsh first and British second.. still British though
Conscious-Country-64@reddit
You've asked them have you?
SaluteMaestro@reddit
Just because some people don't live in the real world isn't really anything to do with the argument.. I class myself as English over British and would never say I'm specifically British doesn't mean I'm not though.
fireeyedboi@reddit
Are you Welsh?
Free_Clerk223@reddit
Im scottish, I can share the point of view, that doesnt change the fact that they're British though
hudson2_3@reddit
They are Welsh and British.
slade364@reddit
By this logic, nobody is British.
Square-Variation9132@reddit
That's literally the opposite of what the consensus is
Calzaghes record is relatively weak compared to that of Lewis

Benn (Before the McClennan fight).
McGuigan.
I still think Hamed was a great talent that went unrealised because he stopped working hard when he believed his own PR
I’m really optimistic about Ituama. I think he’s a exciting prospect

Yes, The all-conquering Barry McGuigan!
pcor@reddit
Bait used to be believable
RochesterThe2nd@reddit
What’s your objection?
World featherweight champion, with three successful defences, British and European champion, and all in a crowded field.
I accept that many will disagree with my suggestion, but to suggest it so outlandish as to be “bait“ prompts me to be curious about your reasoning.
pcor@reddit
He’s Irish.
muller747@reddit
Facts eh? Who needs em?
RochesterThe2nd@reddit
Northern Ireland is part of the UK.
Conscious-Country-64@reddit
To be fair, McGuigan is from County Monaghan which is a part of Ulster we got rid of when we had the chance in 1921.
MJ_Newbie_UK@reddit
Only because if the whole of Ulster - including Donegal and Monaghan - had stayed in Northern Ireland then the population split between Protestants and Catholics was too narrow for the Ulster unionists. Don't worry it's being rectified now you ill-informed dumbass.
Conscious-Country-64@reddit
Nah we're not taking that shithole back. Twat.
pcor@reddit
Being from NI does not make someone British, but he’s not even from there…
mrmidas2k@reddit
In fairness, if you knew Hamed, his downfall was inevitable. Massively talented, but an insane ego, and a lot of the time, VERY reluctant to back up his own words.

Henry Cooper floored Clay and only lost due to some cheating by Clay's corner. Jim Watt was a great champions and so was Barry McGuigan
WB1173@reddit
So Coopers career highlight was decking Clay who then went on to beat him???.,,😁 The Clay fight earned him a bit of fame, but his career was very ordinary compared to the other options on the list. Not even close to being part of the conversation.

tartanthing@reddit
I'm going to throw in an honourable mention for Nicky Piper. His losses were TKO's. Never KO'd. The guy could take a punch, repeatedly. I remember watching him fight once fairly early on in his career going toe to toe with his opponent, both of them dead on their feet, but he wouldn't back down. He was covered in blood by the final round. They would have stopped the same thing these days. If he hadn't come up in an era with so many outstanding boxers, he would be much better remembered.
Shoddy_Obligation142@reddit
Paul Sykes
macey63@reddit
Joe Calzaghe was unbeaten he gets my vote
Ok_Elevator5243@reddit
I met Frank Bruno as a young kid (about 10 or something), he used to train at Peacock Gym in East London and me and my sister used to go there to play in the kids matted area they had. He was coming out of his car to go into the gym and we recognised him and asked for his autograph. He was super nice to us, chatted a minute with us and some other kids and had some photos he gave us and signed them for us all. Then we went running home to tell our mum and dad! For that, he'll always have a fond place in my heart :)
Alarmed-Cheetah-1221@reddit

Ken Buchanan.
jimbodinho@reddit
The sad thing about Calzaghe’s career is that he wasn’t tested against the very best during his peak. His team were very cautious. No doubt he was great, but how great remains unproven.
Lewis on the other hand dominated the heavyweight division for a decade. As much as I love Calzaghe, Lewis clearly has the more impressive record.
debrisaway@reddit (OP)

randolph turpin. A very different age though.

As a Welshman, I can only say Calzaghe
vaskopopa@reddit
His mum worked in the canteen at my work when he was starting out. She had a poster of a fight promo as he just turned pro. That was the first time I had head of him.
Focusmate1@reddit
On paper id say Calzaghe although i never found him that exciting. Growing up, the Benn Eubank era was great to watch as well as the craziness of Prince Naseem.
vaskopopa@reddit
Oh, I forgot about the Prince. He was just incredible.
vaskopopa@reddit
Surely Calzaghe needs to top that list and not be on the bottom.
You can put Bruno anywhere near the top and not mention Hutton and McGuigan. I would imagine that Joshua or Fury would be better than Bruno, but we can't compare across the generations like that.
Also, although I liked Eubank and his style, Ben had survived and won that crazy fight against McLellan which was just heroic. (I can't say it was a great fight because it was cruel).
Avocardiff@reddit
Calzaghe because of his record but Lennox Lewis was a badass.
lonascot@reddit
For me, it’s got to be Joe Calzaghe — undefeated in 46 fights, unified the super-middleweight division, and beat legends like Hopkins and Jones Jr. His consistency, skill, and longevity put him at the top of British boxing history.

He wasn't as great as Lewis or Calzaghe but David Haye deserves some more respect. He was on the Fury sort of level i'd say and his fight against Valuev was the most Rocky esque, cold war cliche fight we're ever likely to see in real life.

When I was working at a baby wipe packing factory in North Wales in the 90s it was definitely Dan the Psycho from Flint. One of the best underrated boxers in the UK who had a very short career only 15 legal fights before he lost his license due to having lost sight in one eye from being bottled in a fight was Cliff Field, he was at one point Joe Bugner’s chief sparring partner, he also did an exhibition bout with Ali and knocked him down, he also beat Britain’s reputedly hardest man Lenny McLean twice in bare knuckle fights
