Anyone remember 'The World Of David The Gnome' (1985-1988)?

HATED this show
Drygir@reddit
Thanks I remembered this show from my childhood and loved catching episodes here and there, but never saw the title before and now I know it.
Cubelock@reddit (OP)
And don't forget the heartbreaking final episode where they die (LINK).
Plane_Highlight_8671@reddit
I’ve never forgotten this. I’m glad I’m not the only one.
victor4700@reddit
I didn’t remember this specific episode from back in the day and just watched it like a month ago. Damn dust started circulating in my house right at the same time.
PussyFriedNachos@reddit
I remember feeling doom. Was the finality due to some major world event or something? I can't bring myself to watch it 😂
DmtTraveler@reddit
From chatgpt:
So, not death in a grim way, but definitely a “bring tissues” finale.
elonmusktheturd22@reddit
Only grieving till he sees a lady fox and runs off to get laid iirc
projectx51@reddit
lol wtf? It's like that one movie...Radio Flyer where the kid escaped by flying off the cli..f....f......oh. Well, shit.
JonnyQuest1981@reddit
Bobby didn’t die. Both writer and director say he lived. The brother narrator(Tom Hanks!) states in the movie that he received post cards from him later.
JellybeanFernandez@reddit
Bobby definitely died, either by suicide or from his stepfather. The flyer was just a metaphor for him finally being able to escape his abuse and trauma, and it was a way for his brother to process his anger and frustration at not being able to protect him. I know the writer and director say differently, but cmon, it stretches even the extremely flexible plausibility of 80s/90s movies by suggesting that an abused 12 year old built an airplane and flew away and lived a full life without ever seeing his brother again.
Kimberlylynn2003@reddit
Oh man, reading this gave me cold chills! Your explanation fits perfectly…
agentmkultra666@reddit
I feel like SO much stuff from our childhood era was actually so dark and we just never realized it at the time.
JellybeanFernandez@reddit
Absolutely! Atreyu and Artax is the classic example, but there were so many. Do you remember the main witch transformation in The Witches? Pure nightmare material.
projectx51@reddit
You ever seen the vulture with bitch tits from The Last Unicorn?
trashboatfourtwenty@reddit
I see your Last Unicorn and raise you Unico and the Isle of Magic. At least the Last Unicorn presented as pretty serious most of the time, Unico was much more shocking to me as it felt like kids pop until the demons moved in. I still might watch it with my kid soon
projectx51@reddit
VoddieMC@reddit
No. Not going to click that link. I was blindsided the first time I watched that and that's enough. For me, it was on par with Artax...
nhaines@reddit
I love seeing young YouTube reactors watch The Neverending Story and struggling with whether or not they just slowly kill the horse 20 minutes in, lol. It's like, buckle up, you're in for a ride!
DabBoofer@reddit
.. Artax death was way wayyyy worse.
73-68-70-78-62-73-73@reddit
Please tell me it was predatory birds.
moonbunnychan@reddit
That ending DESTROYED me as a child. My mom STILL talks about how upset I was and was just unconsolably crying. In my kid mind then turning into trees was actually WORSE then death because they were "alive" but would be unable to do anything.
FoofaFighters@reddit
Holy hell. Dude I am in bed and this cannot be the last thing I watch tonight. 🤣
llammacheese@reddit
I always loved that ending. I thought it was so cool how when they died they became a part of the land again. I think it likely played a role in my own wish to be planted in a tree root ball when I die.
Top_Chard5757@reddit
How about a spoiler alert next time
Ghoulie_Marie@reddit
My old roommates kid cried for an entire day about that
Switchbladekitten@reddit
What! I don’t remember this omg
SalukiKnightX@reddit
I never knew the episode existed until YouTube pointed it out. I would’ve bawled if I saw this as a kid.
vintageideals@reddit
Ugh don’t remind me lol.
thewayshesaidLA@reddit
Never seen that episode before. I only saw the show when I was at a relative’s house because we didn’t have cable. I have so many questions; including is turning into trees part of gnome related folklore?
Swayze_Castle@reddit
zenprime-morpheus@reddit
The mountains of beyond are a core memory!
Such a graceful way of explaining death to children.
Basic-Biscotti-2375@reddit
Yeah fuck that I remember watching this almost every day and then this episode being like "aight we're gonna go die now lol"
DoodleJake@reddit
Was about to say. I sure remember how it ended
RustedMauss@reddit
Wait wat.

HeyAQ@reddit
Eureka’s Castle didn’t start until 89. I was in K in 86-87 and it came on after school, which ended at 11 or 11:30. Full-day K didn’t exist when I was a kid.
Adrasteia-One@reddit
That's right. I would watch it when I was home sick.
iddonuk@reddit
Once I was home sick from school and David the Gnome wasn't on that day and I cried so hard I threw up
HeyAQ@reddit
This is exactly what it felt like.
xargos32@reddit
That's a fair response.
Adrasteia-One@reddit
Aw, that sounds like an accurate small kid response!
CraigGrade@reddit
Yeah! I remember this show, then Eureka’s Castle, then Gullah Gullah Island on late mornings. Only ever saw them on snow days or when home sick. I think they had different summer programming
omnes1lere@reddit
Lol that's right! Gulla Gulla coming on meant, try the Disney channel for Care Bears I think!
Azuras_Star8@reddit

WOW, both of these are a forgotten blast from the past! We loved this growing up!
Gab83IMO@reddit
I had totally forgotton that I watched the sh*t outta this show!!
Eagleburgerite@reddit
As someone born in 1982 I can't tell you what joy this brought to me today. Haven't seen this in 35 years or so. Thank you.
Brewmeister83@reddit
I made a conscious decision about ten years ago that if I ever had a kid, this would be one of the shows from my childhood I'd get the box-set for them to watch. Much better at teaching morality than modern cartoons, and also one of the reasons I have a deep respect for trees and nature.
311Konspiracy@reddit
Vintage Nick Jr
arod1086@reddit
I'm 39 and this theme song still randomly pops into my head and I love that. They don't make them like they used to <3
thegreatturtleofgort@reddit
I was born in 85 but watched it all the time on Nickelodeon. I still have the Gnomes book too
ArtsyCoastFi@reddit
I still have mine on the bookshelf! ‘83.
NimbexWaitress@reddit
I stole this from my grandma's house
Drewanddrewanddrew@reddit
I have it too! There's one specific page that was opened to a lot though!
thegreatturtleofgort@reddit
Haha, oh I know the page. She was stacked!
Rugged420@reddit
Have the same book!! My 3yo loves it!
Last-Stop-Before-You@reddit
Some of my earliest memories are of watching this and just loving it to bits.
rexallia@reddit
This was my favorite growing up! I would go to kindergarten in the morning and then my dad would make me lunch and I’d watch this. I can taste the hot dog and rice now… so good
jessek@reddit
I remember it had the worst ending
fromthedarqwaves@reddit
Yes I watched it at my much older sisters house. My sisters name is Lisa and her husbands name is David. I thought that was a funny coincidence.
eddiebruceandpaul@reddit
Damn used to watch this and totally forgot about until seeing this post. Crazy.
rufftranslation@reddit
I LOVED this show
crackedtooth163@reddit
Yup watched it on Nickelodeon.
Prestigious-Emu5277@reddit

Striking-Access-236@reddit
Rien Poortvliet's original book is lovely, endearing and terrifying... the trolls gave me nightmares.
horusthesundog@reddit
Never even seen it growing up. Definitely looks like something I would’ve watched too. Must’ve been on a station I didn’t get.
Lothonian_Jester@reddit
YouTube was suggesting whole episodes to me a few months back... I don't know if its still on there but just a heads up.
PoppaT1203@reddit
Executives in charge of production: Harvey Weinstein?!?!
Common_Ad_7610@reddit
That explains the first episode where you meet David, and he's just casually naked in the tub.
ThaneduFife@reddit
It was made in Spain first, then dubbed for American audiences.
Otherkin@reddit
It was a Spanish production. He just stuck his name on the dub.
sorryforyachtyrockin@reddit
So Bozo really did do the dub.
CantaloupeAsleep502@reddit
Ohhhh fuuuucccckkkkk
mom_bombadill@reddit
Yeah that was a jumpscare
cbih@reddit

misterlakatos@reddit
Yes unfortunately.
ajniggles@reddit
My mom would take me to our local community center so she could do waterobics in the pool and I could play Mouse Trap in the daycare. Afterwards we’d go up to the little cafeteria and I’d get to eat my grilled cheese and chocolate milk while watching David The Gnome and Eureka’s Castle on a big projection tv.
It feels more like a dream than a memory these days
notarealgrownup@reddit
I am STILL depressed at that ending. My mom and I both sobbed.

I had my first existential crisis when he turned into a tree.
Kimberlylynn2003@reddit
I would watch this every morning!
616n8y3ree@reddit
I remember how it made me sad all the fuckin time 😅
Something about an old man holding his corner of the world together for his sweet old lady wife, that seemed genuinely scared for his safety made it hard to enjoy lol. Also animals in danger or in traps? can’t quite remember but it tripped me out for some reason.
BeaArthursSpicyTaint@reddit
Those goddamn trolls gave me nightmares for years
rwalsh1981@reddit
Loved this show when I was a yute
HeyAQ@reddit
Oh my god. My absolute favorite show from like 4-6. I was a super sensitive kid and it was all about how he helped all the animals!🥹
EnvironmentalDot127@reddit
Memory unlocked 😊 thanks!
Luftritter@reddit
Oh, very much remembered, it's a cult series. Still aired for children on TVE (the Spanish broadcaster) on weekdays morning to this day.

Only saw this when I was sick home from school at Grandma’s house. Fever dream theme song for me
UpperPossible9694@reddit
Love this show 😍😍😍
BWildeallday@reddit
I couldn't tell you if there was a show or not, but this man and all of his little companions invaded every one of my mom's shelves, cabinets, curio cabinets, and even door and window sills. An adult couldn't convince me they didn't come to life when I was asleep waaaay before Toy Story was a thing.
Willywagtail8883@reddit
Oh wow I have been trying to work out what this show was for years … the ending is burnt into my brain but I couldn’t remember any details apart from feeling sadness and doom. Thank you!

glasscut@reddit
I think I watched a bunch of these all in a row at a friend's house on VHS in the late 80s or early 90s. The song stayed in my head ever since. I never saw the show again till today. This is the first time I've found the show in almost 35 years. What a throwback. I still remember the words of the intro...
bargman@reddit
My mom always (and still) says "David AND the Gnomes."

JanetandRita@reddit
Wait, HARVEY WEINSTEIN produced this show?!
DamonAfterDark@reddit
just the english dub
JanetandRita@reddit
OMG THIS WAS A DUB THE WHOLE TIME?!
dontbajerk@reddit
There's some kind of interesting censorship occasionally VS the American version too. They cut a gnome pissing in one shot, shots of trolls with snot hanging out of them, and a still image of Lisa nursing their children I remember. Watched some of it as I'm learning Spanish.
DamonAfterDark@reddit

Toppdeck@reddit
I was happily bouncing to this song then I was like "oh no"
IndomitableAnyBeth@reddit
Enough that I remember asking if I could sleep in a cupboard like the gnome children. Or, failing that, maybe my toy box? (No, even if you don't break it, it might make you not breathe right.) How about a closet? Could I sleep in the bottom of my playroom closet, pretty please with sprinkles on top? Anyway, I did get permission to sleep in any closet for up to two weeks at a time (excepting Saturday night) so long as I kept it neat, slept well, didn't cause much inconvenience, and put everything back where I found it at the end of the agreed period. I was very happy sleeping on some pillows in a closet for one or two weeks every month for 4 months straight. Where I slept even better what having fewer distractions in a room where the window wasn't aligned with street lamp. Which got my parents to add a window shade to my curtains.
Austaras@reddit
Fucking show traumatized me to this day they turned into fucking trees. He abandons Swift. I was in tears.
Tee_i_am@reddit
My little cousins that I'd watch after school loved this show. I got sick of it quickly, but watched anyway. My mom has those little garden gnomes, and I would imagine them coming to life when we weren't looking.
Simple_Flounder@reddit
I do now....
Hello_Hangnail@reddit

JWStaples@reddit
I remember it having a gut wrenching finale. My childhood ended that day.
ridinbend@reddit
One of my childhood favorites lol
sick_of-it-all@reddit
Do I remember it? Many times a year it pops into my head and I start singing it out loud. "TROLLS AND WIZARDS, AND FAIRY KINGS! Birds that talk, and FISH THAT SING!" Love that theme song. I could probably name 100 great theme songs I still remember regularly from the '80s and '90s. How about Denver the Last Dinosaur?
At_the_Roundhouse@reddit
I said something about Getalong Gang on Reddit like a month ago and that theme song has not left my head since.
Some absolute bangers in our childhood!
JoshSidekick@reddit
I'll add the Alf cartoon and Kidd Video for great theme songs.
NighthawkCP@reddit
Duck Tales and Tale Spin had another couple of great theme songs that run through my head when I think back to those cartoons as a kid.

Before I knew about muscles and ligaments and general internal anatomy, I thought that my body (and every body) was operated by tiny little gnomes with an intricate system of levers and pulleys. I imagined our insides being hollow, like caverns.
evanweb546@reddit
This show and Gummie Bears are both burned into my brain. What a childhood.
uscarbinecal30m1@reddit
Bouncing here and there and everywhere.....
Now you're singing it too, lol.
CreampuffOfLove@reddit
When my son was a toddler (like 1.5-2), I bought the complete set of DVDs for both of these series and more! We didn't bother to get even basic TV until the kid was 7, so he grew up on these show, plus Captain Planet, Scrooge McDuck, Tail Spin, Duck Tails, and Fraggle Rock; he loved them all!
However, since we were young parents for our area/milue, none of his friends - let alone most of their parents - had ever even heard of these shows. But he's had great success in convincing his college friends to watch said shows and gained significant 'cred' with them for having "cool parents," much to his chagrin lol 😂🤷🏼♀️
ForzaFenix@reddit
I could use some Gummie Berry Juice right about now
b0w3n@reddit
Both of these, Belle and Sebastian, Mysterious Cities of Gold, and maybe the Super Mario Bros Super Show too to wrap it all up in a bow.

A day home from school sick meant all the Nickelodeon I could consume, and it was so disappointing to be met with multiple episodes of David the Gnome

Come to think of it, a lot of Nick Jr in 80s was brought in and kinda sucked

Was there one voiced by Tom Bosley? I have a memory of his voice in a knome cartoon.
Dobako@reddit
Did you...did you not watch the video? He's literally listed as David, and Christopher Plummer is the Narrator
Scrapla1@reddit
Sorry, I did not watch it.

Then what's the point in commenting?

This one was big for me. I 100% watched this in the afternoon. My mom bought the book from an American PX in Germany and I remember having the book out while watching. Then it was nap time.

This was my JAM around 4-6. I tried sharing with my daughter (3), hasn’t quite got it yet. But she WILL.

Was part of my daily viewing while visiting the grandparents for the summer. It was in the Nick Jr lineup along with Eurekas Castle, Maya the Bee, Snoozles, Grimms Fairytales.

I was given one of these books for Christmas as a child, it came with a story cassette. Two days after I received it I remember my parents watching something on TV, i don't remember if it was Amazing Stories, or Twilight Zone or what, but the episode had to do with people staying in a cabin and somehow gnomes were part of the story and then a giant, furry hand crashes through the cabin window grabbing the occupants. So needless to say, I couldn't look at the book for years after that.

Just going by the name and video, no, it doesn't seem familiar at all. But that song... I remember the song.

I do now. Forgot all about this one.
