oceanliners did the same job airliners would go on to do (travel across the ocean). When the jet airplanes got passengers they were able to do this hundreds of times faster and cheaper. Early jet airplanes like that one are pretty much the sole reason oceanliners arent around today

Queen Mary's final voyage was to Long Beach and the Douglas Aircraft company (later McDonnell Douglas which is now Boeing) had their plant in Long Beach where the built airliners like the DC-9 here
