I wonder where they are going?
Messyfingers@reddit
They do training all over southern new England pretty regularly. So it's possibly just that, or maybe an early snowbird deployment? I actually get buzzed by two ships pretty frequently, and I don't live in or particularly close to Rhode Island. CTANG doesn't seem to do as much low level stuff, and usually it's just one plane.

To add to ATC’s workload somewhere
IllGetItThereOnTime@reddit
Don’t they only talk to the lead of a formation? If I remember right on C-17’s the lead gets the clearance/does all communication with ATC.
foolproofphilosophy@reddit
My brother was navy and that’s what he told me. Lead ship does all the communication and will tell ATC how many aircraft are in the formation.
No_Chemist_7878@reddit
Doesn't help when ATC has to figure out how far back the last one is for spacing.
Toast-the-Loaf@reddit
It's probably MARSA (Military Authority Assumes Responsibility for Separation of Aircraft).
pattern_altitude@reddit
Within the formation, yeah. But they still have to figure out where all the other non-MARSA traffic has to go... they can't just plow someone through the formation.

It’s always marsa
EntertainmentLow8299@reddit
Yea until the break up and want to go to 6 different homes

Paradrop troops into Dem cities, or Canada, or Greenland, or Venezuela.

6 130s in the air at the same time. Impressive. Don't know how many times ive stood down jumping in those.
Droenra@reddit
That's an impressive formation! Aviation is so cool.
SnooPeripherals5518@reddit
I don't know if I would call that a formation...
herknav@reddit
SKE formation … WW2 battleship equipment. obviously not visual/fingertip
Mean-Amphibian2667@reddit
Staggered trail formation left...typical air force cargo aircraft formation. Being it's the weekend, these could be reserve aircraft shuttling around. Reserve crews got to train too! Capacity for 6x64 Combat equipped paratroopers, which is about a parachute infantry battalion minus headquarters and some D company personnel. Or, the whole battalion minus support personnel at the drop zone if it's a fun jump.

7 ship* i was at the base when they took off, everyone there was allowed on the ramp to watch as this hasn't happen for decades. I love RHODY

Quonset?

Just the sound must have been something. Enough to make you run outside and look up. The C-130 sounds like nothing else, having 6 going by like that is a treat-
Formal_Direction_952@reddit (OP)
C-130s fly over me so often I can distinguish the sound from typical turboprops that way I know to go outside and check it out. Sometimes I hear them, go “yup it’s a c-130” then I check flight radar 24 and sure enough it is. Or it’s a p-3 Orion on rare occasions. It’s the combo of 4 Allison turboprops that really does it. Very distinct.

Mass tactical airdrop training, or all moving stuff to the same place. That'd be my guess and the only reason I ever saw a formation of 130's.
Mudlark-000@reddit
It is about time we brought back “The Four Horsemen” C-130 performance team (also known as the “Thunderweasels”). They showed off a four-ship of C-130A models at airshows from 1954 to 1960.
Imagine what a four-ship of J-model Super Hercs could do today?
