Suggestions?

Anyone have suggestions for a manual car, preferably with pop ups like an mr2 that is reliable enough for my dad to use it to drive 100ish miles to La and back for work once or twice a month. I’ve been wanting a project car and my dad doesn’t like using his truck in La. I’m thinking at the moment an na Miata, a Toyota gr86, or an aw11 or sw20 mr2. If these work then I guess just reassure me, but if there’s something better preferably in the same style suggestions would be appreciated. Or if there’s something I can do to make those cars reliable I just need info. Thanks

C5 Corvette's are old enough now to need some replacement parts like rubber hoses and bushings, but the actual drivetrain can still be made to be very reliable and still make fun power.
Even at their weakest, they made 345HP from an undertuned V8 and could get 19MPG in the city. It also has the pop up headlights and is still small enough to parallel park in the city. Of course, it will feel big compared to a Miata but still tiny compared to a truck.

I keep trying to convince him on the c5 but he doesn’t want to seem like he’s having a midlife crisis lol

I don't feel this way, but if he wants to think by the logic of judgmental people on the street, seeing an older man driving a Miata or MR2 just screams mid-life crisis too. Except it's a mid life crisis where it could be perceived that he was too scared to buy something faster or couldn't afford it.
Same with driving an old truck in the city. There's a lot of ways to think of how people could judge him for that. "Is he a hillbilly or a poor farmer?", "Why doesn't he sell that old piece of junk and get a hybrid or electric?" are two easy ones.

Well the mr2 is mainly because it’s been a long favorite of mine and I have taken apart literally every single part on my friends na Miata, but it’s not that his truck is old it’s just way too big for La because it’s a ford raptor

Driving a mr2 or miata any different???

Not really, just a better chance with the mr2, miata was a stretch

gr86? you mean the old ae86 from the '80s?

Would love an ae86 personally, it’s one of my favorite cars but I’m talking about the newer gr86 as an option just because if it’s a better option than getting something old I wouldn’t mind one.

it's...not got those pop-up headlights though
