300+ people inside an aluminum tube so thin you can stab it with a screwdriver, flying at almost 500 knots, at 30 to 40,000 feet.
I still marvel at it and scared at the same time.
Goonie-Googoo-@reddit
2mm of aircraft grade aluminum isn't as thin or as weak as you may think.
Decent_Matter_8066@reddit
Contrary, it is. A tool drop on skin is a major hazard during maintenance. And from where I am from, engineer must be consulted to determine if a ndt is required.
Z---zz@reddit
For those not in aviation, ndt stands for nude dental technician
SpeedoTANx@reddit
I thought it was Never Dancing Tomorrow?
corkedone@reddit
No, I know exactly try how thin 2mm is.
AnohtosAmerikanos@reddit
That’s like 1/50000 of a football field, I think
BigBlueMountainStar@reddit
Anything to avoid metric hey?
BilboThe1stOfHisName@reddit
What’s 2mm in a ratio of bald eagles to hamburgers?
SpeedoTANx@reddit
Given that the average bald eagle is about 12 cheeseburgers tall, I’d say about .2
kytulu@reddit
I particularly enjoy it when I ask Google or Alexa to convert a metric number to "Freedom Units" and they respond with a Standard measurement.

About 3.5mm or so?

About 0.07874 inches, just over 1/16 of an inch thick.
If it's 6061 or some other 6000 series grade of aluminum, you're not poking a screwdriver through that without some serious speed behind it.
HarryTruman@reddit
What if I throw a screwdriver an airplane flying right at me?
TantalumMachinist@reddit
It'll make some number of revolutions before it lands in your neighbors yard.
It'll most likely bounce off their yard and then become a powerful sword for the neighbor boy.
You must find a way to defend yourself against him with his new tool.
Ilikebookstoo@reddit
That’s what she said!
NoKatyDidnt@reddit

Gitchegumi@reddit
What, you think you can just measure 2mm with your brain or something?
ninj1nx@reddit
Most of the world can. The exception are those still stuck with imperial units.
TheOriginalArchibald@reddit
When you look at something every morning that's 2mm, yea, eventually you can.
... zing.
In reality 2mm isn't weak like a soda can but it's definitely still easily puncturable by a human with a sharp or heavy object. It's strong enough for flight because of the skeleton of the fuselage. As with any surface covering on most anything.

skin's thicker on the belly for protection, the top of a 747 might be 40 thou? I can't find the answer on the googler.
fernandoz1987@reddit
When you put it like that, outside of the box… it is pretry scary/mesmerizing
xlRadioActivelx@reddit
You cannot stab a screwdriver through the skin of a commercial aircraft, they’re typically about 2mm or 0.080” thick. I work with the stuff all day, unless you had a very sturdy and very pointy screwdriver the best you could do is leave a little dent.
RiskyNight@reddit
Funny, because I can't think of any aircraft you wouldn't be able to puncture with a screwdriver. They all get holes in them from much lesser things. As an extreme example I once dropped a post-it note pad from about 2 feet above a carbon fiber aileron. It landed on its corner, punctured a hole in the aileron, and had to be sent back to be patched and repainted.
Smart-Competition509@reddit
Sorry, but that dog doesn't hunt. Even uncured gr/ep material is tougher than that.
RiskyNight@reddit
You think I made up the story for fun? What the hell is wrong with you.
Smart-Competition509@reddit
Not a thing. Prove to me using science that your assertion makes any sense.
RiskyNight@reddit
There's no assertion. I shared a story from my workplace. You're welcome. I'd be pretty dumb to not believe my own eyes and malfunction report that I filled out. It was an aileron on a carbon aerobatic aircraft. Only 2 layers of 90g carbon, no core material, just hollow with a couple ribs. Some of them get peppered with holes on the underside of the horizontal stab and elevator from fod when taxiing. Certified aircraft but very fragile.
Smart-Competition509@reddit
As a 40+ year veteran in composites lamination automation, producing equipment for all major commercial, space, and defense programs, such construction makes about as much sense as that used for the Titan submersible. The fact that someone was crazy enough to feel this airworthy is unreal. The fact that someone would actually fly it is insane.
outworlder@reddit
It's carbon fiber though, and also it's an external surface. You'll also have surfaces marked as "no step" while you can dance the Macarena inside the aircrsft. Not comparable.
RiskyNight@reddit
I don't know what your point is. I could stab a screwdriver through any surface of the aircraft. They aren't designed for that. Did you think you were flying in a hollowed out chunk of steel?
outworlder@reddit
From the outside, you might be able to, specially in areas not designed to resist impacts. Try that on the leading edges of a commercial aircraft. Not to mention, aircraft aren't just their skin.
I am positive there are many areas in the cockpit of the lowly 172s my aero club has that I couldn't possibly puncture with a screwdriver. But I could definitely make a Swiss cheese in many other areas, from the outside.
RiskyNight@reddit
Yeah an aircraft would be far too heavy if designed to resist someone stabbing it with a screwdriver. That's what aircraft engineering is all about. Only making it just strong enough, and only in the areas it needs to be.
BedCrowMancer@reddit
Not aluminum
nwpsilencer@reddit
Depends on the aircraft, where you stab it, and how pointy your screwdriver is.
It's not like the skin is 0.080" thick across the entire fuse, on the wings sure it gets pretty damn thick. Also depends on if you're flying a turbo-fan or turbo-prop plane. ATR skins get pretty thin in some places.
Then for shits and giggles, if we're talking about a Twin Otter or helicopters it gets ridiculously thin. If you pop the floorboards up by the double doors in an Otter the skin is 0.015" to 0.020". If you're heavy enough and step in the wrong spot, there's a chance you'll go through the skin or put a massive dent in it. My boss learned that lesson the hard way, and makes it a point to remind us every time one comes in.
barkwahlberg@reddit
I took their point to be that it's less then the depth of a screwdriver rather than it's so weak a screwdriver could easily puncture it
Allaplgy@reddit
What screwdriver is less than 2mm?
barkwahlberg@reddit
I said the screwdriver has greater depth than the plane skin
Allaplgy@reddit
Yes, we all assume screwdrivers are longer than 2mm. Hence the confusion about why you would think they were talking about length of the screwdriver vs the thickness of the aluminum, and not how hard it is to stab through 2mm of aircraft grade aluminum, which is possible, but not easy.
barkwahlberg@reddit
Because it's surprising that something so thin can be so strong
Allaplgy@reddit
It's more like how something so light and flexible can be so strong, since 2mm of steel is barely getting scratched by a screwdriver stab, and creases easily.
But again, what does that have to do with the length of the screwdriver?
Algapaf@reddit
A 1.5mm long one
Allaplgy@reddit
Technically correct.

What's even crazier is that both engines could literally die and the pilot can still safely land the plane. I used to be scared of flying until I realized the marvels of aeronautical engineering and flight dynamics.
Born-Process-9848@reddit
Yes exactly. The way my father explained it was to think of the air as jello and we are flying through that. If we stop we sink in the jello. Unlike in space where there is no fat air jello.

I used to date an Air Force mechanic and he would tell me that planes are exceptionally sturdy and exceptionally fragile all at once.

I think this particular fallacy comes from the idea that aluminum=aluminum foil.
Pure aluminum is very soft. The alloys that make up structural aerospace grade aluminum is not

This view absolutely cements the 747 in my head as the queen of the skies. Just insane
jahalliday_99@reddit
I flew in one just over a week ago, first time for over a decade. It’s such a nice aircraft even compared to the modern stuff like the 787, A350/380 etc.
It’s a really shame almost no one uses them for passenger services any more.
the_silent_redditor@reddit
Are you fucking joking lol.
The 747 is absolute dogshit compared to modern airliners.
Give me a 380 over that rickety-ass piece of shit any day of the week.
SelfPsychological214@reddit
Chill out lol. Of course an A380/777/A350 whatever is objectively better aircrafts but there's something special about older aircraft that can be appreciated. It's like comparing an F35 to an F4 phantom or a Harrier.
ChucksnTaylor@reddit
Uh… you ok?
Mean_Excitement_320@reddit

joesnopes@reddit

Mikic00@reddit
I say it, easily. 747 and 777 over 787 every time. As a passenger, not watching fuel consumption or maintenance. When I see 777 I feel reassured and know it'll be comfortable flight. 787 breaks my back and my ass hurts like hell after 14 hours... On all of them.
strangelymysterious@reddit
I totally agree. In my experience as a passenger the 747 was way more comfortable than the 787.
outworlder@reddit
Nobody. It's this annoying tendency some redditors have to exaggerate statements and manufacture outrage.
Poohstrnak@reddit
They never said the first bullet point. They just said it was nice, even comparing with modern airliners. There’s no implication there that it’s better. Basically just saying they still like it, even after having flown on modern airliners.
jahalliday_99@reddit
I didn’t say it was better. I said it compared well against them. It was beautifully smooth and quiet. I was surprised actually, but then there have been multiple versions of them, the newer ones have modern engines and materials so maybe that’s the difference.
the_silent_redditor@reddit
You’re insane if you would choose a 747 over essentially any other modern airliner. I’ve flown the 747 in all classes, and same on modern planes.
Yes, it’s a pretty plane and it’s the Queen blah blah blah.. it sucks as a passenger.

jahalliday_99@reddit
I flew back to back in plenty of planes recently. I’ve not been in a 747 since, I reckon, 2010, and remember the modern alternatives being so much better. However this time it was better than the 787 that followed. Although I find the 787’s emit some kind of pink noise that drives me mad. I was only in economy too on all flights.
I can’t explain why, but honestly there was little to no difference. Aside from the 787 annoying noise.

It really helps one visually understand that the atmosphere really is just a fluid. The way the condensation trails form the path of travel helps you envision this as an object piercing a medium, the way we observe a submarine propelled through deep water. That air travel is even possible (and yes, fine, human survival entirely) because we are basically in a shell made of gas measly hundred kilometers thick (or whatever it is) that we can manipulate and “swim” in is kind of mind blowing.
malcolmmonkey@reddit
Makes sense that they call it “fluid dynamics” even when they’re talking about air.
CCsimmang@reddit
Air is a fluid :)
poo-cum@reddit
I have felt a similar epiphany that's hard to verbalize - that planes are like basically ships that go so fast that the atmosphere is effectively thick and soupy like waves crashing underneath. The feeling of how they get buffeted and rocked around is the same, you're just a little dot tumbling around a powerful swell of fluid.

The atomic de-bigulator coupled with the macro compression matrix worked? I thought that was just a fairy tale they told us at Upstairs Chemical Engineering University?

Sometimes I have to remember when i ride a plane somewhere this is what it looks like from the outside and i try to not think about it too much. My brain just sort of compartmentalizes it as me riding in a bus that shakes like a city bus but also has food on it

Does Airbus have a different chemtrail dispersal system or something?

The EU regulations are stricter than the ones from the land of freedom!™️ So Airbus can't disperse as much as Boeing.

wstsidhome@reddit
What altitude was this at, and what plane was it filmed from? Absolute brilliant video…I can’t believe they’d show the chem trails being used in real time
AideLongjumping1767@reddit
Does everyone in the real world agree the trails are just temperature differentials and condensation?!? I’m not crazy. Right?
Thisguymoot@reddit
Absolutely. And they’re more pronounced when the humidity rises in the upper atmosphere—we get wispy cirrus clouds, often a preview to stormier weather. This is a unique view, with high contrast and some cool filtering to make all the vapor look super solid, but it’s the same thing. Gorgeous shot.
pornborn@reddit
Not temperature differentials per se, but moisture becomes visible when the temperature of the air reaches its dew point. It all revolves around the dew point. Even if the temperature didn’t change but you increase the saturation, you are also increasing the dew point.
Here’s a little trick to estimate the bases of clouds. If you know the temperature and the dew point for a a given location, you can estimate the cloud bases using the “standard lapse rate” of the atmosphere which is 3.5°F (2°C) per one thousand feet (305 meters). So if it’s 81°F and the dew point is 60°F and there are clouds present, the bases of the clouds would be at about 6,000 feet.
81°F - 60°F = 21°F
21°F / (3.5°F/1.000 ft) = 6,000 ft
