Ramen flavor packets

I do a lot of ramen “twists” for my family where I only use the noodles and make my own sauce/broth. I started saving the flavor packets a while back and I’m starting to amass quite the stack, well over 100. I’ve always kept a very healthy amount of rice on hand - at least I know I can always add some flavor to them!

I also do this. My mom once used leftover ramen packets for a potroast and it was AMAZING.
On really cold evenings, I like to use a packet mixed with hot water and just sip it.
I recently discovered that I enjoy canned quail eggs (in water, not bring). I especially like to boil water, season it with chicken ramen seasoning, toss in the quail eggs. The eggs are already cooked before canning. But this improves the flavor and softens the yolk somehow.

One of my co-worker's husband works for Nissan foods, making those for a living. They always have free samples, telling me about the latest flavor, etc.
Apparently they even have a turkey dinner, and pumpkin pie flavored one.
Anyway, that couple has the most health problems of any of the people I know, and so do both their kids.
Kind_Ice4996@reddit
The pumpkin flavor was pretty good.
infinitum3d@reddit
Is it pumpkin flavor or pumpkin spice flavor (cinnamon and nutmeg)?
I got a pumpkin flavor coffee once by mistake and it was horrid! 😂

You're not a true white girl then!

Seems the packets are very high sodium for my taste (and health)
Unfair-Law9265@reddit
Try half a packet...I bet you eat the shit out of McDonald's fries tho
Schlongsterish@reddit
I don't hardly ever eat fast food - I used to but stopped about 6l5 years ago it was cloggin' me arteries too much. (Admittedly yes, you are correct; I will steal a McD French fry if a friend has some).
I throw the packets away and use my own sauce; lately its been some Virtnamese Tom Yum soup paste. Sometimes I'll use Pad Thai sauce, or k8nda a brother thing Inmix up myself based on eating at Tokyo noodle shops at 2am after rolling in from the bars downtown.
My favorite noodle dish was k8nda a version of Jya jeans mein -a spicy pork Ramen with chopped green onions, steamed white onions, finely ground spicy pork meat, and a boiled egg sliced in half. I usually would get potstickers on the side (the best potstickers in the world made right in front of you by hand). And a either a cup of tea or a Coca Cola.

Or just make your own?

Any sort of flavouring is good to store, whether its juice, broth, or sauce. Calories, nutrients, and water are not THAT hard to get or store, but happiness is much more difficult, and morale will be just as important as safety in any sort of shtf scenario
WeinerBarf420@reddit
This is why I always keep pop tarts. Calorie to weight ratio up there with MREs but also just a delicious treat when things are bad
infinitum3d@reddit
Shelf life of unopened pop tarts is apparently 6-12 months after the Best By date.
Great prep!
jandmhaj@reddit
Fair warning: when they do actually 'expire' they turn super nasty. The flavor goes bitter AF, and the texture similar to cardboard. Had some backup in my desk drawer at work, tried to eat one and had to throw the rest away.
Extreme_University80@reddit
I can confirm this. Both graham crackers and pop tarts eventually turn into a super oily, foul tasting cardboard mess.
WeinerBarf420@reddit
I would be surprised if they ever really became went bad. Loaded with sugar and nitrogen-purged in individual bags. I'd probably eat a 10 year old poptart with no real reservations
bananapeel@reddit
If you get MREs or Humanitarian Daily Rations, you will sometimes get a pop tart. They leave them in the original foil wrapper, then put that inside a regular MRE retort pouch for long life and durability. I've eaten one that was more like 15 years old and it was just fine. A little crumbly.

I have two hacks to increase your QOL while eating ramen... peanut butter and tortilla shells.
When you're cooking your noodles use just enough water to cover the noodles so that they end us soaking up all of the water to the point you end up with al dente noodles, but not a lot of liquid left over. Then add your seasoning packet and a tsp-tbsp of peanut butter and stir up real well. Slap it onto a tortilla shell with a few jalapenos and roll it up and eat it like a burrito. Bonus points (15g of fiber per shell) if you use the Carb Balance tortillas from Mission.
Crazy the things you learn in prison.

I wonder if there's a way to buy packets without the noodles? Since they can be used on rice, stews, etc these would be great to keep. If I'm eating Ramen though I don't save the packets--I use them.

I checked many years ago and couldn’t find a way. There were people selling them on eBay though
MountainTaker@reddit
This is a pretty good idea, I hadn't thought of specifically storing flavoring for food.
Rojina47788@reddit
That’s actually genius! I keep a jar full of those packets for lazy nights, just toss one into rice or veggies and it tastes way better right away.
kkinnison@reddit
each packet has 50% of the recommended daily allowance of salt. if i am using one, usually a half packet is enough for me
dont have more then 1
Optimal-Summer-236@reddit
for rice to add flavor i use the knorr chicken or tomato bouillon powder. Then in the rice cooker you can add maybe a 1/4 can- 1/2 of pinto beans right in there with the rice. Then serve with a little cheese on top and a few tortillas. Chefs kiss.
NeatPersonality9267@reddit
Try adding a bit of cumin next time. Definitely completes the flavor profile, imo
Optimal-Summer-236@reddit
I add a lot of things I was simplifying for this post I make spanish rice basically and yellow rice. Just saying people who prep the big humongous knorr seasonings are $5-$6 you will have rice and beans that taste fantastic in the apocalypse!
Ra_a_@reddit
I thought they had hydrogenated oils in them and go rancid
enolaholmes23@reddit
Often the herb packet is separate from the oil packet. Or some kinds don't seem to have oil.
churnopol@reddit
Soy ramen packet + Worcestershire sauce = umami bomb.
Add some to your canned chili and stews for a much needed flavor boost. I pressure canned Japanese beef hayashi (stew) and curry. Flavors definitely dull down when pressure canning and this seasoning really helps bring your canned meals back to life.
Xsiah@reddit
Just buy a bag of MSG, that's basically what's in those.
PrisonerV@reddit
MSG is fine. It's the salt that you really don't want.
Happy_Raspberry_6299@reddit
You can use the flavor packets in rice, other noodles, or beef up flavor in a roast or other meat dish. You can drink it as broth if need be. Good things to keep on hand.
Cold-Call-8374@reddit
I was about to say, using them to make rice is delicious. Especially the chicken or beef flavor.
No_Character_5315@reddit
Or just get chicken or beef flavor ones it's basically chicken/beef bouillon can added to lots of stuff.
WTFisThatSMell@reddit
Wish I could buy bulk ramen seasoning.
ChronicLegHole@reddit
ID probably go Maggi flavor cubes before Ramen packets.
Street_Captain4731@reddit
I know that the beef ones at least can last 10+ years. They're basically just salt and bouillon.
Reasonable_Long_1079@reddit
A local butcher shop around me makes their own seasoning mixes and i keep a couple of my favs in the emergency food box, and salt, dont forget the salt people!
More_Dependent742@reddit
Exactly, just use them in place of salt, like in rice. They last a long time, but any with fat in them (which is usually the more expensive ones) can go rancid eventually.
The_Latverian@reddit
Yeah, I have close to 100 as well
CaliforniaJade@reddit
I just picked up a bottle of "Miso & Easy", which has a shelf life of 2 years. I've saved the ramen flavor packets too, for me, they didn't store well over time.
daringnovelist@reddit
When I have a sore throat or stuffed up sinuses, I heat some water and use a little ramen seasoning, and add a little spice and a little sour (vinegar, lemon, lime) to make a hot and sour soup drink.
Decent-Cricket-5315@reddit
I wonder could you make a jerky marinade out of it.
Alarming-Upstairs963@reddit
Those noodles are like the worst carbs you can eat. The packets have a very high salt content and a rancid taste a few months after expiring.
