Why aren’t there more games like Sims?

I’m pregnant, nauseous and exhausted. I have an Xbox and I need games so I can mindlessly disassociate. Growing up I was obsessed with Sims. Why tf aren’t there more games like that for people who aren’t into scary violent killing? I’m partial to games like Assassin’s Creed and Ghost of Tsushima, but they’re still so violent and I could do without the cortisol spikes. Can anyone recommend any games I might enjoy?

Op asked for "non violent games" though, not games with the same game mechanics as the Sims. So one could gather by "like the sims" from the context, that they meant the "non violent" aspect of it...as thats what OP said.

I second this - the way time works in the game (plus just how great it is) means it’s the best form of distraction, I played it when I was super unwell for a few days and was distracted for HOURS at a time without noticing!

Nope, I bought Stardew as people constantly said how laid back it was, I’ve tried it about 4 or 5 times over the years and just can’t get it to click at all, I think I’d love it if they let you double the day length as it has a lot of elements I’d really like, but the days just fly by, I doubt it’ll ever be an option on the Switch sadly, it barely feels like I’ve got enough to do the stuff like watering, never mind all the community centre stuff! Animal Crossing fits the bill for me quite nicely on this genre of game.

I hate timed games as in day or night cycle because I waste too much time and panic I’m not making decisions fast enough. So honesty I’d recommend just installing mods that allow you to freeze time. So every day I get to like chill set up my plans for the day and then unfreeze time. It will ruin the game if you play frozen all the time but sometimes I just want to walk in circles building a cute flower garden without worrying my crops aren’t being farmed lol.

If you allow the Community Centre to take the two years it's 'supposed' to, then it's a lot easier and a *lot* less stressful! You make all your friends by just saying 'hi' in passing or popping in on a visit while foraging or whatever. You barely mine at all before the winter. You do quests if you feel like it or have the goods handy.

I'm growing blueberries and melons but next year I'm going to be all blueberries for that 'pop pop pop' of harvest! I'm doing a monoculture run, just raw crops, no processing. This summer I needed crops for the Community Centre. Damn I love this game. Been playing it since the year it came out.

I'm not sure if Medieval Dynasty is on xbox or not but it's about running a little town and building houses/decorating for your villagers, making money through crafts and collecting herbs/mushrooms/etc.

I dont know why this is on AskUK but you might want to consider the Two Point series: Two Point Museum Two Point Hospital Two Point Campus This series is made by some of the team that made the original Theme Hospital / Theme Park games back on the first Playstation.

Theme Hospital is an all-timer for me. Two Point has tried to recreate the magic, and in some respects succeeds, but I feel really frustrated by all the locked features I can't use until I've played the game enough. That bothers me. It's different to new missions bringing new diseases and new equipment; the modern "unlocking" features are simply annoying.

I didn't feel like the unlocks were overly gated. The Kudosh feels scarce at first but you're soon swimming in it as the little achievements early on are pretty trivial to complete, people just forget to "claim" some of the Kudosh, it's not always automatic. You do unlock more advanced illnesses and diagnosis as the game progresses and I think that's fair to ease a new player into the game mechanics, original Theme Hospital probably did that too, I don't think you had every illness on the first map.

I don't mind the illnesses and diagnoses. That's game progression and new mechanics being introduced. That's more than fine and indeed the original did exactly that. I do mind being locked off from cosmetic decorations or whatever early on. I found it really frustrating and unnecessary. I don't derive any extra pleasure from unlocking those items via an additional currency with more steps, and it annoys me partly because the original game didn't have it and partly because it's a horrible trope of modern games to artificially increase longevity by locking content that you've paid for behind more doors that have to be opened. As Dara O'Briain put it, no other art form does this; books don't stop you from reading page 36 until you've read page 200. Progression is fine, and introducing complexity gradually is good game design; but those items are not strictly necessary anyway. If they were, you would have to have access to continue the games. But you don't. So why lock them away at all? I've paid for them. Let me use them.

Oh I have it. Along with Sim City 2000 and 3000 and Cleopatra and Caesar III and Settlers 2 and all the games I used to play. But I also bought Two Point Hospital hoping it might provide a new but similar experience. And as I said, it sort of did, but ultimately left me feeling a bit disappointed.

I'm old school as well, when DLCs were actually expansion packs and meaningful. The only developer that seems to "get" that these days is CDPR with Witcher and Cyberpunk. Shitting on TPH feels a little the wrong target, I've had a lot of fun with it and didn't find the unlocks prohibitive.

Theme Hospital had a magic to it that Two Point never captured imo, even though it tried. It was the subtle humour and cultural references, like when you're employing a caretaker and it describes his personality profile as 'likes trip hop music' or something... Which kind of gives such a huge profile of that character, there were several other cookie examples and caricatures of people Two Point seemed to miss that kind of subtly and fun and instead relied on copying and expanding the more generic humour from Theme Hospital with silly diseases etc.. Add to that the game is pretty repetitive.. it's just add rooms, basic management, and spam a load of the same room, then next hospital. Idk, after a while it all just felt very unfulfilling

I just wish there was more of a free-play version mode where there's no missions or aims and your land-use isn't overly restricted, that way you could just keep building and building to meet the ever growing demand and then have to remap everything as you go along to meet the logistical challenges of wait-times and patients getting lost and so on.

There is, isn't there? I'm pretty sure there's a sandbox mode? And it would only go so far, IIRC there's a cap of around 250/300 patients as any more than that starts to degrade performance.

If you're hitting the patient cap, your hospital should be running fine, so short of absolutely flooding your hospital with patients you have no chance of treating, there'd be little point to it. In later DLCs I think they introduced wave maps, so rather than a few patients arriving at a time, you got a full 20/30/50/100 hitting your hospital at once!

i'm on PS5 and can't get the last 2 DLC's thst came out for hospital 😕 I would love for thrm to bring out a sequel to Hospital, on top of whatever comes next. Museum is good but I don't feel there's as much strategy with it as Hospital, and i just really did not like Campus. Felt I was just buying stuff for the students and not actually running much. OP - there's great suggestions on here already, I recommend Stardew Valley, Two Point Hospital/Museum and Gas Station Simulator, if you'd like to run a gas station 😂😂 just switch off Dennis in the options as he's a nightmare

City builders? I was OBSESSED with Pharaoh as a kid, you built and ruled Ancient Egyptian cities that would develop over the generations. There were other historical ones and modern ones too. Unpacking - what it says on the tin Slime Rancher - fun exploration game Life is Strange - story game Spiritfarer - another story game but with some resource gathering, may or may not be your thing House Flipper - if you like the building aspect of sims this might be good for you! Date Everything - more a visual novel, but if you liked sims romance anf chaos this might be good Growing Up - a life sim/visual novel about honing skills and, yes, growing up The last three are probably most likely your cup of tea if you want something with sims characteristics, but they're still very different. All games i suggested are non-violent (would have suggested stardew but there's some combat)

Everyone is saying Stardew Valley, so I'll suggest Harvest Moon. Inzoi is like Sims 4 but won't be on console until 2026. Search for cosy games. There are a few in the f2p market and also gacha games like Genshin, Zenless Zone Zero or Honkai Star Rail.

It’s a story based game where you build things to improve a Wild West style town. The characters are fun and I love the humour and dialogue! There is a little bit of fighting but that isn’t the focus. Any “violence” is mild - close to slapstick. One piece of advice, if you do play; don’t feel that you have to rush ahead with story quests! It’s a really long game and there is plenty of content BUT …you can take it your own pace. You can just stop doing things for days at a time. There is no need to rush!

There are so many non-violent games though. . . the cosy game genre has really taken off. I can think of quite a few but they're not all on Playstation. I am a big Sims player and I play Disney Dreamlight Valley, which is on Playstation and also there is an Apple Arcade Edition if you're with Apple. It's one of my most played games.

Idk if it's on Xbox, so ignore me if it's not.. but if you want a more gritty and 'adult' version of the Sims 4, you should try Rimworld. It's not exactly the same, and it takes a bit of getting used too. But I play it as a life simulator. You can build a colony, have children, decorate things.. commit war crimes... And uh, yeah lots more. 🤭🤭

Try r/girlgamers - we often have discussions about these types of games and it’s a lot less toxic than the “you’re not a real gamer” type communities which can exist around Reddit. I’d recommend Minecraft on Peaceful personally, or Stardew Valley. Other suggestions to google cozy games are good ones. Oh and there’s a fantastic one called Unpacking which I absolutely loved when I played it.

Have you played Two Point Hospital, its from the original team that made Theme Hospital and retains the humour. They've made Campus which i don't personally like, and Museum is the latest which is brill but Two Point Hospital remains unsurpassed.

And then for action level violence but with story you've got things like Tomb Raider, God of War, Dragon Age, Skyrim, Horizon Zero Dawn and so many more. Get into the PlayStation store, have a browse, play some demos and buy something fun!

There's a decent selection of "cosy games" on Xbox Gamepass. Plenty of simulator type games - power wash simulator, farm simulator, truck simulator, theme park simulator and so on. Some other gentle story type games too. Might be worth signing up for just a month to see what you think. I like that you can stream games as well, easy to try something out and then not waste time downloading it if you don't like it!

Medieval Dynasty. Although you do have to hunt animals to get food, but once you’ve got enough NPC villagers you can just assign one of them to do it all. You basically just build yourself a village bit by bit, doing missions to get money and reputation. Eventually you can set up a farm and grow your own food and materials which you can then sell for money. You recruit other people who don’t live in any of the surrounding villages, and you assign them to different jobs like farming, hunting, building etc. Very peaceful game and easy game. Fun to play with other players but you can just do a solo save if you want to play just by yourself. Highly recommend!

I like some of the Frontier games for this. Planet Zoo, Planet Coaster 2, Jurassic World Evolution 3 just came out last week too. It scratches the same itch as The Sims but it's different. Similar in that you can go as deep as you want on different aspects like building or managing things. Also in the spirit of it being AskUK (although Frontier are based here too), Forza Horizon 4 is good. You just drive around a mini UK and do stuff. It's better than it sounds.

Also Donkey Kong Bananza actually made me cry haha it's so so fun and sweet Peak if you want to play with friends and climb a mountain together, Minecraft is a classic (I mean you do hit things but I wouldn't call it violent) If you like management type games then Two Point Hospital and other games in that series would be a shout. Stardew, animal crossing, basically any farming simulator there’s so many it’d be impossible to list them all. Then another one is Minecraft sure you can play it with hostile mobs but you can also just switch to peaceful and play the game as a survival building simulator there’s only deaths you need to worry about are from your own mistakes and not from combat scenarios. Or skip the survival and just play creative and spend your time building whatever you want with zero limits.

There are loads of chilled out games, though I guess they don't come up unless you're searching for specific things. Search around for cosy games or job sims. Stardew Valley (farming life sim), Islanders (cute puzzler), Slime Rancher (farming/exploration with slimes) are 3 that I personally enjoy and are probably on playstation. I'm big into my more action/story heavy stuff, but these games are pretty fun and aren't super stressful unless you make them that way by taking them too seriously.

Stardew valley is a slow paced side scroll game revolving around farming, collecting and tasks. There are some monsters to battle but they are easy and in the mines as optional. My time at portia is kind of like a 3d version of that and is colourful and fairly slow pace. It's set in a time after robots and mutants took over the world. Now they have mostly depleted the town people have come out of their bunker and are rebuilding. You play a builder who helps to rebuild the town. There are some monster battles too but again can be avoided for the most part. There's still enough gameplay outside of the main storyline. You can marry and have children and upgrade your house in that too. Its pretty slow going and to start I took time getting into it but I really enjoyed it. Dreamlight valley is like animal crossing but Disney. Again a slow paced storyline that you can dip in and out. And character side quests that are up to you. The game has farming, mining, fishing as well as many other activities. They are constantly adding free updates. All games are on xbox, PlayStation, PC and Nintendo switch.

I got heavily into Dyson Sphere Program, a factory game where the only violence is against mindless robots. It's good fun, very deep, and if you're feeling chilly this Autumn you can warm yourself by the heat coming off your graphics card.

Weird, I feel like a good portion of the games I play are non-violent. Most of the rest my have violence, but are pretty laid back and chill in terms of pacing and engagement. How hard are you looking? Are you searching by genre? I don't feel like it's difficult to find what you're asking for.

The search term you're looking for is "Cozy Games." There are actually tonnes of them, there just weren't as many back in the day, but there are now. I don't personally play them, but trust me, you'll find what you need.

Stardew Valley! Disney Dreamlight Valley? Simulations in general? That covers a big list, I couldn't comment for PlayStation specifically I'm afraid but things like Powerwash Simulator, Farming Sims, etc.
