ULPT: Aggressive drivers won't let you merge into traffic?

Just look for the closest Tesla and jump in front of it and it will auto brake and let you in. They even swerve out of your way if you cut them off. They're so polite.
Works great with self driving cars like Waymos too.
El_Cartografo@reddit
Or, you could just learn how to properly merge
og_speedfreeq@reddit
There are definitely a class of drivers who see you coming down the ramp, matching speed with traffic, and signaling your intent... who then speed up to close the gap, causing you to have to brake check, setting the whole concertina in motion. Now the person behind them has to slow more than they should to let you in, and then everybody behind them has to check up, and five minutes later there's a traffic jam a quarter mile back.
Just because one dickhead wouldn't maintain a gap big enough for you to drop in.
So go on with your "learn to merge properly." It's a team sport, champ.
Original_Telephone_2@reddit
A turn signal isn't a request, it's a warning. I'm coming over, and the road in front of your car isn't yours to grant or deny.
mtn-cat@reddit
You're completely wrong, but okay. as the one merging over, you do not have the right away and the other car does not legally have to let you over.
Few_Ad_7613@reddit
It's "Right Of Way", not 'right away'. And you are correct in what your saying.
Original_Telephone_2@reddit
See, there it is. "let". It's not your road, and you don't have the right to deny me. I'm coming over. I signalled and now here I come.
hbic@reddit
…dude come on
Original_Telephone_2@reddit
I am. When I put on my turn signal, and you speed up to close the gap, you're the asshole, and I'm coming over.
hbic@reddit
No one talking to you has at all advocating for speeding up to close the gap…
I think we actually all agree that no one owns the lanes
But LEGALLY the person in the lane has the right of way. There is a balance that we all play on the road.
Often the people trying to merge are not playing “fair.” That being said no excuse for someone to speed up just to block unless you’re completely playing unfairly
mtn-cat@reddit
Dude, you sound so ignorant. It sounds like you're an asshole driver and you need to brush up on your traffic laws.
regulator9000@reddit
The person merging does not have the right of way
senditloud@reddit
For you maybe but legally it’s a request. They aren’t legally obligated to let you over
Those people are dicks though unless you’re skipping a line, going way too F-ing slow or doing something unsafe
InclinationCompass@reddit
I once had a mean lady deliberately prevent me from merging onto the freeway in front of her. She mad dogged me the entire time 😭. Some of these drivers are crazy.
perpetual__ghost@reddit
See: 96% of drivers in Dallas/Fort Worth, where using your blinker to signal a lane change is showing weakness.
og_speedfreeq@reddit
I always say it's a turn SIGNAL, not a request. My car cost $500...
perpetual__ghost@reddit
I’ve definitely adopted this mindset when driving my busted 4Runner. Unfortunately for me, I care too much about my other car. It’s like Mad Max out there.
Whowhatwhen20@reddit
Wrong sub.
SgtMac02@reddit
And what's the "proper" way that negates everyone else being a dickhead and not letting you in?
schaudhery@reddit
As a former Tesla driver, don’t do this. The software sucks ass and it’s likely to just accelerate into you.
VintageKofta@reddit
As a former Tesla driver, fuck Elon Musk, and fuck Nazism.
RAV4 FTW.
Sea_Bear7754@reddit
It’s a car buddy not a political statement.
Atlas-The-Ringer@reddit
Car nazi spotted
Sea_Bear7754@reddit
lol
Atlas-The-Ringer@reddit
Glad at least one person got the joke
Sea_Bear7754@reddit
I don’t mind it. When Biden was in office the MAGAs would try to run me off the road and I always figured they had more weapons in the car than I did so I kept my distance. Now under Trump when the Prius with the Hillary sticker tries to run me off the road I lean into the lane more because it’s a Prius and I know I have more weapons in the car than they do.
Much better times now.
schaudhery@reddit
What were all those Teslas doing on the front lawn of the White House?
NorweiganJesus@reddit
Quoting the sticker on the back? Lol
RIPGoblins2929@reddit
Pfft I've been cutting of Teslas for years just on principle.
fluiflux@reddit
Same. If they try to retaliate, they can't, the car doesn't let them. Just a little step on the gas pedal and they're back in their lane. Fun to see them rage and be unable to do something about it.
educatedtiger@reddit
Sounds like a group of well-coordinated aggressive cars could practically drive a Tesla from the outside. Make it stop, change lanes, get off at the wrong exit... Man, remind me to never get a self-driving car.
fluiflux@reddit
I'm pretty sure I wouldn't need a group, I could do it alone.
juls_397@reddit
I'm imagining you driving around like a shepherd dog on a field of sheep haha
fluiflux@reddit
It's more like single cow nudging another cow from the side, they pussy out instantly. They do have cameras, though.
DookieShoez@reddit
Trizmagestus@reddit
Sucks, they probably won't run into walls, though. 😥
Kalshan@reddit
A plot to a new Fast and Furious movie?
BladeGrim@reddit
I mean, you can do this with regular cars too, you just need to be a bit more aggressive
foodrunner464@reddit
Tesla was already quite low on the list of cars id consider and this just put them in dead last.
TexasBurgandy@reddit
This is the way!
SpeedflyChris@reddit
Here in the UK our plates helpfully indicate the year of purchase, so as a point of principle I absolutely will not ever let a 2024/25 Tesla out of a junction or into a lane. Fuck your swasticar.
Trizmagestus@reddit
God's work.
H_J_Moody@reddit
This works with almost any newer model car. Not the swerving part but the auto braking part.
CMDR-LT-ATLAS@reddit
I disabled that feature with my scanner tool.
GenosT@reddit
Idk why you're getting downvoted when people drove for decades without auto-braking and still do, the hivemind is crazy
CMDR-LT-ATLAS@reddit
Hivemind is unable to accept that some individuals prefer to be in full control of their vehicles.
Travelingbunny20@reddit
Then I hope you are driving a stick shift. Automatic is for pussies. lol
CMDR-LT-ATLAS@reddit
I only drive MT, no DSG here. 3 pedals and pure joy.
Travelingbunny20@reddit
Same here. And I taught our daughters as well. There were tears......lol
GenosT@reddit
Well said, driving a 1996 right now with absolutely 0 driving assists and plan to keep it that way
da5id2701@reddit
FYI motor vehicle fatalities per 100M miles traveled in the US were 50% higher in 1996 than in 2019 (post-covid rates spiked, but still not to 1996 levels). Safety has improved with newer technology.
GenosT@reddit
I believe it, and I'm not doubting safety features. But no one should be obligated to drive with them on, clearly they're working and that's good but there are capable drivers out there who can drive without them on
da5id2701@reddit
Yeah but 80% of drivers believe they're above average. Everyone thinks they're too good to need safety features, when the stats prove otherwise.
chad917@reddit
You do not have the processing speed or reflexes of a microprocessor.
CMDR-LT-ATLAS@reddit
I do not, but my microprocessor has made more mistakes than I ever have while driving.
GenosT@reddit
Of course not. But I wanted to buy an older car so I did, I'm also just not a fan of paying monthly for a car or dealing with the hassle of newer vehicles. So it's just something I'll have to deal with, is what it is
H_J_Moody@reddit
There’s nothing wrong with buying an older car. The issue is with buying a newer car and then using a tool to disable a safety feature that is intended to prevent a crash.
H_J_Moody@reddit
See you at the Darwin awards ceremony!
notproudortired@reddit
People were actually driving cars for a century, even braking with their own feet. Crazy, right?
da5id2701@reddit
And the motor vehicle fatality rate per distance driven has dropped by 20x in that time due to safety measures (source). Mostly seatbelts of course, but that includes automatic emergency braking as well.
AEB in particular reduces rear-end crashes by 25-50% and pedestrian crash risk by up to 27%.
So yeah, people have been driving without safety measures for a long time, and killing themselves and others frequently as a result. There's clearly room for improvement.
H_J_Moody@reddit
And people drove without seatbelts for a while too.
CMDR-LT-ATLAS@reddit
I can't wait!
Ancient-Block-4906@reddit
Same as well as the veer correction. The veer correction was misinterpreting long curvy roads and causing me to fight my steering will not go over correct.
Haven’t had a ticket or been in an accident in over a decade. I like to think I’m a very careful driver.
CMDR-LT-ATLAS@reddit
Got rid of that too.
HeebieBeeGees@reddit
I recently traded my car in for the Adaptive Cruise Control and immediately realized why every other driver drives like a lobotomite 😭 but i honestly think the tesla drivers' driving skills have atrophied with the use of autopilot.
gbchaosmaster@reddit
The New York way is to put your wheel over the line, hold it there for a second, then slowly go the rest of the way into the lane. They might not want to let you in, but they still don’t want to get into an accident. If they honk… that means they saw you, now you’re definitely good.
MaxwellSmart07@reddit
I stopped signaling for lane changes on L.A. freeways because that was a signal for them to speed up and not let you in.
CTallPaul@reddit
Signaling in LA is different… it means I’m coming into your lane on purpose at this moment. Im not asking in telling
MaybeTheDoctor@reddit
I learned this driving style once I lived a short while in Rome Itally, I think it was invented there.
Fun fact: Rome is the only place I know that can turn a 4 lane motorway into 6 lanes are rush hours - somehow drivers have agreed on imaginary non-existent lane lines.
WorldsMostDad@reddit
I hate driving in Rome. I've driven all over the world. I'm a driving ninja warrior. Fuck driving in Rome.
MaybeTheDoctor@reddit
Did you know that in Rome, cars with visible dents has automatic right of way at all intersections?
Revolutionary-Half-3@reddit
I'm on the other side of the country, but I used to do that with my antique military truck. 130hp and 14,000Lbs empty, the only vehicles it passed had their hood up.
If I turned on my signal, it was because I was moving, and whatever car was in the lane needed to GTFO. Not enough power to flow down and pull in behind someone, and definitely not enough to come to a stop and reaccelerate to highway speeds safely.
Trizmagestus@reddit
It's also fun in a semi.
(–or so I hear.)
Clutiecluu@reddit
Even in Georgia we called it the “ LA merge “
Disgruntled_Smitty@reddit
I don't signal for lane changes period because it's a sign for people to speed up and close the gap matter what location I'm in.
Boson347@reddit
I also don’t stop at red lights or stop signs because it’s a sign for other cars to get a right of way before me- definitely something me and my micropenis cannot tolerate.
Disgruntled_Smitty@reddit
Well 30 years of driving and it hasn't gotten me killed yet. I'm fairly certain I'd be dead by now if I didn't stop when supposed to.
nochinzilch@reddit
Just use that to your advantage and get behind them.
ZeroCrits@reddit
I promise you, most teslas don’t have that on. I have all self driving safety features turned off and it has backfired on most idiots (they don’t hit me but literally stop in the middle lane and can’t get out)
CommunityGlittering2@reddit
be fucking patient and wait your turn
Oak510land@reddit (OP)
That might make sense in a different sub.
Apprehensive_Hat8986@reddit
I've taught defensive driving and would be remiss to recommend your tactic. But this is ULPT and you are correct.
Oak510land@reddit (OP)
You should add this one to your curriculum.
DabbieMcDoob@reddit
the Yoshi effect...proceeded by the mario swing.
NurseKaila@reddit
I thought we were different over here. I thought we knew a good joke when we saw one. These comments are making me rethink some things.
Revolutionary-Half-3@reddit
Cardboard cutout on an RC car.
tilldeathdoiparty@reddit
Or just learn how to drive, why are people such cowards????
_B-166-ER_@reddit
Or grow some balls and learn how to cut people off properly
UnethicalLifeProTips-ModTeam@reddit
Your comment was removed for violating rule 14: No reason to be a dick. Seriously, get therapy or fuck off.
koyaani@reddit
And be ready to join in if they start honking the horn
Justifiers@reddit
I have driven one for years now and my car has never once braked for any vehicles in any circumstances automatically unless self driving was activate
Even when approaching stopped traffic on the interstate, even when cut off in city traffic at 80mph with the vehicle in front nearly touching it won't do anything if you're actively driving. Even when a deer jumped out in front of me, absolutely nothing.
Semis, trucks, fire trucks, trains, cars, animals? Doesn't care about any of that it'll slam you right into them if you've got your foot on the acceleration pedal
It'll make lots of flashy lights and sounds, which may cause some drivers to remove their foot from the accelerator, which in one pedal driving terms means brakes but nothing more
SrErik@reddit
Teslas only do this on FSD or Autopilot.
mister_nimbus@reddit
AEB is always active regardless of the driving mode you're in...
SrErik@reddit
Not an expert, but I think AEB is only if the driver is unresponsive. If I'm on the accelerator, then I can be a dlck and not let somebody merge.
If I'm on Autopilot, then it'll slow down quickly if someone starts to merge in.
mister_nimbus@reddit
Regardless of if it can be disabled, it is very likely to be enabled. Regardless of that fact, you shouldn't count on it to be enabled.
stupefy100@reddit
Not an expert so don't talk. AEB is always on unless you specifically go into settings and turn it off
SrErik@reddit
I'm not an expert, but I have a Tesla so I've experience it's behavior while merging. Interesting that the AEB setting is inside the Autopilot settings.
https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/modely/en_us/GUID-8EA7EF10-7D27-42AC-A31A-96BCE5BC0A85.html#CONCEPT_E2T_MSQ_34
I can tell you the pressing the accelerator can prevent a merge. I'm not sure if it prevents a rear end accident if you press the accelerator when they're in front of you.
stupefy100@reddit
Point is AEB is still on. Yes, you can override it, but it is still on by default and will initially brake.
connormce10@reddit
it can be turned off
mister_nimbus@reddit
But you can't rely on it to be off that's the point.
Baronwm@reddit
I installed a traffic cone on my trailer hitch. It's hilarious to watch the car automatically jam its brakes on the freeway.
dronesitter@reddit
Oh buddy, mad max will run you down right now. Maybe wait a bit on that one.
octopus4488@reddit
Witness me!!
kangaroonemesis@reddit
Skill issue
Rachel_Silver@reddit
My mother did that the last time I rode as a passenger in a vehicle she was driving. I said, "This guy's trying to merge." She said, "I have the right of way!" I made her pull over and switch seats.
I had never felt comfortable with her driving. She only used her mirrors when in reverse, but I was always acutely aware of all the people who desperately wanted to pass her. Even as a passenger, she was a terror; I almost got in an accident at an intersection where I had the right of way because I was unaware she had waved the other driver on from the passenger seat.
