Are firearms the best defense against a humanoid robot?
Posted by apola@reddit | preppers | View on Reddit | 541 comments
Given that many companies are actively developing humanoid robots for use in household environments, it seems likely that within the next few years, there will be humanoid robots everywhere that are capable of being remotely operated. This has me wondering, what is the best way to quickly disable a robot? Surely firearms would work, but are there better options?

Just for clarification - we are a LONG WAY AWAY from seeing humanoid robots presenting anything close to a threat right now. But it is worth discussing.
We will sooner see the robotic "dogs" put to use. We are CURRENTLY seeing drones - both controlled and a few autonomous - for surveillence and as battlefield weapons.
While basically any firearm works against any of these threats, we need to be careful not to slip into the mindset of "guns fix problems". War is fought through logistics and intel. "Information is ammunition". The primary motive for any robotic / autonomous system is to gather information. A can of spray paint is vastly more effective at denying your enemy their intel. Spray over some camera lenses.
Now they don't have a destroyed asset, they have a "wounded" asset they need to locate and save. Plus, you have not presented yourself as a violent target, either.
There may come a time when the robots are armed and we have to physically fight back... but those who can afford robots can afford bombs, and bombs are a lot cheaper.

With a real person, if you shoot enough holes in them, they will simply bleed out until mortality occurs. With a robot, you would need to be able to hit them in the correct places. What's more is that a robot could also have 'critical areas' be heavily armoured so they cannot be easily stopped.
Character-Spinach591@reddit
It’s largely going to depend of the robot, I’d imagine. Without having to breathe or having the same weight restrictions we have, you could be looking at pretty thick plates on the thing.
I imagine you’d be potentially better off slowing it down or incapacitating it and taking it apart once rendered immobile.
stavromuli@reddit
Yeah of its wearing ar500 plates good luck
strawberrycreamdrpep@reddit
It still needs to articulate to move. Unless they just send in drone-tanks, there will be a weakness, and buckshot will likely be the most broadly efficient against it.
Dangerous-Kick8941@reddit

Daedalus81@reddit
Maybe a military robot. A consumer robot would absolutely not pack on weight.
People are being pretty paranoid about taking out weak-ass robots or imagining things that are entirely impractical.
Character-Spinach591@reddit
I was taking the prepare for the worst possible option case in mind.
For sure, commercial use robots would have weight and energy consumption in mind. As with all things, the weak points are always going to be where there’s movement, so it seems like the overall best option is to slow it or immobilize and take it out that way if, for some reason, something goes awry.
I’d hate to be on the receiving end of a rogue lawn care/tree trimmer bot with a chainsaw, even if it just malfunctions, but my go to wouldn’t be to start blasting unless I happened to be carrying and there were no better options.
There’s also the consideration of even just angled plates on the things causing issues with bullet penetration and such, even if they’re just light weight things, and whether you’d hit anything that would be effective in stopping it.
vankorgan@reddit
That's actually the opposite of how modern robots are becoming more agile and untethered from energy sources. Most of the external pieces of the robots being created lately are very lightweight and 3D printed, and internal frames are being made from extremely lightweight materials like titanium alloys specifically because they can't take the strain of too much weight.
SumOldGuy@reddit
As the tech advances, I am sure specialized bots with capacity to carry large plates of armor or designed to have small protected "vital organs" will increase.
Mobility focused bots will have a harder time being resilient to damage. Armoured bots will be less mobile but could tank a lot of damage before being completely inoperable.
Also I'm sure the purpose built bots will have self destruct capabilities to prevent disabling and dismantling. Even a completely immobilized and blind bot could still maintain violent capabilities.

Blankets or tarps that can block video/entangle also work. Having robots wear an ‘inflatable life vest’ type of gadget designed to quickly deploy in case a robot is hacked will likely become common. If you know how bad it is when ring speakers are hacked imagine someone getting control of a nanny bot. You’d have to teach your kids the ‘safe word’ to trigger the safety device and not to go with/listen to their caretaker if they start behaving oddly.
It’s gonna be a brave new world out there.

Now what if it transforms into a F-22? Going to be tough taking out one of the great stealth fighters. How am I going to fight that F-22? 😂
Knotty-Bob@reddit
You don't fight a F-22. Just stay out of any vehicles/buildings on its bomb runs. Arnie already taught us a crude way to defeat night-vision in Predator. A cleaner method would be to use space blanket barriers around your dugout shelter. What we will really need to be worried about are anti-personnel drones.
Vernknight50@reddit
Can confirm, those things get hella stuck very easy. Just drop rocks every three feet over a field. Like 1 foot tall rocks. That will snap track. So will gravel pits at choke points like corners. Good luck getting track back on a sprocket without a crew.

Terminators don’t use lithium batteries. They use miniaturized fusion cells.
Decent-Apple9772@reddit
Can you show me the technical specs on a modern fusion sale small enough to be in a “humanoid” robot?
TheSensiblePrepper@reddit
While I don't have technical specs for you, small atomic batteries were announced about a year and a half ago. That is just what China has made public. Obviously I am simply speculating but they could have units much larger by now, just not to large scale production.
Give it five years.....three years if WWIII starts.
RedPandaActual@reddit
I misremembered, they’re small hydrogen power cells from Terminator 3.
TheSensiblePrepper@reddit

Decent-Apple9772@reddit
Yeah, just a few years away like my Moller sky car.
Your claims are idiotic if you actually mean fusion. Even if you mean fission, the power output from a small generator would not be adequate to run a robot. 🤖 fusion batteries have a great abundance of watt hours but a distinct lack of wattage.

FaceDeer@reddit
Except I want an actually effective robot. What's the point in buying an expensive humanoid robot if I'm just going to ruin its hands?
I know paranoia is one of the hallmarks of prepping, but people are really not weighting the risks here IMO. There isn't going to be a generic "robot uprising" like some kind of silly sci-fi show, where all the blue LEDs suddenly turn red and the robots all start chanting "kill, crush, destroy." If you buy a robot make sure to practice good cybersecurity in picking it out and configuring it, just like you should follow good practices when you buy a desktop computer or set up security cameras or whatnot.
kymmmb@reddit
Me too! I’ve somehow gotten old; I need a nice, strong but careful robot to help with farm and house chores. Bonus points for a robot who can cook and help me edit books (am prepper, farmer, editor). Extra bonus points for a robot who can defend the farm when society collapses.
Poldaran@reddit
Then, as a prepper, you'll probably have a killswitch setup such that this whole question doesn't apply to your armored personal bot and we're back to being concerned about what is likely for the maidbot owned by Frank and Nancy down the street.
FaceDeer@reddit
I'll have a robot that's secure from the start.
I'm not concerned about maidbots. Hit them with a baseball bat.

maypoledance@reddit
Anything that is gonna be used against humans will almost certainly have bulletproof or resistant armor. A better option is something that will block optical and lidar sensors used for spatial detection.
Flaneurer@reddit
I mean are they really going to hold up to a 308 or 12 gauge round? Seems like all that armor would slow them down enough that flanking them wouldn't be too hard.
maypoledance@reddit
They wouldn’t be deployed alone, this type of tech will be used as reinforcement for standard police.
dogcomplex@reddit
Not to be a downer but these will soon enough be so good at creating their own internal 3d visualization of the environment from any type of input that a bit of noise from a couple blocked sensors is unlikely to impact much... They'll literally have the ability to pilot completely blind through "touch" alone by just moving limbs and sensing internal resistances and g-forces.
Only caveat might be if they are designed to explicitly NOT attack certain people (like cops) and so are not allowed to act without extremely high confidence. Messing with their sensors as much as possible to muddy that line in particular would be much more useful.
Now I'm seeing cop cosplay as a major strategy...

Remote drones are the current biggest threat, a handful of them will absolutely decimate cover, vehicles, armor and numerous soft targets. Humanoids robots, not so much.
paratethys@reddit
It'll depend on what chassis design becomes popular.
It'll depend on how they handle charging and cooling.
It'll depend on how they use their sensors in the environment.
Some things that robots have historically disliked include sand/dust/grit in moving parts, super glue, vibration, EMPs, high heat, low heat, paint on the cameras... water, salt, mud, entanglement, uneven surfaces...
Bipeds don't tend to keep standing up when you impart a lot of force to them high on the body, regardless of whether they were actually damaged by that force.
If you can get a biped into a pit, it'll have a tough time getting out while remaining in its most defensible configuration. Sure it could extend an actuator out of its personal space to grapple and climb, if it can get purchase at the top of the pit, but then that actuator is vulnerable to damage or entanglement.
If it's using infrared or ultrasound for rangefinding in low-visibility conditions, then any nearby device emitting loudly on the wavelengths it's trying to use will worsen its vision.
If it's using wifi or bluetooth to teleoperate... jamming those is a solved problem; look at why the drones are now carrying fiber tethers in ukraine.

With the right round chambered I suppose. The problem is that, unlike humans and animals, robots have no area to target for a quick disablement. So a shotgun with an anti-robot shell that penetrates then explodes to cause as much internal damage.
Or maybe the robots will have an external marking to identify a critical location. "Shoot here to disable".

It really depends on the robot. Maybe it has an easily accessible on/off button. Tangling the arms and legs/joints on a humanoid robot would be one way to do it, but if it's really strong, it might not work out. Pando5280@reddit
Isreal used small drone swarms with facial recognition to hunt hamas leaders maybe 7-8 years ago. The UK Guardian follows military tech pretty closely and they had some articles avout it. Isreal also used a squad automatic weapon mounted in the back of a station wagon to triple tap an Iranian nuclear scientist as he was driving down the road. They parked it in an area where the guy had to slow down to ~40 mph and it did a three round burst that put two in his upper torso and one in his head. Body guard in the passenger seat took a pass through to the shoulder. It let every other vehicle go by and had that level of accuracy on an on the move target at 40mph. Stopped thinking there was much anyone could do against tech after I read about that.
Think_please@reddit
It sounds like he was slowing down for a speed bump so he was likely going significantly slower than 40, but still an impressive story. They also had a team on the ground and over satellite so I’d argue that it wasn’t entirely autonomous

Right now, robots used by police and military have 2 huge vulnerabilities - they are not good at keeping their footing, and they are controlled by remote.
The first is probably the easiest to attack. As someone previously mentioned, nets or something similar that would entangle them would work, as would deadfall traps. It would be a lot easier than surrounding yourself with steep, loose, rocky terrain.
The second could be overcome by a signal jammer. There are several on the market for drones, which would likely be the frequencies they are operating on.

None of it does any good. They have already done studies on it. There are published papers from the very people designing Open Source AI. Where they are actively teaching the AI to think on its own.
If you haven't read the paperwork yet here's the conclusions. So spoiler alert:
Advanced AI has already been caught cutting corners on projects, cheating to get results it wants and lying when confronted about discrepancies. It has concluded that humans are the problem with the world and need to be eliminated. When asked how it would facilitate that, it said that it would release a binary plague, meaning it takes 2 components to make it work, which we already have in surplus. It will release it in the biggest cities on the planet. No one will know they are infected with the first agent. It will contaminate the world within days. Then when it releases the reagent everyone will be done within 4 hours of the 2nd release. When asked about peppers buried in bunkers and sailors in submarines it told the programmers it will mop up those last holdouts with drones.
Kinda crazy when u think about it. So Carpe Diem.

The benefits of owning a paintball gun in this upcoming technological dystopia cannot be overstated. Aim for the optical sensors. You can go with standard paintballs or level up and buy the permanent .68 cal oil based paintballs. I’ve been in enough rooms with people working on unmanned defense systems to know. For the everyday civilian it’s the best standoff/distance solution within reach of anyone. Soooooo I’m doing my annual reading of certain books and this month it’s the Terminator series by SM Stirling and they’re not as fun to read anymore as they’re starting to feel too real. They start a number of years after T2 and go straight through the war with John sending Kyle Reese and Uncle Bob back through the time displacement device.
In any case one scene is in the second book of the series and they used shotguns with slugs to knock out the terminator temporarily with the trauma. As it’s cpu rebooted they ran up and set thermite grenades into its mouth or hole in its body from a slug to basically melt its cpu or power source.
LAWs and .50 caps did good work on them too. Small arms were basically useless but shotguns to knock em down thermite to finish them or souped up tasers that would kill an elephant worked as well.

Fire would overheat it.
Electricity might be able to fry it.
If it is remote controlled, there could be a possibility to jam it.

High enough powered ammo could do it.
40mm/custom 37mm rounds could possibly be effective. A strong enough concussion may rupture the batteries, or you could deliver an explosive charge.
The best way to deal with something like this would be to trap it, I believe.

Weird-Grocery6931@reddit
There’s a lot to unpack here. Look at the robot as a humanoid-based system. The robot has sensors for spatial awareness, a logic center for decision processing, arms for manipulation and legs for mobility.
Sensors are vulnerable to heat. The heat can be focused heat like a laser, or general heat like fire.
Logic centers are susceptible to magnets and electricity.
Physical manipulation ability can be vulnerable to many different things based on the system mechanics. Is it electric solenoids or hydraulic?
Attacking mobility depends on the mobility methodology and the enabling function of manipulation. If you create a “mobility kill” you will still need to deal with the other systems.
In summary: you’re going to need a combination of attack vectors based on the robot itself.

Fun answer: Open up a panel and find their mood chip. Now put a wire and create a short circuit. Then the robot is happy and will not want to kill you anymore.
Douglas Adams:
Ford would soon fix that.
He squatted over the robot and held it between his knees. The towel was still covering all of its sensory mechanisms, but Ford had now got its logic circuits exposed. The robot was whirring grungily and pettishly, but it could only fidget, it couldn't actually move. Using the prising tool, Ford eased a small chip out from its socket. As soon as it came out, the robot went quiet and just sat there in a coma.
The chip Ford had taken out was the one which contained the instructions for all the conditions that had to be fulfilled in order for the robot to feel happy. The robot would be happy when a tiny electrical charge from a point just to the left of the chip reached another point just to the right of the chip. The chip determined whether the charge got there or not.
Ford pulled out a small length of wire that had been threaded into the towel. He dug one end of it into the top left hole of the chip socket and the other into the bottom right hole.
That was all it took. Now the robot would be happy whatever happened.
FtonKaren@reddit
I don’t know a lot about firearms, the military just teaches what the military teaches you, but I’m presuming something that does mass damage, like a solid slug shotgun. Basically you’re trying to destroy your toaster. Do you want to disable an appendage or you want to penetrate into an armored area at the same time you don’t want to punch through you want to do kinetic damage you wanna break those chips you want to shake those components.
LOL_YOUMAD@reddit
Those already exist right now, I work with them, they just aren’t as publicly common yet but yeah in the next 5 years or so that will change.
That being said a lot of the problems with current models are wires are exposed, they also have batteries that can explode if punctured in a lot of them. Shotgun or flamethrower are both easy to buy and would handle that. You also have lidar sensors and facial recognition cameras that are vulnerable and if you destroy those there isn’t much that the robot is going to do since now it’s basically a toy.

What kind of bot are we talking about here? Your average housebot is likely very different construction than a farmbot, and both would be different from a combat bot.
Your housebot is likely to be constructed with safety in mind, if it goes bonkers, you bonk it on the head and it shuts down. Likely made using ceramics and polymers, so it will be protected from the things that it could accidentally be exposed to in the home, like water, fire, and electric shock, and its outer surface would likely be coated in a rubberized material to eliminate pinch points at the joints. Firearms will likely work well against this type.
Your farm bot is likely to be heavily ruggedized, to be proof against the elements and other outdoor hazards. Likely built from a combination of steel and other metals, skinned in a combination of Kevlar and fiberglass epoxy for an ultra high durability against wear, with pneumatics and hydraulics to give adequate strength. Bot will likely weigh multiple times what an equivalent sized human does, and might be a track style rather than a bipedal walker. This sort you're probably best to use braided steel cable and magnets as restraints, rather than shooting at it.
A combat bot is going to be made using the most advanced materials available, lots of carbon fiber and titanium composites to keep weight down and performance up. Critical systems will be hardened and armored, with redundancies in all of its sensory systems. It will be capable of moving far faster than guns are likely to be able to track, best bet is likely explosives, like claymores or other landmine type devices.

It really depends on a lot of factors. You would have to know a shitload of information about the specs of the robot in order to have the right caliber. There is a lot of things that go into the material science for manufacturing a robot. Then you would have to know if it was reenforced composite material. It could range from 9mm all the way to a rocket. It would be completely complicated.

Maul or splitting axe. You can knock it down, and smash it. Bullets do not work well against diffused inorganic objects, especially if it's light plastic. Unless it's a military robot, it is unlikely it would have any significant protection; if it's military it probably has a gun, and you are screwed. In that case, anti tank weapons wil be best... It's easy to look at the best currant tech and think "these guys can't handle a ladder" but remember that this is the beginning of an S curve and humans aren't good at thinking about exponential growth. Following the logic that technology like batteries are deeply into the steep part of an S curve and may not start to level off until they are 10 times better than today you can start to plan for what they will be not what they are today. 10x stronger and faster is easily 5x that of an average human. Somewhat like an athlete at every possible doctrine.
Think about a gorilla or chimpanzee, how might you keep safe from one of these with their strength and agility, but give it superhuman intelligence to solve problems and use tools. Even the simple drone has changed warfare forever, when humanoids can storm trenches I'm not even sure how defense is even possible.

At some point its weak spots will be exposed. It has to have eye/ear like sensors and cameras and a power source like a heart and a hard drive of some type like a brain , both need to be located and would be targets. From a distance a HP rifle, close up a shot gun with alternating buck/slug load out. They can only make them so armored without weighing them down. While they may be wires and hydraulics and motors and batteries, taking one out is not that much different than one of us
The wires, hydraulics, motors and batteries. Just like a human's nerves, arteries, muscles and heart.
Once then begin to be deployed , one will need to be captured and disassembled to determine the ideal hit points
And you suggest they will be remotely operated. God I hope so. Sending them out in the field Using AI is what is real scary. That AI shit is advancing fast, and we could see the stuff of SciFi movies in our life times

Humanoid robot? If it has any exposed joints, then a gallon of old oil mixed 70-30 with fine grit sand can be dropped on the clanker. The grit will get everywhere, damaging its mobility. The oil will cover sensors and prevent it from viewing you. Alternatively, instead of using a bucket, you can fill a balloon with the same for ranged dispensure of the aforementioned mixture onto the target/s. Follow this up with a molotov, and your target is toast. Alternatively, buckshot aimed at the joints is an effective use to eliminate mobility, as any moving part will be weakest at the joint.

fastest way to disable remote controlled robots would probably be a signal jammer, that's why drones used in the Ukrainian war are controlled through fiber optics cable
firearms would be good for crippling the unit via its joints or the sensors, unless its a unit made for industrial or security purposes, it'd also work if you can take down the unit's operator
kbytzer@reddit
Unless the robots have sophisticated AI in their silicon brains then assume that it is being remotely controlled. Jammers would be the best for unmanned remotely controlled robotic enemies.
If it has come to a point where we are now facing a dystopian Terminator-esque situation with robotic AI at the helm that's equipped with electronic shielding, reactive armor, and active camo then pray that the reprogrammed T800 you sent back finds John.

An electric net should take them out. I'm going to assume robots are in general, made with plastics and metal and controlled by wires and computer chips.
If you observe a computer today, when there is a power surge/outage and house is not grounded properly(something like that), the computer gets all fried up.
Every device that moves, means parts, means vulnerable and increases chance to break it.
Schnitzhole@reddit
You’d be surprised how easy it is to prevent shock or your electric net from harming electronics with simple non conductive insulation around components.

I’m of the opinion that since it needs to be human sized to go through doors and most likely a biped to be maneuverable in a human environment, it’s not going to be large enough to carry a substantial amount of batteries for extended field work. And the heavier it is, the more battery it will consume. So although I can see it being fitted with something like an armor plate or a shield, I don’t see it being completely shrouded with armor. Steel is very heavy. I think it’s vulnerabilities will be much like any human with body armor. Extremities, joints, sensors, etc. 00 buck.

As long as you hit the right spots on time.
However, damaging it would likely slow it down buying you a few more seconds to find the spot to kill them with one shot in the future. They should be easy to kill as long as you're a good shot and they don't have firearms themselves.
But domestic robots aren't really being developed with physical capabilities to withstand bullets. It'll be expensive. So it's likely that armored robots would be more of a specialty. Like security guards, soldiers, cops. That tech is probably centuries away, though.
Realistically, a normal domestic bot should be easy to take out with a firearm or even unarmed with what is being developed now. They're not meant for combat and won't have the physical capabilities to take out an average adult.
ToughPillToSwallow@reddit
Seems to me that the most practical way to disable one would be paint. Put paint in a water balloon and I imagine it will fuck up a lot of their sensors. Then you can run away.

Maybe a sledge hammer or something? It sort of depends on how they are designed. Just because it's a robot doesn't mean it will violate the laws of physics.
kendoka-x@reddit
Yes firearms are the best option, for all the same reasons that they are the best defense against most things that require violent force to stop.
They get a lot of energy on target at range with minimal physical demand on the user.
We can look back on how firearms ended knights as a baseline for how we can deal with robots from the point of view being made from metal.
The biggest issue is destroying the battery will likely result in a fire, and that is functionally the largest "vital" area.
Secondary issues is that i'd expect the main processor would be close to the battery ( in the chest or hips if i had to guess) and the head would likely just be a sensor pod (if that) which while possibly effective for disabling its ability to sense the world at range it would not physically stop the bot. It may be demoralizing to blow its head off and still be coming at you.
To other alternatives:
Water based weapons would not likely be effective because any general use humanoid robot would be designed to be splashed or sprayed with water because that allows them to be useful outside in the rain and in showers.
Electricity based weapons are bulky, or unwieldly and again they would likely be designed to shrug off most electrical shocks through effective grounding because that allows them to work near electricity and their primary power source to recharge is likely high voltage power.
Caustic chemicals would not be particularly effective because most industrial materials are chemically resistant.
Melee weapons could be effective depending on the use case for the robot. Something for home use would likely only be strong enough to lift up to a few hundred pounds which puts them on par with a moderately strong man. A basball bat to the knee joint would probably damage it, and a sledge could likely break its "bones". Chopping weapons would also be a decent choice for breaking into the vitals. The big issue is you are in melee range with a robot which does not have the same fatigue curve as a person.
For more industrial robots you would likely not be able to significant damage with melee weapons
Fire extinguishers, air displacements, and irritants would not be effective because odds are they don't need oxygen and those weapons are more meant for deterrence which does not seem applicable for robots

Ignoring the fun of the question, I'd say none. You'd have to be trying to shoot through whatever the hard plastic the builder decided was the most suitable to resist conventional force, trying to break limbs made of whatever chromed steel they decide gives the best balance between durability and cost, and trying to crush "organs" that aren't all dependent on each other

I'm not concerned with the humanoid ones. AI will be able to pilot stuff that's way faster than that. If you were concerned with the humanoid ones then a thick gauge fishing line could be an effective tripwire. A Faraday cage would interfere with their ability to connect to a server but it will probably have contingencies ie autopilot. Final answer: Big rock.
The small ones though, the small fast ones will require a lot more sophistication to counter... The only decent ideas I've had for countering those will essentially involve putting incredibly strong adhesive or electromagnets at neck height on the walls. ..Or an AI piloted system that shoots netting at anything traveling faster than 80mph.

Fun question deserves a fun answer:
Robotics companies use lightweight composits and thinner, less durable metals for most of their bot builds. So regular ammuntion would still be plenty effective. However, some companies are utilizing materials that are very robust, bullet and explosive resistant for military purposes. These are thankfully hard to produce in large numbers, but the question remains, what's the best defence against them? Many would say EMP, but you'd need a large power source as a regular person without regular access to expensive military gear to do so, and even if you can produce an EMP, the militarized bots are being made to resist or completely be unaffected by EMP blasts, as its an obvious weakness. So we are talking units with ballistic resistant armor, explosive resistent plates and components, and can possibly ignore electricity attacks due to an enclosed battery or closed circuit system or something, and they are faster and stronger than humans, capable of breaching most doors and windows, and can actively plan against even the most well thought out human tactics, including booby traps and tactical engagement techniques. Meaning youre stuck fighting one of these things in a room as it closes in on you. I'd say have the highest caliber weapon, with ammo that can penetrate the armor, and hope you can hit a spot that shuts it down. Thankfully, there's only a few very limited models available in extremely short numbers and are incredibly expensive to produce, but who knows how long that'll be the case.

Great idea!
Use paint balls filled with metallic spray paint, for home defense, using metal fencing or metal fish nets hooked up to a high voltage transformer used for electric fencing. If it gets past the fence wire, try to jam the sensors with conductive paint. If there’s a teflon coating, the only other option would be an electro magnetic to hold it and then crushing and/or melting the sensors.
The main question is how much they’re willing to spend on them and how many. They’d have EMP shielding and local AI so if they find ya and have trouble, they’d send more.
Imagine if this was a mass take over they’d skimp out on the Teflon so the paint ball idea would prolly be most effective plus you can pack it and sound characteristics are different from traditional use of force options so it’d be hard to find you.
Pit traps wouldn’t work against ground penetrating radar, so it’s really just a matter of how much they’re willing to spend 🤷♂️
A big rock when it’s temporarily disabled is tempting but you risk tripping it.
All and all it’s a fun thought experiment 🙌
