Help - Is there anyway someone could help me identify this aircraft by this sole image? - KLM, March 2008
Posted by bruhtp04@reddit | aviation | View on Reddit | 202 comments
I've been trying for years to retrieve some pics from my one of my first times ever flying, back in 2008 when I frequently flew with KLM between Milan and Quito, as I believe I might have gotten to fly on the MD11 or the 747.
My mum found this picture today of me in her arms and I feel like I'm sooo close to getting it, but I can't understand which aircarft it is. I believe this is between AMS and Quito, as the window looks too large for whatever aircraft would take me between Milan and AMS, but I just might be gaslighting myself.
To anybody willing to help, THANK YOU!

Getting to fly a md11 is CRAAZYY (i love tri jets)
LordChaos73@reddit
That's the exact same plane who brought me to San Francisco in 2002!
bruhtp04@reddit (OP)
How cool that you've flown on it when I probably wasn't even in my parents' minds 😂
LordChaos73@reddit
I flew it twice, when KLM held their MD-11 farewell flights in november 2014. It was a series of short low-level flights over the Netherlands. What are the odds?
Educational-Coat-750@reddit
Give it an hour. Someone in this sub will respond with the registration number of the aircraft

I flew from Heathrow to Mumbai in February 2007 on Virgin Atlantic, that’s all I can remember. Can you do your magic?
tx_mn@reddit
Haha would need the exact date and time. OP had a timestamp which changed everything.
Could probably get it down to a fleet of airplanes but the exact time is needed to give you a tail
pbodyphoto@reddit
If I have some flight numbers and dates could you find plane type or even better tail numbers?
____max@reddit
Even a rough guess of the aircraft type would be amazing
tx_mn@reddit
LHR <> BOM should have been VS354 still
747-400 or A340-600. More likely the A346 since I think the LGW and leisure had more of the 744. They started and stopped that route a couple of times over the years but I believe it is back on a 350 (but heads up, I have very, very little Virgin knowledge and someone could easily correct me)

Every passenger that had fish will become violently ill in the next half hour. It starts with a slight fever, dryness in the throat. The victim becomes dizzy, experiences itching and a rash. Then it causes severe muscle spasms. Followed by the inevitable drooling. At this point, the entire digestive system collapses with uncontrollable flatulence until finally the poor bastard is reduced to a quivering wasted piece of jelly.

CWinter85@reddit
Hell, if you could find the passenger manifest you could find the seat they were in.
flytejon@reddit
You'd think but sadly passenger manifests are often wildly inaccurate (or at least used to be up to about 6 years ago) and if its a big airport they may not even be saved digitally once the flight departs. The boarding list is of limited further use anyway - as they don't check them off the other end for 99.99999% of flights.
I used to be an aviation crisis responder and you'd think an accurate list of passengers and crew would be very simple once boarding cards were all computerised etc.
But we were often waiting for at least a day if not several for a full manifest and then had to very very carefully data check it for duplicates, mis-spellings and just people missing from the list. We rarely were lucky enough to get the one from at the boarding gate which might have had scribbled pencil additions at the gate for the passenger whose boarding card wouldn't scan, the passenger with a line through as they were bumped to another flight or added by hand onto this one with hand written last min replacement boarding card, and a myriad of other situations we've probably all experienced and never given any thought to. But once the flight departed (the gate not the runway which could be 20min + later) that tatty bit of paper used to just be filed in the nearest confidential waste shredding bag. If the incident happened at departure or very early there was a chance they'd be able to retrieve it. But often it's landing phase that's the most dangerous so it would be long gone when the cleaner collected the shredding waste sack.
The most accurate source was always relatives turning up at the departure or arrival airport and talking to the airline (or usually our staff on their behalf given they'd also just lost friends and colleagues). Part of our team were specialists in bereavement and witness statements (lots of ex cops, Paramedics, counsellors etc) to collect and refine the antemortem details that could help us ID their loved ones physical remains and personal effects and get them home. Mentally a really tough job but with a huge sense of accomplishment and purpose being able to use my skills to help people - I had to give up once I had my own kids as it struck too close to home.

100% an MD 11 flew on it in 2012 on KLM , I could potentially find out the registration for you as a friend worked for KLM for 17 years as a pilot and there might be records. Do you have the exact date ?
bruhtp04@reddit (OP)
Yes I do! And even the time the picture was taken 😂 If you could, you have my eternal gratitude. However, I can't help but notice this was just a bit more than 17 years ago, as the exact date is March 14th, 2008. Time 23:22:44 haha

He kept all his flight logs so if he worked on that flight he will be able to find it. Give me a few days as he and I live on opposite sides of the planet these days. I will report back when I have an answer for you even if someones finds it out for you before.

UPDATE : Confirmed by my friend this was 100% an MD11 but we already knew that , He is looking into records if he can find the rego and name of the aircraft (all KLM birds have names) will hopefully get back soon with that info.

One of my favorite fam trips (retired ATC.) When the pilots were given a descent into SEA (which of course would take us into the ever-present dense cloud layer), the first thing they did was visually acquire Mt. Rainier -- that was sticking up in all its glory through the clouds!

Why does this photo from 2008 give me vibes from 1988? Jesus I’m old
Drenlin@reddit
It's the flash lol, modern cameras have fantastic dynamic range and don't require it as often.
phedders@reddit
I was looking through older photos this morning and musing on that. What is more amazing is that the comms device in my pocket takes incredible photos (within cert optical limits) that my "proper" cameras could not have taken without flash just 10 or 15 years ago.
Drenlin@reddit
It really is incredible. A lot of it comes down to CMOS sensors getting really, really good, driven by the same process improvements that made other microchips improve so much.
bobre737@reddit
I think it has more to do with the advancements of computational photography.
Drenlin@reddit
Those are made possible by increased processing power on the device, but the thing that allows that to be done at all is the fact that we have tiny, incredibly high resolution sensors that can capture at a high frame rate.
Meow-zelTov@reddit
Was thinking the same thing. Then I got up out of my seat, groaned and grabbed my lower back, grabbed another cup of coffee, and mumbled my concerns about the upstairs apartment and the volume of their TV.
bruhtp04@reddit (OP)
Either that or my dad had a really bad camera 😂
CWinter85@reddit
In 08 most people were still using "point and shoot" digital cameras. This would have required the use of a flash and it washed the whole thing out.

Regarding registration,I can help you eliminate two aircraft so that you are left with only 8.
I can confirm that PH-KCA and PH-KCB are not the aircraft you traveled on because their delays on March 14th 2008 can be found on a flyertalk forum operating on other sectors that day so you are left with PH-KC(C,D,E,F,G,H,I,K).
Other than that I have contacted the airports for more information.

imapilotaz@reddit
Hi. Based on a different comment, i pulled up in Diio:
March 15, 2008 AMS-BON KL 753 on MD11. Departed 2325, arrived BON 0415 March 16 BON-GYE KL 753 on MD11. Departed 0520 arrived 0710 GYE-UIO KL 753 on MD11. Departed 0810. Arrived 0900.
Interestingly this was a roundrobin. Plane went AMS-BON-GYE-UIO-BON-AMS and that GYE-UIO leg is listed in Diio as both KL 753 and 754 so it appears they sold 2 flight numbers on same flight leg.

Probably an MD11. A 747 for such a route does not make much economic sense for a route between AMS and Quito and also that window looks quite big for a 747.
Also the MD11 window looks very similar to that photo you are looking at.
