Is hiring improving at the airlines?

My mom’s friend who is a flight attendant at a legacy told her that the airlines are “getting desperate” for pilots due to Captains aging out. Supposedly they’re really ramping up their cadet program, increasing pay, and offering better schedules to try to attract new pilots.
How true is this? what is airline hiring like right now?

Is your mom’s friend stuck in 2022

Your mom's friend is operating on years old information. The current hiring environment at airlines is currently on the low side of normal.
The land of milk and honey that was the post-COVID hiring boom to make up for all the pilots that took early retirements during the coof era ended 18-24 months ago.
The flight schools will always wave their hands about the "coming retirement wave" but they're talking self-interest motivated shit because nobody can actually predict the future when it comes to the airline industry. There are too many external and volatile factors at play.

We’re still going to have a bunch of pilots aging out here pretty soon, hiring slows down but they’ll never stop aging

Peak retirements are already over at some airlines, they’ll be over at all of them in the next couple years and you’re not going to get on with a major ina couple years unless your already at a regal

We also currently have a huge surplus of low time pilots looking for their first job as well as 1500+ hour CFIs looking for their first airline job. Point being: retirement numbers don't make the career a sure thing.

One of the golden rules in aviation- never trust a rumor, especially one from FAs.

They are hiring, but there is absolutely no rush or lack of captains.
They're also not changing pay or schedules.
