CFI Job market

I'm a DFW-based recent CFI-I and have been looking for flight instruction jobs online, but haven't had any luck. Is the job market just really slow this time of year, or am I not looking in the right places?

Every job market is pretty cooked right now

Have you tried being an independent CFI?

Keep on trying, I got lucky and hit a flight school right as one of their instructors was gearing up to leave and was able to land the job. I know a few others who have been able to get jobs in the past month as brand new flight instructors. The jobs are few and far between but they’re out there. Just gotta keep hunting them down. Good luck!

It’s not this time of year. It’s this time of an industry cycle. There’s been more than 2x production of new entry-level pilots the last couple years. And nowhere for them to go because hiring is backed up so far incumbents aren’t even leaving these entry-level jobs.

The CFI job market currently is somewhere between ugly and horrible. There is a massive oversupply of instructors looking for their first job both because there was a huge influx of new pilots in the last 2 years and because airline hiring has significantly cooled off leading to fewer instructors moving to airlines, leading to fewer job openings.
The good news is that the commercial aviation industry is wildly volatile so it's bound to change. The bad news is nobody can predict when that'll be. Anyone claiming to know is trying to sell you something.

Has the slowdown ever reached the CFI market in the past or is this new territory? I have definitely heard of airline hiring slowing but I don’t think I’ve ever seen the CFI demand slow. Granted I haven’t been paying attention terribly long, much less in a social media world

Agreed, like 6 months ago, people said we wouldn’t see anyone hiring until 2027 at the earliest and there starting to hire right now. The market can’t be predicted

Thanks for the insight — that makes sense. Sounds like it’s a tough market right now, but I’ll keep at it and stay ready for when things open up again.

Have you not been paying attention to this sub for the past six months or so?
The airlines basically stopped hiring. The production of pilots kept going. There’s now probably five or 10 qualified pilots for every position available.

Was it you who had the real estate market 08 analogy? I threw that around a few times today, I hope I don’t owe you royalties
JustAnotherDude1990@reddit
That was me.
It really is like trying to get int real estate in 2007-2008.

So if we just wait another 14 years the market will skyrocket again? I’m in
SierraHotel84@reddit
Yes, it is. No, there's no right place to look right now.

This sub gets a post like this every other day. The CFI job market has been dead for over a year or two now. I’ve been looking since December last year.
And no it’s not just the DFW area. It’s dead everywhere. I’ve applied everywhere in the country. Only 4 out of hundreds replied to my application to let me know they’re not hiring at the moment. The rest is just radio silence.
