Saw this little dude going down the highway yesterday. Thought it was funny, and kinda neat.
There were roughly 2000 comuta-cars ever made, meaning there is a 1/900000 chance one of the cars on the road will be a comuta-car.
GrafZeppelin127@reddit
Those bumpers sure are something, ain’t they?
GrayDawg23@reddit (OP)
So I was also super intrigued by this, and I found out that they are additional batteries, AS WELL as a low impact buffer. They are lead acid batteries, so they won’t explode into a fireball.
I still wouldn’t want to get into an accident with lead acid batteries as my first line of defense. I’d rather keep my face.
GrafZeppelin127@reddit
Yyyyeah. My great-aunt still has scars pitted all over her arms from when she rolled over in a Karmann-Ghia and had the battery acid dripping onto her from above. As it turns out, acid is not fun.
GrayDawg23@reddit (OP)
Ouch! I hope she’s recovered fully and has no pain from it.
GrafZeppelin127@reddit
Oh, she’s fine, this was decades ago. Long before I was born. Karmann-Ghias are rare to see these days…
carrynarcan@reddit
My dad says he bought one new with no washer fluid in it and smuggled tequila back from Mexico in the reservoir. I didn't know you couldn't bring back tequila legally. Maybe he was underage. Maybe I was young and gullible to believe it. It's almost a good story, it just has flaws. Point is, my dad did have a brand new one at one point in time.
maybelying@reddit
All Tequila comes from Mexico, is not illegal to bring over. He was just avoiding paying duties and taxes. Still a baller move.
Diligent_Traffic_106@reddit
How do you get it out? Hose and gravity? Going to leave some behind.
Do you suck on those window washer nipples while your friend pushes the button?
MurphysRazor@reddit
The VW reservoir is a tank than sits on the spare tire and uses the tire air pressure to squirt. They come off easy, so it would be like using a super soaker tank.
Diligent_Traffic_106@reddit
So car nipple sucking is the way to go?
dirtymike401@reddit
Crazy straw.
TorontoRider@reddit
Wasn't the battery behind the seat on the passenger side?
MurphysRazor@reddit
yep. Lots of old German cars had it there.
GrafZeppelin127@reddit
I have no idea. For that matter, I’ve never seen pictures of the crash, so I don’t know the exact positioning of how she ended up under the car and how the car was positioned such that the battery was dripping on her arms from above, but it must have been pretty gnarly from the looks of them.
DMala@reddit
Bonnie Parker (of Bonnie and Clyde fame) spent her last days nearly crippled when she was splashed with battery acid from a car wreck. They were so infamous at that point that she couldn’t go to a hospital or even stay somewhere with a proper bed. She healed curled up in the back seat of a Ford, and because of that could barely stand upright or walk. It’s a pretty harrowing story and takes all the romance right out of it.
DarthMeow504@reddit
That must have been stronger than modern formulations because I was splashed once by liquid from an industrial truck battery while loading them and it was only a mild first degree burn. It hurt a lot, sure, but the damage was no more than a slightly swollen red mark.
L3sh1y@reddit
She and Clyde were in a bad car accident in 1933 (Clyde overlooked warning signs of a bridge under construction and flipped the car into a ravine), so it was not just the acid, but also gasoline fire and 3rd degree burns. The bit if acid in a car lead battery would not be enoug to cause this kind of caustic burns if the skin was not broken. They hid in a remote motel in rural Arkansas to nurse her, but had to move soon again due to a screwed up robbery and subsequent killing of a marshall. She spent her last year crippled and in agony before the group was killed in '34.
Tango91@reddit
Your skin is only good at resisting the burns when it’s unbroken.
My fiancee was the passenger in a golf cart rollover that took the skin off one of her knees on tarmac. The batteries came loose, cracked, and leaked acid all over her legs.
After lots of painful treatment, debriding, vacuum pump dressings and surgery to clean the acid and bits of gravel out, years later she’s got a large and permanent disfiguring scar on that knee.
Johndeauxman@reddit
Holy cow, at 50lbs a piece for LA batteries that’s got to be at least an extra 400lbs, it’s a wonder the suspension can even handle it much less go down the road!
carn1vore@reddit
Wow, I bet putting all that weight outboard of the wheels does wonders for handling responsiveness.
QuellishQuellish@reddit
Russian submarines would stack thier batteries in the bow as a last resort defense, at least Tom Clancy said so.
Geology_rules@reddit
I think the designers knew if you were to get into an accident in this thing, you'd want death to be a guarantee
I love it.
1DownFourUp@reddit
That's for when Triangle Man fights Person Man
Brick_Fish@reddit
Yoooo someone painted the electric cheese wedge blue!
therealduckie@reddit
Why is it "LMAOO"? It's a rad vintage electric car and it's working. I call that awesome.
GrayDawg23@reddit (OP)
Because it looks hilarious? Sure it’s super cool I don’t deny that. It’s just a very silly looking design imo.
theonetrueelhigh@reddit
Considering it's from the 70s, it's not too out of line with the nascent cassette futurism SF motifs that other concurrent EV concepts bore. And unlike most of those, the Citi Car was an actual product that made it to market.
To see the Citi Car form factor taken to a fully evolved, mature state, look up the Kewet Buddy. It really takes this form factor and refines it to something pretty neat.
IRingTwyce@reddit
I didn't know how I've never heard of the Kewet. I looked it up, and it's every bit as cute as the CitiCar is awkward.
I love it!
Pikka_Bird@reddit
Kewet had an older model that looked basically exactly like this (at a glance) called the El Jet.
tekstical@reddit
I saw an old episode of price is right the other day and someone won one of these. It was hilarious, Bob was like and the next prize up for grabs is a NEW CARRRRR!! And the person was ecstatic, then the curtain slides back to reveal this car! I was cracking up at the deadpan look on their face.
ilovebostoncremedonu@reddit
What looks funnier, the CitiCar or the Cyber Truck?
GrayDawg23@reddit (OP)
I’d get a cybertruck, sell it to someone in California, then get a better Subaru for Colorado lol. This must be the guys summer car because there’s no way he’s getting back up the hill with that thing.
One-Guilty-Finger@reddit
Imagine it upgraded with a lithium ion battery.
carrynarcan@reddit
can you imagine the performance gain by weight savings alone? Then if you're doing all that, might as well go brushless. Turn that thing into a weapon. I think I just sold myself on it.
One-Guilty-Finger@reddit
I’d drive it. Very little wasted materials and it takes up a smaller space on the road. Imagine how easy it would be to back it out of the garage.
carrynarcan@reddit
So the little bit of Wikipedia research I did tells me just about any bldc conversion could beat the 6hp stock 8 volt DC setup. I couldn't find anywhere saying that it's rear wheel drive, but it pretty much had to be. You wouldn't need to add too much power to make that thing a wheelie monster. That would be entertaining as hell with a wheelie bar. Not too excited about leaf springs all the way around but all-you-can-eat wheelies on tap would be life changing.
One-Guilty-Finger@reddit
Up close the construction is similar to a homemade go cart. Highly receptive to mods. Where can we get one??
swervin_mervyn@reddit
I think Roli fixed one of these up, on Counting Cars. The other blokes laughed at him, but he was in love with it.
PandaCasserole@reddit
They have one of these for sale on FBmp in Missouri 9k?
willieyobslayer@reddit
Why does that last slide look like jar jar binks?
crazyuncleb@reddit
My sixth grade teacher Mr. Harvey had one of these new. He also had a pet armadillo that slept under his TV.
GrayDawg23@reddit (OP)
The teacher is a kind of dude who will be immortal in the sense there’s always someone thinking of him.
waytosoon@reddit
Idk man, I've seen at least 900,000 cars, and I've never seen one. Not ever
Proud_Wythenshawe@reddit
I think that could? be a Zagato Zele? I seem to remember it from an old pack of Top Trumps?
slightlyused@reddit
In the 80s growing up in Renton, WA (Seattle suburb) there was one of these that'd drive by my house. It was yellow and we'd laugh our asses off as we were into Corvettes, Camaros and Mustangs. Our little 10 year old brains couldn't conceive what a GOOD electric car could be!
Suni_Boi62@reddit
This is the ONLY running one I’ve seen! Incredible
Yeetstation4@reddit
Is that a fucking citicar

Took far too long to see an Aging Wheels reference here.
Heat_Induces_Royalty@reddit
Shit I wouldn't be surprised to find out it was Robert driving it!
GrayDawg23@reddit (OP)
You sure this isn’t the successor? Is there something obvious that sets them apart?
SomeGuyInAVan@reddit
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citicar
It's the Commuta-car model, but Citicar is the brand. The safety bumper is for mid 70's US safety Standards I believe. The cars were made from 1974 to 1977, right around when the pedestrian safety laws changed.
GrayDawg23@reddit (OP)
Thank you :)
SomeGuyInAVan@reddit
No problem, I like learning about unique cars like this, might as well pass on some knowledge when I have it. Plus Aging Wheels, the channel whose video I linked above, is entertaining and he likes stuff along the same vein. He's got some Reliants, a Trabant, a Polski Fiat, etc. I definitely recommend checking out some of his other videos if you like the same!

Should I therefore be made the subject of fun?
Exyhl@reddit
I see parallels in the design.
DrieverFlows@reddit
These are relatively frequent in the Netherlands. Without the battery bumpers tho. Not allowed on highways either. 45kph max
number__ten@reddit
Check if aging wheels is driving it
GrayDawg23@reddit (OP)
Wasn’t him unfortunately.
Gunsight1@reddit
Haha these things are great. When I was a kid, someone in town had one in bright yellow, looked like a wedge of cheese on wheels
PinupCheesecakeSale@reddit
This looks like the same model that Uncle Eddie had in "Grounded for Life." It was a recurring gag on the show.

Used to see Ed Begley Jr driving one of these around LA in the 80s
zoinkability@reddit
I hope he still has & drives it
theonetrueelhigh@reddit
When lived in the DC area, one drove by my school bus stop every morning. That was about 1977.

Fantastic-
This is exactly how I would picture Ed Begley Jr. driving around LA in the 80s.

GrayDawg23@reddit (OP)
You can think they are funny AND celebrate them. I’ve done lots of research on these little guys since discovering them. I can promise you I’ve learned more than laughed at it.
RoseWould@reddit
That thing was considered safe to go on the highway?
GrayDawg23@reddit (OP)
Yes because you notice it from so far away that you have plenty of time to merge lanes and get around it lol.
Top speed is like 50 I’ve heard 🤣
